In this episode, Brett Dupree talks about his latest episode of The Church Of Awesome on how your Facebook Feed Is Your Vibration. Then he has a wonderful interview with Amanda Love who talks about her living with undiagnosed fibromyalgia, being diagnosed, and then how she helps others live with their diagnosis. My guest today is Amanda Elise Love. Amanda is a registered holistic nutritionist who works with those with fibromyalgia. She wants you to know the meaning of the word holistic by talking about nutrition and supplements. To think of the word holistic is to realize that it means the integration of the mind, body, and spirit when addressing health issues. She has a long history of illness which culminated with the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia at the age of 20. She knows this syndrome because she has been there. She no longer suffers from the pain, fatigue, and headaches of this syndrome. Now she helps those with fibromyalgia do the same. If healthy, the small intestine, which is about 23 feet long, has a lumen or a wall that is not smooth but is covered with very tiny finger-like projections that make up the mucosal layer of tissue. These cells have an immune function which they perform by only allowing very small molecules to enter the bloodstream where nutrients for all of our cells are then supplied. If our gut is functioning well, this process of permeability allows only beneficial molecules through this mucosal barrier but does not permit larger harmful molecules through this wall. Don’t Feed the Candida !!! Part One Welcome to the podcast Fibromyalgia Real Solutions with Amanda Love. You are listening to episode 6. By the way, you can listen to this podcast wherever you are in the world and at any time that you wish. I always include show notes for those with “ brain fog” so you don’t have to take notes. If you missed my previous episode on Immune health then you may want to listen to it before this one. I do believe that there is a lot of information both good and bad out there about fibromyalgia . As an educator who specializes in this area, I think it is my job to point out to you that beneficial information can be organized in a fashion that will reduce the symptoms of this malady. My name is Amanda Elise Love and I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 9 years ago which influenced my decision to enter the field of nutrition and now I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist who works with those who are suffering from fibromyalgia. Today we are going to explore the world of Candida and its impact on your general health. Candida is a yeast, which is a form of fungus. Yeasts are everywhere, on your skin, in your mouth, and in your gut and also in your reproductive parts especially thriving in warm dark moist places. As you probably know, yeasts are present in many of the things we love to eat such as bread, cheese, wine, pastries, and carbohydrates. Yeasts are fungi that usually live in balance within our bodies ecosystem. The Candida Albicans strain is a fungus that only becomes problematic when it starts to grow out of control competing with the good bacteria for resources. When a person has an overgrowth of candida albicans the condition is known as Candidiasis. The Candida albicans strain exists peacefully with bacteria that produce acid in the gut where the pH is kept low which helps keep fungal infections at bay. But what causes it to go haywire? What about the pH of our bodies? Ordinarily, our bodies like to exist around a normal pH of 7.4. However, certain areas tend to be more acid such as the gut and vaigna. If these areas become more alkaline then Candida will grow and begin to process more sugars. This process creates byproducts that are called mycotoxins which have the potential to change body tissues and can make you sick. These mycotoxins produced by an overgrowth of Candida disrupt cell communication and confuse the body. Many scientists believe that this interruption of cell communication is responsible for many autoimmune conditions. One by-product produced by Candida processing sugars is acetaldehyde which can be toxic. This is one of the same byproducts made when your liver breaks down alcohol. Acetaldehyde can create a deficiency in vitamin B- One which contributes to brain fog, irritability, sugar cravings and depression which is why those with Candida overgrowth can feel like they are constantly hungover. Unexplained and profound fatigue, a general feeling of achiness in the muscles, higher perceptions of pain to touch and pressure, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, poor sleep, never feeling rested, gut issues…the list could go on. These are many of the symptoms experienced by those who have fibromyalgia, a condition that for much of its history in the world of conventional medicine has been poorly understood, misdiagnosed, untreated, or altogether dismissed as unreal. But for those who deal with these symptoms on a daily basis, it is very much real and can make life next to unbearable. Dr. David Brady didn't learn much about the condition during medical school, and what he did learn proved to be incorrect or overshadowed by doubt in the legitimacy of the condition. But as he continued to see patients who presented with the same or similar collections of signs, he was compelled to take a deeper look into how the condition should be characterized, understood, and treated. As the author of The Fibro Fix: Get to the Root of Your Fibromyalgia and Start Reversing Your Chronic Pain and Fatigue in 21 Days, Dr. Brady has developed a toolbox of treatments and methods to address the needs and alleviate the symptoms of his patients, and the very last tool he ever uses is often the immediate go-to in conventional