Specialist after specialist told Autumn Smith nothing could be done to alleviate her physical and mental health distress. As a last-ditch effort, she turned to the power of whole foods. She cleaned up her diet with Paleo-inspired eating and improved her gut in just 30 days. The changes also decreased her anxiety, increased her mental sharpness, and discovered her inner vibrancy. That experience propelled Autumn to help others capture the power of whole foods through quality food products produced by regenerative agricultural practices. In 2013, she and her husband, Chas, along with another family member and friend, launched Paleovalley. They built a company dedicated to helping people get essential nutrients without added sugars, grains, and other harmful ingredients. With meat being the central focus of their business, they set out to learn all they could about production and regenerative farming. In 2018, they launched Wild Pastures, a regenerative meat delivery service, and recently opened Wild Pastures Burger Company, their flagship fast casual burger restaurant in Boulder, Colorado. This conservation gets into the problems with current methods of animal agriculture and possible solutions. You'll find out more about the nutritional differences of animal products depending on how they're raised. Autumn says meat labels can be tricky, too, so she breaks down the jargon and tells you what to look for and what to avoid.Autumn advocates for meat's many advantages and works to dispel the myths that continue to persist about meat consumption. The amount of women who deal with disordered eating on a daily basis is stifling. These are women, and may be you, who think about food from the moment they wake until they go to bed at night. They focus on what they will eat, what they won't eat, and how much. Least of all they focus on how hungry or satisfied they are. And they'll come to you for help with weight issues that are potentially catching up with them after struggling for years or retriggered because of the changes that occur during menopause. At no other time since puberty has the body gone through such a major change than as menopause, even including pregnancy which has it's own challenges and changes. At menopause though may have the advantage of having other individual's health at stake. The midlife woman is often influencing daughters and knows it. That may make the need or desire to change stronger. 00:00 My Guest: Mindy Gorman-Plutzer brings 2 decades of experience to her private practice as a Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach. Mindy's life experience and training inspired her to create a framework that combines functional nutrition, positive psychology, and mind/body science; introducing a compassionate resolution to physical and emotional challenges resulting from chronic and complex health issues, as they relate to Eating Disorders. She's the author of The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What It Can Do FOR You. Questions we answer in this episode: 03:01 What are some things you'd like health coaches and trainers to know about E.D. recovery? 07:10 How often might it be true that a woman doesn't want to change yet, how would a fitness or health coach positively coach clients with disordered eating? 08:20 What are examples of “active listening”? 10:35 A coach or trainer can easily feel the all eyes on her and be dealing with a disorder themselves. What do you recommend a coach do working with clients with disordered eating, while they currently are being triggered themselves? It's not uncommon for midlife women to be in denial about disordered eating, or to simply not recognize it because it has been a pattern for so long. When they're ready, the teacher shows up, and it might be you. Eating disorder recovery may not be your first concern. But you'd be surprised at the percent of midlife women triggered into eating disruption again or for the first time. In today's episode, we talk with Amanda Love, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and Eating Psychology Coach, about food, how much the choices we make on what and how much we eat can affect our life when we overdo it, but also how carefully made decisions about the food we take can help easing some serious and painful health conditions, like fibromyalgia for example. Ricardo Gonzalez-Jurado is the owner and operator of the sacred Samadhi Yoga Retreat, a 30-acre nature preserve in the Texas Hill Country dedicated to silence and yogic education for children and children at heart. Through the Samadhi Yoga Retreat, Ricardo and his extended team of practitioners are dedicated to teaching children and adults the philosophy of yoga with the intention of planting seeds of harmony, balance and love. One of the most fascinating features of the Samadhi Yoga Retreat is a three story cedar pyramid designed and built by Ricardo as a tribute to silence and teaching yoga philosophy to all that inquire (we had the opportunity to attend a sound healing class hosted in the pyramid!). The retreat center is available for yoga retreats, meditation, and other wellness events with a focus of connection, silence, and well-being. In this episode, Shanna and Tracey chat with Ricardo about his journey from El Salvador to the Texas Hill Country (via Guatemala, Belize & Houston!), his early exposure to yoga as a child and the impact this ultimately had on him creating the Samadhi Yoga Retreat (and by creating we mean literally building the three story pyramid and accompanying buildings!). He also shares the three philosophies that guide his life as well as the overall philosophy of yoga so you may want to grab a pen and paper before settling into this wisdom packed episode. Because