Today's Bible study covers Leviticus 24 and four distinct elements that are all tied together within the Holiness Code. Verses 1-4 we will talk about the continuous call for the priests to tend to the oil of the lampstand found within the tabernacle. Verses 5-9 discuss the weekly call to supply the show bread (bread of the presence). Both the lampstand and the show bread have application and fulfillment in Christ (which we discuss). In verses 10-23, we see a narrative about a man who blasphemes the Lord and receives swift justice. This leads to a discussion on Lex Talionis (the law of retaliation), also known as “eye for an eye,” as well as a thorough discussion on what blasphemy is and why it deserved the death penalty. Lots to talk about as we dig deep into Leviticus chapter 24.Outline: 03:02 - Leviticus 24.1-4 - Continues Lamp Oil.We learn about the tabernacle lampstand in Exodus 25.31-40. The lampstand had a purpose in its day, it was the only source of light within the Holy Place of the tabernacle. It illuminated the work inside the tabernacle. This is also representative of Christ as our only source of divine eternal light. John 8.12, Jesus says, “‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have light of life.” John 1.4-5, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” Heaven will be illuminated by the Glory of the Lord, Rev 21.23, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Additional Symbolism found in the lampstand: 2 Cor 5.21, Heb 7.26, Isa 53.4, Rev 1.20, Jhn 8.12, 9.5, 1.4-9, Rev 21.23. 09:09 - Leviticus 24.5-9 - Show bread also known as the “bread of the presence.” The show bread had a purpose in Moses day. It was a perpetual acknowledgement that all bread/food comes from the Lord. It was a thank-offering to the Lord. God is the provider of all. The 12 loaves represent the 12 tribes of Israel, continually offering their gratitude and dependence on God for daily provision. The show bread has fulfilment in Christ. Jesus is the bread of life, John 6.35, Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Additionally (you can dig deep into this yourself) Jhn 3.16, 1 Pet 2.22, Heb 7.25, Rom 8.34, Eph 5.2, 1 Pet 2.9, 1 Cor 11.23-25.13:39 - Leviticus 24.10-23 - Blasphemy and justice17:05 - What is Lex Talionis? What is Eye for an Eye?Lex Talionis is latin. “lex” = law and talio = “like for like”The law of retaliation and the law of retributionBible verses covered on this in the study: Ex 21.23-25, Deut 19.15-21, Mat 5.38-48, Mat 5.17, Rom 13.1-4.Lex Taolionis - eye for an eye - was never meant for personal relationships. This is where we must apply Jesus' statement of turning the other cheek.30:48 - Leviticus 24.10-16, 23 - BlasphemyWhat is Blasphemy? Blasphemy is any deliberate, irreverent, or contemptuous speech or action against: God (father, son, or spirit), His character, His name, His worksWhat is Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? A willful, knowing, persistent rejection of the Holy Spirit's testimony about Jesus. Considered unforgivable because the person has hardened their heart against the only means of salvation. The Holy Spirit resides in us as believers: John 14.16–17, Ephesians 1.13–14, 2 Corinthians 1.21–22, Ephesians 4.30.Key Bible Verses on Blasphemy covered in this talk: Exo 20.7, Exo 22.28, Lev 24.16, 1 Kings 21.1-14, Job 2.9-10, Luke 5.21, John 10.30-39, Psa 82:6, Mark 14.60-64, John 19.6-7 and Rev 13:5–6.Support Iron Sheep Ministries: https://Ironsheep.org/donateListen to the podcast: https://anchor.fm/ironsheepContact Dave & the ISM team: info@ironsheep.orgJoin the email list: http://eepurl.com/g-2zAD

How Can You Have Joy In A Troubled World?Grace Christian FellowshipJohn 16:16-33Introduction:Today we will continue and hopefully finish John 16 from where Darien left offlast week. If you recall, we are nearing the end of what we call the farewelldiscourse. It is a long section of Scripture taking place in the upper room withJesus and his disciples just prior to his arrest, mock trial, conviction, and eventualcrucifixion. It is in these last moments that Jesus pours into his disciples his finalthoughts, his final instructions for what is to come.I loved the way Darien framed this last week as he talked about a coach who hadtrained his team, but all of the sudden before the big game he was gone. In fact Iremember in 2017 when Alabama was playing Clemson for the NationalChampionship game and Nick Saban fired the offensive coordinator just daysbefore the game because of distractions around Lane's newly acquired job atFlorida Atlantic. Here was Lane who was the play caller and the mastermindbehind the offense and in the biggest game of their lives he was gone. Alabamawould go on to lose that game. To a much greater degree this must be how thedisciple feel as Jesus tells them he is going away and that he is going to be killed. But Jesus is so full of compassion in these verses. He has every right to be focusedon his own task. After all he is the one who is about to go through this agonizingdeath, but his focus is on his disciples. He doesn't want them to worry. He wantsthem to have greater faith. He wants them to have true joy that is bigger than theircircumstances. So let's pick up in verse 16 as we answer the question, How canyou have joy in a trouble world. In verses 16-21 I want us to see that (I) the sorrow is temporary216 "A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and youwill see me."All through the Bible we get the concept of messianic timing. It was the Godordained time in which things were to occur. We see Jesus say things like “mytime has not yet come”. Jesus is trying to communicate to the disciples that thetime is near for his death. It is but “a little while away”.I think it is difficult for us