EPISODE 144 | Unwell and Unregulated: The Militia Movement The United States has always had a certain comfort level with violence, or at least the idea of it. Throughout its history, groups of armed citizens will threaten to use, or actually use, force to get their point across, either to effect change or to prevent that from happening. But in the 1990s, something changed, and groups formed around new ideologies that sometimes had little to do with objective reality. The Militia Movement was mainly rural, white, far-right Christians who'd been nurtured on conspiracy theories and half truths which they had chosen to believe because these made some sort of emotional sense to them, and because they had an unerring sense that they were right and everyone else was wrong. And some of them were willing to go to great lengths to achieve their aims. This is the breeding ground for the modern conspirasphere. Like what we do? Are you in a cult? Are you sure? Are you really sure? According to guest Jane Borden, our entire country was founded by a doomsday cult, the Puritans. Aaaaand if that didn't get your curiousity piqued for this latest episode of the podcast, then I don't know what will! In the latest episode of The DTALKS Podcast, Joe and Jane get into a conversation about the definition of a cult, some of the earliest examples, and how the world around us uses "Us vs Them" logic to drive people further and further apart. It's a startling realization in an age where everything seeks to divide us. It's a great episode that you won't want to miss, enjoy! About Jane Borden Jane Borden is an author, culture journalist, and editor. She contributes regularly to Vanity Fair, and has written for the New York Times Magazine and The Washington Post, among other outlets. Her book Cults Like US: Why Doomsday Thinking Drives America will be published in March 2025 by One Signal Publishers. Her first book, I Totally Meant to Do That, was published by Crown. Before all of that, she was a culture editor at Time Out New York. She is also a professional editor, book coach, and ghost writer. Jane lives in Los Angeles. About 'Cults Like Us' This colorful and enlightening pop history explains why the eccentric doomsday beliefs of our Puritan founders still drive American culture today, contextualizes the current rise in far-right extremism as a natural result of our latent indoctrination, and proposes the United States is the largest cult of all. Since the Mayflower sidled up near Plymouth Rock, cult ideology has been ingrained in the DNA of the United States. In this eye-opening book, journalist Jane Borden argues that Puritan doomsday belief never went away; it just went secular and became American culture. From our fascination with cowboys and superheroes to our allegiance to influencers and self-help, susceptibility to advertising, and undying devotion to the almighty dollar, Americans remain particularly vulnerable to a specific brand of cult-like thinking. With in-depth research and compelling insight, Borden uncovers the American history you didn't learn in school, including how we are still being brainwashed, making us a nation of easy marks for con artists and strong men. Along the way, she also revisits some of the most infamous cults in this country—including, the Branch Davidians and Love Has Won, presenting them—as integral parts of our national psyche rather than as aberrations. Nearly twenty years after they happened, the ATF and FBI assaults on the Branch Davidian residence near Waco, Texas remain the most deadly law enforcement action on American soil. The raid by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents on February 28, 1993, which resulted in the deaths of four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians, precipitated a 51-day siege conducted by the FBI. The FBI tank and gas assault on the residence at Mount Carmel Center on April 19 culminated in a fire that killed 53 adults and 23 children, with only nine survivors. In A Journey to Waco, survivor Clive Doyle not only takes readers inside the tragic fire and its aftermath, but he also tells the larger story of how and why he joined the Branch Davidians, how the Branch Davidian community developed, and the status of survivors. While the media and official reports painted one picture of the Branch Davidians and the two assaults, A Journey to Waco shares a much more personal account of the ATF raid, the siege, and the final assault that details events unreported by the media. A Journey to Waco presents what the Branch Davidians believed and introduces readers to the community's members, including David Koresh. A Journey to Waco is a personal account of one man's journey with the Branch Davidians, through the tragic fire, and beyond.https://amzn.to/4kztvoBBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

"51 Days of Hell"What really happened at Waco? For 51 days, the world watched as a religious compound became a war zone, ending in a catastrophic inferno that killed 76 people – including 25 children. But the official story is a lie. This is the explosive exposé of how a botched ATF raid became a government massacre, featuring suppressed evidence, deleted recordings, and testimonies that were buried for decades. David Koresh wasn't just a cult leader – he was the target of a federal operation gone horribly wrong, where cover-ups mattered more than innocent lives. We'll reveal the shocking truth behind the initial raid that started the siege, the military-grade psychological warfare used against families trapped inside, and the horrifying final assault that turned the compound into a crematorium. Featuring leaked audio of FBI commanders arguing about using incendiary devices, suppressed autopsy reports showing execution-style gunshot wounds, and exclusive interviews with survivors who witnessed the government's lies firsthand. This episode exposes classified documents that prove federal agents fired first, the deliberate destruction of evidence that could have saved lives, and why powerful people spent millions to bury the truth. Sometimes the real criminals wear badges and carry federal warrants.