we love you and want you to easily take these powerful philosophies into your own life, we're sharing his three life philosophies here: 1.) I Am Because We Are (focusing on community, unity and sharing with one another) 2.) “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” - Maya Angelou 3.) "If your plan is for one year, plant rice. If your plan is for ten years, plant trees. If your plan is for a hundred years, educate children.” - Confucius Definitely tune into the episode to hear how he came across these particular philosophies (the first one might bring a tear to your eye; we know it did for us!) as well as to expand on the full meaning of them. Welcome to the show and happy December! I have been sitting on this gem of an episode for 2 months. And today I finally get to share it with you all! This episode I am joined by Marina Maier. What started out as an attempt to heal almost 30 years of her own unhappy relationship with food and body, led her to my training as an Eating Psychology Coach and to starting her Coaching Practice “May You Be Well”. Helping others cultivate a happy and healthy relationship with food, body and self is her passion and calling.Marina works with women around overeating, emotional eating, habitual eating, weight and body image concerns so that they can finally feel at home in their own skin.Marina and I met 3 years ago. I say two years in the recording, because it was Summer 2019 when we spent a week together in Colorado. But we met when we both began training with the Institute for the Psychology of Eating in the fall of 18 and became friends in Spring of 19. Marina has a wealth of knowledge on eating psychology and is a self proclaimed nerd when it comes to the brain. In our chat, Marina explains the brain of the eater and how this impacts our relationship with food. She takes a complex topic, the brain, and makes it easy to understand.Let's dive into my chat with Marina.
This week we talk with Becky Rosenthal about the lost art of Shiatsu, a Japanese form of bodywork that uses the practitioner's fingers (Shiatsu translates to “finger pressure”), thumbs and palms to apply pressure to certain areas of the body called meridian channels, where the focus is on bringing the body back to homeostasis by working with the “energy body”. To help demystify this process of reading and working with stuck energy, Becky shares how shaking Shanna's legs during their session revealed the need for Shanna to dance more! (You have to tune in to find out!) Becky blends her palpable understanding of the physical body from her background in health education and massage therapy with the deeper, intuitive art of knowing how energy flows through the body from her training in Shiatsu along with a mindful practice of compassionate listening from her background as an ordained Buddhist to offer clients a multi-layered approach to determining and addressing what is going in their physical and emotional bodies. As with many wellness practices and modalities, anyone can benefit from Shiatsu but Becky says it really opens the door to begin a healing process, so the people who benefit the most are those who are ready to commit to a healing journey. According to Becky's favorite quote and a strong tenant to her practice, “stopping, calming and resting are preconditions for healing”. With today's world being so fast paced and highly stressful, along with the effects of isolation from 2020, people are, unknowingly, energetically locked in freeze or flight modes which is causing the body to not digest food (and life) in the most optimal ways. Booking a Shiatsu session with Becky begins this process of healing by stopping, calming and resting, at least for the time your with her and in her space, which she has intentionally created to honor these needed elements of healing. Often people come to Becky by referral, having no understanding of what Shiatsu is or what can come from the session; they just know someone they trust said to they benefitted from it. We hope SoLive's personal experience can serve as a beneficial referral for you, should it resonate. Thanks so much for joining us! This week we speak with Jeanne Philippus, owner of J. Philippus Art Studio & Gallery in San Antonio, TX about the power of art and healing. Her studio offers 90 minute classes in glass art, resin on charcuterie boards and acrylic pouring to individuals, groups, couples and parties, where all classes can be made kid friendly. Jeanne's intention is to create a safe space for participants to creatively express who they are. Even though she guides and leads participants in these glasses, she says there are no rules to follow. She simply wants people to give themselves permission to sit and create. Whether you're an experienced artist or a complete newbie, these classes help you discover your inner artist and so much more! It's the “so much more” that Jeanne says people unexpectedly respond to once they've attended a class (and has them coming back for more!). The 90 minute classes provide an opportunity to slowdown and be present as the process of creating art naturally and effortlessly pulls participants into what they're doing. This heightened focus allows the class to become a form of meditation, where space is created for aspects of inner healing to begin taking place. It allows people to get out of their own way by effortlessly stepping out of their stressful thoughts into the present moment. And in some instances, it opens up space for buried traumas to surface and be healed. Jeanne truly believes you can turn something broken into something beautiful, but it takes time. Her art studio offers a permission slip for others to take the necessary time to begin this process of