to really put ourselves in the place of the disciplesometimes. These were just common men. Fishermen or tax collectors or whateverthey were. And all they have known to this point is to follow Jesus. They justfollowed him. Tried to learn from him. They had no idea what is would be likewhen he was gone.In fact even that they haven't really accepted. Their minds our clouded bypreconceptions of Judiasm. They don't always follow what Jesus is teaching. Andthey probably deep down hope that Jesus is going to establish some sort of earthlyrule that will provide them some security. We will see this in the garden whenPeter is ready to wage war to prevent Jesus from being taken. But Jesus also says “in a little while” you will see me (again). Jesus want's hisdisciples to realize that the sorrow is only temporary. One of the things that mywife, Brooke, always says is I can do anything as long as I know there is an end insight. Right, we just need some assurance that the difficult thing won't lastforever. We need hope.[Jhn 16:17 ESV] 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this thathe says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, andyou will see me'; and, 'because I am going to the Father'?"Now stop right here do you see something in verse 17 that was not in verse 16. Wenow have this phrase “because I am going to the father”.3You see there is some debate around what the little while is. Is Jesus talking abouthe is going to die, but the he is going to be resurrected in 3 days? Is that the littlewhile? Or is he talking about something else. I think the key to understanding is inthat phrase that we get from the disciples “because I am going to the father”. Lookback at verse 6.[Jhn 16:7 ESV] 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I goaway, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I willsend him to you.So I believe the “little while and you will see me” is referring to the coming of theHoly Spirit. That is the context of this entire chapter, the coming of what Paulcalls in Romans as “the Spirit of Christ”. So because I go away to the Father “nothis death, but his ascension”, the Holy Spirit will come like we see in Acts 2 atPentecost. Which really fits with the rest of the entire chapter.Jesus wants them to know that the sorrow they will have is only temporary18 So they were saying, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We do not knowwhat he is talking about." 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said tothem, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A littlewhile and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me'?Now I'm right on the line of being Gen X and Millennial, and sometimes when Ithink back to my childhood I realize just how different we were built. I neverforget on teacher I had in shop class. Much of it was not about shop by the way.Have you ever heard that there is no such thing as a dumb question? Well hedidn't subscribe to that. I'll never forget one day in class this guy in the back ofthe room raised his hand and asked a question. I don't remember what the questionwas but it must have been a dumb one, because what I do remember is how thatshop teacher responded. He said real calmly, little man, did you know peoplemight think you're a dummy, but they don't really know for sure. But the moment4you open your mouth and ask a question like that, everybody knows you're adummy.Proverbs 17:28: "Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when hecloses his lips, he is deemed intelligent".Now our disciple didn't have Mr. McCreless but maybe they did read Proverbsbecause nobody wants to ask the question. But Jesus is determined to show themthe temporary nature of their sorrow so he gives them an illustration.[Jhn 16:20 ESV] 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but theworld will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.Jesus knows that these disciples are headed for sorrow. The road will not be easy. But ultimately they will have joy. And you as a believer has this very samepromise.[Rom 5:2-5 ESV] 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into thisgrace in which we stand, and we rejoice (definition find deep and abiding joy) inhope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God'slove has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been givento us.God is not allowing us to go through difficult seasons for no reason. He issovereign and in control of all things. And while we may not know His exactpurpose we can be assured that He is doing something in and through our trials. Our sorrow is temporary but our joy is everlasting. Jesus further explains it thisway.5[Jhn 16:21 ESV] 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because herhour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers theanguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.Jesus compares the suffering and the joy to a woman who is giving birth. Now, Ican tell you I have several children and I am somewhat of an expert you could sayin observing this phenomenon. I can tell you that the process appears from myvantage point to be very, very difficult. But I will never forget the moment whenthe first time in my life I heard the doctor say, I can see her head. It was as if inthat moment for the first time I really understood that I was about to be a Dad. Iwas completely and totally responsible for another human being. I was filled withan overwhelming amount of joy. And I remember when they handed my daughterto my wife and she held her and she just smiled and cried these tears of joy. Asgreat as the pain and the suffering was, it was in that moment completely gone andit was replaced with joy. And that joy of being a parent never goes away. Surethere are difficult times, but it is lasting. That brings me to my second point, (II)True Joy is Eternal[Jhn 16:22 ESV] 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, andyour hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. This reunioun with Christ or the Spirit of Christ creates in us a joy that cannot betaken from us by anyone. Now this Jesus points to 2 characteristics of this Joy. There is joy in having directaccess to God in Prayer.