Greg Woodland is a scriptwriter, director and once upon a time…an aspiring punk rocker. After a number of his script projects, including one picked up by Disney, didn't make it to production he turned to crime fiction to tell his stories. His debut THE NIGHT WHISTLER, dubbed a rural gothic noir, was actually adapted from a script he'd written and inspired in part from a real life crime his mum endured. His second book THE CARNIVAL IS OVER has a few characters carry over from The Night Whistler…and is set in the same fictionalised town in NSW's New England region.Disclosure: These show notes contain Booktopia affiliate links, meaning I get a little commission if you decide to make a purchase through my links, at no cost to you AND authors get a book sale (including me!). John M. Green's cracking art heist, underworld thriller FRAMED is a ripper of a read. The main character JJ is a whip-smart Aussie art conservator who finds herself lured into a dark web of intrigue, deception and murder after she believes she spots a long-lost masterpiece through the window of a luxury apartment. It's a wild ride that spans locations around the globe. John is the author of six crime thrillers including FRAMED and turned to writing after a career in law and investment banking. Alexandra Shapiro is a New York criminal defence attorney and one of the leading appeals lawyers in the United States. Early in her legal career Alexandra was a clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, when the iconic legal figure had just started on the Supreme Court. Alexandra was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan before starting her own firm. She has a particular focus on the defence of criminal insider trading cases…these are complex cases where she says sometimes people can unwittingly find themselves charged with really serious crimes…While she's deep in the work of true life crime every day, Alexandra has turned to writing fiction as a way to shed light on how the criminal justice system works…and its failings. The book we are going to talk about in this episode is one of my stand-out reads this year. Debut author John Byron's dark, thrilling crime fiction THE TRIBUTE sees a tough, blokey Sydney Detective Dave Murphy chasing a serial killer obsessed with a 16th century anatomy text called The Fabrica. And his art historian sister Jo joins the hunt as well. The Tribute is a tantalising blend of medical-forensic and police procedural that has an important issue underpinning the narrative - what is to be a man in modern Australian society? I love crime fiction that is dark and character-driven and The Tribute is exactly this - it's jaw-droppingly good! Ellen J. Green has written a book called Murder in the Neighbourhood about America's first recorded modern day mass shooting in 1949 in Camden, New Jersey. The gunman was Howard Unruh, a war veteran who killed 13 people from his neighbourhood including three children, in just 12 minutes. It rocked the state and the nation. Sadly it wasn't an anomaly and mass shootings have continued. Ellen is a therapist at a maximum security prison and encounters the tragedy of violence every day. Murder in the Neighbourhood is her first non-fiction book. My entry into the work of bestselling Scottish author Stuart MacBride is his latest book No Less the Devil … and I absolutely loved it. This book features the character, Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh who is part of a team working around the clock to find a serial killer nicknamed the Bloodsmith. Stuart is also the author of the bestselling series of books featuring Detective Sergeant Logan McRae, set in Aberdeen. Logan was first introduced to readers in Cold Granite. No Less the Devil is published by Bantam Press (Imprint of Penguin)You can follow Stuart on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/stuartmacbridebooksThe book Stuart recommends at the end of this episode is Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson. Stuart also mentions his Aussie author friend Adrian Highland's book Diamond Dove.Meaning of the Scottish word THRAWN that Stuart mentions in relation to the Scots is, according to the Scottish Language Centre, stubbornness and absolute conviction.Your host is Emily WebbFollow Emily on Twitter https://twitter.com/emilybwebbInstagram https://instagram.com/emilywebbcrimeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@emilywebbcrimeFacebook facebook.com/emily.webb.podcaster.authorWebsite: https://www.emilywebbcrime.com/Emily is the author of:Suburban True Crime: Cases you'll never forget and some you've never heard of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who Kill Killer Content is a Smartfella production. I was introduced to John Stamp's writing through his latest book - a crime action thriller called Blood Red Ivory. It's got a compelling lead character Special Agent Tyrone Benhoff who is with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service - that's NCIS, like the popular TV show.Tyrone is on the outer after getting on the wrong side of his command…and he's transferred to Djibouti in Africa. Whilst this is fiction, John, who writes across crime, action and horror genres, has first hand experience of what this world is like. He's served as a Special Agent of the FBI, NCIS, and as a Police Officer in South Carolina. We chat a lot about crime and writing…and also podcasting because John has his own podcast talking to true crime writers. The domestic thriller, or domestic noir, is a genre that is really popular and we have some Aussie authors writing gripping tales that are published worldwide.Kylie Kaden is one of these authors. I discovered Queensland-based Kylie by reading her latest book One of Us which lifts the lid on what, on the