The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

Sharon is the co-founder of Joyous PBC, an AI-powered platform focused on making mental health treatment affordable and accessible. A cognitive psychologist, she has led the development of patient programs and created Joyous for Therapists, a collaboration tool designed to support clinicians. Her work centers on the psycholytic ketamine approach for trauma treatment — a low-risk method with negligible psychiatric or medical emergency rates. Because low-dose ketamine produces partial dissociation, clients stay oriented while gaining enough psychological distance to work directly with trauma targets. It requires far less training than psychedelic therapy and has shown strong effectiveness for trauma care.In This EpisodeJoyous PBCSharon on IGsharonniv.substack.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-trauma-therapist--5739761/support.---Thank you for listening! If you want to support the show, I've got three options and every bit helps.$5.00 PayPalhttps://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/NPKS32G8KVSN2$10.00 PayPalhttps://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/495AMDFXQFC3L$15.00 PayPalhttps://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/M7V5RREUKVD8JThank you to our Sponsors: Jane App - use code GUY1MO at https://jane.app (https://jane.app/book_a_demo)Novo Psych - novopsych.com/traumapodcast

Main Text: Matthew 21:1-17Jesus approaches His final hour by parading towards Jerusalem with His followers in the midst of explosive reactions by the large crowd chanting “Hosanna to the Son of David” (Matthew 21:9-11).The chapter started with a prophetic act to acclimate His disciples (verses 1-3). He foreknows where the donkeys are and the fact that the owners would lend them. The disciples participated in obedience to the prophetic action in verse 4, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9.The owners complied and the disciples obeyed because … ”The Lord needs them (verse 3).” The prophetic spectacle unfolds before a very large crowd who showed them adulation by “spreading their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them along the road while they cried out words of acknowledgment and worship, identifying Jesus, the miracle worker, as the Messiah, the Blessed Son of David (verses 8-11).The whole city was affected with both exuberance and interest (verses 10-11). After all of this triumphant procession, they arrive at the court of the gentiles in the outer court of the holy temple. Here, Jesus in contrast, Jesus uses some violence to demonstrate His rebuke. What turned His celebrating disposition to one of vivid displeasure (verse 13).The temple became a demonstration of false holiness that was hallow when it comes to those in need of God's help: The people, especially those considered “unclean” in the Old Testament law.Verses 12 – 17His uncharacteristic violent behavior of Jesus (gentle Shepard) verse 12.His message verse 13.The religious establishment were making the house built for prayer and spiritual benefit to a den of robbers (the focus on Commerce and “overcharging” (dishonest money changers?), etc.Not only greedy dishonest commerce but leaving out of their ministry considerations, those considered “unclean” in the Old Testament (“blind, lame, 2 Samuel 5:8; those with physical abnormality (Leviticus 21:7-12) and even children, Matthew 18:1-5, Matthew 21:14-16(.The house of prayer statement in Jesus' rebuke covers more than just praying but also ministering to those spiritually and physically disenfranchised from religious society (21:14-16). Remember when Jesus healed on the Sabbath (the law) Jesus was rebuked by some in the religious leadership; So, the temple was abused by secular minded leadership priesthood, etc. (read Mark 2:23-28).This false holiness was evidenced in some, if not more of the religious leadership: especially the Priests and Scribes. When the chief priests and teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did (for the lame, blind, diseased and poor persons and even the children) … “They became angry” (verse 15). And in contrast the children, not the religious hierarchy, recognized, along with the crowd and His disciples (verses 8-11): They exclaiming “Hosanna in the Highest”; what a radical change! This triumphal entry picture illustrates clearly that even religion given by God on Mt. Sinai can develop wrong priorities: The focus on using religion, even Christianity, for primarily commerce, power, and status. They developed a false idea of holiness without compassion and buildings and related practices without the presence of God, who is love.Even in the Old Testament, this is expounded in Isaiah 58 – What is true fasting (read it).2 Timothy 3:5, producing even Christians that only have a form or an appearance of holiness/godliness but resisting or denying its power to change them. Have nothing to do with them! (unless they repent, Galatians 6:1-2).Finally materialistic commerce focused political and religious priorities are the characteristics of the religious, political economic practices of the Antichrist system, to be destroyed by the Parousia of Jesus: described in Revelation 17, 18, & 19.This is what Matthew's version of Jesus triumphal entry in Matthew 21:1-17 illustrates: Joy, victory transformed by commercially oriented religious people who are then rebuked by Jesus. (See also the church of Laodicea in 3:14-21. But in His rebuked, there is always hope for restoration.AMEN

