Hello folks, welcome to the latest episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast, which might also be my new favorite episode.  Our guest is Obi Kaufmann, a writer, a poet, an artist, a backpacker, ecological philosopher and student of all things California ecology. Many of you listening are probably familiar with Obi through his incredible Field Atlas series of California, combining his beautiful watercolors of the more than human world of California alongside equally beautiful data-driven words. In addition to the Field Atlases, Obi has written two thinner works - The State of Water and the newly released The State of Fire, which you should definitely check out if you haven't yet.  In this conversation we explore what is natural and what is nature, the influence of E.O. Wilson's book ‘Consilience' on Obi's work in bridging different disciplines and of course, his Field Atlas series and new book The State of Fire.  Many guests I've had on are guests that I have learned something from and I want to share that with you the listener. And we learn a lot from Obi in this episode for sure. What I think is unique about this episode and selfishly why I asked Obi to be a guest is that we explored new ground, in the moment.  My take away from that exploration is a new understanding of how we think about nature. We've discussed before how we are as much a part of nature as white crowned sparrows and Point Reyes National Seashore. However, we still often get hung up on identities like environmentalist and we misuse words like preservation and conservation because we still haven't fully adopted this idea that we are nature. We donate and volunteer to protect these beautiful places and beautiful species for us, but when we truly bring on board an idea of conservation that includes us rather than being for us, we can shift our orientation because as Obi puts it - there is no daylight between the health of your ecosystem and your own health. It's not just physical or aesthetic, it is spiritual, it is mental. And I think once we figure this out, we can truly inhabit our membership in the ecosystems.  Links Check Out Obi's Website Follow Obi on Instagram Buy 'The State of Fire' Buy 'The State of Water' Buy 'The California Field Atlas' Buy 'The Forests of California' Buy 'The Deserts of California' Buy 'The Coasts of California'

Parker explains the reasons behind the shift, noting that many are waking up to the realization of the damage that's been done by progressive policies on the black community, with tons looking at what they face in a Biden economy and recognizing how much better things were under the Trump administration. Then, Giordano delves into the issue of school choice, a topic that would benefit the black community deeply, noting that rappers Jay-Z and Meek Mill have now thrown their support behind the issue, with Parker explaining why the theory makes sense. Amnesty International South Africa executive director Shenilla Mohamed said that 30 years after the end of apartheid, the right to life and dignity continues to be trampled on, with some lives deemed more valuable than others. "No one is spared, from women and girls enduring high rates of gender-based violence (GBV), to courageous human rights defenders risking their lives to expose wrongdoing and corruption," she said. On Wednesday, Amnesty International launched its yearly 'The State of the World's Human Rights' report, which assesses human rights in 155 countries. Mohamed pointed out that three decades had passed since the end of the oppressive apartheid regime in South Africa, marking a historic milestone in the fight for freedom and equality, however, the struggle for human rights and dignity persisted. She said GBV remained rampant, with perpetrators often evading justice. She highlighted that the report paints a sobering picture of the ongoing challenges faced by South Africans and added that despite the hard-fought victories against apartheid, millions still grappled with the denial of their fundamental human rights. "The promise to eradicate pit latrines in schools remains unfulfilled, while literacy rates among Grade 4 pupils remains low. Concerns loom over the potential adverse effects of the National Health Insurance Bill on healthcare accessibility, which is already a problem in the country. Access to safe drinking water is declining and water infrastructure is crumbling with alarming effects," she said. Mohamed noted that amidst these challenges, the murder rate persisted at staggering levels, and excessive use of force by police in response to protests continued. "Human rights defenders, activists and journalists face threats and attempts to silence their voices, underscoring the persistent dangers confronting those who advocate for justice and accountability," she said. Reflecting on South Africa's journey since the end of apartheid, it was a poignant reminder that the fight for freedom, dignity and human rights was far from over, Mohamed said. "This year, as South Africa heads to the polls on 29 May, we have the opportunity to collectively shape the future of the country and vote for human rights; to demand a reality where justice and equality are protected, and the right to live free from violence and have access to safe, sufficient and reliable water is realised for every person, no matter who they are, or where they live," she said. INTERNATIONAL LAW Amnesty International's report presents a stark assessment of the "betrayal of human rights principles" by leaders and institutions. In the face of multiplying conflicts, the actions of many powerful States had further damaged the credibility of multilateralism and undermined the global rules-based order first established in 1945, Mohamed pointed out. She noted the conflict in Gaza which showed no sign of abating, as evidence that war crimes continued to mount. The conflict has since forcibly displaced nearly 1.9-million Palestinians and is restricting the access of desperately needed humanitarian aid despite growing famine in Gaza. The report also points to the US's "brazen use of its veto" to paralyse the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for months on a much-needed resolution for a ceasefire, as it continues to arm Israel with munitions that have been used to commit what Amnesty International says likely amount to war crimes. "It also highlights the grotesque double standards of European countries such as the UK and Germany, given their well-founded opposition to war crimes by Russia and Hamas, while they simultaneously bolster the actions of Israeli and US authorities in this conflict," she added. Mohamed said this showed that many powerful States were abandoning the founding values of humanity and universality enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She highlighted that given the grim global state of play, urgent measures were requi...