In the riveting second installment of "No Way, Jose!", host Jose Galison continues to unravel Dr. Wendy Painting's groundbreaking research into the Oklahoma City Bombing, focusing on Richard Van Hazel's explosive claims about Timothy McVeigh's attendance at a paramilitary training camp in Texas. This episode delves into the eerie corroboration of Van Hazel's assertions by PATCON informant John Matthews, who years later reported similar activities, with his FBI handler Don Jarrett privy to these details. The discussion uncovers a tangled web of connections between the Texas paramilitary training scene, the Aryan Nations, and individuals tied to this extremist group, some of whom played a role in harboring a fugitive Branch Davidian. This fugitive, wittingly or not, intersected with a network of international arms dealers closely linked to Roger Moore, raising unsettling questions about the broader ecosystem surrounding the OKC bombing plot.Part Two also explores the Arizona connections, spotlighting ties between Elohim City, Dennis Mahon, and individuals in the state, further anchoring the narrative in the shadowy world of 1990s far-right networks. Jose Galison navigates these intricate links with Dr. Painting's meticulous research as a guide, peeling back layers of previously overlooked evidence. From paramilitary camps to international arms dealings, "NWJ 546" delivers a compelling continuation of the investigation, challenging conventional narratives about the Murrah Building bombing. Rick Welch speaks at Eric and Karen Ogea's home fellowship in Azle, Texas last Palm Sunday. He brings a view to the Sermon on the Mount, typically seen as a lesson on moral ethics, and breaks down what is actually going on. It is a covenant indictment on Old Covenant Israel, and the injection of the New Covenant explaining what it looks like. All of this was done on what Rick states is "the edge of an eschatological knife". This is a fresh look at The Sermon on the Mount through the lens of eschatology. Clive Doyle - A Journey to Waco: Autobiography of a Branch Davidian Nearly twenty years after they happened, the ATF and FBI assaults on the Branch Davidian residence near Waco, Texas remain the most deadly law enforcement action on American soil. A Journey to Waco is a personal account of one man's journey with the Branch Davidians, through the tragic fire, and beyond.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Hate American Made ////// Waco Siege Part 4 of 6 www.TrueCrimeGarage.com The Waco siege began on February 28, 1993, when the ATF raided Mount Carmel Center. The ensuing gun battle resulted in the deaths of four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians. This chaos kicked off a 51 day standoff that ended in the deaths of many of the Branch Davidians including women, children, and leader David Koresh. Be good, be kind, and don't litter.
Hate American Made ////// The Prophet Part 3 of 6 www.TrueCrimeGarage.com In 1983 David Koresh formally Vernon Wayne Howell claimed to possess the power of prophecy. This would spearhead his accent to leadership of a Texas religious group known as the Branch Davidians. The Branch Davidians were a splinter group of the Davidian Seventh Day Adventists. Koresh prophesied that his martyrdom would take place in the United States. Thanks for listening, thanks for telling a friend.