This week we attended the most incredible party thrown for @onthescentmedia byGlorious Brands and Muse Communications - a room filled with friends: movers andshakers of the scent scene, from press, PR and brands alike. All were there tocelebrate the official launch of On The Scent Magazine - and somehow, with all theirlove and support - it suddenly felt real! The magazine was arrayed on tables around the gorgeously flower-bedecked room,Mimosa cocktails were sipped, fragrant friends laughed and we all basked in themost spectacular view of London, delighting in the golden hour (and a rareopportunity to come together across various companies who are usually the onesholding launches, not getting to relax and attend them!) It was just JOYOUS, andwe are so grateful to everyone who helped organise it, and who came together insuch scented harmony.Ahhhh! When you think of the violin, or in country and roots music circles its kissing cousin the fiddle, what comes to mind? The Suzuki method, or Antonio Vivaldi perhaps? Maybe a song like “Ashokan Farewell” or “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”? But have you heard of Stuff Smith, Regina Carter, Papa John Creach, or Stéphane Grappelli? Charlotte artist Emanuel Wynter certainly has, and having grown up learning the Suzuki method, he would go on to take inspiration from violinists in a variety of genres to interpret his own love for blues, rock, soul and jazz. The result is a fresh take on the instrument in an electric and eclectic setting that also showcases his band's lock-tight grooves and his own clear and confident vocals. I spoke with Emanuel Wynter in his hometown of Charlotte about how he plays violin in a variety of music settings, from his own style over to session work and a praise band, and how his early love of blues and rock music translates to the instrument, which is far more versatile and expressive than you might expect. We touch on the three boxes that he needs to check before taking on a gig, and what he wants to get across with his lyrics as well. From vintage tube amps, double stops and a love for astronomy, architecture, and spontaneity, our conversation covers a lot of ground, and along the way, we feature a number of songs from Emanuel Wynter's live album From Orbit. “Giving brings happiness in every state of its expression.  We experience joy in forming the intention to be generous; we experience joy in the actual act of giving something; and we experience joy in remembering the fact that we have given.”This week, I'm reading 3 quotes from the Buddha.Reflection question:How might your follow-up conversations change if you viewed them as helping donors complete their joy cycle rather than simply maintaining relationships throughout the campaign?Reflection on quotes:Today is our final episode in our series on authentic giving and avoiding transactional approaches. We've discussed the difference between transactions and authentic giving, donors demanding transactional approaches, and the roots of loneliness and guilt in transactional donations.  Finally, when we give authentic giving opportunities, the donor experiences joy throughout the generosity cycle during a capital campaign.  The writers from centuries ago understood things about human nature—about giving, receiving, and gratitude—that we're just now proving with brain scans and research studies. There's something beautiful about discovering that ancient wisdom and modern science keep arriving at the same truths. As a reminder, you can go back to the series on neuroscience and giving to hear about the science.  These quotes show something we often forget during capital campaigns —giving isn't a burden we place on people. It's a gift we offer them.Think about your own experience. Remember the last time you gave something meaningful? That warm feeling you got? That was your brain releasing actual joy chemicals. The quote reveals this beautiful truth: we experience joy when we decide to give, joy when we actually give, and joy when we remember giving. Triple joy.But here's where we make an authentic gift feel like a transaction for donors. We work so hard to capture that first moment—getting someone to say yes—then we disappear and start talking to the next donor. We forget about joy number three. We abandon our donors before they can fully experience what they've done. When we follow up, when we share about the campaign and construction progress and the donor's impact on that progress, when we help donors remember their generosity—we're not just being polite. We're completing their joy cycle.  Start celebrating it throughout the campaign. This work has entered the public domain. What do you think? From the bestselling author of The Best Kind of Beautiful, Frances Whiting, comes an endearing, wise and witty novel of love and friendship, which asks, how far would you go, to protect the people you love?   In the summer of 1997, five high school students meet. Nina, the Good Girl. Beatrice, The Poetess. Harriet, the Ghost. Cosmo, the Professor. And Hunter, the Golden Boy. In their last year of school, they become inseparable, five sides of the same star, until a fault line cracks between them, scattering them to all corners of the globe.   Now, fifteen years later, Hunter has called them with his conch shell lips to return to the place where they lived and laughed and cried together, before secrets were whispered, and promises were broken. No-one knows why he has assembled them, but there is no question they will go. Because to outsiders, they might be, in turns, a little bit weird, a little bit glamorous, and a little bit dangerous. But to each other, they are, and always will be, The Nocturnals.   From bestselling author Frances Whiting comes an irresistible, witty, darkly delightful and utterly endearing novel of friendship - and the lengths we will go to protect those who we love.   ‘Joyous, deep, funny and so bloody gripping. Hooked me, heart and soul. Whiting's words are so full of life. Aching, puzzling, heartbreaking, magnificent life.' Trent Dalton, bestselling author of Gravity Let Me Go

