Liam Wong is a Scottish photographer, art director, and game designer. Born in Edinburgh he began his career in the video game industry after graduating from Abertay University. After a stint at Crytek UK, he eventually join Ubisoft Montreal, and there became the youngest director at the company. His work on acclaimed titles like Far Cry 4 helped sharpen his visual storytelling skills, which later influenced his photographic style. While visiting in Tokyo, my guest developed a passion for nighttime photography, drawing inspiration from cyberpunk films as he documented the city's vibrant yet haunting after-dark scenes. In 2019, he released his debut photobook, TO:KY:OO, a collection of cinematic images that showcase his signature style—rich contrasts, neon lights, and rain-soaked streets. The book was met with critical acclaim. It solidified his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary urban photography, whose instantly recognisable work blurs the lines between reality and fiction. In 2010 she transferred to Ubisoft Montreal to work as user experience coordinator on Rainbow 6 series using her training in cognitive science to help guide the design teams. In 2012 she moved to the US, working as UX lead at LucasArts, then as Director of UX at Epic Games, overseeing user experience on Fortnite. The franchise heads to ancient Egypt! This assassin sure does have a lot of creeds! There are so many, in fact, that the publisher gave up on numbering them. This particular entry is considered an action RPG and was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, though (to be fair) several of her sister studios had their hands in development as well. With a massive open environment to explore and tons of side missions to complete, our hosts will only just scratch the surface of its many offerings in their allocated hour. Will the first hour of the game showcase enough to get Tom and Chris invested in experiencing the rest? Tune in and find out if they think this slayer's doctrine is one worth following! Liam Wong is a name you have most likely heard of if you are interested in Photography. If not, you will have seen his work if you have ever looked for references of atmospheric neon at night on the streets of Tokyo. But, more than that, Liam captures atmosphere almost like a time capsule. You can palpably feel the mood of the scenes in the photos and the way they are colour graded are something you wish would be in a video game. In fact, he is a published author with Kickstarter's best-selling book of all time, called TO:KY:OO. The book includes words and contributions from Metal Gear Solid's Hideo Kojima and Bladerunner concept artist Syd Mead. His second published book, After Dark, was also a huge success. But have you ever wondered about the background of the award-winning photographer? Liam, originally from Scotland, actually started his journey in games! Working in UI all the way up to Creative Director at Ubisoft Montreal, and then Visual Director at the new Japanese studio Unseen founded by Ikumi Nakamura. In this episode we jump into talking about his career, moving countries, his inspirations and hearing some amazing advice. It's really rare to find someone who is incredibly humble and talented at this level, so to hear this kind of insight is invaluable. Presumably referencing people and not dobermanns. In a surprising twist, neither of our hosts have yet to play Ubisoft Montreal's 2016 action-adventure, making it fair game as the subject for this episode of 1H1D. Set in a fictionalized version San Francisco, the game puts you in the shoes of a hacker looking to take down the city's big brotheresque surveillance system. The astute will note that Ubisoft is no stranger to open-world action-adventure games, so they may be wondering how this one stacks up against the developer's other franchises. With just one hour to form their decision, will Tom and Chris experience enough of the actual game mechanics to get an accurate impression of this title? Listen as they join forces to discuss their experiences and discover if they think Ubisoft has predicted the future with acumen. What do you think? Let us know! This week CGM presents The Pixels & Ink Podcast with Brendan, Chris, Dayna and Jordan. The cast gives a quick—or not—rundown of where everyone has been. Jordan has been power-binging shows for review, like Loki Season 2. Chris took on the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 preview in LA with Sony. Brendan hung out with Intel in Malaysia. Dayna and Brendan headed to Iceland again for EVE Fanfest and had a great time learning about EVE Vanguard. Dayna saw something top-secret while Brendan covered some cool Nintendo previews like WarioWare: Move It! And finally, Dayna and Brendan got to check out Ubisoft Montreal for the Assassin's Creed Mirage launch! Now that they're all back in person, it's time to catch up on what everyone's been playing. To no one's surprise, Jordan had some thoughts on the Nintendo Direct from a few weeks back, and Dayna won't shut up about Fae Farm. But mostly TV has taken over Jordan's life with Loki, Fionna & Cake and Castlevania. Chris just finished up Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless and is currently working on his Marvel's Spider-Man 2 review, so no comment! About the Pixels & Ink Podcast