Today's Broadcast is C1E68 for Theme Thursday, October 27th, 2022. Today's theme is a collection of spooky, dissonant, jarring music for the occasion of Halloween, on a program we're calling "They're Coming to Get You, Barbara" - a "Lost Level", originally intended for C1E37: Halloween 2018, then bumped to C1E48: Halloween 2019, before being bumped indefinitely, and lost to the sands of time....UNTIL NOW! Featuring a music block produced all the way back in July of 2018, making today's broadcast "THE KING OF LOST LEVELS"! And even though the "production quality" of a music block this old is far inferior to our current fresh productions, the "design philosophy" behind this block remains to this day the most sophisticated thing I've ever done. I'll let the intro tell the story!    Track# - Track - Game - System - Composer - Timestamp    01) Intro - 00:00:00  02) Freak you Out - Vay - Sega CD - Shigeki Sako - 00:04:59  03) Kadaver's Base - Skeleton Krew - Genesis - Nathan McCree - 00:06:56  04) Title - Mystix: World of Horror - Atari 8-bit - Falk Büttner - 00:09:36  05) Elm Street - Nightmare on Elm Street - NES - David Wise - 00:11:09  06) Inside Deep Darkness - Lagrange Point - Famicom (VRC7) - Akio Dobashi, Noriyuki Takahashi, Katsuhiro Suzuki, and/or Atsushi Fujio - 00:13:55  07) Twilight - LoZ: Twilight Princess - GameCube / Wii - Toru Minegishi and/or Asuka Ohta - 00:16:11  08) Section F Suspense - Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - multi - Mick Gordon - 00:19:32  09) Dark Sanctuary Fortress - Metroid Prime 2 - Game Cube - Kenji Yamamoto - 00:21:41  10) Earth Elemental - Chakan: The Forever Man - Genesis - Mark Miller and/or Jason Scher - 00:23:49  11) Options - Bram Stoker's Dracula - Genesis - Matt Furniss - 00:27:01  12) Gravity Unusual - Strider - Genesis - Junko Tamiya - 00:28:07  13) Triangle - Thumper - PS4 / SWITCH - Brian Gibson - 00:28:54  14) Metroid Prime Battle - Metroid Prime - GameCube - Kenji Yamamoto and/or Kouichi Kyuma - 00:32:40  15) Gore Nest - DOOM (2016) - multi - Mick Gordon - 00:36:25  16) Boss 3 - Legendary Axe - TG16 - Atsumi Chikuma and/or Toshiaki Takimoto - 00:40:14  17) Ghost Valley - Super Mario Kart  - SNES - Soyo Oka - 00:41:38  18) Mojo's Future Crush - X-Men - Genesis - Fletcher Beasley - 00:42:53  19) Bloodpuppets Battle - Splatterhouse 2 - Genesis - Eiko Kaneda - 00:45:53  20) Battle - LaPlace no Ma - PC Engine - Unknown - 00:47:46  21) Endless Pursuer - Snatcher - Sega CD -Konami Kukeiha Club - 00:49:20  22) Crisis - Final Fantasy X - PS2 - Masahashi Hamauzu, Junya Nakano and/or Nobuo Uematsu - 00:51:12  23) Shadow Beast - LoZ: Twilight Princess - GameCube / Wii - Toru Minegishi and/or Asuka Ohta - 00:54:58  24) Beelzebub - Ghouls and Ghosts - Genesis - Tamayo Kawamoto - 00:56:06  25) Naja - Cosmic Carnage - 32X - Hikoshi Hashimoto - 00:57:29  26) Inside a Leviathan Seed - Metroid Prime 3 - Kenji Yamamoto, Minako Hamano, and/or Masaru Tajiima - 00:59:33  27) Agahnim - LoZ: LttP - SNES - Koji Kondo - 01:03:15  28) Spook Mansion - Tiny Toon Adventures - SNES - Kazuhiko Uehara, and/or Yukie Morimoto - 01:04:17  29) Undead - Conker's Bad Fur Day - N64 - Robin Beanland - 01:05:51  30) Maze Music 3 - Kether - CD-I - Santiago J. Original version composed by Tōru Minegishi, Asuka Hayazaki, and/or Kōji Kondō. The howling wind effect was complement of YouTuber "AndreeaRR  ". Our outro music is Funky Radio, from Jet Grind Radio, on the Sega Dreamcast, composed by B.B. Rights.    Intro / Outro / Final Production produced using Ardour 6 / Audacity 3 in Ubuntu Studio [Linux] 22.04 09/05/2022. Music Block produced in GarageBand in macOS 07/23/2018.       IMPORTANT NOTE: The tools and techniques I used back in 2018 in producing the music block were NOT up to my current standards – including featuring less sophisticated fades, more imprecise volume level balancing, less developed track run-order sorting, and even my having used MP3s rather than WAVs in the source production, resulting in a lower-fidelity final product, and further limiting my ability to touch it up after the fact. As such, the production value of this episode will NOT be to par with our current "fresh episodes". But production values aside, the quality of the CONTENT itself, otherwise, I feel, is excellent, and well worth digging up to share with you.....I hope that you'll agree! :-)     You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    Our YouTube Channel, for the time being is in dormancy, but will be returning with content, hopefully, in 2022. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a 1986 platform game developed and published by Nintendo as the sequel to Super Mario Bros. (1985). The games are similar in style and gameplay, with players controlling Mario or Luigi to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser. The Lost Levels adds a greater level of difficulty and Luigi controls slightly differently from Mario, with reduced ground friction and increased jump height. The Lost Levels also introduces obstacles such as poison mushroom power-ups, counterproductive level warps, and mid-air wind gusts. The game has 32 levels across eight worlds and 20 bonus levels. I think most of our listeners know I'm a Mario fan-boy. We've covered most of his games from the old days, with Super Mario All-Stars  being a rare exception. I know this is a phenomenal collection of games, and you probably know it, too. But we've already covered all the included games in greater detail on their own episodes of the podcast. I wasn't sold there was enough meat on the bone to justify talking about them all again.    But then I started replaying it, and remembered just how incredible this collection is. Better graphics, better music, save files, a never before released (in North America) Mario game. Super Mario All-Stars is phenomenal, and dammit, it's time to give it its due on RTG.   David Rae makes his triumphant return to the show this week. He was my guest for the Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros 2, and Super Mario Bros episodes, and we talked about what made this collection special, what other NES games would have benefitted from the All-Stars treatment, and whether or not these games are the greatest remasters of all-time...   And before we star is all the way up, I stumble through another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, I answer a bunch of "will this game ever get an episode of the podcast?' questions. Why do I hate Assassin's Creed? (I don't.) And what games have let me down and surprised me the most over the years?   Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 SNES platforming greats: Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, and SMW2: Yoshi's Island.    Are you on social media? Of course you are. By a perfectly timed request by patron TheyCallMeSleeper, this episode arrives just in time to be positioned between this channel's coverage of Super Mario Bros. and its American sequel. Of course, this Japan-only sequel has almost nothing to do with that latter game besides the addition of Luigi as the Mario Bro. whose controls and physics turn his adventure into hard mode. But every mode of Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels amounts to hard mode, doesn't it? Nintendo took no prisoners with this one. No, they took those prisoners and tossed 'em in the wood chipper, laughing cruelly the entire time. Harsh. We'll not only be talking about these games as they exist in the Super Mario All-Stars compilation, but we'll also discus the history of these two games on the Famicom and NES back in the 80s. And don't forget to tune in next week (hopefully) where we'll be talking about Super Mario. Bros 2 (the North American Version).

