As Jesus calls His first disciples in John's Gospel, we see ourselves in the story and remember His call to each one of us. He is seeking us even as we seek Him. HE SEES US just as He sees Nathanial. He distills and transforms our identity, even changing our names like Simon. He is the one who does all the work in this brief cascade of disciples. All Andrew and Phillip do is invite others to “come and see” Jesus for themselves. John 1:35-51
We commence a study of John's Gospel by surveying the other 3 - Mark, Matthew and Luke, known as the Synoptic ("seen together") Gospels due to the closeness of their narratives. While the Synoptics have much in common with each other, they also each have a distinct voice, style, and message. John is clearly writing after they've all been completed and is making sure - as an eyewitness - that nothing vital has been left out of the record of Jesus' mission and call. While John will be a great storyteller, he begins his gospel as a poet theologian in order to creatively impress Jesus' divinity and power upon us from the outset. God is beginning a new work in Jesus, and he can begin a new one in us!
You know, the Lord makes some surprising statements in His Word. Sometimes, you just have to stop and think about them. For example, John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." But there are two amazing truths in this one verse - that God SO loved the world and that God actually GAVE His only Son. What a statement!

The resurrection did not catch Jesus off guard. Matter of fact, He told everyone over and over again that He will rise again. This Easter, we will take a ride through the Gospel of John as we see how Jesus PROMISED the resurrection, PROVED the resurrection, and then He PERSONALIZED the resurrection. In John 3, we will look at a rather unique conversation that Jesus had with one of the highest ranking Israelites at that time. For Nicodemus, the discussion was so shocking it was hard to understand. For Jesus, it is the greatest promise ever offered. The most popular verse in the Bible: John 3:16. The pitfall of looking at a verse that is so popular is that we can easily shut down with the idea that "we already know that". In this message we take a closer look at this famous verse and the verses that come after it, looking for fresh insights into what God is saying through them. The main them is that God loves. We will never really understand the fullness and significance of God's love this side of heaven, but we will work at gaining a better understanding of his love in this message. We will also see that God's love for us moved Him to action, an action that forever changes the lives of men and women throughout the world. We will also see that God's love requires a choice from us. So, listen in to be both encouraged and challenged.

The second sermon in our 2018 Advent series on John 3:16. This week we turn from the word perishing, to the word Love. Love is the reason for the season of Christmas. But who's love? And who is this love shown too? Listen as we unpack this much loved verse.

So many scriptures are engraved in our minds. The words are there, but have we really “tasted” the messages? John 3:16 and 17 are two of those passages. We see them referenced at sports events on signs held by the audience. Do we see what it means that God loves the world, that He sent… The post FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD appeared first on Riverside Church.
John 3.16 - 21 For God So Loved The World by Jerad File
This message explores the depths of God’s love for us, as well as how we can best express His love to a broken world.
John 3:16-21 1. This is what God did, v. 16 “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person-though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die-but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, though whom we have now received reconciliation.” -Romans 5:6-11 2. This is what God didn’t do, v. 17 3. This is what we can now do, v. 18 Notice two things about this verse... a) unbelievers do not have a positive or a neutral standing before God b) this rules out the belief that a sincere person following any religion can have eternal life with God. 4. This is why some people don’t do it, v. 19-21
