My guest today is Chris Remo. Chris is designer and a composer at the videogame studio Campo Santo and the producer and host of Idle Thumbs. After spending a number of years as a videogame journalist Chris moved into development, working on games like Gone Home, The Cave, Thirty Flights of Loving and most recently, Firewatch. We talk early obsessions with Civilization, first discovering Star Wars via the PC X-Wing games, college dorm Starcraft battles, playing through the videogame canon in a matter of months, and why his love of Lucasarts adventure games have played such a pivotal role in his life. What could a soft, sweet game about relationships and self-discovery possibly have in common with a fast-paced spy thriller game? You're about to find out, assuming you're here to listen to part 1 of our 4 in February episode!
My guest on today's show is Brendon Chung. Founder of Blendo games and creator of Gravity Bone, Atom Zombie Smasher, Thirty Flights of Loving and the upcoming Quadrilateral Cowboy. Many of Brendon's games have been built using the mod tools from games like Half Life 2 and Doom 3, so the games that Brendon creates and the games that have shaped his life intertwine in fascinating way. Things like Doom, Quake, and Thief are both videogame milestones in his life but also their mod tools form the backbone of the games he makes. We talk about kind uncles, pulling things apart to see how they work, environmental story telling in Doom, making movies about a golf club wielding hitman, being so good at Quake multiplayer that you can echo locate players through the pick ups they collect and how you would really act if you were your character in Fallout 4.
This episode we're discussing short-game touchpoint Thirty Flights of Loving by Blendo Games. Thirty Flights has cast a wide influence over the five years since its release and employs film-like smash cuts and non-sequential storytelling...

Who, Dunkerque, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, Big Littles Lies, Thirty Flights of Loving y Splatoon 2. Suenan: LCD Soundsystem: 45:33 (Pt. 2) Brian Reitzell: American Gods (Main Title) Arcade Fire: Afterlife

Regular games talk will resume for the next show. Corey and Brad discuss Corey's impending move to New Orleans, Brad preparing to take in foster kids, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Thirty Flights of Loving, John Wick, TV shows, politics and more. Recorded on February 20th, 2013 with Brian Fife, James Fingal and Thomas Westberg. Examples of sex and violence in video games are often trotted out as the root cause of many of society’s ills. Stepping away from the drama, are video games materially different than, say, movies? Brian laments the fact that we don’t have many interesting examples of love and romance in video games. Jim’s been playing available interpretations as they are released, and Tom optimistically reminds us that we’re still in early days as far as the medium is concerned. Referenced items: Thoughts About App Store Curation, Video Games and the Human Condition, Fifty Shades of Grey, Postal, Manhunt, Call of Duty, Top 10 Movies, Top 10 Games, Just Dance 4, NBA Jam, Madden NFL, Lego Batman, Call of Duty, Halo, Grantland - Spec Ops the Line, Sexposition, Mass Effect, Grantland - Mass Effect Three, Fable, Skyrim, Catherine, Karateka, Spec Ops the Line, Natural Born Killers, Bioshock, Doom, Cut the Rope, FarmVille, Infinity Blade, Mortal Kombat, Death Race, Peggle, Angry Birds, Minecraft, Clear Vision Two, Skinner Box, No Violence Please, We’re Gamers, Rethinking Mass Murder, Gears of War, Killzone, Mirror’s Edge, Heat, Kill Bill, Let The Right One In, Portal, Dating Sim, Leisure Suit Larry, Scenes From a Marriage, Heavy Rain, The Witcher, God of War, Duke Nukem, The Player, The Mummy, G.I. Nathan’s back and has been finishing off the main quest-line in Skyrim and getting some quality time in with KRUNCH. Paul is somewhat cynical about just how “good” Double Fine’s The Cave looks and the two have a long talk about Zero Dark Thirty and how “meh” it turned out to be. It wouldn’t be a normal podcast without Nathan hating everything in the “media critic” industry, so we talk about Anthony Burch’s self-depreciation, unrealistic nostalgic goals and how he got scolded for hating Casablanca in his film class. Also, we revisit an old My Little Pony conversation and find out if Nathan has any new F/M/K answers…
