In this episode, we are so thrilled to welcome Hall of Fame basketball legend and New Yorker, Sue Wicks. Her distinguished career is defined by records set and numerous accolades, MVP, all-star game and gold medal honors. She played forward in the WNBA for our very own hometown team, the New York Liberty since its inaugural season and was awarded the 2001 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award and was consistently voted fan favorite. You will soon understand why. Whether on or off the court, her characteristic humility and empathy makes it no surprise that she was, and still is a natural leader and a role model, especially for women, girls and LGBTQ people. Notably, Sue is the rare pioneer who paved the way for professional athletes to be out during their career. Even now in her role as owner of Violet Cove Oyster Company here in Long Island, she is making her mark as an oyster farmer and environmental activist for New York's waterways. For a long time being gay in sports was like being gay in the military. The unspoken rule was “don't ask, don't tell”, and ideally, pretend like you're not gay so as to not raise any suspicions. Even the most confident gay athletes in the 1980s, 1990s, and even the early 2000s, felt unsafe to come out. They feared being alienated from teammates or being ostracized in the locker room. Thankfully, a few openly gay athletes eventually had the courage to crack open the “closet door.” Since that time, the floodgates have opened and new generations of LGBTQ+ pioneers in sports have emerged. Below, we profile inspiring gay athletes who deserve recognition for being forerunners within our community. For years people have tried to offer answers about why there aren't more publicly out gay professional athletes in the big men's sports. One of the reasons given by people in sports and in the media is that they will suddenly be subjected to horrible treatment by fans and opposing players. Yet this week English soccer referee Ryan Atkin came out publicly as gay saying, "People don't shout at you any louder because of your sexuality." That completely contradicts the fearmongering that so many people are engaged in surrounding coming out in sports. We dive into the realities of this. Also, Major League Baseball wasted no time suspending Oakland A's player Matt Joyce for directing a gay slur at a game last week. Joyce has offered an apology and he accepted responsibility. Are suspensions an important part of tackling homophobic language in sports, or are they an arcane idea best substituted by "education"? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Canadian Olympic pole vaulter Shawn Barber came out as gay on Facebook in a brief post and then basically said nothing about it for weeks. Recently, when asked about coming out, he said: “It’s something that shouldn’t be a big deal,” Barber said, right after winning the Canadian championships. It’s a personal choice, it shouldn’t be so heavily debated." A recent column ignited a debate that we will weigh into. We discuss whether being an openly gay athlete should mean anything and what responsibilties, if any, such athletes have. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A new study of elite teen hockey players in Canada found growing acceptance for LGBT people but old thought patterns die hard. The locker room and its culture still holds sway, the report found. “The biggest concern they had with the idea of having a gay teammate, because this population had never had an openly gay one, was being naked in the showers with them. They were worried a gay teammate would see them naked and be attracted to them,” the author of the study said. We look at why showering with a gay teammate is still an issue, plus LGBT sports roundup. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
"I think a lot more athletes and people in the sports world will need to come out before we really see the change." Those are the words of Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr when asked about acceptance of gay people in sports. We examine the conumdrum of why more pro athletes don't come out. Is it fear? Media attention? Locker room dynamics? We also explore the often tone-deaf coverage the gays in sports debate gets from the mainstream media, where even getting the names right is hard. Coloradoan sports columnist Matt L. Stephen sits down with cross country runner Andrew Goodman, the first openly gay athlete in CSU history, to discuss the stigma around homosexuality in athletics.
There are no openly gay athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL or Major League Baseball. Ditto for major college football, and in the just-concluded NCAA men's tournament, there were no openly gay players. This is not the case in high school, where in the past week Outsports has featured stories about three high school athletes -- a football player in Arizona, a basketball player in Kentucky and a wrestler in Iowa. All three came out on their own terms and it wasn't easy. But they perservered and showed that's it's possible even in high school to be a gay athlete. Which makes the contrast with the pros all that more glaring. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Michael Sam announced this week that he will be on ABC's hit show 'Dancing With The Stars' this season. A lot of people are talking about NBA player Jason Collins right now. Yesterday, he came out, becoming the first openly gay player in major American team sports. There have been those who've spoken out in support of Jason Collins, including Bill Clinton and Kobe Bryant, who tweeted, “Proud of jasoncollins34. Don't suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others.” Not everyone, however, has been supportive. On Monday, on the ESPN show “Outside the Lines,” sports analyst Chris Broussard said, "I'm a Christian. I don't agree with homosexuality. I think it's a sin, as I think all sex outside of marriage between a man and a woman is." It's hard to know how Jason Collins is taking all the attention. And how he knew it was time to come out. But one person who might understand is Esera Tuaolo. Back in 2002, Tuaolo became the third former NFL player to come out. This was two years after he'd retired, and three years after he'd made it to the Super Bowl with the Atlanta Falcons. These days, he's an anti-bullying activist. Tuaolo's website is hateiswrong.com.
