It's different from our past ones because in this one, we picked out all the advice in a step-by-step, chronological manner that would best help you get your artistic career started. We begin with tips about the importance of creating good work, finding a mentor to help you improve, continuous practice, and above all, painting what you love and what matters most to you. Then we move on to the importance of living below your means and having good financial support such as getting a day-job to help support you as you learn to paint and build your portfolio. Once you've built up a good repertoire of work, you can join communities, build your network, apply to exhibitions, and consider reaching out to galleries. Just as important, of course, is making sure you have a beautiful website, social media channels to upload your work, and continue to build relationships with fellow artists. Finally, our past guests remind us of the importance of treating your craft like a business and also to never forget why you began painting in the first place. We hope this episode can enlighten our listeners and be a guiding light to anyone who wishes to follow the path of the artist!Episodes mentioned on the episode (in order of appearance):74 Arthur Gain142 Grace DeVito92 Blair Atherholt107 Rob Rey40 Susan Lyon64 Oliver Sin47 Eric Armusik96 Brienne Brown118 Shuang Li127 Jill Basham85 Stephanie Birdsall90 Raul Campos123 Michael Orwick94 Karen Blackwood64 Oliver Sin101 Joseph Gyurcsak98 Warren Chang97 Elizabeth Robbins117 Poppy Balser138 Michelle Dunaway127 Jill Basham

The 47th edition of the Powwow will be held Sept. 6 and 7 in Milton. But to bring the event to life again this year, the tribe needed some financial help, turning to the community to deliver $30,000 in needed funding - nearly half coming from a GoFundMe effort. In this edition of Enlighten Me, Delaware Public Media's Abigail Lee sits down with Avery Johnson, the chief of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe, to talk about the 47th annual powwow, the cultural significance of powwows and how community fundraising brought this year's event to the finish line.

Jessica Bartnick, co-founder and CEO of Foundation for C.H.O.I.C.E, joins us to illuminate the power of mentorship in transforming the lives of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. With "CHOICE" meaning "Consider how One Individual Changes Everything," Jessica shares how her organization's mission is deeply personal, inspired by her husband's success as a first-generation college graduate. We explore how the foundation navigates the complexities of the college application process, connecting students with mentors who guide them through a transformative 27-week curriculum. This structured support has led to an impressive 85% graduation rate among participants, flipping the script on dropout statistics that often overshadow students from challenging backgrounds. Step into the world of business integration as we discuss how the Foundation for Choice provides critical exposure to professional environments, forming partnerships with businesses to sustain its impactful work. The stories of Law, a refugee from Burma who triumphed over adversity to earn a full scholarship and pursue a medical career, and Stephen, who leveraged the program to build a successful life in banking, serve as testaments to the foundation's success. As Jessica underscores the vital role of donations in maintaining their work, we invite you to support this life-changing mission by visiting their website and engaging with their social media platforms. NZ on Air has its fingers crossed its financial support of Shortland St won't be forever. New Zealand's longest-running drama's been granted 2.5 million in funding for its 2026 season, to help the show transition to the audience's preference of online viewing. NZ on Air CEO Cam Harland told Heather du Plessis-Allan that they also provided funding last year, but hoped it would assist the show moving to a more financially sustainable place. But he says the economic environment for ad funded media hasn't improved. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After a ten year recording hiatus (sort of), an older and wiser (sort of) Blue Öyster Cult link up with the incredibly normal cyberpunk author John Shirley as their new primary lyricist and the incredibly stable CMC Records as their new label. The result is a very interesting album...that was out of print for decades and even now can't be easily heard due to weird streaming rights, so it's probably not surprising that Heaven Forbid is often overlooked in the BÖC catalog. Thankfully we're here to break it all down! What if becoming a pilot wasn't a dream reserved for the few—but a real career path for young people in underserved communities? In this inspiring conversation, Dana Donati, CEO of Breaking Down Barriers.org, shares how their aviation nonprofit is rewriting the narrative on who gets to fly.Founded by former American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and his wife, Gwen, Breaking Down Barriers takes flight training and mentorship directly into Dallas communities where aviation has historically been out of reach. From first-grade classrooms to community colleges, Dana and her team spark interest in aviation careers early—well before the traditional fork-in-the-road moments of college or military service.Dana explains, “Becoming a pilot is expensive. So sometimes that automatically pushes out the group of people that have the skill, just don't have the financial means.” That's where Breaking Down Barriers steps in—with scholarships, mentorship, and ongoing support that go beyond one-time transactions. Students sign a promise on day one: not just to succeed, but to return and uplift others in their community. In a sector facing a massive talent gap, especially post-pandemic, this model isn't just feel-good—it's workforce development at its finest. Dana outlines how they rotate mentors every three months to give students exposure to multiple professionals and expand their aviation networks—replacing outdated “lifelong mentor” models with something more agile and sustainable. This conversation goes beyond aviation. It becomes a blueprint for how nonprofits can foster generational change by focusing on access, exposure, and reinvestment. From field trips to local airports to connecting aviation with brands kids already know—McDonald's, John Deere, Disney—Dana's team finds innovative ways to plant seeds of possibility. For nonprofits wrestling with how to reach and shape future professionals, Breaking Down Barriers offers more than a flight path—it offers a runway. 00:00:00 Welcome and Introduction 00:01:37 What Breaking Down Barriers Does 00:02:39 Addressing the Pilot Shortage 00:04:08 Aviation Career Pathways Beyond the Military 00:06:27 Identifying and Removing Career Barriers 00:07:58 The Cost Barrier and Financial Support 00:08:32 The Power of Mentorship and Networking 00:10:17 Rotating Mentors to Build Aviation Networks 00:11:47 Strategic Partnerships and Fundraising 00:14:21 Students Pledging to Give Back 00:16:19 Dana's Personal Aviation Origin Story 00:20:24 Capturing and Sharing Student Success Stories 00:22:54 The Role of Workforce Development in Education 00:24:53 How to Inspire Young Students Toward Aviation #TheNonprofitShow #AviationAccess #FutureWorkforce Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