medicine: pharmaceuticals, which are not designed specifically for fibromyalgia, but merely repurposed and relabeled drugs used for other conditions, such as depression or epilepsy. Not only are these drugs largely ineffective, but linked to countless side effects. Dr. Brady discusses how he approaches the assessment of patients who may have fibromyalgia, the elimination process that leads him to feel confident in his diagnoses, and the alternative approaches he takes to the treatment of the condition, which includes heart rate variability exercises, improving quality of sleep, naturally increasing the levels of serotonin in the body, using herbal medicines that calm the central nervous system, making dietary changes, and implementing meditative and other relaxation practices in the daily routines of his patients. In this episode of The Dr. Hedberg Show, I interview Dr. David Brady about how to overcome Fibromyalgia and his new book The Fibro Fix. We talked about the history of fibromyalgia diagnosis, the causes of fibromyalgia, the difference between "Classic" Fibromyalgia and "Pseudo" Fibromyalgia, treatment strategies, supplements for Fibromyalgia, and much more. If you have Fibromyalgia or know someone who does, this is one interview you definitely don't want to miss. Dr. Hedberg: Well, welcome, everyone, to "The Dr. Hedberg Show." This is Dr. Hedberg, and I'm really looking forward to the conversation today. We have Dr. David Brady on. And if you look at the history of "The Dr. Hedberg Show," we've actually never had a repeat guest. And so, Dr. Brady is gonna be the first repeat guest. Our last podcast discussed the GI map stool test from Diagnostic Solutions. So, I urge you to check that out. So, for those of you who don't know Dr. Brady, he really is the foremost authority on properly diagnosing and treating fibromyalgia, which is what we'll be talking about today. He's been featured in top media outlets like "Elle" and "NPR." And he's also published in leading peer-reviewed medical journals including "Open Journal of Rheumatology and Autoimmune Disease and Integrative Medicine," a clinician's journal. He's published chapters on fibromyalgia in definitive medical textbooks, including "Advancing Medicine with Food and Nutrients" and "Integrative Gastroenterology." He has presented at prestigious medical conferences, including the Annual Symposium of Functional Medicine and the Integrative Healthcare Symposium. He is in private practice at the Whole Body Medicine in Fairfield, Connecticut. And Dr. Brady is also the Director of the Human Nutrition Institute at the University of Bridgeport, as well as the Chief Medical Officer of Designs for Health and Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. So, Dr. Brady witnessed his own mother suffer through the ringer of the medical system. So, Dr. Brady is uniquely passionate not only as a doctor, but also as a patient advocate. So, his website, more specifically for his book, we'll be talking about today is fibrofix.com and then his practice website is drdavidbrady.com. So, Dr. Brady, welcome to the show. David: Dr. Hedberg, thanks for having me back. I didn't realize I would be the first repeat guest, so that's quite an honor, and thank you. Dr. Hedberg: Yeah. So, I'm looking forward to this. Let's really dig into fibromyalgia. And so, you know, you witnessed your mother going through the medical system and then you became very interested in fibromyalgia. Is there any particular event that really got you interested in this condition? David: Well, I got an interest in sort of integrative medicine, as we would call it today, or like just routes of care and ways of looking at healthcare conditions, particularly complex chronic conditions that were not the, you know, real standard orthodox way of doing things or standard of care probably because of that experience with my mom growing up. I mean, my mother battled breast cancer most of my childhood, and double mastectomy, got radiation and chemo, and all that stuff back in the '70s when it was even more brutal than it is now. And she found some of her best outcomes and best quality of life, unfortunately it was toward the end, with some providers who were doing more sort of integrative complementary medicine type of stuff. So, it really opened my eyes to that. And even though I originally went and became an engineer and worked in aerospace and stuff, I always had a sort of a desire to come back to dealing with the human condition, and I had originally thought I would use my sort of engineering background, and biomechanics, and things like that, and to go into research, you know, in biomedical research. I had the engineering background, I was looking for ways to get the medical, clinical background.
Excited to talk to a doctor that I have been a big fan of for a LONG time. There aren't that many fellow ND/DCs out there and this one has done some extraordinary things in his career.
Fibromyalgia affects many people and is often confused with other medical conditions. As it is often misdiagnosed, it often does not get appropriate treatment leading to the frustration of fibromyalgia patients. Dr. Brady discusses his multi-prong approach to finding the underlying causes and comorbid conditions. He addresses toxins and detoxification: the role of gut health, mitochondrial dysfunction, thyroid health, diet, mood, sleep, stress, and stress reduction.
Fibromyalgia typically includes the symptoms of fatigue and pain, but the challenge is that many other conditions also cause fatigue and pain. So how do you know whether you have fibromyalgia and should peruse treatments for fibromyalgia or if you have something like hypothyroid or arthritis? We speak with Fibro-Fix author Dr. David Brady to answer this question.
