For Part 2 of our Summer Rep Report, film programmer Jessica Green joins to discuss Passing You By: Impostorism on Film, a new series she's programmed titled at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The series opens today and runs through August 15 and focuses on movies that all explore the act of passing—be it for another race, gender, class, or nationality. Film Comment editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish spoke with Jessica about some of the highlights from the lineup, including Rebecca Hall's Passing (2021), which adapts Nella Larsen's 1920s novel of the same name; Oscar Micheaux's silent-cinema classic, The Symbol of the Unconquered (1920), which was made in response to The Birth of a Nation (1915) and now features a score recorded by Max Roach; Omar (2013), a Palestinian film by director Hany-Abu Assad; as well as some lighter, yet thematically rich fare, like White Chicks (2004) and Coming to America (1988).

Omar is a 2013 Palestinian drama film directed by Hany Abu-Assad. It was screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Prize. Omar is a Palestinian baker who frequently scales a 35 foot wall on the West Bank barrier to visit his girlfriend, Nadia, a girl he hopes to marry. Omar and his childhood friends, Tarek and Amjad, have been preparing for attacks on soldiers. The pace of this movie picks up quickly and never lets up and ends in one of the most perfect moments to ever be captured on film. Listen to why we think Hany Abu-Assad beat Hollywood at its own game.
It's the morning after the night before in Hollywood on BEHIND THE LENS and we take a look at the good, the bad, and the very ugly from the Academy Awards, plus a look ahead to some of next year's possible Oscar contenders with our exclusive interview with writer/director HANY ABU-ASSAD talking HUDA'S SALON and joining us live is writer/director ALESSANDRO GENTILE talking about his directorial debut with LODO. Then onto much happier things as you'll hear my exclusive interview with writer/director HANY ABU-ASSAD talking about his latest film, HUDA'S SALON, "a feminist journey with controversial themes, a thriller with humor, a Shakespearean drama with a tragic love story." A powerful drama that speaks to so many themes unfolding in our world today. As always, Hany is open and candid, talking about halting production due to the pandemic and then returning to complete the film, his own bout with Covid and how that has impacted his outlook on life, the importance of telling this story which is based on true events, and of course, as Hany and I always do, digging into the development of the story and the crafting of the visual design which is always metaphoric and adds just another layer of storytelling. Still in a dramatic mode, take a listen as writer/director ALESSANDRO GENTILE joins us live and talks about his short film LODO, fresh off its world premiere at SBIFF and now on its journey towards Oscars 2023. Co-written with Marita De Le Torre, LODO marks Alessandro's directorial debut. A beautiful little gem, Alessandro melds life, death, and the hereafter into a touching story that copes with grief, fueled by a young boy named Eru mourning the loss of his mother. But the driving force of LODO is the performance of Jayden Enamorado who stars as Eru. WOW! A non-actor making his debut in LODO, Alessandro tells us all about his search for the perfect Eru and what set Jayden apart from the rest, as well as making the leap into directing, the challenges of shooting and designing visual metaphor, including underwater sequences, and more. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Acclaimed director Hany Abu-Assad is a real standup guy. Randle McMurphy…eh, not so much. But ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST has us rooting for McMurphy nonetheless, and for a young Hany, he offered a glimpse into the nature of oppression, and the power of creativity as a form of resistance. No, really! After Jordan and Hany have a deep and thoughtful conversation about all that, and about his new film, HUDA'S SALON…Jordan has one quick thing to say about something else deep: the new trailer for DEEP WATER. ***Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and FacebookWith Jordan Crucchiola and Hany Abu-Assad

This week Film Chat sharpened its knives to deliver four career ending eviscerations of four mediocre projects that have the audacity to call themselves "films".First up Sam takes on The Party, Sally Potter's film about a bunch of middle-class twats bumming about. He didn't care for it.THEN Sam tackles Brawl in Cell Block 99, S. Craig Zahler's film about Vince Vaughn being a righteous white guy doing some murders or something. He despised it.THEN Sam gets to grips with The Mountain Between Us, Hany Abu-Assad's film about a couple of self-obsessed rich wankers wandering about the wilderness. He thought it was shit.We also discuss how much we all fancy Colin Farrell. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