inner healing through an outer expression of art. This is all by intention as Jeanne prayed this would be a place of healing prior to opening her studio. The response to her classes overwhelmingly affirms this! Tune in to hear Jeanne's personal story of using art to heal her own trauma of losing her first husband early in their marriage as well as how it inspired her to open an art studio focused on helping others heal though the power of art. The studio is open from 11:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through Saturday. For a list of classes, check out her website: JPhilippusart.com (or call the studio). Today, I'm talking to Mindy Gorman-Plutzer, Certified Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner and Eating Psychology Coach. Mindy's life experience and training inspired her to create a framework that combines functional nutrition, positive psychology, and mind/body science. Mindy is passionate about helping others recover from eating disorders and create a healthier lifestyle. Her approach tackles the root cause of the issue, and emphasizes that how and why you eat is just as important as what you eat. In addition, Mindy is the author of The Freedom Promise: 7 Steps To Stop Fearing What Food Will Do TO You and Start Embracing What It Can Do FOR You. In this episode, Mindy talks about her personal journey recovery, the treatment limitations when seeking help and how she found the right support that enabled true healing. She explores how eating disorders become solutions to different trauma or stressors, and the way they can becomes a means of self-soothing, and with healing, other healthier coping strategies can be explored. Mindy works from a functional medicine perspective, involving healing the gut, and she explains her reasoning for not working with the ‘all foods it' model in recovery. This is an inspiring and encouraging episode, as Mindy radiates passion, enthusiasm and deep caring for her clients and people healing from eating disorders. In the spring of 2018, at the age of 57, Kathy Elkind walked the Grande Randonnée Cinq (GR5) with her husband of 27 years. The 2,286K (1,400-mile) journey starts at the North Sea in The Netherlands and goes through Belgium, Luxembourg, and the whole length of France through the Alps to end at the warm Mediterranean in Nice. Kathy always longed for an epic adventure, but the time was never right. Finally, her children had flown the nest, and she had shifted from a fertile body to a not fertile body – What could this new body do? It was the perfect time for a quest: to pause, reflect and explore. Could her marriage sustain and thrive on a long walk? After two months on the GR5, they entered the mighty Alps—five weeks of alpine views, mountain refuges, and exertion. Her walking became more than meditative; she fell into an ethereal pace where she became the air and the landscape. In her own words: “Life was not about me. It was about the beauty of the world. This truth was what I had longed for but did not know.” At home, she stepped into the last third of her Life, more in love with her husband, accepting the unknown, knowing her power, and brave enough to write a book one step at a time (she has dyslexia and did not learn to read until I was in 7th grade). Kathy has come to believe it's necessary for women entering the last third of their life to experience a quest or challenge. It can be anything they love – going to 25 art museums, swimming or dancing 50 days in a row. There is a unique challenge for every woman. Kathy is an Eating Psychology Coach, a Teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion, and owner of Elkind Nourishment. Kathy helps women feel their emotions instead of eating their emotions and feel comfortable in their bodies. She is writing a memoir about her adventure. Hunter talks to Jenny Berk about How To Intuitively Eat & Love Your Body. Today you get permission to throw away your scale and all the “rules” about eating. It's time to tune into your inner wisdom for greater health and happiness. Some big takeaways from this episode include: 1. You can't tell on the outside who struggles with food. 2. Why you should tune inward to your own wisdom rather than than listen to dieting experts. 3. Implications for parenting: It's so natural to eat intuitively yet so foreign to many people because we've been indoctrinated at a young age to allow other people to tell us how to nourish ourselves. In Episode #45 on The Jen Mavros Show we rock out with the lively, passionate and gorgeous Audra Baker; Sexuality and Eating Psychology Coach. "Every woman deserves to realize her birthright of pure unadulterated blissed-out pleasure. Once this happens, holy shit… everything else just falls into place. You naturally let go of emotional eating and choose healthier habits for your life….not because you have to… but because you truly want to. Sweet love, if you're struggling with your body, wishing it was different, skinnier, healthier, or sexier, there's often a deep distortion and disconnect with your own relationship to yourself. And I'm sorry to say, there's not a fitness regime, or diet on the planet that can help with that. Your “excess weight” is the accumulation of your unresolved stuff. Instead of processing your wounds and hurts, you store them away on your belly and thighs and butt. And this is where they're going to stay until you heal and love them away. If you actually want lasting transformation with your body, you have to bravely go where few have gone: Heal and create a loving relationship with yourself. Heal your disconnections around your body, sex, and sexuality. Heal your relationship with food." And Audra is here to guide us along the path back to LOVE.
