I had the great fortune to talk to some fabulous people all of the time, and Multi-Award Winning Playwright, Dominique Morriseau, is no exception. This playwright has taken to the written word to create amazing conversations with her plays like SUNSET BABY, DETROIT 67, SKELETON CREW. Her recent Off Broadway play, PIPELINE, starring one of my fierce STAGE/FILM//TV Divas, Theater World Award Winner, Karen Pittman, ( DISGRACED, Marvel's LUKE CAGE, FX's THE AMERICANS). It is a discussion about the pipeline that is taking young men of color out of our schools and right into the prison system. Some of the forces could be responsible for making this happen. The sun's out, the temperature's rising, and yet another month of TV has come and gone - and the hosts of TV Party are ready to send it off in style! Film editor Dominick Suzanne-Mayer joins us once again to weigh on everything we saw (and some we didn't see) in May. (The short version: if you haven't watched Killing Eve, get on that shit what's wrong with you.)Along with our effusive praise for BBC America's spy-thriller smash hit, we dig deep into the news of the week (including some surprise renewals and exciting casting decisions) and pile more onto our pre-existing love for FX's The Americans and HBO's Barry and Westworld. In the meantime, NBC is doing Hair as a live musical, and we simply don't know what to do with that information. Add to that a murderer's row of geek-outs over space operas, wrestling and kiddie cooking competitions, and it's just another week of delightful mayhem on TV Party. There, The Loser's Club hosts Randall Colburn and Michael Roffman lie in wait to help them discuss our picks of the most frightening moments in television history.Whether it's the existential horror of Twin Peaks: The Return's Woodsman, or the simple tension of Walter and Skyler White's scuffle over a kitchen knife in Breaking Bad, television's greatest shocks come in many forms, and we're here to discuss them all, as well as what makes a great TV scare in the first place. Steve speaks with Kelly AuCoin (@KellyAuCoin77) from FX's The Americans.
Big episode this week! First off, Andrew is continuing his #Winestunts odyssey from last week, which as Kathryn pointed out was something that he chose to inflict upon himself. It results in a lot of love. While that continues, the crew introduces a new segment in which they sort their favorite TV characters into their probable Hogwarts houses, starting with perennial favorite Jane the Virgin. And we come to the thrilling, wig-tastic conclusion to the first season of FX's The Americans. Enjoy!
Lots of genre shows have a character who isn't in on the central secret - not because they're dumb, usually, but because of contrivances that serve the plot. We've dubbed this archetype "The Babineaux" in honor of one of our favorite recent examples. After that, we talk out the next leg of our TV Book Club discussion of FX's The Americans. The tension amps up in this run of episodes, and episode nine in particular begins a steady escalation that will carry us all the way to the finale. Special guest Sophie Brookover joins us this week to help us talk everything out! You can read more of her and Margaret's work in the weekly Two Bossy Dames newsletter, which you can find at www.tinyletter.com/twobossydames.Â
This week we all learn more about each other and ourselves by talking about all the kids' TV we watched as kids. Some of those relationships were healthier than others. Then, we move on to a still-entertaining but much bleaker subject: episodes two through five of the first season of FX's The Americans.Â
This week, Margaret lays out in detail JUST how frustrated she is with "the one piece of the Shondaverse [she] still engage[s] with on a weekly basis," which is just as vitriolic and frustrated as you'd expect. After that, we launch into our next TV Book Club selection, the pilot of FX's The Americans. Spies are more fun than lawyers, at least in this episode.Â
Special thanks to Brian G. for commissioning this custom podcast using our Subbable subscription system! Brian decided to have us take a peek at FX's The Americans, episodes 101 and 102, "Pilot" and "The Clock", and we were only too happy to oblige. The Americans is a taut, well made, great looking, and stylish thriller set in the heydey of the Reagan Administration revolving around two Russian intelligence agents deeply embedded as American civilians. What did we like? What didn't we like? Listen and find out! Thanks again, Brian! What's good folks? On this week's episode Mando and Evan ask what makes TV shows great? We get into FX's The Americans, Game of Thrones, Orange is the New Black, The Wire and a few others. No spoilers as far as we can tell. They also talk about when race and gender tropes on TV become so annoying it ruins otherwise amazing shows. Of course, we finish with 10 minutes of Survivor talk. #allhailsurvivor! 'Till next week! PTR Crew
Nerdist Editor-in-Chief, Brian Walton joins the dynamic duo for a little bit of Veev Lemonade on the rocks and end up coining a spoof of FX's THE AMERICANS right off the bat.
