A 19-year-old drove three hours to sit at our table and lit the room on fire—in the best way. Meet Caroline Joyous: musician, TPUSA ambassador, and relentless voice who found her calling when churches closed and her mom's salon went dark. She walks us through how a quiet teenager became a public advocate, why she ties pro-life conviction to civic duty, and how she handles daily hate without losing heart. We dig into what Turning Point USA actually does—voter registration, local races, church mobilization, and outreach that targets Gen Z where they live. Caroline shares personal memories of Charlie Kirk's encouragement and the one word he gave her that stuck: relentless. From there, we tackle the flashpoint everyone's still arguing about: Super Bowl halftime. We compare the NFL spectacle with TPUSA's alternative featuring Kid Rock and Gabby Barrett, unpack the family standards debate, and ask why institutions keep ignoring their core audience. It's a wider conversation about culture, unity, and building alternatives when the mainstream won't budge. For a change of pace, we vent about small-but-real etiquette fails—movie theater whisperers and biohazard bathrooms—before flipping the mic. Caroline asks for songwriting advice, and we get practical: write from truth, not for approval; let lived moments anchor your lyric; move people before you try to move charts. The through line is courage with kindness—show up, speak clearly, and keep going when it gets loud.If you're ready for faith, free speech, and a Gen Z perspective with backbone, press play. Then tell us your take on the halftime controversy, the best way to reach young voters, and the songwriting rule you live by. Subscribe, leave a rating, share with a friend, and drop your comments—we'll read them and keep the conversation going.______________________________________________________________________________________________SPONSORS: The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces!Redefining Coworking - Exceptional Office Space for Every BusinessBook a tour today at espaces.comFrom the Patriot Mobile studios:Don't get fooled by other cellular providers pretending to share your values or have the same coverage. We have seen the example of Jeremiah and how his prayer life saw him through the sorrow of God's wrath. Now, we turn to Job and see how his prayer life made him famous for his enduring faith. "Behold, we count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful."James 5:11Job was a successful man; he was a wonderful father, but overall, he was a pious man. This is evidenced by his reaction to losing everything."And it came about, when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, 'Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually."Job 1:5"Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD." 22 Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God."Job 1:20-22"Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!" 10 But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?" "In all this Job did not sin with his lips."Job 2:9-10After being overwhelmed by the tedious attacks on his integrity, Job declared he would strut in like a prince to God Almighty and demand an answer; he was about to face his Almighty Creator. Our So what?Job's prayer life gave him endurance and comfort beyond our apprehension. Treasured ones of God, pray, pray, pray through all God's work in your life; therein is the abundant life promised, knowing Him.Next time, we will learn the one lesson Job needed to learn to bring his life to an abundance of joy.Brethren, let's pray for one another."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Brad Stulberg is a bestselling author, executive coach, and one of my favorite thinkers on sustainable high performance. This conversation explores the dualities in personal development, discipline and self-compassion, striving and surrender, intensity and joy. We discuss the "humble badass" archetype, building resilient identities, why curiosity is the skeleton key, and excellence as an antidote to alienation. Along the way, Brad gets vulnerable about the childhood wounds that still drive his ambition—and I share my own. Amidst the chaos of self-help, Brad remains a principled voice of reason. Enjoy! In early January every year in Galveston, Texas, we hold the Keep On Tookin'! conference. You remember the slogan "Keep On Truckin'!"?, from the Robert Crumb cartoon? And you remember "Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery"? Well, once we've taken the Twelve Steps, our job is to "keep on tookin!'". We have main speakers, panels with attendee participation, and, this year, Father Tom W from Oakland, California (AA and Al-Anon). There is also a Q and A session as the last of the weekend. As the recordings are available, I will upload them here as a 'guest spot' on the podcast. If you hear this as it's hot off the press, there's still time to Zoom in and listen, live, from wherever you are in the world.More information can be found here: https://first164.blogspot.com/p/keep-on-tookin.html

In this episode of the Mental Healness Podcast, Lee Hammock interviews Dr. Sharon Niv, a cognitive psychologist and co-founder of Joyous PBC, about the transformative potential of low-dose ketamine therapy. They discuss the differences between psycholytic and psychedelic states, the therapeutic benefits of ketamine for anxiety and depression, and the importance of creating a safe space for emotional exploration. Dr. Niv emphasizes the need for accessibility in mental health care and the potential for ketamine to help individuals break through emotional barriers and achieve greater self-awareness and resilience.Sharon Niv, Ph.D. is a cognitive psychologist exploring how contemplative and therapeutic methods can reshape mental wellness. Today's episode is one I've really been looking forward to because we're diving into something that's transforming the way we think about mental health treatment: low-dose ketamine therapy. My guest, Dr. Sharon Niv, is the co-founder of Joyous, a public benefit company helping make this kind of care more accessible and affordable than ever before. Sharon brings a fascinating background in cognitive psychology, meditation, and technology, and she's helping bridge the gap between neuroscience and therapy in a way that's incredibly gentle, safe, and empowering for both clients and clinicians. We'll talk about what makes psycholytic, or low-dose, ketamine different from traditional psychedelic experiences, how it can enhance the therapeutic process, and how you, as a therapist, can get trained to integrate it into your own work. This is one of those conversations that opens your mind to what's possible in therapy, so let's jump in. Blind Hog and Acorn attended not one but TWO No Kings protests. It was amazing and so refreshing to see so many smiling, happy people. First in the local small town with an attendance of 78, then to a much larger rally in Springfield. Downpours were taken in stride as the rain was most welcomed and it literally and figuratively did not dampen the mood.Farm chores for winter begun. Acorn will be "out of service" from Thanksgiving to Christmas as she will be getting a new left hip. Much to get prepared so Blind Hog can coast through- might be a few weeks before Acorn can get up to the barns.

Leonora Carrington was a prodigious artist closely associated with major surrealists of the 1930s. Though only sporadically in print until recently, her writing has helped cement her cult status, not least The Hearing Trumpet (1974). Before her family consign her to an old-age facility, nonagenarian Marian Leatherby is gifted a hearing trumpet with almost magical capabilities. Her institutionalisation leads to much eavesdropping, a Grail quest, descent into the underworld and an apocalyptic ice age. Joyous, disturbing and subversive, The Hearing Trumpet is full of themes and images that populate Carrington's artwork and other writing. Both Marina and Chloe knew Leonora Carrington, and in this episode they reflect on the ways her personality inflected her work.