"Not having fun is bad when you're a company selling fun." This is how a game evaluator for Nintendo of America summed up the sequel to the best-selling game of all time. Thus, the true Mario 2 never saw a release outside of Japan and was later dubbed "The Lost Levels". Instead, Nintendo reskinned and revamped an innovative Fuji-TV licensed game with Mario characters and called it good, thus introducing a new cast of characters to the Mario universe, including Shy Guys and of course, Birdo. This week, we talk both versions of Mario 2 and come to some surprising conclusions! The post S1 Ep. 7: Super Mario Bros 2 and The Lost Levels first appeared on Gameography Podcast.

Nintendo Relaunches Old Game Console

Nintendo has announced that one of its vintage consoles, Game & Watch, will be relaunched for a limited time. The Game & Watch devices were originally released in 1980 and manufactured until 1991. The console became a sensation, selling over 43 million units. Each device was designed to play only one game, and Nintendo released a total of 59 handheld games for it. The console's original release was momentous for Nintendo because its success paved the way for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Game Boy in the latter half of the 1980s. Although the Game & Watch was not as noteworthy as other Nintendo consoles, it was the first to feature the plus-shaped directional pad that became common among the company's later releases. Called the Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., the relaunched console will contain three games—Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, and Ball (the Mario version). The new edition will have a full-color LCD screen in place of the original black and white display. It will also be rechargeable through a USB-C port and can last through eight hours of play per charge. Like every Game & Watch device that came out after 1981, the new one can also be used as an alarm clock. It will feature 35 different screen-savers showing scenes of Mario interacting with a clock. The console will be released near the end of the year in celebration of Mario's 35th anniversary. It will be priced at $49.99 and will only be available in very limited stocks until March 2021.

The radish spirit treads through foggy hot springs with a leisurely pace — almost a saunter — and into the elevator. They glance downwards at the cascade of buttons, each indicating another floor upon which to recline within yet another hazy pool of geothermal bath water. Lost in thought, the radish spirit imagines themselves floating down a splendid glowing river of silver and peering through eyes half-shut at the starry aurora above. What floor might that be on, the spirit wonders to itself — only releasing a small puff of air to indicate the weight of enormous consideration. Focusing back on the buttons, they notice a small creased corner of paper sticking out from between where the wooden edge of the elevator wall meets the brushed copper panel housing seemingly endless choices of venues for relaxation. They reach, carefully and with purpose at the small corner, and pull it gracefully from its home only to discover a simple white envelope. Examining the back reveals a circular wax stamp, about a half inch in diameter and containing a glyph unknown to them. The radish spirit opens the note, and the camera freezes. Somewhere, maybe everywhere, Nintendo fans AND Studio Ghibli fans cry out in an almost tormented joy as four words appear on-screen during this latest Direct: RADISH SPIRIT GETS STEAMY. Discussed: Spellbreak, Rainforest Cafe, Super Mario Bros. 2 - The Lost Levels, Persona 5 Royal

At the dawn of emulation and the World Wide Web, a group of fans discovered the Nintendo and Super Nintendo games that never made it over from Japan. One of them decided to hack into a few of these and translate them, unofficially, with help from some friends -- starting with Final Fantasy II for the NES. Featuring quotes from Steve Demeter, founder of one of the first fan translation groups, Demiforce, who was the driving force behind three high-profile ROM hacks -- the Final Fantasy II and Radical Dreamers translation projects, and the Earthbound Zero prototype release. ROMs are easy enough to find, although I should note that downloading ROMs of commercial games is probably illegal in your jurisdiction.
