Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 8-28-2025: Dr. Dawn opens with concerning research about PFAS (forever chemicals) found in feminine hygiene products. Chinese and American studies reveal significant concentrations in paper diapers, sanitary pads, and especially period underwear, with some products containing up to 77,000 parts per million. These compounds can absorb through skin and never break down in the environment, raising health concerns for products used in intimate contact. She shares research on vitamin K (MK7) for nocturnal leg cramps in older adults. A study of people 65 and older showed that 180 micrograms of menaquinone-7 reduced cramp episodes by half over two months while placebo group episodes doubled. This form of vitamin K also helps direct calcium to bones rather than arteries when taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Dr. Dawn explains how gut bacteria are evolving to digest food thickeners like guar gum found in ketchup, salad dressing, and toothpaste. Previously considered non-digestible, these cellulose-based compounds are now being broken down by bacterial enzymes that develop when people eat high-fiber diets, potentially adding hidden calories to processed foods beyond what labels indicate. An emailer asks about Botox brain effects after reading a study in Advanced Science. Dr. Dawn critiques the research methodology, explaining that the organoid model using fetal cells doesn't replicate real-world conditions. She argues the cosmetic doses used are orders of magnitude smaller than the doses used in the study. The study concentrations are much higher than doses used in even the most aggressive therapeutic applications and concludes the study doesn't provide compelling evidence for brain toxicity concerns. Another emailer inquires about myalgia encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome genome research. Dr. Dawn explains that while GWAS studies identifying eight genetic loci are scientifically interesting, they don't provide practical diagnostic tools or treatment insights. She notes the resemblance of ME/CFS to long COVID and describes the hallmark symptom of post-exertional malaise lasting days after activity. Dr. Dawn presents encouraging dementia prevention research showing Mediterranean diet benefits. The study found 13% reduced dementia risk overall, with 25% reduction for those improving adherence. Most significantly, people with the high-risk APOE4 gene variant showed the greatest protective effect from eating leafy vegetables, fish, whole grains, and limiting processed foods. She provides an extensive discussion of hormone therapy for mental health, criticizing the medical field's neglect of hormonal causes of depression and anxiety. Dr. Dawn explains how 35% of men over 45 are testosterone deficient and describes perimenopause effects on women's mental health, including 30% increased depression risk and 112% increased bipolar disorder risk during hormonal transitions. Dr. Dawn criticizes Gameday men's health clinics for exploitative practices, describing their "man cave" marketing approach and expensive injection protocols. She explains how normal testosterone production involves daily mini-spikes rather than weekly injections, and discusses clomiphene citrate as an alternative that can improve both testosterone levels and fertility without suppressing sperm production. She concludes with a cautionary tale about imaging studies, describing a patient whose X-ray showing arthritis led to activity restrictions that may have worsened her condition. Dr. Dawn emphasizes that movement and weight-bearing exercise are crucial for joint health, even when imaging shows degenerative changes. She warns against letting scans dictate treatment over clinical symptoms and urges a "physical therapy first" approach.
