Gosztola reports in The Dissenter on Biden's failure to fulfill his campaign promises when it comes to government transparency, accountability and press freedom, as well as how these have eroded through successive presidencies this century. Gosztola describes how it has become more difficult to access information about what the government is doing and the abuse of the state secrets privilege to hide crimes being committed by entities such as the CIA. He also discusses what we can expect from the incoming Trump administration. For more information, visit PopularResistance.org.

Julian Assange has been a free man since June, but the issue of his long confinement in a UK prison is still in the news. Recently he testified before the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), and the Council then passed a resolution declaring that Assange could be designated a political prisoner. Independent journalist Kevin Gosztola joins Mickey to examine the implications of the PACE decision. They also discuss other press-freedom issues, notably the unprecedented death toll among journalists in the Gaza Strip, at the hands of Israeli forces. Then Steve Macek looks at foreign campaign spending in U.S. elections, taking note both of its widespread presence as well as the relative lack of interest by corporate media in reporting on the subject. He observes that only occasional stories about individual politicians' potential campaign funding transgressions (such as those of NYC Mayor Eric Adams) make the news, but the system itself is seldom covered. Kevin Gosztola is the editor of the Dissenter newsletter, www.thedissenter.org. His book on the Julian Assange case, Guilty of Journalism, was published in 2023.   The post Assange testifies at PACE / Pervasiveness of foreign money in U.S. political campaigns appeared first on KPFA.

fWotD Episode 2647: Free and Candid Disquisitions Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 3 August 2024 is Free and Candid Disquisitions.Free and Candid Disquisitions is a 1749 pamphlet written and compiled by John Jones, a Welsh Church of England clergyman, and published anonymously. The work promoted a series of specific reforms to both the Church of England and its mandated book for liturgical worship, the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Through these proposed changes, Jones hoped that the more Protestant independent Dissenters – who had largely broken with the Church of England in 1662 and been legally tolerated since 1689 – could be reintegrated into the church.Free and Candid Disquisitions followed a failed attempt at a revised Book of Common Prayer in 1689 and other unsuccessful efforts towards reintegrating the independent Protestant Dissenters. Jones's proposals included combining and abbreviating the Sunday liturgies, removing latent Catholic influences from several rites, and providing improved hymns and psalms. He also challenged the requirement that clergy subscribe to the doctrinal statements of the Thirty-nine Articles. The text included an appendix of statements from historical figures and Jones's contemporaries supporting his positions. The pamphlet's contents were the subject of significant discussion, with several responding texts both lauding and criticizing Jone's work. Despite a positive reception by Thomas Herring, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Jones's proposals were generally not accepted by the Church of England. However, his suggested alterations to the prayer book and advocacy of privately published liturgies were influential upon several Dissenter liturgical texts – including Theophilus Lindsey's liturgy and successive Unitarian prayer books – and the first editions of the American Episcopal Church's prayer book. Until the beginning of the Tractarian movement in the 19th century, Free and Candid Disquisitions remained a major influence on proposed liturgical changes in the Church of England. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:31 UTC on Saturday, 3 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Free and Candid Disquisitions on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Emma.

Although Julian Assange is free and home in his native Australia, his story and decade-long suffering at the hands of the U.S. government must never be forgotten for the sake of the survival of the First Amendment. In this episode of the Scheer Intelligence podcast, host Robert Scheer is joined by Kevin Gosztola, who runs The Dissenter newsletter and has been reporting on the Assange case and whistleblowers in the U.S. for more than a decade. Together, they underscore the significance of the Assange case and delve into the details explored in Gosztola's recent book, "Guilty of Journalism." Gosztola makes clear one of the main points of the whole ordeal, which is the inconsistency in the U.S.’s interpretation of its own laws. “The First Amendment and the Espionage Act are in conflict in this country. You can't reconcile the two, at least the way that the Justice Department wants to use the Espionage Act against people who aren't even just U.S. citizens. They're trying to apply U.S. law to international journalists,” Gosztola told Scheer. The U.S. response to the internet age and the powerful journalistic revelations of Assange and WikiLeaks was to criminalize such actions, sending a clear message: anyone attempting to blow the whistle or expose the U.S. government's crimes would face severe punishment, including the use of the Espionage Act, which could imprison someone for life. “Unlike Daniel Ellsberg, [Chelsea] Manning didn't have to sit there at a Xerox machine making copies. [She] just sent the copies of the documents to WikiLeaks, and then WikiLeaks had all these files that they could share with the world,” Gosztola said. Despite the online journalism revolution, many in the media space still remained quiet throughout the  Assange debacle both because of their ties to government officials and their lack of professional rigor. Gosztola posed several questions to them: “Where were you? Why weren't you doing the investigations to uncover these details? Why did this WikiLeaks organization come along and reveal these details about Afghanistan, the Iraq War, the nature of US foreign policy? Why do you accept that all of this information that was classified should be classified?”

