The WNBA kicked off its new season last week with beauty brands lining up to gain access to the league's growing cohort of fans. In a gold rush that started around 2020, some of the industry's top brands have entered into multi-year sponsorships with the league or its top players. The most recent, Fenty's sponsorship of the New York Liberty, was announced earlier this month and kicked off on Saturday's home game opener with several activations including a "Gloss Bomb glam cam" where fans show off their beauty look. The NY Liberty, a top team in the league, has also received sponsorships from L'Oréal-owned brands Essie nail polish and NYX color cosmetics. Meanwhile, Amorepacific-owned Laneige became the Phoenix Mercury's official sponsor last year, mass hair-care brand Odele Beauty sponsors the Minnesota Lynx, and Glossier has been a league sponsor since 2020. What's more, Youth To The People has partnered with the Seattle Storm, and L'Oréal-owned Urban Decay was the official L.A. Sparks sponsor for two seasons. Plus, the Chicago Sky has partnerships with Covergirl, Olay and hair-care band Jamaican Mango and Lime. But perhaps one of the biggest deals is Sephora's sponsorship of the league's newest team, San Francisco's Golden State Valkyries, who will now play at the newly-renamed "Sephora Performance Center" in Oakland. And this is just a snapshot of the WNBA deals Glossy is tracking. “There was limited broadcast for women's sports [a few years ago], and now we have record-breaking viewership, which has been just absolutely amazing,” said Jacki Gemelos, a former WNBA player and coach turned sports agent. “Major brands rarely built campaigns around female athletes. And now athletes like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Alex Morgan and Simone Biles, just to name a few, are leading campaigns and not just being included.” As previously reported by Glossy, attention from the beauty industry aligns with a sharp rise in WNBA audience attention. Viewership on ESPN was up 155% last season and, within this, viewership among people aged 18–34 rose by 164% and viewership among women increased by 165% year-over-year. Glossy welcomed Gemelos to the podcast to discuss this change and provide context and advice for beauty execs looking to join in on the action. She provides context as to different types of deals, including the average costs and what makes a deal authentic. Gemelos is a lifelong basketball player who spent more than a decade playing professionally overseas and in the WNBA for the Chicago Sky and the Connecticut Sun. She was an assistant coach for the NY Liberty before joining Nike as an athlete community coordinator. Today, she's an agent at prestigious boutique firm Disrupt the Game, where she oversees deals for a roster of top talent. In today's episode, Gemelos discusses everything beauty execs need to know about this cultural shift. But first, hosts Lexy Lebsack and Sara Spruch-Feiner discuss the top headlines of the week. This includes QVC's foray into 24/7 social commerce selling through TikTok Shop, plus a bird's eye view on how the beauty industry did in the first quarter of the year, according to a new report from Circana market research company.
Men and women's pro-hoops popped off last weekend. The Knicks upset the Celtics to make their first final four appearance in over 20 years. Meanwhile, the WNBA saw record crowds, a Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese showdown, and their foul-filled play everyone's still talking about. Blake and Caroline break down the play and ask: if Caitlin and Angel moved on, why can't we? Imagine this: you're standing inside a trendy L.A. grocery store—maybe it's Erewhon. You've got a cooler full of canned soda that claims to be good for your gut. You're not a celebrity and you're not even the founder of the company. You're just a guy with a vision, a few samples, and the audacity to talk your way into a product launch. That was Steven Vigilante back in 2018. Today, Olipop—the better-for-you soda brand that he helped bring to life—is in more than 30,000 stores across the country. They've partnered with Barbie, NASCAR, the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty, and somehow even made it into a Luke Combs music video. But it didn't start there. Steven cut his teeth in venture capital, betting early on health forward brands. When he saw the potential in a fiber-packed functional soda, he jumped in—first as an advisor, and then as the architect behind some of the boldest growth and partnership strategies in beverage today. So how do you build a soda brand that dares to take on the likes of Coke and Pepsi? One that trades sugar for science and still wins hearts and taste buds across America? This week we present two stories from people who stood up against a system eager to tear them down. Part 1: After a car crash alters Emily Winn's life forever, she must relive the trauma when she testifies in a deposition. Part 2: Geneticist C. Brandon Ogbunu contemplates the role race has played in his academic career after he is confronted by the police. Dr. Emily Winn-Nuñez is a data scientist based in Brooklyn, NY where she lives with her husband and adorable pug. She received her AB in mathematics from the College of the Holy Cross, spent a year in the Visiting Students Programme at St. Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford, and earned a PhD in Applied Mathematics from Brown University. She's still a Sox fan, still ergs at the gym, and still enjoys comedy - but she'll also happily discuss the New York Liberty or the Love Island multiverse. C. Brandon Ogbunu is a Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, and an Assistant Professor at Yale University. His research focuses on evolutionary genetics and the ecology of disease. A New York City native, Brandon enjoys film, hip-hop, jazz and science fiction. He's an ex-very mediocre light heavy weight boxer, and slightly less mediocre experimental virologist. He has higher hopes for humanity than he does the New York Knicks. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Napheesa Collier is Unrivaled. Even with an ever-growing list of accomplishments - NCAA champion, four-time WNBA All-Star, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist - Napheesa shares with Dan that her greatest achievement will always be becoming a mother. Napheesa doesn't shy away from revealing the doubts she had about resuming her playing career after pregnancy, fears of an early retirement, and why she was so determined to create an empowering women's basketball league with her fellow UConn Huskies champion, Breanna Stewart. Napheesa also doesn't mince words on how her Minnesota Lynx's controversial loss to the New York Liberty in last year's WNBA Finals has her mentally stronger and feeling "super greedy" about adding to her accomplishments. We got a jam packed episode today as Bomani Jones kicks things off by recapping Week 7 of the NFL. He talks about the very competitive NFC North featuring his Detroit Lions, Patrick Mahomes truck stick, and Aaron Rodgers taking yet another L this week. (1:50) From there he transitions to the Cleveland Browns who lost their 6th game of the season, along with Deshaun Watson who officially tore his achilles. Bomani discusses the media discourse surrounding the fans who booed him on the field after he got hurt and the players who have defended him in their post game press conferences. (15:27) Then we move along to the WNBA coming off the New York Liberty winning their first ever championship. Bomani breaks down why having a game with real stakes makes it entertaining regardless of the product on the court and why having a coach go off in their post game presser ,regarding a blown call, is one of the reasons why we love sports. (25:34) And finally, another round of If You Haven't Heard stories and your voicemails on what kind of people you shouldn't fight.
