Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay get comfortable in the nosebleeds while watching one of the quintessential degenerate sports movies, 'Major League.' Bombay leads off the lineup with a story about going to a Toronto Blue Jays game (drunk), and causing a scene with a giant stuffed bull as he hurled insults at players from the upper deck. Then the guys settle in as they discuss this Slobs vs. Snobs classic which brings back wild memories of acting like maniacs at ball games. The cast is filled with memorable societal rejects such as Charlie Sheen's felonious Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn, and Tom Berenger's philandering washed up pro. It even has a gruffed voice manager, and a JD-chugging announcer calling the games. Do your best Willie Mayes Hayes impression, and run don't walk to this unhinged episode. If you decide to not tune in then "up your butt, Jobu."
A touch of the ol' intellectual snobbery reared its head with news that the Defence Force dropped education criteria last year. As a person who had no time for school and could not wait to get out into the world, I was, and still am, very grateful for the idea that you choose the person and not the piece of paper when it comes to work. When I started, School Certificate and UE were what you needed to get into the media, or at least to have a crack. These days you need a degree. I can assure you the quality of those graduates has not changed one iota as a result of several years of study. The military is an awfully difficult place to recruit for, especially in a country like ours. Just what is it you are offering? We don't do a lot; we don't have a lot of equipment and we don't fight wars. We keep peace and patrol. So in a world where work-life balance and work from home and 4-day weeks are commonplace, average pay, Waiouru, and a lot of early rises aren't exactly calling cards. So you simply now need three years of school. You don't even need Level 1 NCEA. Here is the thing – some people aren't into school. I know this because I was one of them. Not all life choices, work choices, or skills are gained by passing Year 11 maths. The military is as much about attitude and aptitude – it's a structured environment and it is designed for a specific type of person. In places like America, they recruit people who may well struggle to get regular work. That is the way it is and it's a simple truth. They offer dental and medical in a country where you may not be able to afford it. They offer a career and travel and opportunity in careers and trades you may not have even thought of. Here you can be an auto technician, plumber or diver. They are the jobs on offer in the military with no skills. Could you do that in civilian life? No. Being good with an engine does not mean you are good in class. These are doors of opportunity If the military through necessity can make it work, who are these outside snobs who still believe that exams and results are the sole key to employment? A housing development for you. A housing development that once again shows how reality beats theory. Housing is a New Zealand obsession. We love housing and we long to own housing. It encroaches on immigration and whether too many people lead to higher prices. It encroaches on politics and the expectation as to what Governments do about housing and the prices of said housing. It involves social housing, emergency housing, KiwiSaver, incomes, the Reserve Bank, deposits and LVR's. It is all encompassing. In theory, if you could make building cheaper, we would be keen, wouldn't we? Yes, I hear you say. So what happened to Clever Core? Clever Core is Fletcher's prefab house building factory. The factory is closing. Why, I hear you ask? Because, to quote Fletchers, "it had not worked". Demand was the issue because there wasn't enough of it. If you had conducted a survey and asked, "could prefab housing help the so-called housing crisis in this country?" you would have got an overwhelming yes. Yet, did we follow our enthusiasm up with sales? Obviously not. Resistance from the building industry is another phrase Fletchers used. You see, as I have said many times, we are happy to moan about the cost of building, the cost of GIB, how cheap it is in Australia and how much a deck out back for the BBQ would be. But prefab? Oh, no thank you. Essentially, we are hosing snobs. It's sort of like with coffee - we moan about $6 for a flat white but pay it anyway. Not that there is anything wrong with that. If you want to pay anywhere between $10,000-35,000 per square metre that's great. But what Clever Core reveals is we don't actually want to save. Often, we don't actually want solutions. What we want is what we have, and like, except at a better price. We want what we can't have. What we can have, we don't want. Ask Fletchers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Meghan appears to have entered what fans are now cheekily calling a “breakfast war” with Gwyneth Paltrow, after a seemingly pointed exchange of lifestyle videos sparked speculation of simmering tensions between the two Montecito neighbours. It all began when Gwyneth posted a casual, makeup-free breakfast reel from her own kitchen. The Goop founder, clad in pyjamas, prepared bacon, eggs, and gluten-free buttermilk biscuits to the tune of Natalie Cole's *This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)*—the same track used in promotional material for Meghan's *With Love, Meghan*. The not-so-subtle similarities did not go unnoticed.Unlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! Get all our shows on any player you love, hassle free! Edmonton's pop-punk powerhouse Real Sickies are set to release their fifth full-length album, Under a Plastic Bag, on March 14, 2025, via Stomp Records. The album's first advance single, “Triage,” is out now, offering an electrifying glimpse into the band's knack for blending raw punk energy with sharp, melodic hooks. Known for their