This week the SuperPod Boiz are joined by Kate and Emily of No Small Games to discuss some influential indie games that played a big part in how they look at indie games today and how they helped to shape their gaming tastes. We also abolish horiscopes in favor of Ooblets. All hail Ooblets. CREDITS Aaron
On this first episode of Random Encounter for 2025, Jono is missing, and it's up to the panel to find him!Just kidding; we aren't a semi-educational game from the 1990s. Jono has bronchitis this week, so it's up to the brand-new full-time host of Retro Encounter, Zach Wilkerson, to fill in for him!Joining Zach is Neal, who is chatting about the recent remake of one of the first RPG indie hits ever: Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated. Released on Xbox Live Arcade back in 2011, Zeboyd Games' original Breath of Death VII delivered a fun, retro-style JRPG with nostalgic 8-bit graphics. This remake updates the visuals to stunning 16-bit while also delivering a brand-new soundtrack from HyperDuck SoundWorks! Does this remake live up to the original?Audra is also joining the panel to chat about the Ace Attorney-inspired adventure Paper Perjury. With delightfully pixelated graphics and compelling mysteries galore, did Paper Perjury have Audra standing up, pointing her finger, and screaming "Objection?"Featuring: Zach Wilkerson, Audra Bowling, and Neal Chandran; Edited by Jono LoganGet in Touch:RPGFan.comRPGFan ShopEmail us: podcast@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomBluesky: @rpgfan.bsky.socialInstagram: @rpgfancomThreads: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancomThis Episode's Related Links:Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated ReviewBreath of Death VII: The Beginning ReviewPaper Perjury Review
The Geek Critique returns to the Kongversation to help Hyle grapple with a newly relevant question now that Banjo-Tooie is on Nintendo Switch Online: What is it about the game that's historically kept it from clicking with fans of even the original Banjo-Kazooie, or inspired rabid devotion that eclipses all else? With NSO making it easier than ever to get into it and helping to mitigate the issues for the former, Hyle believes he has an answer for the latter. Banjo-Tooie is the ultimate game for Rare sickos!

[Episode 31] This month barSILENCE is headed to the Xbox Live Arcade to listen to the high energy neon-drenched beats of the Geometry Wars series! Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved and its sequel, Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, were groundbreaking titles that helped define the modern twin-stick shooter genre. Known for their simple yet addictive gameplay, fast-paced action, and vibrant visuals, these games kept players coming back for “just one more round” thanks to Chris Chudley's electrifying soundtrack. Their success during the early Xbox Live Arcade era paved the way for the fully 3D sequel, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, available across multiple platforms. With its Tron-like low-poly grids and Chris Mann's pulsating techno-electro house soundtrack, this series remains a nostalgic gem that's ready for a revival. Take a listen and set a high score on whatever it is you are doing today! In today's Daily Fix: Destiny developer Bungie has recently announced a 17% reduction in its workforce, or 220 people. Every level of the studio has been affected, including executive and senior roles. Bungie Boss Pete Parsons acknowledged the success of the Destiny 2 expansion, The Final Shape, but blamed "industry shifts" and "enduring economic conditions" for the layoffs. In other, still kinda depressing news, indie developer Jonathan Blow has admitted that the Braid anniversary edition "sold like dog***t" and that the studio's future could be in question. Braid was an indie hit on Xbox Live Arcade back in 2008, but the anniversary edition, which features redrawn art, has not replicated the original's success. And finally, Xbox is releasing a new translucent controller that tips a hat to the OG Xbox era.
