Hannah Nation tells the story of Wang Yi and the Chinese house church movement. How has the ramp-up in persecution of the church in China affected pastors and congregations? Hannah, who is editing the ongoing prison writings of the house church pastor Wang Yi, tells the story of these churches. She focuses in particular on the story of Pastor Wang. A classical liberal human rights lawyer, he converted as an adult in 2005 and eventually became the pastor of one of the largest and most public of China's illegal protestant churches. Arrested in 2018, he is now serving a nine-year prison sentence. She discusses his intellectual influences, from Luther and Calvin to Kuyper and Van Til, and traces the development of his thought, from an earlier rights-based approach to his current understanding of the church's role as free by definition, whether or not it has civil freedoms. She also discusses the impact of the Covid lockdowns on the house churches, their scrupulous following of lockdown regulations combined with their absolute refusal to stop meeting for any non-Covid related reason. Finally, she, Susannah and Peter discuss the lessons that such persecution has to offer the Western church.

Part 2! Travis and Hannah continue their conversation on the Chinese Church and how what they are going through affects the church in the West. What lessons can we learn in our postmodern, comfort-addicted, materialistic, suffering-averse culture? What can we learn from our brothers and sisters on the side of the world? What role does suffering have to play in our Christian life? What role does it play in our discipleship?Hannah is the Executive Director of the Center for House Church Theology and discusses her newest book, Faithful Disobedience. Faithful Disobedience is about the Chinese House Church movement, and specifically pastor Wang Yi, who is in prison right now for speaking out against the Chinese government. He reminds us of a Chinese Dietrich Bonhoeffer. At Apollos Watered, we want to renew the church by creating missioholistic Christians, who are dedicated to accomplishing the mission of God in their specific context. Part of the missioholistic approach is bringing in global voices that help us out of our current cultural rut by showing us how they express the mission of God in their world. Nation and her team challenge and encourage the American church to pray for revival and learn from the Chinese church by adopting these four beliefs and practices:1. Believe that prayer is real and powerful.2. Know that the church really is the best gift you can give to your city.3. Don't slow down in evangelism as you encounter pressure or persecution.4. Keep repentance central in the life of the church.Stories of persecuted pastors from China show that the more focus is put on kingdom advancement, the more Christ is seen and glorified. One Chinese pastor said it best: “Survival is not our calling. Rather, the goal of the church is uncompromisable evangelism and discipleship.”

In the new book, Faith in the Wilderness: Words of Exhortation from the Chinese Church, Hannah Nation and co-editor, Simon Liu, offer a perspective of what we can learn from Chinese pastors who are facing persecution.Nation says, “We descendants of Christendom fear cultural marginalization, but let us remember that those on the margins often preach the gospel more boldly, fearlessly, and humbly than those at the center, for they have nothing to lose and no stakeholders to upset.”Hannah Nation joins Collin Hansen on this episode of Gospelbound to discuss persecution, pestilence, judgment, and justification.

In this episode, we sit down with Hannah Nation, co-editor of Faith in the Wilderness: Words of Exhortation from the Chinese Church (released April 2022), to discuss both the book and the state of the Chinese house church.  ** About the book  For many Western Christians, the experience of persecution is remote. For Chinese Christians, on the other hand, suffering is a regular aspect of the Christian life. With a history of faithfulness under persecution and a rich theology of suffering, the Chinese house church movement has much to contribute theologically to the global church. In Faith in the Wilderness, editors Hannah Nation and Simon Liu pull back the curtain on the pastoral heart and eschatological hope behind the house church's remarkable faithfulness. These sermonic letters from Chinese leaders, some written under pseudonyms to protect the authors' identities, will awaken readers to the reality of the gospel—the ground of our hope—in the midst of darkness. Readers will be convicted, encouraged, and edified by the testimony of these fellow believers. She is a graduate of Covenant College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and is also the co-editor of XXX. Hannah is a frequent writer and speaker on both contemporary Chinese gospel movements and the history of women in the church, both academically and popularly. Hannah Nation comes on to talk about Faith in the Wilderness: Words of Exhortation from the Chinese Church (Kirkdale Press). Our conversation gives some background to the Chinese house church pastors who preached these sermons and the history of the House Church movement in China. We have much to learn about how to suffer well from these Chinese brothers and sisters in the faith. As Hannah said in closing, "Our call is what to walk with Christ and reminds ourselves that he is our suffering Lord and he is with us.”

“To avoid walking the way of the cross is to avoid Christ himself,” says Hannah Nation, co-editor of a new book entitled Faith in the Wilderness: Words of Exhortation from the Chinese Church. On this episode of All Things, Hannah—who has been involved in ministry in China for over 20 years—shares stories and perspectives from Chinese house church pastors. Most striking for American Christian listeners will be perhaps the Chinese Christian perspective on suffering: following Jesus and growth in him requires it. Tim Keller, says it well in the book's foreword, “To get a desperately needed perspective, we must listen to the voices of believers in parts of the world where the opposition is much more pervasive and often takes the form of violence.”We have so much to learn from our brothers and sisters in China. As one Chinese pastor says, "In this disease-infested world, there is no time to entertain and serve false gods who lead to death. We are called to practice death every day: to follow closely our Savior Jesus Christ, who gave his life for us. The mission of a Christian is fearless faith in this deadly world." May we practice death every day. May we lose our lives to find them. May we learn from our siblings in China.
