Interview by Angela CroudaceIt's not every day you get to chat with a band while they're deep in the chaos of tour preparations, but that's exactly what happened during my interview with ERRA's JT and Jesse Cash. The scene? Jesse roaming the aisles of a Walmart sorting out some last-minute tour merch. As Jesse explained, “Our merch guy is burning the midnight oil, and I had to run and get some things before it was too late.” Nothing says rock star quite like managing tour logistics while dodging shopping carts.Despite the unconventional setting, the conversation quickly shifted to their latest album, CURE. ERRA's sixth studio album marks a significant creative evolution, and both JT and Jesse discussed how the band's approach has changed over time. While their past albums often focused on technical precision and complex structures, CURE introduced a more groove-based, accessible sound. JT shared, “Every time we sat down to write, we just kept getting these groovier ideas, and we just kind of stuck with it.” It wasn't a deliberate shift, but rather a reflection of where the band's creativity took them during the writing process.Jesse, who had been diving into a mix of nihilistic media at the time, was inspired by the 1997 film Cure by Kyoshi Kurosawa. The bleakness of the film mirrored the darker, introspective themes in the album's lyrics, like “Crawl Backwards Out of Heaven.” However, Jesse admitted that his bandmate Joseph was less than enthused by the deep, art-house inspiration. “Joseph doesn't always have time for my 'art house bullshit,'" he laughed, citing his bandmate's love for Fast & Furious as a source of inspiration for more straightforward ideas.Despite the shifts in their sound, the band stays true to its roots of pushing creative boundaries. When asked how they avoid formulaic songwriting, Jesse humorously responded, “I just tell JT we can't write a song that sounds like Veil of Maya,” acknowledging how self-awareness helps them remain true to their evolving style.ERRA's tour is also a family affair, with Silent Planet and Resolve joining them on the road. Jesse eagerly anticipated the tour antics, particularly the "fortress of piss bottles" famously built by Silent Planet's Garrett Russell. While the rest of us might cringe at the thought, for ERRA, it's just another weird tour memory to laugh about (Yeah Jesse, we hope Garrett never watches this interview either!).In the end, whether it's touring with friends or evolving creatively, ERRA continues to prove that they're not afraid to push the limits of metal music. As they wrap up their interview, Jesse's final words offer a fitting end: “We go way back with them,” speaking not just of Silent Planet, but of the enduring relationships and creative passion that continue to drive ERRA forward.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Silent Planet over Zoom video!Every once in a while, wildflowers will sprout en masse in the middle of the California desert. Known as a “SUPERBLOOM,”this phenomenon paints lush colors across a traditionally arid and barren landscape. The emergence and evolution of Silent Planet mirrors this phenomenon. Since 2009, the California quartet—Garrett Russell [vocals, guitar], Mitchell Stark [guitar], Alex Camerena [drums], and Nick Pocock [bass]—have set themselves apart in the realm of heavy music. Amplifying hypnotic hooks across alternately raw and rich soundscapes steeped in hardcore, post-rock, metal, and ambient textures, the award-winning group has generated tens of millions of streams and earned tastemaker praise. Now, the musicians tell a story as massive as their sound on their aptly titled fifth full-length offering, SUPERBLOOM [Solid State Records].Silent Planet has consistently transfixed a diehard fanbase. The group dropped a string of acclaimed albums, including The Night God Slept [2014], Everything Was Sound [2016], When The End Began [2018], and Iridescent [2021]—which Hysteria hailed as “a vulnerable and emotional LP.” Not to mention, album standout “Trilogy” generated 5.3 million Spotify streams to sit alongside their genre-bending triumph “Panic Room” from the 2016 release, currently at 5 million. The guys notably took home “Best Underground Band” at the 2017 Alternative Press Music Awards and toured with the likes of Motionless In White, August Burns Red, Beartooth, and The Contortionist.Over the course of two years, they recorded what would become SUPERBLOOM in Woodland Hills, CA alongside longtime producer and frequent collaborator Daniel Braunstein. A jarring turn of events split the process into two seasons. Trekking through a Wyoming snowstorm in November 2022, Silent Planet survived a vehicle accident. The van flipped over, leaving the group laying in the wreckage of a bitter Wyoming snowstorm as Garrett was hospitalized with a fractured back and head wound requiring stitches.Along the way, they settled on a conceptual framework, expanding the scope of their vision like never before.Silent Planet initially teased the record with “:Signal:” followed by “Antimatter.” On the latter, spacey electronic transmissions buzz. Pivoting on a dime, it dissolves into a stomping industrial groove offset by synth swells.“It's the conclusion of the story we're telling,” he says. “This is the finale. There are different levels of a close encounter. It's a close encounter of the fifth kind. It's the destination of the music.”In the end, Silent Planet continues to elevate and uplift heavy music to another dimension. We want to hear from you! In this interview Garrett Russell of Silent Planet talks with TruthSeekah about Philosophy, Psychedelics, Intimacy With Jesus and a whole lot more. This was a great conversation and we connected on so many levels. Silent Planet are a Los Angeles-based metalcore band whose music embraces dynamics swinging from quiet, atmospheric contemplation to a full-on sonic assault, and whose lyrics offer a thoughtful view of the challenges of life in a destructive, chaotic world. Taking their name from a novel by C.S. Lewis, Silent Planet was formed in 2009 by Garrett Russell, who says he was inspired to use music to express his spiritual ideals while volunteering at a Haitian orphanage as part of a Christian youth mission. Lead vocalist Russell teamed up with Thomas Freckleton on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, guitarist Spencer Keene, bassist Igor Efimov, and drummer Alex Camarena, and Silent Planet began playing West Coast venues. (Keene does not always tour with the group; guitarist Mitchell Stark takes his place on the road.) In 2012, Silent Planet released their debut EP, Come Wind, Come Weather, which was produced by Matt Goldman. In 2014, the band released a second EP, Lastsleep (1944-1946), which earned rave reviews and attracted the attention of respected metal/punk label Solid State Records; they promptly signed the band, and Silent Planet's first full-length album, The Night God Slept, was released in November 2014. Two years and many performances later, the band issued their much anticipated sophomore studio long-player Everything Was Sound.