Let's go back in time, D-Pads! But this time, it's not JUST to look at a retro game. It's to look at a now-sixteen-year-old game with rewind mechanics at its core. Braid first hit the scene in 2008 as a darling of the Indie Game community, and set Xbox Live Arcade up for a run which would change console gaming forever. However, we didn't ALL get a chance to play it, so this week in celebration of the recent release of Braid, Anniversary Edition, Mikey guides Andrew through Jonathan Blow's masterpiece for the very first time. Make sure to catch the gameplay portion of this week's episode where we play through the first few worlds of Braid here: https://youtu.be/fJQXXHP-hrEJoin us on Twitter: @RetrogradePod, @RetrogradeAndy, @RetrogradeMikeyTikTok: @RetrogradePodOr on Instagram: @theretrogradepodcast Or visit our website at www.theretrogradepod.com/Questions, Comments, and business inquiries can be sent to theretrogradepodcast@gmail.comShow Notes: https://www.theretrogradepod.com/episodes/braid-anniversary-edition

Jack Zustiak joins the show again. Palworld is the talk of the internet this week. The crew discusses everything that's been going on concerning "Pokemon with guns." Anthony isn't sure Ubisoft meant what they were saying about not wanting people to be comfortable owning games. The guys talk about the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel including multiplayer. They lament Microsoft laying off 1,900 people in the gaming division after Xbox acquired Activision/Blizzard. Does Xbox's Indie Selects feel reminiscent of Xbox Live Arcade? 00:00:00 Intro 00:00:58 Palworld takes over gaming 00:25:13 Ubisoft doesn't want you to feel comfortable owning games 00:47:14 Cyberpunk 2077 sequel may include multiplayer 00:51:57 Microsoft and Xbox layoff 1,900 people after Activision/Blizzard acquisition 01:10:07 Is Xbox Live Arcade coming back?
In today's Daily Fix:Fntastic, the developer behind The Day Before, claims that the game was met with a biased "hate campaign." In a statement, they say the game did ship with all the major features that were promised and that gamers were looking for gameplay elements that were never there to begin with. Hmmm...not sure about that. In other news, Palworld is continuing its march to world dominance, with Geoff Keighley confirming that the now 7 million copies sold were just on Steam. The game is also available on Xbox and PC, but keep in mind, it's also on Game Pass at no extra charge on those platforms. And speaking of Xbox, Microsoft has announced the Xbox Indie Selects program which will highlight various indie games every month. It's kind of like Xbox Live Arcade, but not called Xbox Live Arcade.
Jesse, Mark, Ronnie, and Robert Winfree throw in some fun commentary as they celebrate "The Simpsons" as it becomes the longest-running primetime scripted series in U.S. history. The Simpsons is an arcade beat 'em up developed and published by Konami released in 1991. It was the first video game based on the Simpsons franchise to be released in North America. The game allows up to four players to control members of the Simpson family as they fight various enemies to rescue the kidnapped Maggie. It was a commercial success in the United States, where it was one of the top three best-selling arcade video game machines of 1991, The game also features the television shows's voice actors; Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith reprising their respective roles as the Simpsons family. The game was ported to the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS soon after its launch in the arcades, and was released as The Simpsons Arcade Game on those platforms. It was also released under that title on Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 360 and PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 in February 2012; however, it was removed from both services on December 20, 2013. In 2021, Arcade1Up released a 30th anniversary edition home arcade cabinet.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich
A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool
Between 2007 and 2008, the gaming industry underwent transformative changes and faced challenges both external and internal. In 2007, as the world teetered on the brink of a global recession, new blockbuster franchises like Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, and Uncharted took the stage. However, challenges like the Xbox 360's 'Red Ring of Death' highlighted the need for rigorous quality control. Mergers and acquisitions were the order of the day, with Activision merging with Vivendi and EA continuing its acquisition spree. Meanwhile, Bungie's decision to part ways with Microsoft signaled a significant shift in industry dynamics. Amidst this backdrop, digital marketplaces like WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade emerged, revolutionizing game distribution. 