Your thyroid is not just “another hormone”—it's the maestro that sets the tempo for your whole body, and it especially needs love as progesterone drops in perimenopause. But here's the problem: so many practitioners still miss the real story. If all you've had checked is your TSH and you were told “it's normal,” you could still be sidelined by sluggish thyroid symptoms—because so much more is happening under the surface. A full thyroid panel really matters. That means pushing for TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. But it doesn't stop with testing. You need someone looking at your labs with a functional lens (the ‘optimal' prevention-focused ranges, not just “fine for the average population”) and someone who understands the nuances—like how stress, inflammation, and gut health all play a role in your thyroid feeling sluggish. Here is what we cover in this episode: Top Symptoms of Hypothyroidism: Think constipation, hair loss (even in your brows!), feeling chilly all the time, low libido, dry skin, stubborn bloating, and more. If you nod along to two or more, this episode is for you! Why “Normal” Thyroid Labs Can Still Mean Trouble: Many women have labs that come back “normal,” yet their symptoms scream otherwise. I explain why that happens and what labs you actually need. What a Full Thyroid Panel Really Looks Like: Most practitioners aren't running the full panel! I spell it out for you (hint: it's more than just TSH and T4). Reverse T3—The Missing Piece: This marker is rarely tested, but it tells you if your thyroid hormone is actually getting into your cells where it belongs, or if it's being blocked! The Role of Gut Health and Minerals: If you want lasting thyroid health (and overall well-being), you have to zero in on gut health and the minerals your thyroid loves—spoiler: copper is way more important than you think!   You may also enjoy this episode: EPISODE 43: All about thyroid health with Annabel Bateman EPISODE 114: Thyroid health in midlife: post-illness autoimmunity/hypothyroidism, why TSH will rise with iodine & this is OK, progesterone & thyroid health & more!   LIVE TRAINING: The Perimenopause Reset: From Exhausted to Energised. But that doesn't mean it's one-size-fits-all.In this episode, we're taking a deep dive into the topic of birth control and hypothyroidism. We'll walk you through the different birth control options—from IUDs and hormonal pills to barrier methods and sterilization—and explore how they might interact with your thyroid health. We'll talk about why it's essential to share your full medical history with your doctor, especially when you're on thyroid medications, and why monitoring your hormone levels after starting a new contraceptive could help you avoid unwanted surprises. Plus, we'll shine a light on some lesser-known concerns—like how certain hormonal methods might contribute to weight gain, mood changes, or other symptoms familiar to thyroid patients. Nailing your training but can't shift those stubborn kilos? Maybe you’re battling gut issues despite a dialled-in nutrition plan or even dragging yourself through sessions after a solid 8 hours sleep. If this sounds all too familiar, it might be that your thyroid has been flying under the radar. As a sports dietitian, I'm seeing more triathletes pushing through these warning signs – constant fatigue, resistant weight, bloating, and mysterious gut problems – not realising there's a tiny butterfly-shaped gland in their neck calling the shots. Thyroid health isn’t my area of specialty so today I’m joined by Registered Dietitian and Functional Practitioner, Alisha Knicely, to talk about about how this powerful gland affects everything from your race-day performance to your Monday morning motivation. Diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid disease in 2017, Alisha’s drive to understand what was happening in her body was a turning point in her career. She now specialises in Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism and helps her clients to reverse the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction. The Performance Powerhouse You're Overlooking Your thyroid is your body's metabolic control centre. It regulates your heart rate, energy levels, and even how quickly you bounce back from those brutal brick sessions. For triathletes pushing their bodies to the limit, optimal thyroid function isn't just helpful – it's essential. The Nutrient Trifecta Want your thyroid firing on all cylinders? You need three key players: iodine, selenium, and zinc. But here's the catch – more isn't always better. Like race-day nutrition, it's about getting the balance right. Strategic food choices like seafood, organ meats, and nuts can deliver these nutrients without the risks of over-supplementation. Red Flags You Can't Ignore If you're experiencing: - Unexplained fatigue despite proper rest - Stubborn weight changes - Slower recovery between sessions - Mood swings affecting your training drive It's time for a proper thyroid assessment. Don't guess – get tested. A