[Jhn 16:23-24 ESV] 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I sayto you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Untilnow you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joymay be full.6I will admit that I got hung up a little bit here. What does Jesus mean ask nothingof me? Is he saying don't pray to Jesus? No, that's not it at all. You have to thinkabout this in the context of the disciples. Up until this point in their lives all theyhave known about following Jesus has been to follow him. And if they were inneed they would ask him. Jesus would talk to the Father for them, and then thingswould happen. In fact all of John 17 is going to be exactly that, Jesus praying onbehalf of the disciples to the Father. So Jesus now because I am going away, things are going to be different, you nowhave direct access to the Father. And he gives a promise, ask it in my name andyou will receive it. And then we get a “so that”. Why does the Father answer theseprayers? So that your “JOY” may be made full! Now, what does it mean to pray in Jesus name?First of all, it is our identity. We recognize and declare that we are in Christ. Butmore importantly is aligns our motives. That is to say that if I pray for somethingin the name of Jesus I am saying, Father I am asking this because I believe it is thething that Jesus would also pray. Not out of selfishness or ambition, but I trulybelieve it is a desire of Christ for this thing to happen. So not only is access to God in prayer a characteristic of joy, but also true SpiritualDiscernment. (25)[Jhn 16:25 ESV] 25 "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The houris coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell youplainly about the Father.I think one of the most profound parts of Scripture is in comparing the disciplesthat are presented in the gospels. Often they appear confused, without direction, they don't understand, they have no vision of the Kingdom. They are beingrepremanded for being out of line. But then Acts 2 happens. And all of the sudden, these disciples are presented in a completely different light.Teaching with authority. Some are writing Scripture in connection with the Holy7Spirit. Preaching deep theological Kingdom truths. All of this after Jesus hasascended!Remember what Darien said last week in John 16:13[Jhn 16:12-13 ESV] 12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bearthem now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. Not only is the Holy Spirit called the Spirit of Christ as we saw in Romans, but heis called by John in this chapter as the “Spirit of Truth”. And knowing the truth isa great source of our Joy.So why does the Father want to answer our prayers, and why does he want us toknow the truth through discernment? Because he loves us. Verse 27.[Jhn 16:27 ESV] 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved meand have believed that I came from God.If you want to please the Father, or better yet if you want to be loved by theFather, then he asks us to love His Son. How do you do you love the Son?[Jhn 14:15 ESV] 15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.I want to be careful here, because I believe that you are saved by grace throughfaith. Not of works lest any man should boast. There is no amount of good deedsthat can get you to heaven or earn one ounce of favor with God. But I do want tomake a connection between faith and obedience in light of John 14:15.[2Co 13:5 ESV] 5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Testyourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is inyou?--unless indeed you fail to meet the test!8How do you know if you love Christ? How do you know if you are in the Faith? What is the test. If you love Christ, you will desire to know his Word, and you willdesire to keep his commandments. You will not do it perfectly, you will fail, justas I fail, but in you will be a desire to love God and to love people. There will be adesire to flee from Sin. And when you fall into sin you will be broken untorepentance. You are not saved by obedience, but obedience is an outpouring of alife that is in Christ. Some of you this morning may not know if you belong to Christ. Scripture calls usto examine ourselves. It doesn't ever say did you pray a prayer. Did you gothrough confirmation, were you baptized? None of that. It always lands right here,is your life bearing the fruit of the Spirit. And if it isn't then you have cause forgreat concern. If this is you then scripture is clear, believe on Jesus Christ today, and repent and place your faith in him.[Jhn 16:28-30 ESV] 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, andnow I am leaving the world and going to the Father." 29 His disciples said, "Ah,now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we knowthat you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why webelieve that you came from God."In these verses we can see ourselves. We see the first elements of faith in that theyhave an intellectual understanding of what Jesus is saying, but their faith is veryweak. Just like us.We can read the truth of God, we can write in our journal. We can even pray aboutsome Scripture that we have read and think. That's awesome God thank you forshowing my that truth. It can be a delightful experience to have with the Lord, andI don't want to take away from that. BUT, when do you really understand apassage like this?