Castors: Jordan Biordi: Part-time Ninja; when he's not busy combating the forces of evil, he's writing articles and making videos on the hilariously mediocre YouTube channel: Ninja-Jordan Reviews. Chris de Hoog: A writer and podcaster from Ontario, Chris discovered roleplaying games with Final Fantasy on the NES and has been overthinking them ever since. When he's not obsessing over Star Wars, you can find him streaming at twitch.tv/guildtwotaps Brendan Frye: Editor-in-Chief of CGMagazine, Brendan is as snarky as he is seasoned in the gaming industry. With over a decade working as a journalist and EIC, he has covered festivals and conferences, interviewed the industry's biggest names, and is always excited to see how the medium changes with new technology and fresh voices. Dayna Eileen: Executive Editor and long-time serial gamer, mom of two, aunt to many; she absolutely loves introducing the people she knows to her love for games and nerd culture. Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey are both powerhouse bestselling authors in their own rights. Now, they've merged their considerable talents in cosmic horror and urban fantasy to create the new novel, THE DEAD TAKE THE A TRAIN. In a New York City absolutely filthy with magic—monsters and the mundane intermingle. When that cohabitation breeds horrific problems—and it always does—you need people like Julie Crews to clean up the mess. But being a coked-out, broke ass, pig-pen disaster of a magician like Julie creates as many issues as it solves. Struggling to make rent and constantly getting screwed by her clients, Julie is desperate to score some real paying work. Complicating matters is the arrival of her childhood friend Sarah, the prim and pretty opposite to Julie's deadbeat, mage-punk lifestyle. Sarah's brightness is just what she needs, and the vibes are way more than platonic. But Sarah brought her own baggage to the big city. When Julie's pompous Wall Street ex-boyfriend Tyler calls, offering big money for a highly suspicious job, she can't refuse. Getting tangled up in his lies, and the innumerable arms of a dream-eating demon, will be least of their issues, though. Because Tyler's corporate job serves some seriously eldritch monstrosities, big ugly elder god-things on a schedule to consume their workforce. And maybe the world. This, of course, is all about to become Julie's giant mess to solve—and make infinitely worse along the way. My guest today is a Canadian video game designer and director. After graduating from the University of British Columbia with an MFA in creative writing, he joined Ubisoft Montreal where he co-wrote the script for Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. In 2005 he directed a sequel to that game, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and three years later released the oppressive and acclaimed sandbox shooter, Far Cry 2. In 2010 he left Ubisoft and joined LucasArts, then Valve, then Amazon Game Studios, before finally returning to Canada to work as creative director on the Ubisoft game Watch Dogs: Legion. A keen thinker on video games, my guest coined the term ‘ludonarrative dissonance' to describe when a game's story and mechanics sit at odds with one another. Today, he serves as creative lead at Ubisoft Montreal, the studio he first joined as a graduate, where is he working on Assassin's Creed Infinity. Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. The FTC has moved to appeal the recent court order ruling not to grant the temporary injunction to block Microsoft's Activision Blizzard merger from moving forward. This news comes a mere day after Microsoft won its court battle against the FTC, with the court ultimately ruling that Microsoft's acquisition would not "substantially lessen competition" in the games industry. We discuss the current state of the merger, as well as speculate about life after Microsoft's Activision Blizzard buyout. We'll also be talking about the 20 new physical releases announced at LRG3 2023 (including Castlevania Advance Collection, Clock Tower, Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, and more), how the banned Rainbow Six Siege player who swatted Ubisoft Montreal's offices in 2020 has finally received their sentence, the new study that says just 13% of video games released before 2010 are commercially available, and the news that New York is getting an Angry Birds café.Finally, class is in session with Professor Ryebread in our Gaming History 101 segment. The latest Assassin's Creed news is that Ubisoft has 11 new games planned. With Assassin's Creed Mirage around corner, I am curious if it will be enough to satisfy longtime fans. We also have rumors about an Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake starting to surface and the Assassin's Creed Nexus VR game. So I have to ask, is this too much? Will quality suffer with so much quantity? I also think that AC Mirage will not deliver what fans of the series are hoping for. And while I am really looking forward to Assassin's Creed Red, I have to wonder if this is an overcorrection after a lot of Ubisoft failures. Welcome to the latest episode of the SuperShow, your go-to spot for the hottest gaming news of the week! Jamie and Jonesy are back to serve you the hottest takes and trashiest opinions. We kick off the show by reacting to some snippets of dialogue sampled from Nicholas Cage in the Dead By Daylight public playtest ahead of the DLC release later this month. It's as brilliantly bizarre as you would expect. Next, we discuss the sentencing of Ubisoft swatter, Yanni Ouahioune. The 22-year-old, responsible for a terrifying fake emergency at Ubisoft Montreal and various DDoS attacks, has been sentenced to 3 ½ years of community service in France. Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka was caught up in an insider trading scandal, with implications that could land him in jail for 2 ½ years. We round off the show with exciting leaks about The Last of Us Part 3, suggesting a host of new characters and promising Ellie's continued importance in the franchise. If these leaks hold true, we could see "major filming" for Part 3 kick off as soon as this year.

The Salt Grows Heavy is their latest novel.
It's movie tie-in time! This month Morgan and Clayton are discussing TMNT for PS2 (as well as the movie that released along side it). I must admit, there was an element of selfishness involved in this podcast. I'm currently doing a creative writing course in my spare time (rather than in my news stories, ho ho) and one of the things I'm struggling with, weird as it is to admit, is the idea that I can write anything. I don't have to be bound by the rules of this world, or any world, or any rules. I can conceive of something totally and utterly new. And that's... I still can't quite wrap my head around it. But my guest on the podcast today, Cassandra Khaw, has long made their peace with this, producing works of - usually - pitch black horror that I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to imagine. The most famous of their pieces is probably the novella Nothing But Blackened Teeth, which was a USA Today bestseller when it came out roughly a year ago. So I wanted to find out from Cassandra, who seems to imagine new stories at the speed other people think of things to eat for dinner, where their ideas came from and how to shape them from there. I also wanted to find out where their life-long love of horror came from - and I was treated to a wonderful real-life Malaysian horror story when I asked. Cassandra isn't only a horror writer, though. They've written for Eurogamer and now they help write games. They've contributed to games like Fallen London and Sunless Skies and Falcon Age, and more recently were working at Ubisoft Montreal on Hyperspace (and some undisclosed projects) and, to get us right up to date, Gotham Knights. Cassandra's already gone on to two new game projects they're not able to talk about yet. They sound busy, right? Well, let's not forget their debut collection Breakable Things, coming out on 8th November. We talk about it in this podcast and it sounds great; it revolves around a theme of people pushing back against the world, like a werewolf out for revenge, or mermaids - who were pulled out of the ocean by humans, and impregnated - doing the same. There are some quieter explorations of grief too, including one tale that's personal and close to Cassandra's heart. They have two other books coming out next year, too. One is a twisted mermaid novella called The Salt Grows Heavy, due May 2023, and the other is a collaboration with Richard Kadrey called The Dead Take the A Train, due March. "Pathologic workaholic" is how they'd describe themselves, and on this evidence, I'd have to agree! Incidentally, the scary Malaysian film Cassandra mentions at the beginning is Impetigore, and the book recommendation is The Least of My Scars, by Stephen Graham Jones. Oh and apologies for a bit of keyboard clacking at the beginning of the recording - we relocate quickly to a quieter area. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Games User Research roles can vary depending on the size of your team, the studio, how your team interacts with the stakeholders, your seniority, and more. In this episode we are chatting a bit about what a day in the life actually looks like as a games user researcher working at Ubisoft Montreal with Tristan Carreiro-Blanc & Gabrielle Mourra. We'll discuss what it is like to work with game designers to plan a piece of research and what those tests can look like day to day. So, if you've ever wondered what it is like to be an embedded games user researcher this one is for you! ___________________________________ Since an early age, Tristan has always been drawn to video games and the appeal they have on different people. As an embedded user researcher at Ubisoft Montreal, he leverages the skills acquired during his studies in psychology to conduct research for video game productions. By collaborating and providing actionable insights to the design teams, he intends to leave his mark on the development of the games he works on. Gabrielle is a User Researcher at Ubisoft Montreal, with an academic background in Psychology and Marketing. She was born and raised in Haiti, a country that has suffered much political and economic turmoil. This led her to strive to understand what makes people tick and how they create the perception of the world around them. Since joining Ubisoft she has used her knowledge of human psychology and research methods to understand how players interact with games and help production teams give players the intended experience while playing.