comprehensive blood panel including TSH, T3, T4, and thyroid antibodies will tell you exactly where you stand. The Overtraining Connection Think you can push through anything? Think again. Excessive training without proper recovery can throw your thyroid into chaos. Those sleepless nights and persistent fatigue aren't badges of honour – they're warnings that your body needs a different approach. Your Action Plan for Optimal Thyroid Function Fuel Smart: Focus on nutrient-dense whole foods that support thyroid function Guard Your Gut: Your thyroid depends on proper nutrient absorption Manage Stress: Yes, that includes training stress – more isn't always better Beyond the Basics Living with a thyroid condition doesn't mean hanging up your tri suit. Whether you're managing Hashimoto's or just optimising your performance, it's about working with your body, not against it. Regular monitoring and professional guidance can keep you racing strong. She needed all the health and strength she could get to take care of her husband who finally succumbed to brain cancer in 2019.  The same year she had the strength to become VP of Paramount bank as her employment.  It seemed that the more life-disasters that she overcame, the stronger she got! As generally happens when people are overly stressed, even hormone replacement is overwhelmed.  In 2018 had a recurrence of rheumatoid arthritis, and she developed Hypothyroidism and Insulin resistance.  Grace, my NP at BioBalance Health, helped her treat her thyroid and weight gain and guide her to overcome these medical problems including losing the weight she gained with insulin resistance.   In 2022 she met, and married Mark Behlmann, who she served on the same charity boards with, but she had never met before.  She got her second chance with Mark at finding love and fulfillment in her partnership with him.  He encouraged her to compete in the. Ms. Missouri Senior, and she employed her energy, talent for singing, her own passion for success and service to become the 2024 Ms. Missouri Senior. In her role she encourages women to use their gifts to achieve everything that they can in life and to find a doctor to help them survive loss of hormones after menopause, so they can continue their service to family and society throughout their lives…she is the best example I can think of living your life to the fullest every day, no matter how old you are!

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions:      Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral, Thank you so much for the invaluable insights you provide — I truly appreciate it! I have two unrelated questions: 1. Do you have any thoughts or ideas on the potential causes of snoring? My husband isn't overweight, so I'm thinking it may be related to positional factors or anatomy. He doesn't experience apnea, but the snoring does disrupt his sleep. 2. I have a product from a functional medicine supplement company containing 350mg of linolenic acid and 1400mg of linoleic acid, both derived from high-quality, cold-pressed oils. If someone has an imbalanced omega-3:omega-6 ratio, with a higher omega-6 …it seems like this product would not help balance the ratio on its own and additional omega-3 supplementation be necessary, is that correct? Thanks again for your time                     Sharon: Hello. I have been listening to various topics on your podcasts. I was curious about the citricidal drops. You have mentioned you can use two drops with a neti pot and use that for a nasal rinse. How often is it ok to do this? I also see it used as a urinary tract protocol and as part of the CBO protocol. But then in one podcast, you said you shouldn't use the drops longer than 3 weeks. I'm not sure how long you use it for the urinary tract protocol (didn't see that on website), but can you use it for that and the CBO if you do those protocols back to back? How long should you wait between uses of the drops? Is urinary tract protocol only for a UTI or is it also a general urinary health protocol? Thank you. (I asked about neti pot on FB but seems like no one has used it for nasal rinsing.)                                                                                                Terri: I have read a couple of studies about Berberine being contraindicated for those with Hashimoto's/hypothyroidism because it can interfere with absorption of thyroid hormone. There seem to be so many other benefits that I thought I'd come to you, the expert, the king and master of all things health, to answer my question…would you discourage someone with subclinical hypothyroidism and not taking any thyroid hormone from taking Berberine? Thank you for taking my question and for being so willing to help out the community with your wealth of knowledge. You truly are a blessing to so many!                                                                                                                                                                                                 