[Jhn 15:19 ESV] 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as itsown; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.9It's not really when you read it. On a deeper level you understand it when youexperience it. When do you really understand a passage like “Even though I walkthrough the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me”.It's not when you read it, when you understand it, it's really when you live it.I think Jesus' tone in verse 31, is dripping with irony.[Jhn 16:31 ESV] 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? In fact if I were paraphrasing this verse into modern language it might gosomething like, “oh do you now?”. They do understand to a degree, but the trialsthat lie ahead of them are about to take this small faith and grow it into somethingthat is unshakable.Peter who not long after this very moment will go on to deny Jesus 3 times. I don'tknow that man, I never heard of him. Who will hear the rooster crow and realizethat he has failed in his own power. The failed Peter who Jesus would return toand ask the question, Peter do you love me? Peter do you love me? Peter do youlove me? I can almost here Jesus say after all that? Now Peter, now do you believeme? And Peter would have said, Oh Lord, now because I have gone through all ofthis, now I really believe! It is that Peter, not failed Peter, but tested Peter, the redeemed Peter who goes onto write this:[1Pe 1:6-7 ESV] 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of yourfaith--more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire--may befound to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. The test is coming vs 32.10[Jhn 16:32 ESV] 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when youwill be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am notalone, for the Father is with me.They will fail. It doesn't mean they aren't believers. The test is for a purpose, tostrengthen, to grow. Why am I telling you all this, Jesus says?[Jhn 16:33 ESV] 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may havepeace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome theworld."Listen Church, Jesus doesn't just speak these words to the disciples in the upperroom. I believe he has in mind, all of you, and me. And any disciple that would becalled to him. To believe in Jesus is to be at odds with the world. And there is apromise here that in this world. In this evil system that you find yourself a part of.you will have tribulation. You will have trouble. You will have sorrow.Jesus says take heart, I have overcome the world. This is the victory. Only Jesuscan say this. Only he has the power. If I say cheer up, buck up, hang it there it ismeaningless, because I don't have the power to do anything. Not the case withJesus. The creator, God himself, says, I know your trouble, but rest in me, becauseI am the One that holds it all. We have nothing to worry about because of that. Lord's Supper Invitationo Are you going through a trial? Pray this morning that God would growyour faith.o Maybe this morning you know another believer who is going thoughtrials and God is showing you an opportunity to encourage them andsupport them in the midst of it.o Maybe this morning you have examined yourself and you haveconcerns that your faith is not real.

Delivered by Mitchell Lever 20th July 2025. God created humanity with various desires and needs to be met through our relationship with him. The world offers alternatives in God's absence. Alcohol is one example. It is important that we understand what alcohol is, how the bible views it's consumption, and God's promise to completely meet our needs (Jhn 6:35). In doing this, we uphold God's testimony as 'the light of the world, a city set on a hill', we remain 'in the world but not of the world', and we are able to give an answer 'to every man that asks a reason of the hope' that is in us (Mat 5:14, Pet 3:15, 1Per 2:9). Breakfast on the Beach ...Oh Peter | Restored & Sent This week's sermon closes out our journey through the Gospel of John with a look at one of the most meaningful conversations in the New Testament. After publicly denying Jesus three times, Peter is met not with condemnation, but restoration. Jesus meets him on the shore, invites him into honest reflection, and reaffirms his calling. Key Insights: 1. No failure is final when surrendered to Jesus. 2. Jesus restores us publicly to use us powerfully. 3. Real restoration starts with honest self-evaluation. 4. Jesus calls us back by asking for our love, not perfection. 5. Our past failures, when redeemed, become tools for ministry. Scripture Reference: John 21 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.21.NIV) This message is a powerful reminder that no failure is final in the hands of Jesus. Whether you're coming off a season of drifting, doubt, or denial, Jesus still invites you to follow Him again. Breakfast on the Beach: Finding Our Way Back | Restored and Sent In this message from John 21, we witness Jesus appear to His disciples on the shores of Galilee after His resurrection. Rather than rebuking them for going back to fishing, He prepares them breakfast—a powerful invitation to return, be restored, and walk forward in faith. This sermon explores how spiritual failure often pushes us back to old habits, but Jesus lovingly calls us to trust Him again. If you're feeling distant, discouraged, or spiritually stuck, this message offers hope and direction. Key Insights: 1. Spiritual failure isn't the end—Jesus meets us in it. 2. Obedience matters more than intention. 3. Life lived in your own strength leads to fruitless effort. 4. Jesus doesn't just restore; He re-commissions. 