surface, appears to be the polished suburban life. It's a premise that I can't get enough of - what goes on behind closed doors? What secrets are people desperately trying to keep hidden below that Instagram-perfect veneer? Australian debut author Dinuka McKenzie burst on to the crime fiction scene early in 2022 with her police procedural The Torrent. What I really like about The Torrent is that the main character Detective Sergeant Kate Miles is heavily pregnant, in her last week of work before maternity leave and has a pretty stable home life - not the usual circumstances for a police officer that we traditionally see in crime fiction. In this episode you'll hear Dinuka talk about her path to publication, how her own life inspired the creation of DS Kate Miles and the crime author she absolutely loves. Rebecca Griffiths is a British author whose books had me staying up way too late…which is always a reliable sign of a great read.Rebecca spoke to me from her home in rural Wales and we chatted about her books, finding confidence in her creativity and her formative life experience that has meant she isn't afraid to go to some difficult places with her writing. This conversation discusses topics of Rebecca's lived experience of abuse when she was a child. As well as some details of the crimes of the killers who feature in her books. And when we recorded the conversation, it was before Rebecca's book The Hidden Child was released and you'll hear us refer to it as The Body on the Moor. Sheerwater by Melbourne author Leah Swann is one of those books that I think about often…long after I read it.In 2021 I was on the judging panel for Sisters in Crime Australia's Davitt Awards. Sheerwater was one of the many crime books we read by Australian women authors and it ended up winning the award for best debut novel. It's a tense, emotional story of a woman called Ava whose two young sons go missing when she stops to help at the sight of a light plane crash. Ava and her sons were on their way to a new life in a small coastal town. The reasons unfold as the story progresses. Thanks to guest Leah Swann.Find out more about Leah at her website. An interview with Garry Disher has been on my Wishlist for so long so I am thrilled I got the chance to speak to him. Garry has written more than 50 books across different genres but he's best known for his searing crime fiction. Garry was writing crime set in Australia for decades, long before rural or outback noir became popular or had the status that it does now. My entry into Garry's writing was the brilliant Bitter Wash Road, which introduced us to his character Constable Paul Hirschausen, a cop exiled to a rural community where he's an outsider. There's three books in the Hirsch series and Garry's currently working on the next one. His new book The Way it is Now introduces us to cop Charlie Deravin who is back in his coastal country hometown where the mystery of his mother's disappearance 20 years before still hangs heavily. The Way it is Now is published by Text Publishing. Mike Masson spent more than 30 years in the Metropolitan Police in London, having moved to the capital from a small island in Scotland where he grew up in a large family. Michael Burge is a writer and journalist based in Northern New South Wales, in a very literary-named town called Deepwater. I was privileged to talk to Michael about some deeply personal experiences and his advocacy for the LGBTIQA+ community that has influenced his first fiction book Tank Water. Tank water takes place over two critical time periods - 1985 and 2005 with the protagonist James returning to his small country hometown to attend his cousin Tony's funeral. People believe Tony died by suicide but James has his sneaking suspicions that this may not be the case. Australian author Richard Anderson is a second-generation farmer in Northern New South Wales where he and his wife run a beef cattle farm. Richard's books are rural noir and authentically so because of his lived experience on the land. Richard says writing about crime allows him to “articulate my condition, to talk about my life without going on about how hard it is to be a farmer”. I read Richard's second crime novel, Boxed, which has one of the most inventive ways to dispose of a body that I've ever read. Boxed synopsis Dave Martin is down on his luck: his wife has left him; his farm is a failure; his house is a mess; he has withdrawn from his community and friends; and tragedy has stolen his capacity to care. He passes the time drinking too much and buying cheap tools online, treating the delivered parcels as gifts from people who care about him.And then boxes begin to arrive in the mail: boxes that he didn't order, but ones that everyone around him seems to want desperately. As he tries to find out the secret of the boxes, Dave is drawn into a crazy world of red herrings and wrong turns, good guys and bad, false friends and true, violence, lust, fear, revenge, and a lot, lot more. It's not a world he understands, but is it the only one Dave can live in?Your host is Emily Webb Follow Emily on Twitter https://twitter.com/emilybwebbInstagram https://instagram.com/emilywebbcrimeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@emilywebbcrimeFacebook facebook.com/emily.webb.podcaster.authorWebsite: https://www.emilywebbcrime.com/ Emily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who Kill http://clandestinepress.net/products/angels-of-death Thanks to this week's guest Richard Anderson. James V. Irving is a lawyer who lives in Arlington Virginia and is also the author of two crime mysteries featuring a character called Joth Proctor, also a lawyer, who finds himself in the seedy world of petty crime, strip clubs, fraud, and death.James, who goes by Jim, was a private detective