What Happened to the News Reporting, Plus ATF Raid In Waco and More? Parole Board Bombshell, and the State of Journalism. What happened to investigative journalism? That's a question that continues to resonate as modern newsrooms struggle under financial constraints and shifting priorities. Legendary investigative journalist Robert Riggs believes this critical form of journalism is fading fast in the U.S. His thoughts on this topic, paired with his groundbreaking coverage of the 1993 ATF raid in Waco and the corruption scandal involving the Texas Parole Board, highlight how far news reporting has evolved—and why it matters. Check out and follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. Robert Riggs a semi-retired Investigative Journalist and host of the True Crime Reporter® Podcast is our guest. Listen to the interview with Robert as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show website, also available on Apple, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The Decline of Investigative Journalism Investigative journalism, often called "watchdog reporting," requires time, resources, and a commitment to exposing wrongdoing. Unfortunately, the financial realities of today's media landscape have made this increasingly rare. Riggs points to the rise of legal fears and the preference for sensational opinion pieces as the death knell for many American news outlets' investigative efforts. Traditionally spearheaded by newspapers and freelancers, investigative work is expensive and time-consuming. With the decline in advertising revenue, many outlets have cut back, leaving only nonprofit organizations like ProPublica or international collaborations (e.g., the Panama Papers) to fill the gap. This lack of funding has diminished the public's access to deeply researched, fact-based stories. What Happened to the News Reporting? Look for more stories about this in platforms like Medium and Newsbreak. Riggs on the ATF Raid in Waco: A Journalist's Perspective Few events showcase the power of investigative journalism better than the 1993 ATF raid on the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas. Robert Riggs was on the ground, covering the harrowing 51-day siege that ended in tragedy with a fiery explosion and the deaths of nearly 80 people, including 22 children. The raid began on February 28, 1993, when 70 agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) attempted to serve search and arrest warrants. They were met with gunfire from inside the compound, reportedly involving illegal machine guns. The resulting two-hour gun battle left four federal agents and six Davidians dead, with many others wounded. The interview with here is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show, which is available as a free podcast on their website on platforms like Apple, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. The cult's leader, David Koresh, claimed to be the spiritual heir to King David and preached apocalyptic visions based on the Book of Revelation. As Riggs reported during the siege, the buildup of weapons and Koresh's radical teachings created a volatile situation that drew national attention. Riggs' coverage stood out for its depth, earning him accolades and cementing his reputation as one of journalism's finest. What Happened to the News Reporting, Plus ATF Raid In Waco and More? Keep informed by following the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest, Newsbreak, Medium and other social media platforms. Exposing the Parole Board Bombshell Investigative journalism's importance is further exemplified in Riggs' exposé of corruption within the Texas Parole Board. His reporting uncovered a shocking process where favors—including luxury cars for board members—facilitated the release of dangerous criminals like Kenneth McDuff. McDuff, a former death row inmate, was paroled under a cloud of corruption. Riggs revealed how this system jeopardized public safety, ultimately prompting reforms in Texas' parole system. Riggs' tenacity earned him the George Foster Peabody Award for investigative reporting and national recognition for his fearless pursuit of truth. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show, which is available as a free podcast on their website on platforms like Apple, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. Why Podcasts Are Filling the Gap In an era where traditional journalism is struggling, platforms like "True Crime Reporter® Podcast" and the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcas are stepping in to provide audiences with detailed, immersive storytelling. What Happened to the News Reporting? Social media outlets like Facebook and Instagram also amplify the story, bringing it to a new generation. The rise of podcasts as a medium reflects the public's hunger for authentic, in-depth reporting. Recognized with a Webby Award for Best True Crime Podcast, Riggs' work demonstrates that while traditional investigative journalism may be waning, its principles can thrive in new formats. Platforms like the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, Apple Podcasts and Spotify make these stories more accessible, allowing listeners