In this episode, Soren interviews independent game developer Brendon Chung, best known for his work on Atom Zombie Smasher, Thirty Flights of Loving, and Quadrilateral Cowboy. They discuss how to make an adventure game inside of Doom, why he won’t read text popups but will read the back of cereal boxes, and what does the ending of Gravity Bone mean.
My guest on today's show is Brendon Chung. Founder of Blendo games and creator of Gravity Bone, Atom Zombie Smasher, Thirty Flights of Loving and the upcoming Quadrilateral Cowboy. Many of Brendon's games have been built using the mod tools from games like Half Life 2 and Doom 3, so the games that Brendon creates and the games that have shaped his life intertwine in fascinating way. Things like Doom, Quake, and Thief are both videogame milestones in his life but also their mod tools form the backbone of the games he makes. We talk about kind uncles, pulling things apart to see how they work, environmental story telling in Doom, making movies about a golf club wielding hitman, being so good at Quake multiplayer that you can echo locate players through the pick ups they collect and how you would really act if you were your character in Fallout 4.

For the sixth installment of Player Vs. Podcast, with the teachings of Bird Jesus and The Keeper fresh in our minds, we dive headlong into the enigma of the week: Twitch Plays Pokemon. As far as what we've been playing, we've got Ikaruga, Outlast, Super Mario 3D World, more Spelunky, and a bunch of other random nostalgia gold, including SkiFree and Dragon Fighter. We've also got reader mail and some exciting announcements. Opening music is "Intro" by Slime Girls, break is "Rapping 2 U" by Das Racist, and closing is "Bright Lit Blue Skies" by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti. In prep for next week, we'll all be playing "Gravity Bone," and we encourage you to play it along with us! It's only 20 minutes long, and provides a LOT to talk about. Check it out for free download over at BlendoGames.com. Leave us a rating/review and check us out on the web! Bajo and Hex are back with reviews of Gravity Bone, Thirty Flights of Loving, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Borderlands 2...
Blendo Games' Brendon Chung joins Rob and Julian to talk about Flotilla, Atom Zombie Smasher, Gravity Bone, and his approach to design. Rob and Julian are fascinated by his willingness to conclude a game when it is at its best, and Brendon explains why that is and the things from his own games that he wants to revisit. Rob is crushed to hear of the lost, X-COM style metagame for Atom Zombie Smasher.
This week Unlimited Hyperbole talks to Brendon Chung, the designer of Atom Zombie Smasher and Gravity Bone, about his favourite game and the very definite effect it had on him as both a fan and an independent game developer. Released in 1998 by Looking Glass Studios, Thief: The Dark Project has been repeatedly hailed as not just one of the first true stealth games, but also one of the best games ever made. Looking back, Brendon discusses both what makes Thief such a triumph of world design, but also the effect it had on shaping his own games more than a decade later. Unlimited Hyperbole is a weekly podcast about videogames and the stories we tell about them. The show is divided into seasons of five episodes, each with a topic that’s used as a prompt when interviewing special guests. This season we’re talking about “My Favourite Game”.