Assassin's Creed is an open-world action-adventure stealth video game franchise published by Ubisoft and developed mainly by its studio Ubisoft Montreal using the game engine Anvil and its more advanced derivatives. Created by Patrice Désilets, Jade Raymond, and Corey May, the Assassin's Creed series depicts a fictional millennia-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through order and control. The series features historical fiction, science fiction and fictional characters intertwined with real-world historical events and figures. For the majority of time players control an Assassin in the past history, while also playing as Desmond Miles or an Assassin Initiate in the present day, who hunt down their Templar targets. The series took inspiration from the novel Alamut by the Slovenian writer Vladimir Bartol, based on the historical Hashashin sect of the medieval Middle East,[1] while building upon concepts from the Prince of Persia series.[2] The series's eponymous first title was released in 2007, and it has featured twelve main games in total, the most recent being 2020's Valhalla. Main games of Assassin's Creed are set in an open world and presented from the third-person perspective where the protagonists take down targets using their combat and stealth skills with the exploitation of the environment. Players have freedom to explore the historical settings as they finish main and side quests. Apart from single-player missions, some games also provide competitive and cooperative multiplayer gameplay. A new story and occasional new time period are introduced in each entry, and gameplay elements evolve from the previous one. There are three-story arcs in the series. For the first five main games, the framing story is set in 2012 and features series protagonist Desmond Miles who uses a machine called the Animus and relives the memories of his ancestors. Far Cry is a franchise of first-person shooter games, all of which have been published by Ubisoft. The first game, Far Cry, was developed by Crytek to premiere their CryEngine software, and released in March 2004. Subsequently, Ubisoft obtained the rights to the franchise and the bulk of the development is handled by Ubisoft Montreal with assistance from other Ubisoft satellite studios. The following games in the series have used a Ubisoft-modified version of the CryEngine, the Dunia Engine, allowing for open world gameplay. There have been five main games in the series, along with three standalone expansions; the first game, initially developed for Microsoft Windows, also saw a number of ports to video game consoles. The Far Cry games, due to the history of their development, do not have any significant shared narrative elements, but instead share a theme of placing the player in a wilderness environment where they must help fight against one or more despots that control the region as well as surviving against wild animals that roam the open spaces. The Far Cry games feature a robust single-player campaign with later titles offering co-operative campaign support. The games also offer competitive multiplayer options and the ability for users to edit the games' maps for these matches. The Far Cry games have generally been well-received for their open world gameplay despite their stories receiving mixed reviews and are considered commercial successes. Ubisoft reports that through 2014, lifetime sales of the Far Cry franchise has exceeded 20 million units.[1] Retro Renegades is the best gaming show on Tuesday Night! Seán is a singer known for his masterful renditions of folk songs and shanties, for his iconic shanty and tavern performances in the Assassin's Creed video game series, and his Shanty of the Week YouTube series, which has amassed over 300,000 views. Bénédicte is the accomplished music supervisor for Ubisoft Montreal and she was critical to the inclusion and recording of shanties in Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and Assassin's Creed: Rogue, which have sold over 25 million copies and spawned multiple shanty-specific soundtracks. This episode is closed out with Seán's brilliant version of “Roll, Boys, Roll.” Seán can be found at:https://seandagher.bandcamp.com/https://www.youtube.com/c/SeanDagher
