This week on the Raw Politics podcast: Is the Minister of the Week, Paul Goldsmith, an ideologue? Plus, awkward business closures for the coalition and Chris Hipkins' leadership.Newsroom senior political reporter Marc Daalder, Newsroom Pro managing editor Jonathan Milne and co-editor Tim Murphy discuss the minister's harder line push this week on laws cracking down on gangs, changing his mind to allow police to search private homes for evidence of patches. We ask if he is a natural anti-crime hardman or if he's being egged on by the fringe parties in the coalition and is enjoying their approval. The Waitangi Tribunal report on the Government's planned amendments to the Marine and Coastal Areas (Takutai Moana) Act would have shamed any other minister at any other time, but its criticisms of Goldsmith for his motivation, facts, process, consultation and evidence have been ignored by the Government. The panel discusses the latest industrial closure, of the Oji mill at Penrose, and how these kinds of events can unfairly, or fairly, lie at the feet of an incumbent government.  Could the coalition have done more to save jobs here and in earlier regional closures, and would a Labour government have done anything differently? Our reader question asks if Chris Hipkins is taking a risk heading to the UK for that country's Labour Party conference when a poll shows his personal rating plummeting for preferred Prime Minister.  The panel is unmoved, despite Government MPs delighting in teasing Labour's caucus this week about a coup. Finally, the panelists recommend something to read, listen to or watch on the weekend ahead.--------------------This week's recommendations:Marc: Our own Jonathan Milne's piece at Newsroom delving into a major fisheries Treaty case brewing in the backgroundTim: Audrey Young's timely explainer on all the Government's law changes targeted at things MāoriJonathan: The Economist reports on a British Medical Journal study on why Australians live so long.--------------------Raw Politics will be available every Friday, and you can watch it on YouTube too.Read more on newsroom.co.nz.

The UK economy looks likely to slowly slip between the waves, as multiple headwinds combine to contribute to a recession which may arrive by the end of the next quarter. Activity, particularly in the services sector, is expected to drop into contraction, while the actions of the Bank of England at its next meeting, which takes place next week, could be the final straw. Any delay in hiking rates again, would mean that Andrew Bailey would probably be accused of ignoring his duty. Questions are being asked about the ability of the Prime Minister to remain in power, as rebels within his own party appear to be lining up to challenge. The Chairman of the Parliamentary Conservative Party will need to receive 54 letters or emails from Government MPs demanding a vote of confidence, in order for such a ballot to take place. in order to force a vote of confidence. Battle lines are already being drawn, with rebel MPs calling on Boris Johnson to resign to avoid the ignominy both personally and for the Government of their leader being forced from power. "Although there have been a few Government MPs who have stated their intention to write letters of no confidence in Boris Johnson's leadership, the open revolt that was feared has not, so far, materialized. Johnson faced another fiery Prime Minister's Questions in Parliament yesterday but appears to be weathering the storm with tenacity. Policy investigations into several events held in Downing Street are ongoing, and the full version of Sue Gray's report is yet to be seen, but it is now possible that this story may now be overtaken by the next drama with the Prime Minister injured but not fatally so. To move on from Partygate, the Minister for Levelling up, Michael Gove, announced the release of the Government's plans to ensure investment is more evenly distributed. A cynic would no doubt agree that the best way to move on from a scandal is to make promises of greater investment " Beyond Currency Market Commentary: Aims to provide deep insights into the political and economic events worldwide that can cause currencies to change and how this can affect your FX Exposure.

"Having made his second apology to the House of Commons in a week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's future is still far from certain. A number of Government MPs are still considering whether to write letters of no confidence, which are a prerequisite to a vote on his future. With a General Election still two years away, all the pressure on Johnson comes from within his own Party, with opposition calls for him to resign little more than hot air. While the political pot continues to simmer, the economy continues to improve. Data released yesterday shows that manufacturing output continues to improve. While this sector only contributes to 20% of the country's GDP, it is a major employer. The effect of the Omicron Variant has been shrugged off while global supply chains continue to improve. Apologies for subjecting you to another short-term letting vent, but after last week's state government schemozzle when the new holiday rental regulations were announced, then shelved, we thought we’d better have a look at what was going on. And it turns out it was a case of history repeating itself.  Remember a couple of years ago when the then Planning Minister Anthony Roberts and former Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean were about to announce new NSW short-term letting regulations that would basically have handed the whole box and dice to Airbnb-style hosts on a plate? The microphones were plugged in, the TV cameras lights were at full dazzle, and then right at the last minute a couple of Government MPs realised that residential rentals across the state were about to be handed wholesale to a bunch of American “disruptors” with few if any comeback or restraints. Listen Here Suddenly it was mikes off, lights out and “don’t call us, we’ll call you”. Well, something similar happened last week, only the announcement of what would probably have been the toughest short-term letting regulations in Australia was made and then three days later they were shelved until November What happened? Surely it wasn't just that holiday rental giants Stayz and apartment owner advocates OCN both complained bitterly, was it? Listen to the podcast for our somewhat cynical insight into the whole farrago. Also we look at Mascot Towers, two years down the track, the massive financial losses apartment owners face and what we think the government should do. And Sue visits West Australia where property is going through the roof in a state that almost defines the phrase "boom and bust". That’s all in this week’s Flat Chat Wrap. Transcript in full Jimmy  0:00  Wow, what a week; double whammy! No sooner had we published last week's podcast, all about the new Airbnb or short-term letting regulations, then the government did a U -turn. Sue  0:14  Yeah, they were obviously listening to you, Jimmy and thought, 'wow, we realize there's so many problems with it.' Jimmy  0:20  Then I've looked on the internet and discovered that you couldn't actually hear the podcast anyway. We had about 11 listeners and then you were away; you were in Perth? Sue  0:31  Yes, I was. Jimmy  0:32  So, I couldn't re-record. Sue  0:34  But you managed to sort it out. Jimmy  0:35  Kind of, yes and here we are today. We're going to talk about why we think the government changed its mind. We're going to talk about Mascot Towers; the latest on that. And, we're going to talk about a massive projected increase in house prices in WA. Sue  0:53  A sign of my dedication, going over there to check it out for you. Jimmy  0:56  Absolutely, going round all the real estate agent windows, taking notes. I'm Jimmy Thomson, I write the Flat Chat column for the Australian Financial Review. Sue  1:08  And I'm Sue Williams and I write about property for Domain. Jimmy  1:11  And this is the Flat Chat Wrap. So, that was a pretty sudden turnaround by the government on short-term letting. I mean, they released it on Friday afternoon, a week ago. 'Take the trash out day' (they call it on the West Wing here, where you get rid of all the stories that you don't want  to have too much coverage in the weekend papers, in the hope that they'll all be forgotten about, come Monday). The Owners Corporation Network got really upset about some of the provisions. The Stayz people (I think they're owned by Expedia), got very, very, very upset and Airbnb stayed very, very, very quiet. Sue  2:07  Who knows what they think? Jimmy  2:08  I think we know what they think. Then suddenly, the planning minister came out and said in the interest of conciliation and fairness and giving everyone a chance to adjust to the plans, they were putting them off until November. Sue  2:22
