How can we  address the problem of violence against the poor? International Justice Mission exists to answer this question with protecting and rescuing victims, bringing criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts. In this episode, International Justice Mission's founder and CEO, Gary Haugen, joins Mark Labberton to reflect on almost three decades of IJM's fight against violence and slavery worldwide—and the spiritual formation that sustains it. Haugen shares the origins of IJM in response to systemic violence against the poor, the evolution from individual rescues to transforming justice systems, and the remarkable rise of survivor leaders transforming their own nations. Together they reflect on courage, joy, and faith amid immense risk—bearing witness to God's power to bring justice and healing through ordinary people. Episode Highlights “Protecting the poor from violence is God's weight, but it's our work, and we're gonna seek to do it Jesus's way.” ”In this era, I just think what the world is aching to see is the followers of Jesus who have a incandescent freedom from fear and a life-giving joy.” “Most of this violence will go away if government does just even a decent job of enforcing the law.” “Our first commitment is to help each other become more like Jesus—and from that strength, to do justice.” “The greatest miracle of IJM is not only the results—it's the freedom from fear and the joy with which they've done it.” “God saw them in their darkness, and they now testify to the goodness of an almighty God who loved them.” Helpful Links and Resources International Justice Mission – https://www.ijm.org Gary Haugen, The Locust Effect: Why the End of Poverty Requires the End of Violence – https://www.amazon.com/Locust-Effect-Poverty-Requires-Violence/dp/0199937877 Gary Haugen, Just Courage: God's Great Expedition for the Restless Christian – https://www.amazon.com/Just-Courage-Expedition-Restless-Christian-ebook/dp/B001PSEQR4 Riverside Church Sermon by Martin Luther King Jr., “Beyond Vietnam” — https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/beyond-vietnam William Lloyd Garrison biography – https://www.britannica.com/biography/William-Lloyd-Garrison Rwanda Genocide Investigation (UN Historical Overview) – https://www.un.org/en/preventgenocide/rwanda About Gary Haugen Gary Haugen is the founder and CEO of International Justice Mission (IJM), the world's largest international anti-slavery organization. Rev. Andrew Dickinson preaches on Acts 11:19-30, as we remember and celebrate the Global Church. God moves powerfully through His church in three specific ways: when the Gospel is preached without boundaries, when spiritual gifts are exercised, and when love is practiced genuinely. In Acts 11:19-30, we see this demonstrated as the early church expanded beyond Jerusalem to Antioch, where the Gospel first reached Gentiles. The church flourished as believers like Barnabas and Paul used their gifts to strengthen the new community. This growth culminated in practical love as the Antioch believers sent relief to fellow Christians in Judea during a famine. Today, we're called to participate in God's kingdom work by sharing the Gospel, using our unique gifts, and demonstrating authentic love both locally and globally.

For Christians in the West, the concept of “tribe”might be an alien concept. For much of the world, however, the tribe is a normal part of everyday life. The tribe is the community of shared values and history, where jobs and insurance are provided, and where members are protected. The Bible also speaks of tribes and the importance of reaching them with the Gospel.  But what about the Global Church? Could it be considered the Tribe of Christ? If so, how would that play out? What responsibilities would we have for one another? How would our own lives be different if we realized our extended families were actually tribes that needed to know Christ? To talk through this important yet largely untouched topic, Charles McAllister joins this episode of the Christian Emergency Podcast. Charles has served for many years as a Christian missionary in Jordan, where he had a front row seat to Arab tribal life. He recognized that many of thefeatures of tribal life mirrored ways Christians are called to live in community. Hospitality, history and identity were all hallmarks of the tribe. His insights are significant for Christian missions, as well as how we live out our lives in a hostile world.  If you find this episode helpful, please give us a positive rating and review wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Text us your questions!Pope Francis, a man who inspired even many Protestants and non-Christians with his refreshingly prophetic voice, has died. The process to select his successor is ongoing as we release this. To help us understand what's happening, as well as its historical significance, we're talking with our friend and returning guest Shaun Blanchard, a Catholic theologian and theological historian. He helps us understand the significance of Francis's papacy and what might come next.As the first Latin American pope, first Jesuit pope, and first non-European pope since the 8th century, Francis broke numerous precedents while embodying what Shaun calls "the first truly post-Vatican II pope." While his predecessors were formed before Vatican II, Francis's entire priestly ministry took place afterward, fundamentally shaping his perspective on church reform. We explore how Francis's pastoral approach differed from Benedict XVI's more theological orientation and how his willingness to "make a mess" by reopening debates on issues like divorce, remarriage, and same-sex blessings represented a sea change in ecclesiastical culture. Francis challenged assumptions across the political and theological spectrum, championing environmental protection and migrant rights while maintaining core Catholic teachings. The conversation turns to the ongoing conclave, where approximately 80% of voting cardinals were appointed by Francis himself. Shaun offers insights into potential candidates including Pietro Parolin, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and several Asian cardinals, discussing how geopolitical realities might influence the selection process. We also discuss the film "Conclave" and its portrayal of Vatican politics, including how realistic or sensational it was (spoiler warning!).Whether you're Catholic, Protestant, or simply curious about global religious leadership, this conversation illuminates a crucial moment of transition for the world's largest Christian denomination and invites reflection on what spiritual leadership means in our complex global environment.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. Traditional Worship | Bishop Bob Hayes | Have you ever asked yourself, “Why does the church exist?” Other than the obvious answer of transforming lives and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, what is a vibrant church called to be or do? Our mission statement of “Reaching People for Jesus Christ, Discipling Them in Faith, and Helping Those in Need” gives us a great start, but is there something more beyond our horizon that God is calling us to see or be engaged in? These are the questions we want to answer in this current capital campaign sermon series, Beyond. This is our moment to boldly pursue God's greater purpose for us, and in doing so, we might also discover how God is leading us to step out in faith. Welcome to Traditional worship. We're glad you're here.