relentless touring and infectious anthems, Real Sickies have cemented their status as a standout act in the global punk scene, with even Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day calling them his favorite Canadian punk band. “Triage” embodies the chaos and resilience central to the band and their new album. Inspired by a harrowing car accident Ben Disaster and his family survived after returning from a European tour, the track reflects a surreal mix of panic and perseverance. After their car flipped on black ice, Ben and his wife emerged unharmed, finding their dogs casually on the highway. “As much as we wanted to go home, we went ice fishing as the shock wore off,” Ben recalls. This experience fueled the song, which took shape under producer Joshua Wells. “Josh really helped bring it to life. It wasn't complete until we let it out in the studio—it's chaos, but real. It asks, ‘What do you fix first?'” The accompanying video, directed by Jesse Nash, adds frenetic creativity with miniature models handcrafted by Ben, including a matchstick airplane and a glitter-covered Titanic. “It was so much fun,” Ben says. “Alvin and Snobs—our two stars—were tough but nailed it. The process also made me reflect on the album's environmental themes. We documented it all to avoid repeating it. The video is a deep dive into the psyche, asking again, ‘What do you fix first?'” This new album also marks a shift in the band's sonic landscape, embracing new wave, power pop, and indie influences. The band recorded with renowned producer Josh Wells (Autogramm, Black Mountain), who is known for using classic gear and recording equipment to capture the true essence of these genres. Wells' stamp is all over the album, shaping its sound with his meticulous approach to creating authentic new wave textures and power pop hooks. Discussing the first single, Wells said, “This song reminds me, at first, of being on adderall. Random thoughts, itchy eyes, the urge to rock really fast. But then, the song settles into a sick, focused motorik jam. Here we get some alien percussion floating down from another universe to join in and rocket ahead. For a moment, the human jam fuses with the aliens, but then the relationship deteriorates, the humans get mad and break out, the whole thing ending with a total meltdown.” D I S C O V E RBandcamp: https://realsickies.bandcamp.com/Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/realsickies/Youtube:https://youtube.com/stomprecordscanadaLabel: https://stomprecords.com/bands/real-sickies/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/@therealsickies/Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/artist/69zOtixHikb7pSLZGKYYRN?si=GZODBBr-TIaaF7n5d33HFA This Episode is brought to you by..Go to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Checkout my YouTube Channel with long form interviews from the Subversives | the History of Lowest of the Low. Episode 339 Do you have shelves? Is there shame on your shelves? No, not the layer of dust that signifies the neglect they suffer day after day, but rather, the games that remain unplayed. Games that have been purchased, shipped, delivered and yet the innards of the box remain untouched by your hands. Well if you do carry this burden, know this, you do not carry it alone. Ever been nervous to cook for a chef? In this episode of Seared, I bust the myth of the food snob, revealing that most chefs actually love being cooked for, regardless of the cuisine. I share personal anecdotes and explores the difference between genuine food enthusiasm and judgmental food snobbery, highlighting how the latter often stems from deeper psychological needs related to status, insecurity, and belonging. The conversation delves into the social context of food, examining how it can be used to create hierarchies and exclude others, while also acknowledging the diverse meanings food holds for individuals – from simple sustenance to cherished childhood memories.Beyond the kitchen, the episode explores how snobbery manifests in other areas like music, fashion, and cars, connecting it to the human desire for social validation. I also offer practical tips for cultivating a more inclusive approach to food, emphasizing gratitude, curiosity, and focusing on the shared experience of a meal rather than passing judgment. This episode encourages you to embrace the diverse world of food, appreciate the emotional connections people have with their meals, and celebrate the joy of sharing a table together, no matter what's on the menu.To learn more about my Soulful Guidance sessions, you can see the info here on Instagram: LEARN MORE To book a live reading, go HERETo book a remote reading, go HERETo join the wicked email list, go HERETo find out more about working with me, go to the website to find out more about how life and creativity coaching can work for you.You can also find me on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook.Watch the episode on YouTube as well!

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

“Foreign aid, welfare, that stuff is not working because it's robbing us of our self-agency,” says African entrepreneur Magatte Wade. She says there is only one way to lift Africa out of poverty, and it's not handouts; it's capitalism. Yet Black Lives Matter Inc. is made up of “self-proclaimed Marxists.” In this episode of "The Glenn Beck Podcast," Glenn asks Magatte what would happen to Africa if we got rid of fossil fuels. Her answer: “We're dead. We're sacrificial lambs.” Magatte exposes the “people who claim to care about black people,” like Bernie Sanders, Cori Bush, and Elizabeth Warren, saying they “use us as political pawns.” But there is still hope, and the answer to poverty in Africa looks surprisingly like Walt Disney's original vision for Epcot. In the end, Glenn and Magatte reaffirm self-evident truths that have become controversial in 2024: Math isn't racist, the American dream is still alive, and capitalism frees people.