5. When God speaks, your best move is to jump. Jesus Changes Everything | Restored & Sent After the resurrection, Jesus didn't wait for the disciples to figure things out — He met them in the middle of their fear, behind locked doors, and changed everything. In John 20:19–23, we see the risen Jesus offer four things we all desperately need: His presence, His peace, His power, and His purpose. Because of His victory over the grave, we don't have to rely on our own strength to navigate life's fears and uncertainties. Jesus steps into our lives, breathes new life into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, and calls us to live boldly for Him. Key Insights: • Jesus meets us in our fear — not after we've fixed it • The peace Jesus gives is deeper than circumstances • Jesus offers what no one else can: peace, power, and purpose • Every believer is called and empowered to be sent • The resurrection isn't the end of the story — it's the beginning of new life Key Scripture: John 20 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.20.NIV) This message invites us to open every closed-off place in our lives and trust Jesus to fill them with His freedom. His peace quiets our fears. His Spirit empowers us to live fully. His purpose gives meaning to every step we take. Wherever you are, Jesus is ready to meet you — and change everything. Held in the Gardener's Hands | Power and Promise | John 15:1-8 Walking through the rich Holy Land context of John 15, this message unpacks Jesus' intimate teaching to His disciples after the Last Supper as they crossed the Kidron Valley toward the Mount of Olives. Using the familiar metaphor of vineyards, Jesus reveals Himself as the true vine and God as the gardener who tends to believers in two essential ways. Key Insights: • Jesus HOLDS Every Branch in His Hands - Understanding your secure position in Christ and how God lifts up fallen branches to reconnect them to the source of life. • Jesus APPLIES the Shears with Love - Why pruning isn't punishment but preparation for greater fruitfulness in your life. • Jesus NOURISHES Our Connection - The vital importance of abiding in Christ and how this relationship sustains us. • Jesus DEVELOPS lasting FRUIT - How genuine spiritual fruit comes only through connection to the vine. • Jesus STAYS through Every Season - Finding comfort in being chosen and kept by the Gardener who never gives up on you. Key Scripture: John 15 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.15.NIV) Whether you're questioning your faith journey, struggling with spiritual growth, or seeking to understand God's purpose in difficult seasons, this message reminds us that "the gardener isn't looking to get rid of you. "The Way, The Truth, and The Life" – Power and Promise In this message, Pastor Matt explores Jesus' declaration in John 14:6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Set during Jesus' final moments with His disciples before His crucifixion, this sermon reveals how Jesus used Jewish wedding customs to illustrate His relationship with believers. Just as a Jewish bridegroom would prepare a place for his bride and return for her, Jesus promises to prepare heavenly dwellings for His followers and come back for them. Key Insights: * Jesus doesn't just show us a path—He IS the destination * Christianity isn't about religious performance but about "knowing, growing, and walking closer with Jesus, our eternal Savior" * From our first breath of faith to our final earthly moment, our relationship with Christ should be growing more intimate * Jesus patiently addresses His disciples' confusion and questions, showing us how He meets us in our uncertainty Key Scripture: John 14 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.14.NIV) This message concludes with an invitation for believers who haven't yet been baptized to take this first step of obedience in their Christian walk. As Jesus tells His troubled disciples: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." Whether you're new to faith or have been following Jesus for years, this message will deepen your understanding of what it truly means to follow Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. "The Resurrection and Life" | Power and Promise In this message, we explore one of Jesus' most profound "I AM" statements through the dramatic story of Lazarus being raised from the dead. When Mary and Martha sent word that "the one you love is sick," Jesus made a surprising decision - He stayed where He was for two more days. This intentional delay reveals an important truth: God's timing, though often mysterious to us, always serves His greater purpose. As Jesus told His disciples, "For your sake, I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe." Key Insights: • Jesus' Emotional Response: When Jesus saw Mary weeping, he wasn't just sad - he was deeply moved and angry at death. • When Jesus asked to remove the stone, Martha reminded him that Lazarus had been dead four days and "stinketh" (KJV). This wasn't just death - it was decay, making the miracle even more extraordinary. • With just three words - "Lazarus, come out!" - Jesus demonstrated His authority over death itself. This message speaks directly to anyone who has questioned God's timing, felt abandoned in suffering, or faced the reality of death. You'll discover that Jesus doesn't just offer resurrection as a future hope - He IS the resurrection and life right now, transforming our disappointment, suffering, and grief into opportunities to truly believe. "The Good Shepherd" - Power and Promise Series Journey into John 10 as we explore Jesus's powerful declaration "I AM the Good Shepherd." This message reveals three transformative truths about our relationship with the ultimate Shepherd: • He