Text us your questions!Pope Francis, a man who inspired even many Protestants and non-Christians with his refreshingly prophetic voice, has died. The process to select his successor is ongoing as we release this. To help us understand what's happening, as well as its historical significance, we're talking with our friend and returning guest Shaun Blanchard, a Catholic theologian and theological historian. He helps us understand the significance of Francis's papacy and what might come next.As the first Latin American pope, first Jesuit pope, and first non-European pope since the 8th century, Francis broke numerous precedents while embodying what Shaun calls "the first truly post-Vatican II pope." While his predecessors were formed before Vatican II, Francis's entire priestly ministry took place afterward, fundamentally shaping his perspective on church reform. We explore how Francis's pastoral approach differed from Benedict XVI's more theological orientation and how his willingness to "make a mess" by reopening debates on issues like divorce, remarriage, and same-sex blessings represented a sea change in ecclesiastical culture. Francis challenged assumptions across the political and theological spectrum, championing environmental protection and migrant rights while maintaining core Catholic teachings. The conversation turns to the ongoing conclave, where approximately 80% of voting cardinals were appointed by Francis himself. Shaun offers insights into potential candidates including Pietro Parolin, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and several Asian cardinals, discussing how geopolitical realities might influence the selection process. We also discuss the film "Conclave" and its portrayal of Vatican politics, including how realistic or sensational it was (spoiler warning!).Whether you're Catholic, Protestant, or simply curious about global religious leadership, this conversation illuminates a crucial moment of transition for the world's largest Christian denomination and invites reflection on what spiritual leadership means in our complex global environment.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. In this episode of At Risk Radio, host Mark Stafford has a conversation with SOM International CEO David Witt and Randy Miller, Executive Pastor at Eagles View Church in North Fort Worth, to discuss powerful lessons from the Global Church and David and Randy's recent visit to Northwest Africa. Randy shares engaging stories from a transformative forty-three-hour car journey with David, illuminating the challenges and deep faith of church leaders in persecuted regions. The conversation highlights the Discussion Discipleship Method (DDM), a practical, easily multipliable approach to discipleship used worldwide, including in the local church back in Texas. Listeners will also hear about Randy's church's bold vision to give more than half its resources outside its own walls, the impact of servant leadership demonstrated through a memorable foot washing, and how global missions are shaping local ministry. Eagles View is committed to funding church planting and discipleship in other places in the world, and SOM International is one of its greatest partners in doing that. This episode is packed with inspiration and actionable insight for church leaders, missions-minded believers, and anyone passionate about Christian leadership, discipleship, and serving the Global Persecuted Church. Today, we're discussing the recent passing of Pope Francis. As a Protestant, I don't hold to Catholic doctrine, and I've had some serious theological issues with the papacy—but that doesn't mean I won't stop to reflect when someone steps into eternity. In this episode, I'm praying for Pope Francis' soul and hoping he had a deathbed conversion—because no one is beyond God's reach. I also hope Catholics choose a biblical pope next time, not one more interested in pleasing the world than honoring the Word. We'll talk about the things he did right—his care for the poor and moments of humility. But we'll also look at the dangerous things he got wrong:Promoting open borders that have devastated countries and erased traditionSaying all religions worship the same God (they don't)Claiming the human heart is good (the Bible says it's deceitful above all things)Ignoring original sin and the fallen nature of manThis is a respectful but honest take on a figure who meant a lot to many—but who, like all of us, needed Christ above all.--https://noblegoldinvestments.com/
In this sermon, Marcel Hall addresses the congregation on Easter Sunday, marking the conclusion of the series 'The Road to the Resurrection.' The message focuses on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, a pivotal event in Christian faith. Marcel emphasizes the significance of the resurrection as a historical event that affirmed Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God. He encourages the congregation to celebrate this monumental event and to commit or recommit their lives to Jesus. Marcel recounts the biblical narrative leading to and including the resurrection, and relates it to modern Christian faith, urging believers to reflect on their journey and respond to the good news with joy and commitment.00:00 Easter Greetings and Introductions00:27 Global Church and Local Services01:36 Significance of Easter and Resurrection03:13 The Road to the Resurrection Series04:46 Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection08:24 The First Easter Sunday11:57 Jesus Appears to His Disciples14:47 The Ascension and Joyful Worship17:30 The Joy of Resurrection17:50 Witnesses and Participants in God's Mission18:24 Personal Reflections on God's Power19:53 The Gift of Grace and Mercy21:07 The Call to Celebrate22:24 The Verdict of Salvation26:10 Commitment to Christ32:18 Practical Steps for Faith34:52 Closing Reflections on ResurrectionClick here to donate to the programClick here for more sermonsOC Church of Christ
