Brendan Appel sits in for Jill this week, and discussed a pair of articles he wrote regarding the survival of the manual transmission. Brendan argues that carmakers have hastened the demise of stick shift by limiting availability and underestimating demand. Brendan notes the surprising popularity of stick shift on a number of new sporty offerings. In the second segment Brendan and Tom welcome Monica Gorgas, brand manager for the redesigned Lincoln Nautilus midsize crossover. Do you drive an automatic or stick shift? The first car I bought for myself was a stick shift, a Toyota Tercel. I drove it basically into the ground. But three years ago I bought a new car and it's actually sort of challenging to buy a stick shift now. Everything is automatic. There's less to think about while driving. This struck me as a really interesting analogy to emotional eating. Emotional eating is like driving an automatic car. The car does all the shifting for you, you don't have to think about it. That's what happens when we stress or anger eat, we aren't even conscious of searching for the food until we're actually eating it. How do we engage thought about it? How do we shift out of automatic and get back in control of the car?   If a stick shift is what you're used to driving, eventually your body understands when to gear up or gear down. There's an actual physical sense of when it needs to happen. You're in control of the car without effort, you just have awareness of what's needed. And that's what we need to cultivate with food. The awareness and control of driving a stick shift. When we let our eating go on automatic, we are in danger of losing our intuition for what to do. It's empowering to take control of our direction and let our bodies learn to read when they need to gear up or gear down in terms of eating. And just like it's never too late to learn to drive a stick shift, it's never too late to gain control of emotional eating. I forget how to drive stick every once in a while. But there are checks in place to help me. I'm going to share with you how to get back into that place of conscious body driving in this episode.  About host Michelle Tubman:Michelle Tubman is an emergency physician in Alberta, Canada. Today we're covering Toyota's march toward EVs, Tesla's investor day, and a resurgence of the manual transmission.Incoming Toyota CEO, Koji Sato is preparing to take the baton from long time CEO and industry icon Akido Toyoda on April 1st and he is making his intentions clear that Toyota will be taking a BEV first approach moving forward while maintaining its holistic and measured approach. "To deliver attractive BEVs to more customers, we must streamline the structure of the car, and — with a BEV-first mindset — we must drastically change the way we do business, from manufacturing to sales and service. Now that the time is right, we will accelerate BEV development with a new approach.”Sato is an experienced engineer who leads the Lexus International premium division as well as Toyota's Gazoo Racing motorsports arm. The company recently executed a full tear down of a Model Y and seemed to be impressed with the elegance and efficiency of its design with one executive saying "Taking the skin off the Model Y, it was truly a work of art. It's unbelievable."Toyota plans a strong continuation of its hybrid, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen-powered cars in addition to its development of EVs.Toyota owned Lexus, for example, already has a goal of going fully electric worldwide by 2035 and selling 1 million EVs globally in 2030Today at 4pm EST the much anticipated Tesla Investor Day will begin at the company's Gigafactory in Austin, TX.