Dies for His Sheep - Jesus didn't just give up a temporary existence; He laid down His entire being (suah) - every emotion, every part of His soul, His complete essence for our salvation. • He Loves His Sheep - This isn't distant, theological knowledge but intimate, personal relationship (ginosko). He knows each sheep individually, at their worst, yet gives His best. • He Unites His Sheep - Breaking down every cultural, ethnic, and social barrier, creating one unified flock under His perfect leadership. Key Scripture: John 10:11-16 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.10.NIV) Learn why Jesus isn't just another hired hand who runs when wolves approach, but the one true Shepherd who stays faithful through life's toughest moments. By this point many of the other people in the barber shop are frozen, some are crying. o Got up out of that chair, broken by his own obstinance to the direction of the Holy Spirit, he said Julie I want to 1 apologize to you for not telling you about Jesus, but you stay right here because I'm going to get a bible study out of my car and I'm going to help you know all about Jesus. o Oh how many times do we try to decide where the Spirit gets to move and where the Spirit does not get to move ▪ That person doesn't look like me ▪ That person is annoying ▪ He's dirty, he's on drugs, she is a lowlife sinner ▪ I'm an introvert. I'm just shy. I don't even know that person. ▪ I don't talk about religion at work, or school, or at the gym. Transition to Key Verse (John 3:8) o First talk about the hermeneutical principle of context (Contextual Interpretation). Why is this story here? o We have been looking the last few weeks at John 3, and the story of Nicodemus. o And today we have this abrupt shift where Jesus leaves Judea for an entirely new setting. So it is important to ask ourselves why is this passage placed here. o I think I know why. In fact, I want to give overwhelm you with reasons this morning so that hopefully you would agree with me. o Do you remember back in school when you would have a reading assignment, and you would get back to class and the teacher would say. Now that you all have read the book, I want you to write a paper where you compare and contrast a key character in the story? o I think that is exactly why John places this story of Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well, next to the passage of Nicodemus. He (under inspiration of the HS) 2 wants us to see the similarities, but he also wants us to see the differences. And I really believe that both of these stories tie back to a key verse in John 3 and verse 8. ▪ [Jhn 3:8 ESV] 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." • The wind is abstract, you can't see it • The wind is random or unpredictable • That is the way it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit • We don't know where the Spirit is going to move. Baber shop, work, school, on an afternoon walk. • But many of us, if we are honest try to play assistant Holy Spirit all the time. o So we have both of these stories, and I content that both of them are linked to this passage. Where Jesus is showing us exactly how unexpected movements of the Spirit, Salvation, can be. The Comparison What do both of these stories have in common? ▪ They are beside each other in the Gospel of John (John 3 & John 4) ▪ Both are personal extended conversations with Jesus. ▪ Both conversations are about the nature of salvation. ▪ In both cases Jesus is well aware of who he is talking to. Even aware of personal details. ▪ Both Nicodemus and the woman start off by misunderstanding Jesus in an overly literal way. 3 4 ▪ Both conversations deal with the Holy Spirit The Contrast ▪ I believe these stories are meant to be compared ▪ I'm the 1,000,000th person also to make this comparison. Nicodemus, John 3 Woman at the Well, John 4 Nicodemus is a man, we know his name, he is prominent member of society well respected and powerful. She is a woman. We don't know her name and she is an outcast from society. She had no social status and is without any power. He is a devout Jew. Even the teacher of the Jews. He is a member of the ruling council (the Sanhedrin). She is an immoral Samaritan. She is from a culture of misfits. Kings 17:24. Because of this influence from the Assyrians The region and its people were polluted with false idols religions, and as such were looked down on by Jewish people. He would have been viewed as righteous by his peers. She would have been viewed as unrighteous and scorned by her peers. He was educated. She was uneducated. Discussion is a night Discussion is in the day. Walks away confused, and is slow to come to Faith. His community remains unbelievers. Walks away with understanding, is quick to receive faith and her community is significantly impacted. Jesus doesn't explicitly reveal the fullness of his identity. Jesus for the first time reveals himself as God the son incarnate. You expect the Spirit to move in the direction of Nicodemus The W@tW is the last place you expect the Spirit to move. 5 In your mind right now as we learn more about this Samaritan woman, I want you to be thinking back to Julie the hairdresser. You see the woman at the well was a picture of desperation. She was broken and wanted nothing more in her life than to have peace. [Luk 5:30-32 ESV] 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" 31 And Jesus answered them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." I think when we read about the Pharisees there is (with me) a temptation to externalize them a little. To think wow those guys were horrible. But whenever you catch yourself doing that I want you to stop and ask yourself a question. In what ways am I just like that. Because I really believe there is a little Pharisee in each of us. [Jhn 4:1 ESV] 1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John • Pastor Darrien discussed this last week. JTB realized that he must decrease and Christ must increase. • John the Baptist is already in prison at this point. The Pharisees already suspicious of his growing popularity, and probably even have spies reporting on what Jesus is doing. • Talk about why Jesus was a threat to them, and why Jesus is a threat to the world today. 