2008 then witnessed the indie game scene's meteoric rise, primarily driven by Xbox Live's 'Summer of Arcade.' This event not only showcased indie games to the wider public but also set the stage for an indie creative boom that would reshape the industry. The two years posed questions about consolidation, innovation, and the evolving dynamics between major players and indie developers.Featured Games:BioShock, Portal, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Mario Kari Wii, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame It's a BIG week for the Ninja Turtles with Mutant Mayhem hitting theatres, and I needed a game for this week's episode while I work on playing through Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (which will be next week's show), so I figured let's be topical AND talk about an awesome game at the same time. This week's all about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project for the NES. When most people think of TMNT on the NES, they probably either think of the first game (electric seaweed, anyone?), or the Arcade game port. Manhattan Project came out toward the end of the NES's lifespan, and it's a real shame more people didn't play it, because it's a bonafide gem of a beat 'em up, and it improves on TMNT 2: The Arcade Game in practically every possible way. I'm rolling solo this week, and I had no trouble gushing about this game. My brother and I used to rent it all the time, and between the better graphics, improved combat, special moves and ABILITY TO SWAP TURTLES WHEN YOU DIE, I think this is not only one of the best TMNT games ever made, but one of the best NES games, as well. And before we explore Manhattan, I surf through another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I think gaming will ever be 100% streaming focused? What game that we've covered on the show needs a remaster the most? And remember Xbox Live Arcade? Of course you do. Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 other TMNT games: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003 TV series game), and TMNT (2007 Movie game). Learn more about your ad choices. All those years ago, Tim had left the podcast behind. Welcome back to the podcast! For our first episode in Mystery May (but with rolling dice instead of solving mysteries), we're going to be talking about Braid! Braid, as honestly you're probably already aware, is a puzzle platformer that received a massive amount of recognition and acclaim when it launched on the Xbox Live Arcade way back in 2008. Far more puzzle than platformer, in Braid you use standard platforming controls and the ability to reverse time to collect puzzle pieces and complete levels, with each new level offering a different gimmick that changes the way the world and sometimes your abilities work. Gameplay-wise, the puzzles are extremely well-built. Never being outright unsolvable for the average person but also deep enough to provide a challenge and featuring some truly unique solutions. To some, this will be the biggest draw of the game. For others, the game's melancholic tone and vague story will be the thing that hooks them, and it is also well crafted. The writing is eloquent and evocative, calling to mind how we as people handle mistakes and questioning the fantasy of being able to turn back time to correct them. As two different elements of the game, they both really sing, but when experienced together, how well do they mix? We're going to be talking about our difficulties with the puzzles, our difficulties with piecing the game's message together from the parts it gives you, and we make listening to the episode without being embarrassed about it a difficulty by telling a yo mama joke at the halfway point. Thank you for joining us again this week! Braid coming up first on Mystery May is a great example of what we designed the whole system around because it's been on our list literally since the inception of the podcast and kept getting kicked further down the road. It feels good to have finally played it, but missing the cultural zeitgeist on this game may have done more harm than we realized? Do you think Braid still holds up and its intentions still come across in the modern day? Do you think Braid has had an impact on game development or just indie game popularity generally? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we're going to be talking about Child of Light, as deigned by the fates, so we hope you'll join us then.
It's the Xbox Live Arcade remake of a retro arcade game. One of the benefits of using the Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button to select a game is that it often picks titles that our hosts have never seen. Despite its age, our hosts were not aware of this arcade shooter remake developed by Rare and (if we are being honest) they were not even familiar with the original or its sequels. Going in with a completely clean slate, how will our hosts feel about the game loop? Will it prove fun enough for the game to earn a spot in their rotation after the mandated hour is up? “None of us were there when it happened.” With some delay, we bring you our podcast about the Hungarian/Japanese developed shoot 'em up, Sine Mora. Video games can be ridiculous, but which ones would the average Joe think you'd completely made up? Someone please save me from writing something here every week. Is there a not an AI capable of doing this, albeit without my amazing sense of humour? We've got games that let you explore procedurally generated worlds! Someone procedurally generate some words for me! On that happy note, the VG247 The Best Games Ever Podcast returns, with episode 6. This week I was concerned that we'd be unable to put ourselves in the shoes of the average plebeian, what with us being superstar games journo types, but my fear was unwarranted. That's right, it's time for the Best game someone not in the know would think you'd made up. “What is VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast?” you ask. I'm not sure I want to tell you. Why don't you take a chance on it and find out for yourself? Each episode of the Best Games Ever Podcast is only about 30 minutes, so what have you got to lose? It's bound to be better than an episode of Eastenders (that's a terrible London-set soap opera for our US readers). Hopefully you can find room in your podcast-listening schedule for it. Wouldn't it be great to be there at the start of something great? To be able to tell your friends and family that you were there when Jim, Tom, and co were unknowns and not the millionaires they become? Also, you'll hopefully have some fun for half an hour. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning. W A R N I N G Best game someone not in the know would think you'd made up This is the topic of Episode six of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Tom – Mount Your Friends A real classic of the Xbox Live Arcade era, back on the Xbox 360 days. This multiplayer party game asked you to master a tricky individual limb control scheme to climb up your friends and reach a higher point than they did. It's a nailed-on all-timer, this, but did it win this very particular category? Alex – Katamari Damacy When you think of quirky video games, Katamari Damacy is likely right near the top of your brain. This joyful game is essentially built around one simple idea: roll up objects to make a huge ball. That's it really. And it's brilliant. It helps that the game has one of the best soundtracks ever and that you can now play a version of it on pretty much every platform available. Connor – Dong Dong Never Die Right, Connor isn't here to explain this to me, so just watch the video above. It's a fighting game that is unlike anything you've ever seen before. Enough said. Let us know what game you'd pick and if you think Jim must be stopped at all costs. If you like the podcast, please subscribe and leave a review saying how wonderful it is, and tell all your friends. Do a tweet about it, post on Facebook, print out copies of the podcast URL and leave them on park benches. Come back in a week for another episode of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. We've emerged from the depths of the BioShock series to begin a fresh season of Video Gameography! We're doing things differently this time as we're discussing the gameography of a developer rather than covering an individual game series. That studio is Supergiant Games, acclaimed indie developer of Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and Hades. We kick things off by examining their debut outing, Bastion. Bastion launched on Xbox Live Arcade on July 20, 2011, and was created by a ragtag team of seven friends that formed the core of Supergiant (all of whom remain at the studio today). Developed under two years entirely in co-founder Amir Rao's father's living room, Bastion gave the upstart team a chance to create the game of their dreams after spending years working for triple-A studios. We'll discuss Bastion's unorthodox development cycle (it had no pre-production phase), the origins of beloved elements such as its narrator and soundtrack, and how the game's success launched Supergiant into stardom. Join hosts Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), John Carson (@John_Carson), and Prima Games staff writer Jesse Vitelli (@jessevitelli) for an entertaining and informative chat about the history and narrative of Bastion! You can also decide which one of us does the best narrator impression. If you'd like to get in touch with the Video Gameography podcast, you can email us at podcast@gameinformer.com. Homebrew, when applied to video games, refers to games produced by hobbyists for proprietary hardware platforms that are not typically user-programmable, primarily video game consoles. These often use storage formats that make distribution difficult (such as ROM cartridges or encrypted CD-ROMs). Many systems have hardware restrictions to prevent unauthorized development. A non-professional developer for a system intended to be consumer-programmable, like the Commodore 64, is simply called a hobbyist (rather than a homebrew developer). The Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive[b] outside North America, is a 16-bit fourth-generation home video game console developed and sold by Sega. The Genesis was Sega's third console and the successor to the Master System. Sega released it in 1988 in Japan as the Mega Drive, and in 1989 in North America as the Genesis. In 1990, it was distributed as the Mega Drive by Virgin Mastertronic in Europe, Ozisoft in Australasia, and Tec Toy in Brazil. In South Korea, it was distributed by Samsung as the Super Gam*Boy and later the Super Aladdin Boy.[c] Designed by an R&D team supervised by Hideki Sato and Masami Ishikawa, the Genesis was adapted from Sega's System 16 arcade board, centered on a Motorola 68000 processor as the CPU, a Zilog Z80 as a sound controller, and a video system supporting hardware sprites, tiles, and scrolling. It plays a library of more than 900 games on ROM-based cartridges. Several add-ons were released, including a Power Base Converter to play Master System games. It was released in several different versions, some created by third parties. Sega created two network services to support the Genesis: Sega Meganet and Sega Channel. 30.75 million first-party Genesis units were sold worldwide. In addition, Tec Toy sold an estimated three million licensed variants in Brazil, Majesco projected it would sell 1.5 million licensed variants of the system in the United States, and much smaller numbers were sold by Samsung in South Korea. By the mid-2010s, licensed third-party Genesis rereleases were still being sold by AtGames in North America and Europe. Many games have been re-released in compilations or on online services such as the Nintendo Virtual Console, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Steam. The Genesis was succeeded in 1994 by the Sega Saturn.
