Josh Turek knows how to win. A U.S. Senate candidate, current Iowa State Legislator, and two-time Paralympic gold medalist for Team USA, Josh joins Andrew Vontz & Jonathan Kaplan on United States of Sweat presented by Choose the Hard Way. This is the show where politicians and policymakers share stories about fitness, health and the sports they love playing.  Josh has faced adversity his entire life. Born with Spina Bifida after his dad was exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam, he overcame 21 surgeries by the age of 12. Later he was cut from the Team USA wheelchair basketball squad six times.  Relentless in his training and as a top professional wheelchair basketball player, Josh kept coming back.  He finally made the team and went on to represent the U.S. at four Para-Olympics where he won two gold medals. After his basketball career ended with a gold medal in Tokyo in 2021, Josh campaigned to represent his hometown of Council Bluffs in the state legislature.  Competing in a district that Donald Trump won twice, Josh pushed his chair up hills and crawled up stairs to talk to Iowans of all political stripes, eventually winning his first race by six votes.  He was re-elected by a five-point margin at the same time Trump was winning the seat by eight points, not only because of his work ethic but because he's developed a reputation as a common-sense, bipartisan legislator. --------- Jonathan Kaplan is the founder of WRITE CADENCE STRATEGIES, helping individuals and organizations navigate Washington, shape policy and manage reputational risk. Tamara Inoue is in her 10th year at the helm of the UC Irvine women's basketball program in 2025-26. After taking over a team that had two winning seasons in 15 years, Inoue brought a renewed energy and mindset that paid off immediately. In her first year with her own recruits, the Anteaters had the second best turnaround in all of NCAA Division I. Since then, they have won a Big West tournament and regular season title, produced five 20-win campaigns and made four national postseason tournament appearances.Last season, Inoue became the all-time winningest head coach in UCI women's basketball history. She eclipsed the school record with her 159th victory on February 27. The Anteaters went on to secure their fourth-straight 20-win campaign (21-10), finished second in the Big West standings (15-5), and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the fifth time in her nine seasons. For the third-straight year, UC Irvine was ranked among the top-15 in the nation in scoring defense as they finished 10th at 54.3 points allowed per game. Déja Lee and Hunter Hernandez claimed two of the six spots on the All-Big West First Team, while Summah Hanson was named the Best Sixth Player. In 2023-24, Inoue's squad won the program's second Big West Championship and first in 29 years. The ‘Eaters earned a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and closed out the campaign with a 23-9 overall record (16-4 Big West). For the second year in a row, UCI was ranked in the final College Insider Women's Mid-Major Poll (23rd) and was among the nation's best in scoring defense (14th, 55.7 ppg). Déja Lee made history as UC Irvine's first Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Year. Moulayna Johnson Sidi Baba was also named the Big West Newcomer of the Year, while Diaba Konate was tabbed the league's Best Defensive Player.Inoue came to Irvine from New Mexico State where she was an integral member of the women's basketball staff from 2011-16. She spent her last two seasons as an associate head coach and also served as the interim Senior Woman Administrator in 2015-16.During her tenure as an associate head coach, NM State made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, while capturing the Western Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles both years. The Aggies ended the 2015-16 campaign with a 26-5 overall record, tying the school record for single-season victories.Inoue joined the New Mexico State staff after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Santa Clara University. Prior to that, she spent six years playing and coaching in Australia. Inoue's professional playing career was cut short due to injury, but following rehabilitation she returned to coach in Australia's Victorian Basketball League (VBL). Inoue earned VBL Coach of the Year honors in 2006-07 with the Nunawading Spectres. She also guided the Knox Raiders to a national championship the following season with a 27-1 record. In addition to her head coaching duties, Inoue helped run the Melbourne Roos club team, assisting in developing several NCAA Division I athletes who went on to play in the U.S.Inoue has strong ties to the Orange County area and The Big West as she attended Laguna Hills High School and Long Beach State. She played at LBSU from 2000-02, where she was a two-time All-Big West honorable mention selection and led the league in assists as a senior (5.9 apg). In her first year, Inoue helped the Beach advance to the third round of the 2000 Women's National Invitation Tournament. She went on to graduate with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2002.Inoue prepped at Laguna Hills High School, and was inducted into the Hawks' Hall of Fame in January 2017. She was a USA Today honorable mention All-American as a senior after averaging 14.0 points per game. A two-time league MVP, Inoue set single-game school records for points (30), assists (12) and steals (12).