Lisa Marceau founder and CEO of Joyous and Alpha Millennial Health, tells us more. This is Technology Now, a weekly show from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Listen today to God's response to Job's challenge, demanding an answer. We will hear God asking Job these questions three:Where were you when I created the universe? Job 38How do I sustain the universe? Job 39If you cannot contend with my creation, how will you contend with me? Job 41Job's humility.:"Then Job answered the LORD, and said, 2 "I know that Thou canst do all things, And that no purpose of Thine can be thwarted. 3 'Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' "Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know." 4 'Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask Thee, and do Thou instruct me.' 5 "I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees Thee; 6 Therefore I retract, And I repent in dust and ashes."Job 42:1-6Job did not storm in like a prince, and his being humbled in the presence of Almighty God reminds us, as God's treasured people, why our Savior began His ministry with these words:"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.5 "Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."Matthew 5:3-9Brethren, let's pray for one another."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." A 19-year-old drove three hours to sit at our table and lit the room on fire—in the best way. Meet Caroline Joyous: musician, TPUSA ambassador, and relentless voice who found her calling when churches closed and her mom's salon went dark. She walks us through how a quiet teenager became a public advocate, why she ties pro-life conviction to civic duty, and how she handles daily hate without losing heart. We dig into what Turning Point USA actually does—voter registration, local races, church mobilization, and outreach that targets Gen Z where they live. Caroline shares personal memories of Charlie Kirk's encouragement and the one word he gave her that stuck: relentless. From there, we tackle the flashpoint everyone's still arguing about: Super Bowl halftime. We compare the NFL spectacle with TPUSA's alternative featuring Kid Rock and Gabby Barrett, unpack the family standards debate, and ask why institutions keep ignoring their core audience. It's a wider conversation about culture, unity, and building alternatives when the mainstream won't budge. For a change of pace, we vent about small-but-real etiquette fails—movie theater whisperers and biohazard bathrooms—before flipping the mic. Caroline asks for songwriting advice, and we get practical: write from truth, not for approval; let lived moments anchor your lyric; move people before you try to move charts. The through line is courage with kindness—show up, speak clearly, and keep going when it gets loud.If you're ready for faith, free speech, and a Gen Z perspective with backbone, press play. Then tell us your take on the halftime controversy, the best way to reach young voters, and the songwriting rule you live by. Subscribe, leave a rating, share with a friend, and drop your comments—we'll read them and keep the conversation going.______________________________________________________________________________________________SPONSORS: The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces!Redefining Coworking - Exceptional Office Space for Every BusinessBook a tour today at espaces.comFrom the Patriot Mobile studios:Don't get fooled by other cellular providers pretending to share your values or have the same coverage. We have seen the example of Jeremiah and how his prayer life saw him through the sorrow of God's wrath. Now, we turn to Job and see how his prayer life made him famous for his enduring faith. "Behold, we count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord's dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful."James 5:11Job was a successful man; he was a wonderful father, but overall, he was a pious man. This is evidenced by his reaction to losing everything."And it came about, when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, 'Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually."Job 1:5"Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD." 22 Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God."Job 1:20-22"Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!" 10 But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?" "In all this Job did not sin with his lips."Job 2:9-10After being overwhelmed by the tedious attacks on his integrity, Job declared he would strut in like a prince to God Almighty and demand an answer; he was about to face his Almighty Creator. Our So what?Job's prayer life gave him endurance and comfort beyond our apprehension. Treasured ones of God, pray, pray, pray through all God's work in your life; therein is the abundant life promised, knowing Him.Next time, we will learn the one lesson Job needed to learn to bring his life to an abundance of joy.Brethren, let's pray for one another."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." In this episode of the Mental Healness Podcast, Lee Hammock interviews Dr. Sharon Niv, a cognitive psychologist and co-founder of Joyous PBC, about the transformative potential of low-dose ketamine therapy. They discuss the differences between psycholytic and psychedelic states, the therapeutic benefits of ketamine for anxiety and depression, and the importance of creating a safe space for emotional exploration. Dr. Niv emphasizes the need for accessibility in mental health care and the potential for ketamine to help individuals break through emotional barriers and achieve greater self-awareness and resilience.Sharon Niv, Ph.D. is a cognitive psychologist exploring how contemplative and therapeutic methods can reshape mental wellness. Her work spans mindfulness, cognitive science, and the psychology of consciousness, with a special focus on how altered or expanded states of mind can promote emotional growth and resilience. In 2022, Sharon co-founded Joyous PBC, a public benefit company dedicated to making mental health care more affordable and accessible through low-dose, or psycholytic, approaches to ketamine treatment. At Joyous, she leads clinical research, designs digital therapeutics optimized for the psycholytic state, and developed Joyous for Therapists—a free training and collaboration program helping clinicians integrate these methods safely into their practice.Sharon is passionate about bringing new insight to the conversation on mental health: how lighter-touch, more personalized approaches to psychoactive medicine can unlock self-understanding, compassion, and long-term healing.