This week on Ditch the Labcoat, Dr. Mark Bonta sits down with Dr. Diana Driscoll, an optometrist, researcher, and internationally recognized authority on the autonomic nervous system—who also happens to be one of the rare non-MDs to join the show. After her own sudden and life-altering health collapse, Dr. Driscoll found herself deep in the world of dysautonomia—a group of disorders affecting the autonomic nervous system, responsible for all those automatic functions in our bodies we don't usually have to think about. Finding few answers from doctors, and confronted by a system that too often shuns “invisible illnesses,” Dr. Driscoll became her own medical detective, pioneering research into conditions like Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and unlocking innovative approaches to treatment. In this eye-opening conversation, Dr. Driscoll and Dr. Bonta tackle the complex, often misunderstood world of autonomic dysfunction, the science behind “mystery illnesses,” and the frustrating gaps in our medical knowledge. From the lived experience of being a patient who was told “it's all in your head,” to developing new therapeutics and advocating for others, Dr. Driscoll's story is as inspiring as it is informative. If you've ever struggled with unexplained symptoms, felt dismissed by the healthcare system, or just want to understand the evolving science behind these often-invisible disorders—this episode is for you. Plug in for a candid, practical, and hope-filled discussion that challenges the boundaries of what medicine knows today and explores the frontier where suffering finally meets science.Episode HighlightsInvisible Illness Is Real — Validation for patients with unexplained symptoms is crucial; their suffering is genuine, not imagined or "all in their head."Medicine's Knowledge Blindspots — The medical establishment often lacks answers—and even language—for complex autonomic disorders like dysautonomia and POTS.Patient-Led Discovery Matters — Dr. Driscoll's personal journey from patient to researcher demonstrates the power of self-advocacy in pushing knowledge forward.Autonomic System Ignorance — Most clinicians receive minimal training about the autonomic nervous system, leading to missed diagnoses and inadequate care. One Size Doesn't Fit All — There is no single solution for autonomic dysfunction—treatments must be individualized to each patient's complex presentation.Beyond Symptom Management — Suppressing symptoms (e.g., racing heart) without understanding the root cause can worsen patient outcomes or miss vital clues. The Inflammatory Connection — Inflammation, triggered by infections or stress, can drive autonomic dysfunction—a framework for science to pursue targeted therapies.Necessity of Clinical Innovation — When guidelines and therapies don't exist, scientific curiosity and non-traditional research can inspire new approaches and hope. The Power of Lived Experience — Practitioner-patients like Dr. Driscoll bridge gaps between science, clinical care, and compassion through firsthand understanding.Hope Through Education — Educating both patients and practitioners fosters progress—there's always hope, even if answers come step by step.Episode Timestamps04:15 – Post-COVID Dysautonomia Insights 07:12 – Invisible Illnesses and Tech Misguidance 13:07 – Central Sensitization and Unexplained Symptoms 16:44 – Nicotine Patch Stimulates Vagus Nerve 20:01 – Navigating Illness and Predatory Healthcare 20:51 – Navigating Autonomic Dysfunction Treatments 26:03 – Bridging Medical Knowledge Gaps 29:38 – Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Insights 31:25 – Inflammation's Impact on Heart and Vision 36:07 – Chronic Illness: The Domino Effect 41:18 – Questioning Symptom-Driven Treatments 44:22 – Unseen Illness: Recognition Grows 45:26 – Advancements in Autonomic Dysfunction Treatments 49:06 – Championing Long Covid ResearchDISCLAMER >>>>>> The Ditch Lab Coat podcast serves solely for general informational purposes and does not serve as a substitute for professional medical services such as medicine or nursing. In this episode of the RWS Clinician's Corner, Margaret sits down with Ashok Gupta for a deep dive into the brain's pivotal role in chronic illness—exploring how conditions like Long Covid, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, mold toxicity, and persistent inflammation can often be rooted in neural and nervous system dysregulation. They discuss the distinction between hardware (the body) and software (the brain and nervous system), the science and process of limbic retraining, and practical ways clinicians can integrate these approaches into their practices. In this interview, we discuss: -Brain retraining vs. meditation/stress reduction -The concept of creating and rewiring neural pathways -Acute vs. chronic illness: transition due to overactive protective responses -The role of genetic predispositions (e.g., detox ability, immune differences) -The three “R”s of brain retraining: regulate, retrain, re-engage -Practical considerations for implementation, maintenance, and long-term success -Strategies for integrating these techniques/the Gupta program in clinical practice The Clinician's Corner is brought to you by Restorative Wellness Solutions. If you're struggling with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) or