Scott talks with journalist Mohamed Elmaazi about the latest Assange hearing before the UK High Court. The hearing, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, saw the Assange team requesting the ability to make an appeal on the order extraditing the Wikileaks founder to the United States. Elmaazi, who attended the trial, explains the arguments each side is using at this stage. He and Scott also take a step back and talk about how ridiculous this case against Assange is, bringing up and shooting down all the common myths used to smear this heroic journalist. It's Day X. Hearings are happening in the United Kingdom to determine whether Julian Assange will be extradited to the United States. His lawyers are trying to convince the UK's High Court of Justice to permit an appeal hearing. If the court declines, it's very likely that Assange will be extradited within days and face trial here. The long case of Julian Assange has been a travesty of justice. While Assange spent years stuck in the Ecuadorian embassy, and now over 5 years in terrible conditions in Belmarsh Prison, known as Britain's Guantanamo Bay, those who committed the crimes he exposed still walk free. All along the way, the UK and US governments have violated the rights of Assange and his supporters. We're joined by Kevin Gosztola, the editor of The Dissenter, the author of the book Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange, co-host of the podcast Unauthorized Disclosure and moreSupport the show

Unique Robert Ballagh Moore Street PrintAs regular readers of this column know I have been involved for a very long time in the campaign to protect and develop as a historic and cultural quarter the Moore St. Terrace and its environs in Dublin. The entire terrace 10-25 Moore Street was occupied by the evacuated GPO garrison at the end of Easter Week 1916. The developer - Hammerson - wants to demolish much of the terrace. You Are Never Alone With A Book.  I'm glad to say I finished reading a few books over the last month so I will update you on them over the next couple of weeks.First off  is The Ghost Limb by Claire Mitchell. This is an intriguing read and Ms Mitchell is a persuasive writer, gentle, witty and positive. She describes herself as an alternative Protestant and Ghost Limb has a sub-title ‘Alternative Protestants and the Spirit of 1798'. In this compelling book a  group of these citizens retrace the steps of the United Irishmen - and women- who worked for the unity of Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter over two hundred years ago as a means to end the connection with England.Walking with my MotherOur mother Annie Hannaway – Annie Adams died on the 4th September 1992. Her spirit lives on in the memory of our family and those who knew her. Here's a little poem I wrote a few years ago.