6 [Jhn 4:2 ESV] 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), • Jesus didn't baptize personally because of the division that might have caused. • People would have been tempted to think they were superior because they had been baptized by Jesus. See 1 Corinthians 1:12-15. • Talk here about Baptismal regeneration. Good proof text for knowing that baptism is not a requirement for salvation, but is done as a demonstration of salvation. [Jhn 4:3 ESV] 3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. • https://www.jesuswalk.com/john/maps/jerusalem-cana samaria-2148x3472x300.jpg • 70 mile walk • Talk about Messianic timing and his perfect connection with the Holy Spirit. • [Jhn 7:30 ESV] 30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. • JTB ministry had cleared the way for Jesus to go to Galilee. It was under Herod's jurisdiction and the last known spot where we have John's ministry before imprisonment. [Jhn 4:4 ESV] 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. • Look at map. • Because of the geographic location travelers were often making their way through this region. • However, the real reason is not geographic necessity it is because of a divine appointment. Talk about God's sovereignty is all aspects of our life. How the lady was just going for water, but the appointment for her was set before the foundation of the world. • Jesus took the most direct path available. In that day most Jews would have opted for the longer route across the Jordan river because they had such a disdain for the Samaritan people. The believed that they would be defiled just by being near the people. • Parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10) o Beaten, striped, thrown away for dead o Priest comes by, moved as far away as possible and kept walking o Levite does the same o Then we have Samaritan 7 • “had to” – verb John often uses to denote Jesus perfect obedience to the mission given to him by his Father. • Give an example of a person who is obedient, but we don't do it perfectly [Jhn 4:5 ESV] 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. • Sychar mountain village located on Mount Ebal. Recall back in the book of Joshua • [Jos 8:33-34 ESV] 33 And all Israel, sojourner as well as native born, with their elders and officers and their judges, stood on opposite sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel. 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law. • The Talmud explains that as the priest would say the positive of the curse they would all face toward Mount Garizim and for the negative of the they would face Mount Ebal. • What is the Samaria in your life? What group of location have you made off limits to the gospel. (work, school, home, friend group). • Religion had become about living in a bubble. If we are honest with ourselves we too create for ourselves bubbles that we fit in. And then we justify why those bubbles exist. [Jhn 4:6 ESV] 6 Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. • https://images.app.goo.gl/JTNTtkGQ7XYqQBdb9 • Modern site that is claimed to be Jacob's well. Location is pretty well established from tradition and writings. • Jacob -> Joseph shortly before he died (Gen 48) • 6th hour -> Noon. Jewish time starts counting at sunrise about 6 am. • Jesus has become weary. Gospel writers never tried to conceal Jesus' humanity or Jesus' divinity. We believe that Jesus is 100% man and 100% God. Bad math, but good theology. • Jesus humanity is required in order for him to be an appropriate sacrifice • [Heb 2:17 ESV] 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a 8 merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. [Jhn 4:7 ESV] 7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." • It is unusually that this woman would come to the well at noon. Customarily this practice (Gen 24:11) would be done in the evening. • Another unusual detail is the distance this woman would have walked from the village to get to this particular well. • We will find out later in the story why. She is an outcast from the outcasts. Likely someone who regularly receives shame and scorn from others. • In fact she would rather come to the well in the heat of the day, than to have to endure the shame that she would otherwise receive. • To the discouraged, realize that God's providence is in control, and he provides hope in the most mundane of things. Here is this woman just going to the well on any old day, and she is about to have the most life changing moment of her life. [Jhn 4:8 ESV] 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) • Jesus is not being exclusive or pretentious by sending his disciples. This was customary. Because Jesus was the Rabbi, it was normal for the students of the teacher to gather the food. [Jhn 4:9 ESV] 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?" (For Jews have no • Jews had transactions buy things, but could not share drinks food utensils. They were considered dirty. • How thirsty was this woman? o She wasn't seeking God o She was living in sin, running from God o She was seeking peace, guilt relief, but not God 9 dealings with Samaritans.) [Jhn 4:10 ESV] 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." • Jesus moves strait past her comment about the fued between the Samaritans and the Jews. He