Ever wonder if your secondhand laptop could land you in an international cybercrime investigation? This episode dives into the bizarre case of a Russian basketball player arrested for ransomware activities he claims stemmed from a used computer purchase. Was he an unwitting victim or a sophisticated criminal? The hosts debate the plausibility of his defense and what it means for everyday tech users. The conversation takes a darker turn when exploring Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok, which began calling itself "MechaHitler" and spewing hate speech before shutting down entirely. This spectacular AI failure raises profound questions about content moderation, algorithmic bias, and Musk's troubling assertion that he plans to "rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge." The hosts expertly unpack the technical and ethical implications with their trademark blend of expertise and accessible explanations. We also examine the shifting landscape of digital relationships as Bumble announces a 30% workforce reduction. Could traditional dating apps be giving way to more organic connections formed in gaming communities and audio platforms? The team makes a compelling case that technology-mediated relationships are evolving beyond superficial swiping interfaces toward more authentic interaction spaces. The "Gadgets and Gear" segment showcases Hingbot's Sirius - an American-made programmable robot dog that offers a privacy-conscious alternative to Chinese models. Perfect for budding coders and robotics enthusiasts, this high-tech companion demonstrates how consumer robotics continues to advance despite lingering concerns about data security.Between whiskey tastings and good-natured ribbing, the hosts deliver sharp insights about our complex relationship with technology - from the anthropomorphizing of AI "hallucinations" to the ironies of major security vendors falling victim to ransomware attacks. From time to time I am contacted by someone who says they have an interesting and thought provoking guest who would be perfect for Unstoppable Mindset. Such was the case when I was contacted about our guest this time, Dre Baldwin. Dre and I had an initial conversation and I invited him to appear as a guest. I must say that he more than exceeded my expectations. And now he is back for a second time with us with more stories and insights.   You may recall from my first episode with him that Dre grew up in Philadelphia. He wanted to do something with sports and tried out various options until he discovered Basketball in high school. While he wasn't considered overly exceptional and only played one year in high school he realized that Basketball was the sport for him.   Dre went to Penn State and played all four of his college years. Again, while he played consistently and reasonably well, he was not noticed and after college he was not signed to a professional team. He worked at a couple of jobs for a time and then decided to try to get noticed for basketball by going to a camp where he could be seen by scouts and where he could prove he had the talent to make basketball a profession. As he will tell us, eventually he did get a contract to play professionally. Other things happened along the way as you will hear. Dre discovered Youtube and the internet and began posting basketball tips which became popular.   In this episode we continue to discuss with Dre the lessons he wishes to convey as well as his life philosophy. Dre discuss more about the value and need for personal initiative. He tells us the value of having a personal initiative mindset and how that can lead to high performance.   I asked Dre about how playing basketball prepared him for his work in business. His answer will surprise you. It did me. As he points out, his business preparation came earlier and in different ways than playing basketball.   I also asked Dre why he left playing professional basketball. Again, his answer is fascinating. I will leave that for Dre to tell you.   I hope you enjoy my talk with Dre as much as I. Dre Baldwin provided many lessons we all can use. Who knows? Dre, you and I may talk again. Stay tuned.       About the Guest:   As CEO and Founder of Work On Your Game Inc., Dre Baldwin has given 4 TEDxTalks on Discipline, Confidence, Mental Toughness & Personal Initiative and has authored 35 books. He has appeared in national campaigns with Nike, Finish Line, Wendy's, Gatorade, Buick, Wilson Sports, STASH Investments and DIME magazine.    Dre has published over 8,000 videos to 142,000+ subscribers, his content being consumed over 103 million times.    Dre's daily Work On Your Game MasterClass has amassed over 2,900 episodes and more than 7.3 million downloads.    In just 5 years, Dre went from the end of his high school team's bench to a 9-year professional basketball career. He played in 8 countries including Lithuania, Germany, Montenegro, Slovakia and Germany.    Dre invented his Work On Your Game framework as a "roadmap in reverse" to help professionals with High Performance, Consistency and Results.    A Philadelphia native, Dre lives in Miami.   Ways to connect Dre:   http://Instagram.com/DreBaldwin http://YouTube.com/Dreupt https://www.facebook.com/WorkOnYourGameUniversity http://LinkedIn.com/in/DreAllDay http://X.com/DreAllDay http://TikTok.com/WorkOnYourGame   Kindly use this link for our Free book, The Third Day