in the 1970s before he went to law school and he has some interesting tales from that time, including dressing up as a priest to get people to talk to him for some of the cases he was investigating.Jim wrote about his time as a private detective for the excellent website crimereads.com called “What life was really like for a private detective in the 1970s”.FRIENDS LIKE THESEJoth Proctor is an under-employed, criminal defense lawyer with a marginal solo practice in Arlington, Virginia, where a mix of southern charm, shady business dealings, and Washington, D.C. intrigue pervade the story. Upon the suspicious death of the wife of a close friend, Proctor enters a web of drug and alcohol abuse, family real estate deceit, and friends of questionable character whose intentions are not to be trusted. An ex-athlete, Proctor is cynical but principled, world-weary and still preoccupied with Heather Burke, the woman who jilted him years ago and remains a crucial player in his professional life. Everyone he knows and meets seems willing to bend the law and compromise their ethical standards in the pursuit of individual self-interest. Proctor places his reputation at risk as he navigates a world of strip clubs, corrupt cops, con men and crooks, including the sinister Jimmie Flambeau. Increasingly isolated, Joth must live by his wits in the midst of volatile circumstances and unpredictable twists of fate that place his career, his life and the lives of those he loves in jeopardy. Minnesota-born and raised and now Australian based author Amy Suiter Clarke's debut book Girl, 11 has a podcaster at the heart of the story - a former social worker called Elle Castillio who is determined to solve a serial killing case where each victim is a year younger than the last. It's so believable you'd think it was a true life podcast. BOOK SYNOPSISElle Castillo once trained as a social worker, supporting young victims of violent crime. Now she hosts a popular true crime podcast that focuses on cold cases of missing or murdered children. After four seasons of successfully solving these cases in Minnesota's Twin Cities, Elle decides to tackle her white whale: The Countdown Killer. Twenty years ago, TCK terrorized the community, kidnapping and ritualistically murdering three girls over seven days, each a year younger than the last. But after he took his eleven-year-old victim, the pattern—and the murders—abruptly stopped. No one has ever known why. When Elle follows up on a listener tip only to discover the man's dead body, she feels at fault. Then, within days, a child is abducted—a young girl who seems to fit suspiciously into the TCK sequence. While media and law enforcement long ago concluded that TCK was dead, Elle has never believed it. She had hoped her investigation would lay that suspicion to rest, but instead, her podcast seems to be creating new victims. Melbourne-based Ruth McIver's debut book I Shot the Devil l fictionalises the satanic panic of the 1980s and 1990s in North America where society became somewhat obsessed with the souls of teens and whether heavy metal was corrupting them. Ruth won the prestigious Richell Prize for emerging writers in 2018 for this novel. BOOK SYNOPSISErin Sloane was sixteen when high school senior Andre Villiers was murdered by his friends. They were her friends, too, led by the intense, charismatic Ricky Hell. Five people went into West Cypress Road Woods the night Andre was murdered. Only three came out.Ativan, alcohol and distance had dimmed Erin's memories of that time. But nearly twenty years later, an ageing father will bring her home. Now a journalist, she is asked to write a story about the Southport Three and the thrill-kill murder that mesmerised the country. Erin's investigation propels her closer and closer to a terrifying truth. And closer and closer to danger. Kyle Perry's debut The Bluffs is about a group of teen girls who go missing in the Tasmanian bushland with a cast of characters who are as wild as the landscape. His latest book The Deep centres around a family living on the rugged coastline of Tasmania, who have run a drug ring for generations using the fishing industry to ply their illegal activities. Born and bred in Tasmania, the island state that's at the bottom of Australia, Kyle is also a counselor and has worked in drug and alcohol rehabs, case management and with young people. He knows the hecticness and bleakness of drug addiction and societal issues and pressures from his years in this field. It's almost inevitable that debut author Nicola West would end up writing crime. She's the daughter of a police officer and when she was in Year 12 she wrote a letter to serial killer Ivan Milat as part of a school project. But more than that, Nicola is as tenacious as any main character you'll find in crime fiction. Nicola lives with chronic health conditions and she knows what it's like to fight for to get answers, just like her main character Lo in her debut novel Catch us the Foxes, set in a small town with a lot of secrets.Your host is Emily WebbFollow Emily onTwitterInstagram FacebookEmily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Nicola WestPurchase Catch Us the Foxes in our Bookshop https://australiantruecrimepodcast.com/shop/Listen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Google PodcastsListen on Spotify Thank you for listening! This is a Smart Fella production in conjunction with the acast creator network. I first discovered US crime author Nikki Dolson on Twitter. Twitter is actually quite a great space for discovering authors and I followed Nikki's tweets and got curious about her work. I'm so glad I did. Her book of short stories Love and Other Criminal Behaviour delves into the many different ways to love and the many ways to end up dead. Another thing that attracted me to Nikki's writing is that she has a fascination with contract killers and has a story about a complicated hit woman in an anthology called Dead-end Jobs.Nikki tells me about her life in Las Vegas, why she finds contract killers fascinating (we bond over our mutual love of John Wick) and the support and importance of the association Crime Writers of Color.