I need help. Since last February, when I last asked for support, some more patrons had to cancel their support because their financial situation changed. I have been helped by a few donations over these last months, but I stand at $715 of support by the time of the recording of this video (July 31st), and I need to go up to $900 to keep the channel/podcast sustainable. Over the past 5 years and a half, I've already released 817 interviews, have already done 865 interviews, and already have new interviews scheduled until December 2023. All of the work for the channel and podcast is done by me alone, and it takes a lot of time to prepare each interview. I've been doing my very best to bring you rigorous interviews on Science and Philosophy. I am very thankful for all kinds of support I've gotten from people over the years. The only thing I want is to be able to continue doing this work, which has been extremely rewarding. If you like what I am doing, and if you can support me, please do it. I need your financial support. I am leaving the links to my Patreon page and to PayPal, if you can so kindly support me there. In this episode, Sasha and Stella sit down with Sara Stockton, MA, LMFT. Sara is a licensed marriage and family therapist who initially worked with affirmative clinicians, fully embracing gender identity theory. Initially, Sara earnestly believed in her work and its potential to help transgender youth. Over time, she began to doubt the field's effectiveness, the emerging adoption of queer theory bias within the field, and grew concerned with the poor treatment outcomes she began encountering with patients.Sara Stockton is a licensed marriage and family therapist, lecturer, researcher, presenter, and clinical supervisor of a psychotherapy practice in central New York. In 2012, she co-authored and published one of the first mental health assessments utilized to assess youth readiness for medical treatment and gender transition. Sara spent the first part of her career as a clinician treating and advocating on behalf of youth and families surrounding issues with gender. She spent time traveling to teach and train medical facilities, physicians, and schools on how to provide what was then called "gender-affirming care." Sara has treated well over one hundred families, and she also wrote many of the first letters that were used to approve gender transition surgeries on minors. This conversation explores Sara's professional journey, her moments of doubt and realization, and her decision to speak up and raise awareness about the challenges and potential pitfalls in the field of gender-affirming care. She shares very candidly and courageously about her personal observations of shifts in the patient population, their evolving presentation, and the practices and perceptions around gender identity versus her training. She found herself increasingly uncomfortable with the ways in which certain practical and thoughtful considerations are being disregarded in the affirmation approach. This is an important discussion exposing the complexities faced by clinicians in the field and the need for more professionals to share their experiences and concerns openly. It is incredibly important to understand the perspectives of clinicians like Sara in order to shed light on the broader issues surrounding gender-affirming care. For more of our conversation with Sara Stockton, just out listener community here: https://www.patreon.com/WiderLensPodLinks:Sara Stockton on Twitter@MrsSaraStocktonAisling Therapywww.aislingtherapy.com Regrets of a Trans-Care Specialist | Sara Stockton | EP 342 (The Dr. Jordan B. On the latest program, we celebrate Daniel Ellsberg Week (April 24-30), co-sponsored by The Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Democracy & and RootsAction Education Fund, as we honor whistleblowers in support of a truly free press from Dan Ellsberg to Julian Assange. First, Mickey talks with journalist Kevin Gosztola, author of Guilty of Journalism. Kevin gives important updates on the Assange case as the WikiLeaks founder languishes in a Belmarsh prison awaiting potential extradition to the US to be tried under the Espionage Act. Then, in the second segment, we share more from a very special conversation between Kevin Gosztola and famed Pentagon Papers whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg. Ellsberg spoke with Kevin last month on the occasion of the release of Kevin's book Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange. In part two of this interview, Ellsberg shares information about his historical relations with the press, as well as his pessimistic view of today's US press. We share it in honor of Daniel Ellsberg Week. NOTES: Kevin Gosztola is the managing editor of Shadowproof, and also writes at The Dissenter. He has covered the Julian Assange legal proceedings in the UK from their beginning, as well as other press-freedom and whistleblower cases. His new book on the Assange case, Guilty of Journalism is now available in bookstores. Daniel Ellsberg is best known for leaking classified Pentagon documents in 1971, which revealed covert operations against North Vietnam, as well as secret assessments that the war could not be won, and executive-branch lies to Congress and the US public. In the decades since then, Ellsberg has remained an antiwar activist, and an ally of whistleblowers. The news of his recent diagnosis of an inoperable cancer has prompted press-freedom advocates to declare a week of appreciation for Ellsberg, to begin Monday April 24. This week in the Cold, we're talking about the art and purpose of conversation. Not just any conversation, but the kind that allows for nuance, true insights, a real connection. As a fiction writer, my greatest tool is observation. To be able to capture the essence of a character and do it generously is what makes for a good story, as far as I'm concerned. Something that feels light on the page and sticks with you. Having conversations with people - even when they are very different from me and hold opposing views - is what enables that. That's why I also want to offer you what I think is a long, meandering, complex and wonderful conversation. It's between me and my friend, Ricardo Lopes, aka The Dissenter, and happened on his podcast of the same name. As promised on this week's Cold, here's the YouTube link: #730 Victoria Dougherty: Science and Literature, Character Development, Realism, and Free Speech - YouTube The Dissenter with Ricardo Lopes is also available on Spotify and all the usual suspects. Bookseller, publisher, Dissenter and dinner-party host, Joseph Johnson was a great enabler in the late 18th-century literary landscape . . . Daisy Hay is the author of Dinner with Joseph Johnson: Books and Friendship in a Revolutionary Age and Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Exeter, and Kathryn Sutherland is the author of Why Modern Manuscript Matters and Senior Research Fellow in English at the University of Oxford. Together they join the Slightly Foxed editors to discuss Joseph Johnson's life and work at St Paul's Churchyard, the heart of England's book trade since medieval times.   We listen to the conversation around Johnson's dining-table as Coleridge and Wordsworth, Joseph Priestley and Benjamin Franklin, Mary Wollstonecraft and William Blake debate the great issues of the day. And we watch as Johnson embarks on a career that will become the foundation stone of modern publishing. We hear how he takes on Olaudah Equiano's memoir of enslavement and champions Anna Barbauld's books for children, how he argues with William Cowper over copyright and how he falls foul of bookshop spies and is sent to prison. From Johnson's St Paul's we then travel to Mayfair, where John Murray II is hosting literary salons with Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott, and taking a chance on Jane Austen. To complete our tour, we glimpse the anatomy experiments in the basement of Benjamin Franklin's house by the Strand. Our round-up of book recommendations includes Konstantin Paustovsky's The Story of a Life which begins in Ukraine, Winifred Holtby's conversations with Wollstonecraft and Woolf, a fresh look at Jane Austen's Emma and an evocation of the Aldeburgh coast as we visit Ronald Blythe for tea. My favorite part of the constitution is the first amendment which our freedom of speech is written about. Without this precious amendment, we wouldn't have the right to speak, share thoughts, and ideas, write books, make movies and art, or anything else. We would be silenced. But what happens when only one ideology or thought is listened to? Confusion, chaos, divisive words, actions, and anger... a lot of anger. I address this issue here in the episode. I tell a story that happened only weeks ago at Podcast Movement 2022 in Dallas, Texas. Suffice it to say, there was a kerfuffle regarding The Daily Wire and the Podcast Movement event and it wasn't pleasant.  This might be "the thing" that brings a lot of questions to the forefront. And dissenting views might, hopefully, bring us together in this divisive world. Please!
