It seems that with every new Japanese game released here in the States, there's another controversy about the translation. Most recently, we saw this with Metaphor: Refantasio, but the same thing happened with Unicorn Overlord and many others. This is true not only for games but also for anime and Manga. So today, we brought in Alexander O. Smith, a professional Japanese-to-English translator and game writer who worked on games like Vagrant Story, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XII, to set the record straight about the process of game translation and localization. Is the game industry plagued with "rogue translators" who are pushing their own agenda? Is censorship the issue? In this episode, you'll learn how and why these decisions are made and learn some REALLY cool behind-the-scenes info on how Final Fantasy X was translated! Timecodes: 1. Intro (0:00) 2. God is watching, have faith. God is also listening to us assuming the piss position, successfully whistling grass, gaslighting ourselves, flying in from Final Fantasy XII, pursuing beauty, acquiring heroes of myths and legends, ordering dairy from the liquor bar, caring not for coin, remembering Beowulf facts, befriending a dragon, wishing for the anti-pervert, quitting darkened halls, thinking as a free thinker, reframing Ovelia as sister-girlfriend, questioning our own motivations, and yearning to slay men of the cloth. Those who live by deceit are the first to die by it. Those who listen to this episode will hear tales of jumping in first-person, rescuing a pony-tailed squire, blinging the magic rocks, climbing walls and talking shit, bringing a gun to a wizard fight, realizing we're in Final Fantasy XII's future, losing patience with Mustadio, finding Christ without a crucifixion, creepin' on some ladies, blowing grass, wishing for no quarrel, leaving us wroth, soiling our names, coddling the boy, sipping villainously, and wondering if Agrias is lost in the sauce. We finish our long Final Fantasy adventure by playing Square's largest single player Final Fantasy yet. But does size equal quality? Does it equal ambition? We have many thoughts about this and about where the entire Final Fantasy VII Remake Project has gone and is heading in this enormous podcast about an equally enormous game. After dozens of hours, we are left with one simple question: why do we do this to ourselves? 1. Because we were ready to game2. Because we were sure of quality3. Because we were cluelessTrick question. The correct answer was: because it's our job.Thank you so much as always for listening, please rate and review the podcast, and tell all your friends on whatever social media you call home that they should check us out.
Whether you know him from his legendary work on Final Fantasy Tactics or elsewhere, odds are you at least know composer Hitoshi Sakimoto's name. And while he often gets talked about for his work in those Ivalice titles like FFT, Final Fantasy XII, and Vagrant Story, Sakimoto has worked on a fascinating variety of game soundtracks, dating back to 1988!As fascinating as it is that he worked on music for Radiant Silvergun and Gradius V, today we are, of course, discussing Sakimoto's music in RPGs, including four new-to-Rhythm Encounter game debuts. There are sure to be some surprises, but there's only one way to know for sure — find out!Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff, Audra Bowling, Greg Delmage; Edited by Jono LoganLinks for this episode Hitoshi Sakimoto on VGMdb Rhythm Encounter 5 - Ormond Alliance | RPGFan Rhythm Encounter 40 - Back to School | RPGFan Rhythm Encounter 71 - Press Start: Title Screen Music | RPGFan Retro Encounter 283 - Crimson Shroud | RPGFan Tracklist & Order0:16:05 - Brand Logo ~ Title Back (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Final Fantasy Tactics OST0:17:12 - Dawn on Leá Monde - Vagrant Story (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Vagrant Story OST0:36:56 - Revolt (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber OST0:40:10 - Limitation (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together OST1:06:37 - A World Where Magic Never Was (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Crimson Shroud OST1:09:15 - The Middle Layer Area (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter OST 1:34:55 - The Ones Who Obtain Tomorrow (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - Legaia 2: Duel Saga OST1:37:21 - Brat Overflow -Branched- (Hitoshi Sakimoto) - 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Remix & Arrange Album -The Branched-2:03:50 - Hilary's Bonus Track!Album links for places to buy, stream, and more are available in our post on RPGFan.Get in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: music@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom
[School of Everything Else 2023] This episode coincides with the Switch and PS4 release of the Pixel Remasters of the first six games in this legendary, long-running RPG dynasty. Part 1: Where do you start with a series that has a game called Final Fantasy X and a game called Final Fantasy XII and a game called Final Fantasy X-2 and only one of those is an actual sequel to the other? Not only do we lay out which games to try first, but we divide them all into design eras and let you know what to expect from each. Part 2: We discuss the plot and characters of one of the most beloved in the series, Final Fantasy IV. This won't spoil the game, only make it more special to play. But if you really don't want to hear any details whatsoever and intend to play this 1991 game to completion right now, you can hold off at the 57 minute mark. Which mainline numbered (non MMORPG) games are playable on the current, running console generations? PlayStation: 1-10 as well as 12 and 15. Switch: 1-10 as well as 12. Plus a chibi version of 15. Xbox: 7-10 as well as 12 and 15 and the only current machine you can play XIII on. Other notable versions: PSP: 1,2,3,4 / Game Boy Advance: 1,2,4,5 and 6 / Steam, Vita, Windows, IOS and Android / As well as the originals on NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2 Also: Catch us on the Old Kids Movies podcast this week, talking all about Ella Enchanted with them @OldKidsMovies

The land of Ivalice is a land in constant turmoil, and with Final Fantasy XII we find ourselves caught in the midst of a larger struggle that is obliterating the borderlands between two massive empires. This is how the stage is set for the twelfth entry in the Final Fantasy series, the first mainline entry of the series to get really weird with it. This episode concerns itself primarily with the game's many new mechanics, and a general discussion of how they hang together. We then talk about the intro to the game, covering everything up through the mines on Bhujerba. Big thanks to Nat for executive producing this episode. Additionally, we would like to thank the creator we highlight this episode, Victoria, and her podcast We Happen to Be Trans (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjcnvyW4q35AhUehIkEHfphDyMQFnoECBYQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fanchor.fm%2Fwehappentobetrans&usg=AOvVaw0frcdTb8KggQHkuUVM5B8i), a pop culture podcast that, incidentally, is hosted by three trans women. Well, it's June so it's about time to wrap up our interview series from MTAC Score! But perhaps we have saved the best for last?* We had the eminent pleasure to get to chat with Kari Wahlgren. For us, the bunch of Final Fantasy sickos that we all are, she's best known as the voice of Ashe in Final Fantasy XII. However, some may better know her from her role as Saber in Fate/zero, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works and Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel, or as Celty Sturluson in the Durarara!! series. And in animation work she has performed as such roles as Tigress in the Netflix version of Carmen Sandiego, Shannon in OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, as well as a bunch of different characters in shows like the recent version of DuckTales, The Owl House, Rick and Morty, Infinity Train, and way more to list here. Way more. Although most recently you can hear her as the voice of Baby Scrat in Ice Age: Scrat Tales on Disney+.* That's not true they were all amazing and the best.OSMnotesWe wanted to thank MTAC and Kari for the chance to chat! If you are interested in following Kari you can find her in a whole bunch of places.