to become informed and vigilant. How Big Tech Platforms Are Changing the Media Landscape Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Apple, and Spotify are reshaping how people consume news and entertainment. For Riggs, this shift presents both challenges and opportunities. While these platforms offer unprecedented reach for podcasts and independent creators, they also contribute to the decline of traditional outlets by monopolizing advertising revenue. Social media algorithms prioritize engagement over accuracy, amplifying sensationalism and misinformation. Riggs uses his extensive archive of reporters' notebooks to craft narratives that are as educational as they are engaging. What Happened to the News Reporting, Plus ATF Raid In Waco and More? Be sure to follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsbreak, Medium and most all social media platforms. The Future of Investigative Journalism Despite its challenges, investigative journalism remains crucial for democracy and accountability. Riggs' body of work serves as a reminder of the impact journalists can have when given the resources and freedom to dig deep. From Waco's fiery conclusion to the murky dealings of the Texas Parole Board, these stories emphasize the enduring need for fearless reporting. The basis of the celebrated Paramount Network miniseries starring Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch--Waco is the critically-acclaimed, first person account of the siege by Branch Davidian survivor, David Thibodeau.Twenty-five years ago, the FBI staged a deadly raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. Texas. David Thibodeau survived to tell the story. When he first met the man who called himself David Koresh, David Thibodeau was a drummer in a local a rock band. Though he had never been religious in the slightest, Thibodeau gradually became a follower and moved to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. He remained there until April 19, 1993, when the compound was stormed and burned to the ground after a 51-day standoff with government authorities. In this compelling account--now with an updated epilogue that revisits remaining survivors--Thibodeau explores why so many people came to believe that Koresh was divinely inspired. We meet the men, women, and children of Mt. Carmel. We get inside the day-to-day life of the community. We also understand Thibodeau's brutally honest assessment of the United States government's actions. The result is a memoir that reads like a thriller, with each page taking us closer to the eventual inferno.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
The Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero, Florida is one of the most peculiar historic sites in the American South. This state park showcases the life of Dr. Cyrus Teed, the founder of Koreshanity. Those who joined this religious and scientific movement sought immortality through celibacy and believed the entire universe existed within a giant, hollow sphere. The Koreshan Unity has been dubbed “one of the most bizarre” communal utopian societies organized in the 19th century. They were forced to relocate several times until they found a permanent home in the swamplands of southwest Florida. Want more Southern Mysteries? On this week's episode of the Free Thought Project Podcast, Jason and Matt welcome back one of our most respected and returning guests, Scott Horton, for the third time. Scott is the director of the Libertarian Institute, editorial director of Antiwar.com, and the host of Antiwar Radio on Pacifica, 90.7 FM KPFK in Los Angeles, California. He's also a prolific author with several must-read books, including Enough Already: Time to End the War on Terrorism and Fool's Errand: Time to End the War in Afghanistan. His work is pivotal in educating and mobilizing countless individuals in the pursuit of peace and liberty. In this episode, we commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the Ruby Ridge standoff—a dark chapter in American history where the government unleashed deadly force on a family simply trying to live off the grid. Scott gives us a detailed history of the event, followed by an exploration of how Ruby Ridge became the blueprint for the Waco siege and the tragedy of the Branch Davidians. But Scott doesn't stop there—he ties these historical events into a broader narrative, showing how the government has perfected its playbook of turning ordinary Americans into "domestic terrorists" through propaganda and setups. From there, Scott connects the dots between these domestic tragedies and American foreign policy. He draws chilling parallels between the state's tactics at Ruby Ridge and Waco and the actions of Israel in Gaza, where he argues that the Israeli government carries out the equivalent of 20 Ruby Ridges a day. Scott paints a vivid picture of how the military-industrial complex employs this same playbook of deception and violence across the globe to provoke and perpetuate foreign conflicts. This episode is a sobering yet enlightening discussion that ties together historical events, current policies, and global conflicts, all through the lens of state violence and propaganda.