In this episode of At Risk Radio, host Mark Stafford has a conversation with SOM International CEO David Witt and Randy Miller, Executive Pastor at Eagles View Church in North Fort Worth, to discuss powerful lessons from the Global Church and David and Randy's recent visit to Northwest Africa. Randy shares engaging stories from a transformative forty-three-hour car journey with David, illuminating the challenges and deep faith of church leaders in persecuted regions. The conversation highlights the Discussion Discipleship Method (DDM), a practical, easily multipliable approach to discipleship used worldwide, including in the local church back in Texas.  Listeners will also hear about Randy's church's bold vision to give more than half its resources outside its own walls, the impact of servant leadership demonstrated through a memorable foot washing, and how global missions are shaping local ministry. Eagles View is committed to funding church planting and discipleship in other places in the world, and SOM International is one of its greatest partners in doing that. Today, we're discussing the recent passing of Pope Francis. As a Protestant, I don't hold to Catholic doctrine, and I've had some serious theological issues with the papacy—but that doesn't mean I won't stop to reflect when someone steps into eternity. In this episode, I'm praying for Pope Francis' soul and hoping he had a deathbed conversion—because no one is beyond God's reach. I also hope Catholics choose a biblical pope next time, not one more interested in pleasing the world than honoring the Word. We'll talk about the things he did right—his care for the poor and moments of humility. But we'll also look at the dangerous things he got wrong:Promoting open borders that have devastated countries and erased traditionSaying all religions worship the same God (they don't)Claiming the human heart is good (the Bible says it's deceitful above all things)Ignoring original sin and the fallen nature of manThis is a respectful but honest take on a figure who meant a lot to many—but who, like all of us, needed Christ above all.--https://noblegoldinvestments.com/

Alex grew up loving and cherishing his local church family. As he grew in relationship to Christ, he sensed God was calling him to serve the global Church. In this episode, we discuss Alex's first steps serving his local church and then his first steps serving the Church around the world. With a summer in Birmingham serving at Oikos church and then a summer praying in new nations GEM is pursuing, we break down the lessons Alex learned. We then talk about the faith it requires to allow God's mission to be the focus of the church. “It is not so much the case that God has a mission for his church in the world, as that God has a church for his mission in the world. Christian theologians and students are aware that evangelicals in the Majority World now outnumber those in North America and Europe, and many want to know more about emerging voices in the global church. At the same time, these voices are largely absent from Western evangelical theology. In Why Evangelical Theology Needs the Global Church (Baker Group, 2024), Stephen Pardue seeks to bridge this divide by arguing, biblically and theologically, that it is imperative for Western evangelical theology to engage with the global church, and he provides examples of how this can be done. Case studies throughout the book illustrate opportunities for fruitful engagement with non-Western theology in various areas of Christian doctrine. Dave Broucek is a retired cross-cultural missionary/coordinator of continuing education/international ministries director. He interviews authors who provide careful reflection on all aspects of the theology and practice of Christian mission. Learn more about your ad choices. Parts of the global Church have a very different kind of challenge on their hands than we do in the West: how to handle explosive growth. In many parts of Africa, the Church is running out of room in their seminaries, convents, and monasteries because of rising vocations, and the laity are collectively practicing their faith in ways that put the Church in the West to shame. In Nigeria, upwards of 94 percent of Catholics go to Mass every week while the U.S. can't even reach 30 percent in weekly mass attendance among Catholics. What explains this wide discrepancy? What are we in the West getting so wrong about evangelization, and what is the Church in Africa getting so right?
