Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We're shorthanded again this week, but John & Kevin have been doing plenty of video gaming lately, so let's get right into the action! Kevin kicks things off with his first impressions of UFO 50 — a massive collection of "retro" games made for a fictional console from the 1980s — from the developer of Spelunky and friends! From there, John & Kevin take a little time to shine a spotlight on 20 Minutes Till Dawn, after both getting pretty sucked into this one. Is 20 minutes the perfect length for a roguelike/roguelite run?! Kevin's also been absolutely hooked on another roguelike in Shogun Showdown, which has an incredible blend of puzzle solving, turn-based strategy, and deckbuilding RPG elements. Finally, John wraps things up with his thoughts on EVERSPACE, as he continues his quest to find a modern day on-rails shooter that lives up to Star Fox 64. Timestamps: UFO 50 - 00:01:51 20 Minutes Till Dawn - 00:17:07 Shogun Showdown - 00:23:21 EVERSPACE - 00:30:02 Thanks for taking the time to listen!

Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan, and Kris intended to talk about the Dreamcast celebrating its 25th anniversary, but got completely derailed by the announcement of the PS5 Pro and the general state of gaming. How on earth did we get to the point of selling a completely unnecessary mid-generation upgrade for $700? Who is this for? At the top of the show, Dan finally puts some time in with his Steam Deck, and details how that all works. Both of the guys got to dive into Gimmick 2 as well, which seems to be a worthy followup, at least so far. Finally, in Week Old News, Sony raises their prices and removes Concord from everyone's systems, Spelunky gets an official Commodore 64 port, Microsoft indulges in even more layoffs, and Annapurna gets ditched. My guest today is the American video game artist and designer, Derek Yu. Born in Pasadena, California in the early eighties, he started mapping out games on graph paper when he was still a child. After graduating college with a degree in computer science, he moved to San Francisco to work as a freelance illustrator. In 2007 he developed a satirical run-and-gun freeware game titled “I'm O.K – A Murder Simulator”, a response to a challenge set down by the notorious critic of video games, (and previous guest of the show) Jack Thompson. He then formed a studio with one of his ‘I'm OK' collaborators and together they released Aquaria, a critically lauded side-scroller. That game's success enabled my guest to make Spelunky, one of the most popular and influential roguelike platformers yet made. Spelunky sold more than a million copies, won numerous awards, and begat an equally well-regarded sequel. Now, four years on, my guest is about to release UFO 50, a collection of games that combine an 8-bit aesthetic with pioneering design. Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

TCW Podcast Episode 171 - A Rogue's Survival Part 2 In part two we look more closely at the evolution of rogue and its descendants. The game Hack which lead to the development of NetHack, and Moria. These games continued down branching paths to have influences on MMOs, Diablo, and others. We then jump ahead to the modern indie scene, and how the random generation aspects were adapted to create Spelunky. Spelunky in turn inspired other creators to create games using random generation elements. The most notable of these being The Binding of Isaac, FTL, and Crypt of the Necrodancer. It is through these four games that we can see that the concept of randomly generated maps and scenarios are not limited to dungeon crawls, or ASCII art. The concepts can be brought into other genres including platforming, real time strategy, and rhythm games.
