In Albania, olive oil is called “ilac”, medicine. It's included as a daily ritual for generations--a source of nourishment, healing, and tradition. For many of us, in other regions of the world, we have less familiarity with olive oil. And then we see labels on olive oil bottles that say "cold-pressed", "extra virgin", and "organic". What do these terms mean? And how can we find the best quality olive oil wherever we are? Bianti Danaj, an Albanian-American entrepreneur and founder of Donika Olive Oil, today brings clarity amidst the confusion. He goes over the meaning of the wording on labels. He describes the nuances that affect the quality of olive oil, including its exposure to heat, light and oxygen. He also goes over what the polyphenols in olive oil do for our explaining brain and gut health, our overall wellbeing and longevity. In sum, he makes a strong case for including olive oil as a part of our health journey, wherever in the world we may live. Happy Satiated Saturday! I have one published article in a journal titled, The Enteric Nervous System and Body Psychotherapy: Cultivating a Relationship with the Gut Brain.I have a fascination and curiosity about the gut. The gut contains about 100 trillion bacteria that contribute to your mood, mental health, immune system, cravings, and nervous system. Some studies have found that there are some missing microbes in the guts of people who are struggling with binge eating, which provides another example of how binge eating is not your fault but a response to what is happening inside your body. About 95% of serotonin is made in your gut, making it a part of your experience of joy and happiness. You can imagine that if your gut bacteria are out of balance, you may feel inexplicably sad, leading you to reach for food to feel better. In this week's episode, I chat with Martha Carlin, microbiome researcher, founder of The BioCollective, and speaker about: The importance of understanding the microbiomeThe connection between Parkinson's and gut healthThe impact of food and stress on the gut and mental healthWhere gut research may be heading with probiotics, fecal transplants, and nutrition You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/understanding-your-gut-and-its-role-in-your-mood-and-cravingsWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Martha:Website: https://www.thebiocollective.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-biocollective/BiotiQuest: https://biotiquest.com/products/sugar-shiftSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Loneliness is now considered as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, with studies linking social isolation to a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and even early death. We explore why strong relationships are one of the most powerful predictors of long-term health—and how small, meaningful connections can make a difference. We also dive into the risks of ultra-processed foods, from their impact on toddlers' development to their surprising link to eyesight issues. With 61% of a UK toddler's diet now coming from UPFs, experts are raising the alarm about potential speech delays and oral development concerns. Plus, new research suggests ultra-processed foods may damage retinal blood vessels, increasing the risk of vision problems like age-related macular degeneration. In this week's wellness trend, we unpack the viral tongue scraping craze—does it actually improve bad breath and oral health, or is it just another wellness fad? And in our listener question, we break down why sugar cravings happen and how to manage them without feeling deprived. “Our gut is referred to as the second brain, for a reason; it plays a massive role in regulating our emotions and energy." - Sherry ShabanHave you ever wondered why stress, emotions, and even past experiences can impact your digestion and overall health? In this episode, I talk about how our gut and brain are closely connected. Our emotions and thoughts are tied to how our body feels and how it digests food. Understanding how stress and emotions affect our bodies can help us see why our metabolism and gut health play a big role in losing weight and feeling well.I also explain how hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin make us feel happy and balanced and how they are influenced by both our mind and gut health. Instead of just focusing on food, I share how everything around us impacts our well-being.Throughout the episode, I offer simple tips to help you be kinder to yourself and build a better relationship with food. Whether you're struggling with weight or emotional eating, this conversation can help you find a healthier, happier path forward!‘Topics Covered:The Gut-Brain Connection and Its Impact on EmotionsThe Impact of Negative Self-Talk on Body and MindThe Body's Response to Stress and Sugar StorageUnderstanding the Gut-Brain Connection and Food ScarcityIdentifying and Overcoming Out-of-Control Eating BehaviorsUnderstanding Dopamine and Serotonin in the Brain's Reward SystemThe Pursuit of Oxytocin and the Role of DopamineEmbracing Transformation Through Support and Self-ReflectionMastering Stress Response Through Re-Education and Re-SensitizationExploring Food Sensitivities and Personalized Nutrition ApproachesIf you've ever felt like food has power over you, I hope this conversation brings you comfort and inspiration. You're not alone, and healing is possible. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right—eating well, exercising, pushing yourself—but your body just won't let go of fat, there's a reason.Your nervous system is either in Protection Mode (fight-or-flight) or Safety Mode (rest-and-digest)—and fat release only happens in Safety Mode. But if your body feels unsafe? It clings to fat, slows metabolism, and even triggers binge eating and self-sabotage.Think about it. You go through stress, and suddenly you're reaching for food you swore you wouldn't touch. You're not weak—it's biology. When your body is in survival mode, it's wired to conserve energy and seek quick fuel. That's why unwanted eating behaviors feel so out of control sometimes. But here's the kicker: fat loss isn't just about burning calories—it's about making your body feel safe enough to let go.So the real question is—are you pushing your body into Protection Mode without even realizing it? Because if you are, no amount of dieting or exercise is going to override survival mode. It's time to stop fighting your body and start working with it.Join my 3-Day Stop The Cycle Masterclass on April 7-9, 2025.Register Here: https://www.sherryshaban.com/stopthecycleYou deserve to experience food freedom, I can't wait to see you inside!Download FREE E-Book: https://www.sherryshaban.com/calm-the-cravingsBook a Food Freedom Strategy Call with me www.calendly.com/sherryshaban/makepeacewithfoodJoin my Facebook CommunitySubscribe to the podcast so you never miss an episode! The connection between mental health and metabolic health is far deeper than once believed, with growing evidence showing a powerful, bidirectional relationship. Inflammation, poor diet, and gut dysfunction are now recognized as key drivers of both physical and psychological illness—often hiding in plain sight. By addressing root causes such as blood sugar imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and microbiome disruption, many chronic mental health conditions can improve or even resolve. This emerging science challenges the traditional separation of mind and body, pointing instead to an integrated approach where healing the body becomes essential for healing the brain. Recognizing this link is crucial in shifting the future of mental health care. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Chris Palmer and Dr. Shebani Sethi, why our diet is so closely related to the state of our mental health. Dr. Chris Palmer is a psychiatrist and researcher working at the interface of metabolism and mental health. He is the Director of the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. For over 25 years, he has held leadership roles in psychiatric education, conducted research, and worked with people who have treatment-resistant mental illnesses. He has been pioneering the use of the medical ketogenic diet in the treatment of psychiatric disorders - conducting research in this area, treating patients, writing, and speaking around the world on this topic. More broadly, he is interested in the roles of metabolism and metabolic interventions on brain health. Dr. Shebani Sethi is a double board-certified physician in Obesity Medicine and Psychiatry. She is the Founding Director of Stanford University's Metabolic Psychiatry program and Silicon Valley Metabolic Psychiatry, a new center in the San Francisco Bay Area focused on optimizing brain health by integrating low carb nutrition, comprehensive psychiatric care, and treatment of obesity with associated metabolic disease.
