This week, Larry Smith joins the Idiots. 00:00 Introductions 02:25 Life Coaches 13:39 Cults 27:35 Trump vs. Biden 34:02 Gordon Black —The Idiots do a little victim blaming, because my God… Why would you ever hire a “Life Coach” to tell you what to do? A completely untrained, unregulated nitwit with no special skills who gladly takes as much of your money as you're willing to give. Even better, a life coach can be someone who failed out of (or was fired from) another profession: therapy. (Note: therapists are a favorite topic for Jake, so we linger here a wile.) Anyway, Jodi Hildebrandt was an Utah-based therapist who felt to constrained by all the rules and regulations Big Gubment held over her, so she became a life coach. Currently in prison after being convicted of abusing two children, she bilked people like Ethan Prete out of thousands of dollars. Thing is, if you're dumb enough to listen to an un-credentialed Life Coach, ya kinda deserve to lose your money. Chances are, you weren't going to do anything smart with it anyway. —Without meaning to, the Idiots segue into people so bereft of common sense, they join a cult. Jake begins by bringing up Dancing for the Devil, the new documentary on Netflix that covers a TikTok trend, and then it moves to David Koresh and the Branch Davidians in Waco, and MAGA Trumpers. Following that, R. Derek Black is discussed, because of the wonderful prank she played on her racist father. (Spoiler alert, her dad is Don Black, founder of Stormfront, the hate-site visited by intellectually-challenged mouth-breathers, and she was born he, and transitioned.) Side note: Hawk Tuah girl Katie Vickers is discussed in this segment. —Democrats are in the upcoming election to lose it. Instead of hammering home solid talking points, they're spending $50 million on an advertising campaign to tell people Donald J. Trump is a convicted felon. Which, as we all know, is something no one cares about. At all. Sure, they could hammer home his Supreme Court picks, three liars who said they believe in Roe v. Wade, or the border crisis Republicans are fueling, as they didn't vote on the legislation they wrote, but why try that? —Injustice moves fast in Russia. A few weeks ago, the Idiots discussed Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, a United States solider who was in an… “interesting” (read contentious) relationship with a Russian woman. Black followed her to Russia, where, OF COURSE he was arrested. Well, he was tried and thrown in jail, because who could have ever seen this happening, except everyone. Hey, here's an idea: don't go to Russia. Anyone. Especially U.S. soldiers. Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to. Tune in and get your giggle on. An American soldier is being held by Russian authorities on charges of criminal misconduct, Army officials confirmed Monday. The Associated Press cited U.S. officials who said the soldier, Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, was stationed in South Korea and was in the process of returning home to Fort Cavazos in Texas. Instead, officials said Black, who is married, traveled to Russia to see a longtime girlfriend and was accused of theft. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel details, according to The Associated Press. In a statement, Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said the service member was arrested on May 2 by Russian authorities in Vladivostok. She did not provide any information about the soldier's identity or reasons for being in Russia. “The Russian Federation notified the U.S. Department of State of the criminal detention in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations,” she said. “The Army notified his family and the U.S. Department of State is providing appropriate consular support to the soldier in Russia.” The Associated Press reported the Russian woman had lived in South Korea, and last fall she and Black got into some type of domestic dispute or altercation, according to officials. After that, she left South Korea. It isn't clear if she was forced to leave or what, if any, role Korean authorities had in the matter. You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. For the next round of The Spectator's Economic Innovator of the Year Awards sponsored by Investec, we met in Leeds at the Dakota hotel and restaurant. For the Yorkshire and Northeast region, three finalists joined us for lunch — out of a record total of 176 entries across the whole of the UK — to pitch their ventures to our distinguished panel of judges. The finalists you'll hear about on this podcast are: Testcard, in the healthcare sector; MudDaddy, a portable dog shower and Tofooco. After lunch, we also met Powersheds via Zoom who couldn't make it to the pitching lunch. The judges were Gordon Black, venture capitalist and former manufacturer; Caroline Theobald, entrepreneur and chair of the Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University. Finally from our sponsors Investec; Dan Sheahan, Michelle White and Rowena Huston. The judges faced the tough task of comparing businesses in very different sectors and stages of development. But all four made compelling pitches – and the variety of entries is part of the fun of these Awards. We hope all the companies we meet gain from the networking opportunities, benefit from the accolade of being selected as finalists and enjoy the buzz, the conversation and the lunch. We hope Spectator readers and podcast listeners also enjoy following the search for this year's ultimate winners – and will take a few minutes to explore the finalists' websites and products. More Economic innovator of the Year Awards podcasts coming shortly!
Our venue for the Yorkshire & North East regional final was the former Leeds Club — where the entrepreneurs of the region's textile and other manufacturing industries would once have congregated. We welcomed back guest judges Caroline Theobald, a leading promoter of entrepreneurship in Newcastle and the North East, and Gordon Black, a venture capitalist and former manufacturer from West Yorkshire — plus a trio of Charles Stanley's Leeds representatives. Our four finalists were all in cutting-edge technologies: Honcho in online vehicle insurance; Testcard in easy-access patient testing for healthcare; Element 2 in hydrogen power for truck and bus fleets; and Micropore in pharm manufacturing. Again, a near-impossible choice but a terrific conversation — and a range of entries from a geographical spread that tells us entrepreneurship is alive and well in the UK provinces.

The Spectator and Julius Baer have come together once again to celebrate creative entrepreneurship across the UK. On this podcast, The Spectator's business columnist Martin Vander Weyer talks to a panel of high profile judges from the business world about the finalists in the Midlands and the North East - from desks made out of honeycomb paper to batteries that can sustain entire fleets of electric buses. Our guest judges on this occasion were all veterans of these Awards. Representing Julius Baer was Martin Cuthbert, head of region for the North East.
Gordon Black is the man behind best-selling food craze the Nutribullet - and the richest retail tycoon you've never heard of. He also discusses how he identifies the next big retail craze - from multivitamins to Adidas bags - and how he gets into the market before anyone else.
Don’t think of it as poor audio quality, think of it as edge, raw, and authentic. Gordon Black is using an online roller that fudges all of his rolls to be really high unless he has fortune in which case it always makes the first roll a one so that he can’t possibly believe he […]