---Your host is Emily WebbFollow Emily on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.Emily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Nikki Dolson.Find out more about the association Crime Writers of Color and the group's podcastPurchase Nikki's book in our BookshopListen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Google PodcastsListen on Spotify Thank you for listening! This is a Smart Fella production in conjunction with the acast creator network. British Author Clare Boyd writes domestic noir where on the surface things look good in the lives of her characters but scratch the surface and there's a different story underneath. In Clare's latest book The Pretty One she mines her experience as a model from age 15 to her early twenties to tell the story of Nell, who is scouted by an agent to enter the modeling world and it's this that sets in motion the cracking of the veneer of her family's seeming idyllic, domestic life.---Your host is Emily Webb Emily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Clare BoydMore info on Clare and her books herePurchase Clare's books in our BookshopListen on Apple PodcastsListen on Google PodcastsListen on SpotifyThank you for listening! For every story you hear about a breakout project like a script or book being snapped up by a production company there’s hundreds...even thousands where it takes serious hustle and years to get the funds to make it happen, if it happens at all. I thought it would be interesting to talk to someone who has got a project and a dream and the reality of how to make it happen. Melbourne writer and actor Jamie Wilson is that person and he’s written a crime script called Borrowed Time about two Aussie bikies feuding over missing drugs in the red light district of Patong Phuket in Thailand. Jamie had reached out wondering about how he could get info about his project out there and I thought…”why not?”.Here’s Jamie Wilson - actor, writer, director, sometimes rideshare driver, security guard and fitness industry employee. ---Your host is Emily Webb Emily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Jamie Wilson Find out more about Jamie here Listen on Apple PodcastsListen on Google PodcastsListen on SpotifyThank you for listening! Each time Aussie author Candice Fox releases a book I think “how can she top this? ” but she does...every time. Her latest crime thriller is no exception. The Chase is big, it’s bold and an absolute page-turner. It was brilliant to chat to Candice about her amazing life of crime writing including interviewing a serial killer for research and her somewhat unconventional upbringing that has prepared her for looking at some of life’s darker corners.---Your host is Emily WebbEmily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Candice FoxPurchase Candice’s book The Chase in our BookshopListen on Apple Podcasts Listen on Google PodcastsListen on Spotify Thank you for listening! For something a little different here’s a chat with Kiwi Craig Sisterson of Southern Cross Crime who champions Australian and New Zealand crime writers non-stop. Craig has turned his years of reviews and social posts from Southern Cross Crime into a book of the same name. Based in London, he’s a well-known face on the crime writing festival scene and founded the Ngaio Marsh awards for New Zealand writers. I came away from our chat excited to read more crime fiction from down under. Hope you do too! ---Your host is Emily Webb Emily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Craig Sisterson. Justin Smith is a recognised voice from Australian talkback radio as well as writing opinion pieces in print and appearing on TV.Now he’s turned fact to fiction, writing his first novel Babies of the Rose, which centres on three different characters whose lives intersect at Anzac Day while watching the dawn service at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance. Each of them carries trauma from battles - some from service in overseas conflicts - and they are looking for peace within.I spoke to Justin about how he drew on his extensive experience in news radio and covering Anzac Day services overseas at Gallipoli in Turkey and Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan to produce this debut novel.----Your host is Emily Webb Emily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Justin Smith. You can listen to Justin’s podcast The Columnist wherever you get your podcasts.Purchase Justin’s book in our BookshopListen on Apple PodcastsListen on Google PodcastsListen on SpotifyThank you for listening! If you like twists and turns in your thrillers you’ll want to read The Spiral. Written by Australian author Iain Ryan, The Spiral is gritty crime noir with a parallel fantasy storyline…think Choose Your Own Adventure or…if you were like me you’ll think Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone’s Fighting Fantasy series.Main character Erma is an academic living in Brisbane - an imperfect character whose somewhat messy life takes a sharp turn when she’s shot by a colleague. It’s a wild ride as readers go along with Erma as she searches for why.---Your host is Emily Webb Emily is the author of Angels of Death: Doctors and Nurses Who KillThanks to Iain RyanPurchase The Spiral in our BookshopListen on Apple PodcastsListen on Google PodcastsListen on Spotify See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