debilitating tiredness that just won't go away, you're not alone—and you're not imagining things. Millions of people suffer from persistent fatigue that conventional medicine often fails to resolve. Fatigue and stress can make everyday tasks like working at a computer feel overwhelming, as seen in this image, which represents the experience of many with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) At the Hedberg Institute, I'm always researching botanical compounds that support microcirculation, mitochondrial health, and immune regulation—all vital in restoring energy. That's why I formulated VascuSelect, a synergistic supplement that contains three powerful plant extracts: Ginkgo biloba, grape seed extract, and mango whole fruit powder. Let's dive into why Ginkgo biloba, in particular, stands out for those dealing with ME/CFS and how it works alongside other ingredients in VascuSelect to support your energy and vitality. An Important Study: Ginkgo Biloba for ME/CFS A recent paper published in Frontiers in Pharmacology (2022) titled “A Botanical Product Containing Cistanche and Ginkgo Extracts Potentially Improves Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms in Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, and Placebo-Controlled Study” sheds important light on Ginkgo's role in combating chronic fatigue. In this gold-standard clinical trial, 101 adults with ME/CFS received a botanical supplement combining Ginkgo biloba extract (120 mg/day) and Cistanche tubulosa extract (300 mg/day) or a placebo for 60 days. The results were impressive: Significant reductions in fatigue severity Improved physical performance and VO₂ max Enhanced antioxidant status and reduced oxidative stress markers Improved sleep quality and concentration Enhanced quality of life (QOL) and sexual life (SLQ) scores Decreased blood levels of lactic acid and ammonia (both fatigue biomarkers) What's particularly exciting is that Ginkgo biloba played a central role in this formulation. The authors noted that Ginkgo's flavonoids and terpenoids contribute to neuroprotection, vasodilation, and mitochondrial support, all of which are key areas of dysfunction in ME/CFS patients. This study confirms that Ginkgo biloba, known for enhancing blood flow and antioxidant activity, can play a central role in reducing the burdens of ME/CFS. How Ginkgo Biloba Helps Fight Fatigue Ginkgo biloba (standardized to 24% flavonol glycosides and 6% terpenes) is one of the most studied botanical extracts for circulatory and cognitive health. But its applications go far beyond brain support—especially for those with energy-depleting illnesses like ME/CFS. Ginkgo biloba is one of the oldest and most studied medicinal plants. It's been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but modern science is now validating its applications for conditions like ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, and Long COVID. 1. Improves Microcirculation Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow, especially in the small vessels of the brain and extremities. This is critical in ME/CFS, where impaired oxygen delivery to tissues can worsen fatigue. 2. Supports Mitochondrial Function Many people with ME/CFS experience dysfunctional mitochondria—the energy-producing engines of cells. Ginkgo has been shown to protect mitochondrial membranes and improve ATP production, helping the body generate more usable energy. 3. Reduces Oxidative Stress Oxidative stress is a hallmark of ME/CFS and contributes to inflammation, brain fog, and fatigue. Ginkgo's rich flavonoid profile helps neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative damage. In the study mentioned above, participants taking Ginkgo and Cistanche showed significant increases in antioxidant enzymes like SOD and CAT. 4. Enhances Neurotransmitter Function Ginkgo biloba modulates neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine—chemicals that regulate mood,

What if your body already knows how to heal itself, and your brain just needs to get out of the way? After 27 years of debilitating chronic illness—including lupus, chemical sensitivities, and chronic fatigue syndrome—wellness coach Lori Clemmons discovered the transformative power of neuroplasticity when conventional treatments failed her.In this enlightening conversation, Lori reveals how she went from being homebound and sometimes bedridden to hiking, jogging, and living vibrantly by retraining her brain. The key? Calming her overactive limbic system—the part of the brain constantly scanning for threats—through mindful practices like forest bathing, meditation, and positive thought redirection. As she explains, when we shift from constant fight-or-flight mode to a state of relaxation, our bodies produce healing neurotransmitters instead of stress hormones, giving us the energy needed for recovery. For anyone struggling with chronic conditions, sleep issues, or the natural changes of aging, this episode offers compassionate, practical guidance for making peace with your body. Lori's "compassionate self-coaching" approach teaches how to take small, sustainable steps toward healing rather than overwhelming yourself with massive changes. Dear Stef,I need your help. I've been a long time listener and sought out therapy as