knows that this is a side bar and he gets right to the heart of the matter. • If you only knew who it is that asks you he says. o Can you imagine is she only knew? She sees a dirty, thirsty, tired traveler. o Jesus says if you only knew. If she only knew that the one who asks was: ▪ The word become flesh ▪ The one who hung the starts in the sky ▪ The one by whom all of creation came to be ▪ The one who was, the one is, and the one who is to come ▪ He is the I Am. As we close here, I want to ask the musicians and those serving the Lord's supper this morning to be making their way. I want to leave you with two thoughts. As you pray this morning and as you remember what Jesus did for you on the Cross. How is blood was spilled, how his body was broken. I ask you to search your heart of sin this morning. There's a couple of ways I want you to think about this sermon this morning. For some of you, I want you to think about where is Samaria for you. What is the place that you have marked off limits to God. If we are honest, we can admit that we have been trying to control which way the wind Where is the difficult place or the difficult thing that God is asking of you to go. This morning I want you to pray and take care of that. But I think there may be a second group of people here also. Because some of you may feel like you are not the Pharisees in the story, but maybe you feel like the Samaritan woman. You might say, this all sounds good Mikey, but I'm in a dirty dark spot. Down here where I am I just don't think Jesus is willing to come. I've done things, I've burned bridges, I've broken relationships and I'm like that Samaritan woman. I think Jesus this morning is sitting on the well, and he's waiting for you to walk up. And this morning he looks directly at you and says, I'm really thirsty would you mind getting me a drink? Don't walk away from him. Let's pray

This message reveals four critical insights about authentic faith: • Why intellectual understanding and religious status don't equal true salvation • The difference between seeking Jesus for answers versus seeking Him as Lord • Understanding spiritual transformation versus religious effort • How God's love transforms us from the inside out Key Scripture: John 3:1-15 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/JHN.3.NIV) This message challenges both seekers and long-time believers to examine their relationship with Jesus. Are we content with head knowledge, or are we allowing Jesus to transform our hearts? Through Nicodemus's story, discover why coming to Jesus requires more than curiosity - it demands surrender and openness to complete spiritual transformation. "Life Lessons From Flipping Tables" - Come and See Series What makes Jesus angry? Through the dramatic scene of Jesus clearing the temple courts, we uncover powerful truths about authentic worship and our relationship with God. This message from John 2:13-22 reveals four critical lessons: • Why nothing enrages Jesus more than irreverent, hypocritical worship • How Jesus responds when barriers stand between Him and His people • What it means to stand for truth, even when it costs everything • Understanding our role as living temples of God's presence Through the context of Passover and temple worship, discover how Jesus confronts systems that corrupt true worship and hinder people's connection with God. Learn what areas of your life might need "table flipping" and how to remove barriers between you and God. This message challenges us to examine our own worship: Is Jesus truly at the center, or have we allowed other things to take His place? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.Jhn 18:8  Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:Jhn 18:9  That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.Jhn 18:10  Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.Jhn 18:11  Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?Jhn 18:12  Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,Jhn 18:13  And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.

Jhn 17:14  I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Jhn 17:1  These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:Jhn 17:2  As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.Jhn 17:3  And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.Jhn 17:4  I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.Jhn 17:5  And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.Jhn 17:6  I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.Jhn 17:7  Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.Jhn 17:8  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.Jhn 17:9  I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.Jhn 17:10  And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.Jhn 17:11  And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.Jhn 17:12  While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.Jhn 17:13  And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.A Dios! This preaching is not to be bound up merely in words and dogmas. Rather it ought to be a living, breathing, vibrant expression of the Lord Christ. So much so that the world would testify that surely the Christ of Christ IS THE VERY WORD OF GOD MADE FLESH. Expositional style teaching utilizing John CH 20:28-29 to set the stage in showing that Jesus is Lord and God. This teaching will address the importance of the dual nature of Jesus Christ, and why the deity of Christ cannot be overlooked. We will show from the word of God, that worshipping another Jesus other than who He truly is, is a faith that is in vain. Furthermore, we will prove from the Scriptures the eternal state of Jesus, as well as why his manifestation in the flesh, made it possible for us to be redeemed.