Now somemight suggest that due to his blind hatred, he didn't realize that this was infact, a trap and dangerous as this month had negative ramifications for hisancestor piece of, and also for his ancestor Who fought in the war. But I wouldlike to suggest that he believed otherwise. Thereis a well-known Gemara: When Haman cast lots (purim) in order to decide whichmonth to destroy the Jewish people, it landed on the month of Adar, the monthwhere Moshe Rabbeinu left the world, and therefore he grew very happy, takingthis is a sign that it will be a month of bad mazal for the Jewish people.[2] TheGemara elsewhere says that “Just as big fish swallow the smaller fish, so wouldpeople swallow each other, if not for fear of the government”. Amalek did notfear Hashem when they attacked the Jewish people in the desert. They weremissing fear of a higher authority, so they did not care to swallow others.Haman, who descended from Amalek - the nation that does not fear Hashem – wasready to ‘swallow' the Jewish people, for his lot landed on the month of Adar, the mazal of fish, which can get swallowed alive. Thus, we can now betterunderstand why Haman rejoiced when the lot that he cast fell on the month Adar. Thus, the depth of why Haman rejoiced was not simply because it was the month whereMoshe expired (as is well-known, Moshe expired on the 7th of Adar, and thenumber 7 in Hebrew is ז, which is equal in gematria to the word דגfish).Rather, it is because the spiritual power of Moshe is compared to the sun'slight, which does not reach the fish.

Sam McBride argues that the strength of the Irish Army is a crude barometer of how seriously the Republic takes the possibility of unity. Ireland's Defence Forces are small, underequipped and getting weaker as more and more service men and women abandon the ranks due to poor pay and conditions. But what about a united Ireland – if loyalism chose to resist it would Ireland's armed forces be able to deal with that? This is part three of a three-part series. In this podcast episode, Sarah Kimmel, the vice president of research at Simpler Media Group, casts a discerning eye on "The State of the CMO" survey, offering a rare glimpse into the shifting landscape of chief marketing officers (CMOs) and the competencies they must cultivate. The study's revelations place creative thinking at the top of vital skills, trailed by strategic management, leadership prowess and executive aptitude. The CMO's role has been undergoing a remarkable metamorphosis, marked by heightened collaboration with sales divisions, mounting demands for enhanced customer experiences and active participation in digital transformation initiatives. Intriguingly, CMOs say only 59% of leadership expect measurable outcomes from them, indicating not all undertakings lend themselves to direct ties to the bottom line. Kimmel sheds light on the turbulent journey of CMOs as they navigate a perpetually shifting sea of expectations and responsibilities. We caught up with her recently to discuss the survey.

Yesterday I finished 'Paul: A Biography' by N.T. Wright, and I want to tell you all about it. Rest assured, I have more to say than just that it was "so good and super convicting." In all seriousness, though, as far as biographies go, I thought this was a particularly well-written and interesting one. But, yes, I do admit to knowing there is a lot of controversy concerning Tom Wright and his perspective on the Apostle Paul, particularly among the Reformed. But still needing to read and research more to get at what his perspective actually is, I either did not catch anything untoward in his work from 2018, or else there was nothing untoward in said title. And both are entirely plausible, if I may be entirely honest with you. But what is as much or more interesting to me today is the recent article at Christianity Today by Stefani McDade. Published 'September 19th' with the title 'Top 5 Heresies Among American Evangelicals,' the recent findings of the annual joint-venture by Ligonier and Lifeway titled 'The State of Theology' is jarring. For starters, 26% of self-identified American Evangelicals agree with the following statement: "the Bible, like all sacred writings, contains helpful accounts of ancient myths but is not literally true." What follows in the other statistics cited might only be surprising in the sense that you would expect that stat to be significantly higher than one quarter. More than half of evangelicals - 56% - agree with the statement that "God accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam." Similarly disturbing, 73% resonate with the sentiment that "Jesus is the first and greatest being created by God," and over 40% agree that "Jesus was a great teacher, but he was not God," while 60% believe "The Holy Spirit is a force but is not a personal being." All the more glad am I that our local church is going to start working through courses offered for free at BiblicalTraining.org the first week of October. As should now be apparent, the church in America is sorely in need of returning again to what historically would be considered "the basics" of Christianity, but which increasingly in our day are seen as negotiables. These, dear friends, are not to be negotiated down in the interest of inflating stats or gaining rapid acquisition of folks who will think themselves Christians. Everyone indeed is a theologian. The only real question is whether we are good ones, and have the right idea according to God's Word about who God says He is on His own terms. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

A little about Tim: Tim is the author of two books: "The Dirtbag's Guide to Life: Eternal Truth for Hiker Trash, Ski Bums and Vagabonds", and "I Hope I Was Wrong About Eternal Damnation: An Absolutely True Memoir". He's also a psychiatric nurse and a bit of a nomad. He spent five months hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and a month on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, and has lived in Ohio, New Zealand, and the Pacific Northwest. Favorite comedian: I'm not sure. Mindy Kaling is really good, and I love all of the descendants of the old MTV sketch comedy show 'The State'. I also like the Flight of the Concords guys a lot. Favorite song: another hard one, but I'd probably pick "Jolene" by Dolly Parton at the moment, or something old from Bruce Springsteen: "I"m on Fire" maybe? My Karaoke song is a duet with my wife Angel: "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The state of South Carolina isn't really known for much. Myrtle beach is a popular vacation spot, the historic district of Charleston is a must-see, and then, of course, there's Hootie & The Blowfish. But if you ask any true crime buff, the name "Pee Wee" Gaskins is infamous to say the least. To this day, he is still considered by many to be "The Boogeyman of South Carolina."