Alex grew up loving and cherishing his local church family. As he grew in relationship to Christ, he sensed God was calling him to serve the global Church. In this episode, we discuss Alex's first steps serving his local church and then his first steps serving the Church around the world. With a summer in Birmingham serving at Oikos church and then a summer praying in new nations GEM is pursuing, we break down the lessons Alex learned. We then talk about the faith it requires to allow God's mission to be the focus of the church. “It is not so much the case that God has a mission for his church in the world, as that God has a church for his mission in the world. Mission was not made for the church; the church was made for mission – God's mission."― Christopher J.H. At the same time, these voices are largely absent from Western evangelical theology. In Why Evangelical Theology Needs the Global Church (Baker Group, 2024), Stephen Pardue seeks to bridge this divide by arguing, biblically and theologically, that it is imperative for Western evangelical theology to engage with the global church, and he provides examples of how this can be done. My guest today is Phil Moore, author of the book "The Forgotten Manifesto of Jesus." Phil is a former megachurch pastor in London who went through a major shift during the pandemic. See, Phil was leading this thriving church, doing all the things we're told to do to grow a big, successful congregation. But then COVID hit, and everything changed. Why? Because Phil started asking some hard questions - is what we're doing really working? Is this the way Jesus wants us to make disciples? What Phil discovered by connecting with disciple-making movements in places like Iran and India completely upended his approach. He realized the key to mature disciples of Jesus isn't about gathering big crowds, but about empowering everyday believers to make disciples who make disciples. It's a radically decentralized, reproducible model. As Phil will share, when we rediscover the simple, revolutionary teachings of Jesus in Matthew 10 and Luke 10, it has the power to transform not just our churches, but the very way we think about the Great Commission. This is a conversation that could be a real game-changer for how discipleship works in the body of Christ. So join us as we learn how to make disciples that make disciples. Phil is an author, speaker and teacher based in London, UK. Phil came to faith as a student at Cambridge University and was trained within the Newfrontiers family of churches. He serves as a teacher, speaker, DMM leader and encourager of churches, both in the UK and beyond. He is the author of "The Bible in 100 Pages", "The Forgotten Manifesto of Jesus" and the "Straight to the Heart" series of devotional commentaries. In his latest book, "The Forgotten Manifesto of Jesus", Phil has the privilege of telling the story of underground house church movements across India, Iran, Afghanistan and the Middle East. The leaders of these movements are skilled at hiding their identities, but they were able to communicate securely with Phil so that he could pass on their amazing story of God's faithfulness to the world.Phil is married to Ruth and they have four young children. Together, they love eating strange and exotic food, as well as anything to do with campervans. They also love Roald Dahl, which makes Phil's children complain that his own books do not contain enough pictures, talking animals or chocolate factories.Phil's Book:The Forgotten Manifesto of JesusPhil's Recommendation:Spirit WalkJoin Our Patreon for Early Access and More: PatreonConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@allnations.usGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. Parts of the global Church have a very different kind of challenge on their hands than we do in the West: how to handle explosive growth. In many parts of Africa, the Church is running out of room in their seminaries, convents, and monasteries because of rising vocations, and the laity are collectively practicing their faith in ways that put the Church in the West to shame. In Nigeria, upwards of 94 percent of Catholics go to Mass every week while the U.S. can't even reach 30 percent in weekly mass attendance among Catholics. What explains this wide discrepancy? What are we in the West getting so wrong about evangelization, and what is the Church in Africa getting so right? Earlier this summer, Hosts Michael Horton and Justin Holcomb spent two weeks in Egypt and Kenya with Theo Global, another project of Sola Media. This trip was part of Theo Global's annual efforts to gather leading theologians and biblical scholars from across the Middle East and then from East Africa to do theology together—so that the theological roots of the global church can grow strong. The first episode of this series was recorded onsite in Kenya, where Mike and Justin sat down with Adam Smith, a PCA minister and the Chief Operating Officer at Sola Media who has led the Theo Global project since it began in 2015. This is Theology by and for the Global Church.