Brooke: I've been doing coffee enemas for 2+ years now, once as often as 2-3 times and week and now 1-2 times a month. I used to have a much easier time holding the coffee, easily holding 10-15 minutes. I usually do two back to back rounds 10-15 minutes each (1-2cups each time). Lately I can't hold more than a few minutes, especially the first round. Also, I find that the day after a coffee enema I struggle to have a natural bowel movement. I'd say about 50% of the time I dont have a bowel movement the next day, is that okay?                                                                                                                 Bryna: Hi Dr. Cabral. About a year ago I came close to scheduling an appointment with your office and hope to do so again. Lately, I've been binge listening to your podcast making a list of questions and decided to send a message. What do you consider to be the healthiest frozen “treat”? I have reflux & gut issues and am always looking for ways to cool things down. After comparing ice cream / sorbet / gelato I concluded frozen yogurt was prob. the healthiest. Do you agree? Do you think frozen yogurt is a healthy snack in GEN? Could not find this topic when I searched the archives. Could ask a dozen more Q's but just want to say I found your podcast back in ‘17 and have been listening off and on ever since. Iodine deficiency is becoming incredibly common because most people aren't getting enough in their food, and chemicals like fluoride and chlorine in the water supply can deplete it. Vegans are at increased risk for iodine deficiency because they aren't consuming iodine foods such as shellfish, dairy, eggs, and other seafood. Here are 7 strange iodine deficiency signs to look out for. 1. Outer eyebrow thinningIf the outer third of your eyebrow is thinning, you could have an iodine deficiency.2. Hair lossIodine is vital in ensuring that you have adequate thyroid hormones to support your hair. 3. HoarsenessThis may feel like a lump in your throat due to an enlarged thyroid. 4. Enlarged tongueIndentations on the outside of the tongue signify an enlarged tongue. 5. Unexplained weight gainWhen your thyroid doesn't have enough iodine, it can slow your metabolism, leading to weight gain.6. Increased estrogen Heavy periods, excessive cramping, headaches, and weight gain in the hips all signify increased estrogen. Testosterone may also decrease in both men and women if the thyroid isn't functioning properly. 7. Lowered IQThyroid function affects many parts of the brain, including the portion responsible for making decisions, problem-solving, attention, focus, creativity, and memory. Iodine is vital for properly functioning thyroid hormones, which affect every part of the body. Thyroid hormones affect the ovaries and the testicles, regulate estrogen dominance, and help mood and cognitive function.Hypothyroidism is one of the most common health problems worldwide! Selenium is also essential for the thyroid, especially for conditions like Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. Rather than waiting for iodine deficiency symptoms, add the following iodine-rich foods to your diet to help prevent a problem:•Sea kelp/seaweed•Shellfish•Fish from the ocean•Eggs•Dairy Get a high-quality water filter to eliminate chlorine and fluoride in your drinking water!

Many people with Hashimoto's have experienced it—the frustration of knowing something is wrong but being repeatedly dismissed by doctors. This week, Inna welcomes Dr. Efrat Lamandre (Dr. E) to uncover why so many thyroid patients struggle to get answers and how medical gaslighting keeps them stuck in a cycle of misdiagnosis and neglect.Dr. E, a best-selling author and expert in patient advocacy, explains why conventional medicine often overlooks key thyroid issues. She shares how doctors are trained to rely on a limited set of tools, without digging deeper. When those tests come back “normal,” patients are told their symptoms aren't real or that their fatigue, weight gain, and brain fog must be due to stress or aging. But the reality? Hashimoto's and thyroid dysfunction go far beyond TSH, and without the right tests, people can go undiagnosed for years.Inna and Dr. E dive into the most common signs of medical gaslighting and why it happens, from unnecessary weight loss advice to outright dismissal of symptoms. They also reveal why conventional providers often refuse to run crucial tests. Heather's story, a real-life case from Inna's Thyroid Mystery Solved program illustrates how damaging this dismissal can be and why proper testing and advocacy make all the difference.Beyond lab tests, Dr. E emphasizes an often-overlooked key to healing: nervous system regulation. Before addressing diet, supplements, or detox, the body needs to feel safe, something many Hashimoto's patients don't even realize is missing. She shares simple yet powerful ways to support the nervous system that anyone can do right away.If you've ever felt dismissed by your doctor or wondered why your symptoms aren't taken seriously, this episode will open your eyes to the truth about thyroid care—and, more importantly, empower you with the knowledge to take control of your health.See full show here:https://innatopiler.com/podcasts/doctors-dismissing-hashimotos-symptoms-medical-gaslighting/For more information about everything Hashimoto's please visit InnaTopiler.comIf you are struggling to lose weight with Hashimoto's, Inna has a 10 day plan just for you at InnaTopiler.com/jumpstartIf you don't yet know your thyroid type, please be sure you sign up for Inna's next free training at InnaTopiler.com/training

