What's a Christian, anyway? In our 2025 political environment, terms like evangelical begin to lose the meaning they once held, or they require further refinement and definition. Glenn Packiam's new book brings a fresh perspective to this conversation. It turns out the answer lies in the Nicene Creed. This year, the Nicene Creed turns 1,700 years old. This ancient work, built from Scripture and the public life of the ancient church, is often considered part of a “dead” spirituality, especially in traditions which put an emphasis on individual experiences with God. However, Russell and Glenn unpack the depth of personal and congregational meaning within the creed and discuss its power to redefine what Christian means in an environment where the term is constantly changing.  Resources mentioned in this episode or recommended by the guest include: What's a Christian, Anyway? In today's episode, we're pulling wisdom from the past to solve one of the most pressing challenges of today: how to lead a church in a culture that's spiritually curious—but deeply skeptical. You'll discover why the Nicene Creed—yes, that ancient statement of faith—might be the most relevant discipleship tool for this cultural moment. We'll unpack how to use it to build trust, foster spiritual resilience, and guide your church with clarity and confidence in a time of confusion. We welcome Glenn Packiam, lead pastor of Rock Harbor Church in Costa Mesa, CA, to explore the question at the heart of his new book, What is a Christian Anyway? The conversation dives deep into the confusion and corruption that have shaped the perception of Christianity today, the power of the Nicene Creed to anchor believers, and how churches can effectively disciple in an age of skepticism. A new slate of Christian movies and television shows is managing to draw both acclaim from critics and the attention of non-believers. Are the days of cringy Christian media finally behind us? Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss the impact of “The Chosen” and the new Amazon series, “House of David.” What do these shows get right that so many past faith-based projects got wrong? The Oscar-winning documentary, “No Other Land,” cannot find a distributor in the U.S. because critics say it's antisemitic, but Phil managed to watch it anyway. He offers his take on the movie, why it's controversial, and how we can distinguish between sinful antisemitism and legitimate criticism of the Israeli government. Then, Kaitlyn interviews Glenn Packiam about his new book about the Nicene Creed, “What's a Christian Anyway?” Packiam says the creed can be a beautiful lifeline to people caught in the crosswinds of church corruption and cultural confusion. Pastoring has always been a vocation of great responsibility, yet the expectations placed on pastors today have grown increasingly complex. From preaching and shepherding to being organizational leaders, cultural commentators, and trauma-informed counselors, the demands can stack up, making the work feel impossible. Add to this the challenge of navigating a rapidly changing cultural and technological landscape, and it's no wonder so many pastors wrestle with questions of calling, capacity, and resilience. Today's conversation is with Ashlee Eiland, author of the newly released book “Say Good.” As the Vice President for The Colossian Forum, Ashlee is passionate about fostering better discussions amidst division and disagreements. Growing up as one of the few black girls in a predominantly white Catholic school, Ashlee grappled with questions of identity and belonging. Accused of talking “too white” in one setting and feeling out of place in another, she embarked on a journey to find her true identity in Christ. She shares her personal journey of liberation from insecurity and the power of God's promises to redefine our sense of self-worth.  In “Say Good,” she looks at biblical insights and practical wisdom, and offers guidance on navigating difficult conversations with grace and humility. From her own battles with illness to the challenges of 2020, Ashlee's story is a testament to the transformative power of God's deliverance. Through vulnerability and authenticity, she invites listeners to embrace their own stories of liberation and discover the courage to speak truth in love. Bio: Ashlee Eiland is a thought leader, writer, and Bible teacher who exists to join in God's redemptive work here on Earth. Her work has one purpose: to help humanity build bridges back to the truth of who God is and between one another in whole and healing relationships. Ashlee formerly served as Co-Lead Pastor at Mars Hill Bible Church in West Michigan, has partnered with Women Speakers Collective as a coach and cohort leader, and has led alongside Glenn Packiam, Rich Villodas and Sharon Hodde Miller as part of Barna's The Resilient Pastor cohort initiatives. Ashlee is also part of a forthcoming documentary on personal transformation and communal reconciliation from Tremolo Productions, featuring the work of The Colossian Forum. (The documentary's filmmaker, Nicholas Ma, is an award-winning director, producer and writer whose work includes Netflix's Won't You Be My Neighbor documentary.)