After briefly discussing the first (and somewhat premature in our opinion) live album from BÖC, we discuss their platinum breakthrough smash Agents of Fortune. Yes, it's the album with "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" on it but there's a lot more going on here. But don't worry, we're going to definitively and correctly break the whole thing down and you are going to agree with it all! On the Resilient Birth podcast, Justine and Sarah explore the impact of trauma across the perinatal period, from trying-to-conceive to pregnancy, from childbirth to postpartum and parenting. Through an inspirational quote that drives our weekly conversations about trauma and healing, Justine and Sarah explore topics such as birth trauma, parenting as a survivor, and finding healing with vulnerability and compassion that support birthing people and birth professionals. Each week, listeners leave with takeaways to utilize in their lives and/or clients. Justine and Sarah hold the stories they share with honor and respect with the hope to impart knowledge, increase understanding, and bear witness to this challenging topic. Sarah is a licensed mental health counselor, educator, and mom of three. She walks with a story of trauma from before and as a result of her perinatal experience. Justine supports survivors of trauma through perinatal coaching and childbirth education. As well as being a mother of three, she holds a Ph.D. on representations of consent and sexual violence and is currently working towards a Masters in Counselling. The postpartum experience is often isolating. Support groups for mothers were vital for Justine's mental health. Society often dismisses the struggles of motherhood. Cultural narratives can silence women's experiences. Women are often taught their worth is tied to their bodies. Feminism has not fully addressed the needs of mothers. There is a societal fear of women gathering and sharing their stories. Financial assistance for becoming a parent is inadequate. True support for parents goes beyond financial aid. Community and healthcare access are critical for new parents. The isolation of modern families impacts parenting experiences. Support services for parents are often lacking in the U.S. In this conversation, Justine and Sarah explore the importance of mothers' voices, and the cultural perceptions surrounding women's experiences. They discuss the isolation many mothers feel, the need for support, and how societal narratives often diminish the value of women's experiences. The conversation highlights the power of collective voices and the ongoing challenges women face in being heard and respected in their journeys through motherhood and beyond. In this conversation, Justine Leach and Sarah Adelmann discuss the societal implications of parenthood, the inadequacy of financial support for new parents, and the systemic failures in maternal healthcare. They emphasize the need for community support and the importance of collective voices in advocating for better maternal rights and services. The dialogue highlights the limitations of monetary assistance and calls for a more comprehensive approach to supporting families, particularly in the context of the current political climate. We're back to discuss BÖC's third album Secret Treaties (1974). It's a lot of things: definitely their first gold LP, probably their weirdest, and possibly their most thematically consistent. Inarguably it is a creative triumph for Eric Bloom (while ironically also serving as a creative low point for Buck Dharma). This is a big one, folks. Let's get into it!