soon as I turned 18. Between then and now I have made very limited progress chipping away at my armor and processing my childhood. I'm panicking at how long its taking when I want to cross the desert, meet a virtuous woman and maketh the babies.I think biggest hurdle is that I'm quite split between my emotional and intellectual. I'm really strong on the intellectual side, identifying patterns, reasoning through healthy behavior, and making theoretical connections with my past. I've learned this alone doesn't work. With me, it doesn't touch my beliefs or really change how I feel or even open a door for me to explore or interact with that realm. I feel hopelessly broken. To be more fair, I have occasionally made connections between these two worlds but only briefly a handful of times in therapy. That's not enough. I still have many dysfunctional behaviors from my near death experience called childhood. I had no bond, was not parenting and was constantly in danger of violence from my middle brother and abandonment from my sadistic mother.I'm baffled that I can logically understand how bad I had it but still lag behind so much with my emotions and lack of empathy for myself. Typically in your call-in, once people understand, they connect. I am so fucking frustrated. No matter what I've tried with two therapists and journaling, I'm not touching it.I am not without emotions, I can feel them strongly. I do try to suppress them until their intensity overpowers the suppression.Talking about suppressing, I've been experiencing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome(self diagnosed) for the past 10 years. I've been to alternative, normal and specialist doctors and ruled out all kinds of illnesses, infections and deficiencies. I'm left with a "*shrug*, we don't know what's wrong with you". I have a working hypothesis that it's mental with physiological effects. I both overuse my fight-or-flight and ignore/suppress the feedback of my body. I just keep pushing through and at some point, my body has burnt out and has trouble repairing muscle damage. You are supposed to repair when you are safe!On another note, fair warning, my mom fights with fog. Prior to writing this, I have tried to overthink this conversation you and I'll have. I kept looping in those conversations because my inner mom would lose to inner Stef. She tried fighting tooth and nail to get by with "I don't know" and 'I don't remember". When she couldn't outwit or play dumb/passive or manipulate, I felt unspeakable danger will occur, like I'd die. Contrary, I think this is when SHE dies and I can be free to be vulnerable. In my experience, most of my past is a grand canyon chasm of fog so thick you can cut a slice of it and serve it as meringue. Only a few plateaus (memories) peek out with little sense of depth. On the same note, in a therapy setting, when I try to bring awareness to what I'm feeling, I get nothing, like going to a play with a white curtain in front of the performance the whole time. The cast is doing something behind there and no matter what, the curtains never part. There's quite a trail of blood leading to my mother in the my present day disfunctions: Whipping myself verbally, rounding down my accomplishments, believing I'm worthless and feeling unsafe in social situations to the point where its easier to avoid most interactions, and fear of dating due to risk of abandonment. My ACE score is 6 or 7 of 10. Not sure on the whether the one about parent being assaulted counts. There was no drug use, prison, or sexual abuse (not counting early exposure to pornography through unfettered internet access). My mother is a malignant narcissist, father a workaholic, middle brother is really fucked up, oldest brother seems kinda okay but sides with my mother. I've been torturing myself for the past 3 weeks straight trying to ask for your help. I've been strongly avoiding and fearing it and yet strongly intent to make it happen. Something tells me that I did a good job providing enough info in this email alone to for you to help me get unstuck.GET MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING', THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI, AND THE FULL AUDIOBOOK!https://peacefulparenting.com/Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!Subscribers get 12 HOURS on the "Truth About the French Revolution," multiple interactive multi-lingual philosophy AIs trained on thousands of hours of my material - as well as AIs for Real-Time Relationships, Bitcoin, Peaceful Parenting, and Call-In Shows! You also receive private livestreams, HUNDREDS of exclusive premium shows, early release podcasts, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2025
Kathleen Berry's journey into the paranormal began with a single night at Nevada's Goldfield Hotel. Once skeptical and struggling with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, she joined a TV news crew as an impartial observer—only to encounter eerie phenomena that challenged her beliefs. A psychic declared her "third eye" awakened, forcing her to reconcile these experiences with her evangelical faith. Today on the Grave Talks, a conversation with Kathleen Berry about her book, A "Reluctant Spirit: A True Tale of God, Ghosts and a Skeptical Christian" and how one night changed her life.