Check out today's questions:    Abby: Hi Dr. Cabral, I've listened to several of your podcasts on saunas. If you had to pick one for your home, would it be a dry “finnish” sauna or an infrared sauna based on the health benefits? I know the dry saunas have been around forever and there are hundreds of studies on their benefits where as there doesn't seem to be as many on the infrared saunas. Thanks!                                                                                                                                                                                          Elsa: Hi Dr. Cabral.Just finished my first ever 7 day detox and getting ready to do some tests. I'm 58 years old, work out regularly and eat a relatively healthy diet. Was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism many years ago and taking Np Thyroid at the present time. Three and a half years ago was surprised by a heart attack which lead to the placement of several stents on my LAD. This made me focus on my health and trying to find out what the underlying causes were although all explanations I got was that it was all genetics. Of course cardiologist wants me to take statins, aspirin and blood thinners for life which I'm not willing to do if I can help it. My question is about blood thinners and aspirin.Could something like proteolytic enzymes combined with omega-3 supplements work in a similar way?            Morgan: Hi Dr. Cabral,I've beenLoving your podcast for quite some time now. I'm wondering where you recommend to start when diagnosed with candida potentially due to mold. My doctor also thought I had a parasite and SIBO at this time and started me on albendazole and xifaxan. When taking Zyon, my fungal symptoms, significantly worsened. I started having severe dandruff, bloating, gas, fatigue. She now wants me to take prescription itraconazole for up to six months, along with atrantil PRO (which contains probiotics), magnesium, IGY, and DAO. What are your thoughts on these recommendations? Six months seems like a long period of time to me. Is this normally how long it takes, even if going the natural route? Would it be worthwhile to start the CBO protocol instead? Thanks for all you do!            Alex: Dr C- you are the best. You've changed our lives forever. Can you give us your opinion on thermograms for detecting health issues, cancer, etc compared to the PreNuvo scans? Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.                        Alex: Can you please do an entire podcast on POTS? symptomology, root causes, how to fix, how to help with symptoms while fixing? So many people I know have it and don't have any answers. It would be great to be able to send them to one podcast instead of piecing together house call questions. Deep in the misty heart of Appalachia, where ancient mountains whisper secrets and shadows stretch just a little too long, there's a legend lurking at every turn. In this chilling episode, we step into the Devil's domain—literally. From the eerie Devil's Tramping Ground, where nothing dares grow, to the ominous Devil's Looking Glass, where the Prince of Darkness himself is said to gaze into the abyss, these mountains hold more than just ghost stories. But it's not just the devil who roams these haunted hills. Hooded figures appearing in the dead of night, sinister fiddle-playing that lures the unsuspecting into otherworldly gatherings, and faceless apparitions warning trespassers—Appalachia is alive with spirits, cryptids, and things that go bump (or boom) in the night. Spooky friends, get ready for one of our most chilling investigations yet! We teamed up with Kaeyln Moore of Heart Starts Pounding for a deep dive into the haunted Henry Derby House in Salem, Massachusetts—a home with ties to the Salem Witch Trials and a reputation for ghostly activity. What started as a routine ghost hunt quickly turned into something much bigger. Spirits led us on a breadcrumb trail through the house, setting off our REM pod like never before, whispering eerie messages through Ghost Tube, and ultimately guiding us to one of the most controversial paranormal tools: a Ouija board. But there's a TWIST we DID NOT see coming... From sleep paralysis demons to haunted pianos, from a ghost girl lurking on the landing to a supernatural mission from beyond, this episode has EVERYTHING. Plus, Kaeyln actually stayed the night (while we got the hell out of there), leading to a shocking morning-after revelation that changed everything we thought we knew about this house.
