This week on Wise_N_Nerdy, Joe's out, so I called in one of my favorite people to cause absolute chaos: Josh Cooper from Uploads of Fun and my co-host on The Little Brown Pill. We somehow go from debating the worst fictional roommate ever to reliving embarrassing stories, Dragon Con, burgers, mushrooms, and enough coffee talk to make a barista question their life choices. If you've ever wondered what happens when two friends are given microphones and zero adult supervision... this is it. Then things really go off the rails. We answer the age-old question of how to become a full-fledged coffee snob, roast everything from Starbucks to mushroom coffee, argue over fast food burgers, tell stories that probably should've stayed private, and somehow end up discussing ThunderCats, Fight Club, Pokémon cards, and whether Pig-Pen would be the roommate from hell. It's the kind of conversation that only makes sense while you're listening—and somehow gets funnier the deeper it goes. If you like nerd culture, dad humor, caffeine-fueled debates, and two guys chasing every rabbit trail they can find without ever losing the fun, this episode is for you. Grab your favorite mug, hit play, and come hang out with us. Just don't blame us if you suddenly find yourself shopping for a pour-over kit by the end of the episode. William Makepeace Thackeray's "Book of Snobs" offers a keen exploration of social pretension, revealing how snobbery permeates all classes and can be examined like a subject in natural science. Through eloquent and illustrative prose, Thackeray positions himself as the author destined to dissect this phenomenon, highlighting its historical significance and its presence in everyday life. The themes of social hierarchy and the absurdities of human behavior resonate powerfully today, reminding listeners of the timeless nature of vanity and the quest for status. This insightful work not only entertains but also prompts reflection on the societal structures that continue to shape our interactions.

We open with the usual grab bag—the "foot fault" pun buried in a Justice Thomas opinion, reading Justice Alito's clerk-hiring tea leaves, and a detour into the metaphysics of conditional resignations and whether you can be confirmed to a vacancy that doesn't exist yet. Then to the merits: Keathley v. Buddy Ayers Construction, a 9-0 judicial-estoppel case that lets us ask where the doctrine even came from (Tennessee, 1857, apparently), and Abouammo v. United States, the venue case about a former Twitter employee who fabricated a document while the FBI sat downstairs. The venue talk wanders, happily, into the Yellowstone "zone of death," a C.J. Box thriller, Jim Comey's second career as a novelist, and an extended appraisal of watch brands. Is the mainstream rock shortage a corporate hit job? This week on The Heavy Metal Hangover, Rex and Duff are dissecting Billy Corgan's recent statement that rock music was intentionally and purposefully scrubbed from popular culture by the industry powers-that-be. We look at the validity of his claims, debate whether rock was pushed or if it simply walked away, and ask what it means for the future of guitar-driven music. But if the industry is trying to kill rock, the snobs aren't helping! We close out the show with a lighthearted look at the absolute absurdity of music elitism, using the classic movie High Fidelity as our guide. We laugh at our own inner "Championship Vinyl" clerks, poke fun at the gatekeepers who refuse to let people just enjoy a catchy tune, and remind everyone that at the end of the day, music is supposed to be fun.

Do you scoff at the idea of winning "only" $10 million? How about just a million? Jeremy Bradley talks about a colleague who won't buy a lottery ticket if the jackpot is too low. "I've never heard that before," says JB. "A million dollars is a million dollars. I'll take it." Later, JB wonders why people clench their teeth when they pet his dogs. "It worries me. Are they going to bite my dogs?" he laughs when he reminds listeners that it's a bunch of randomness on the show this week. Switching gears entirely, JB talks about eager retail employees who won't stop chatting, asking probing questions and following customers around the store. Also, JB talks about store security that generally stands around and has heads down while playing on their phone during their shift.

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay continue their XXXmas celebrations by putting all their money on frozen orange juice futures as they discuss 'Trading Places.' Bombay opens up the episode by recalling the time a car pulled over in the cold to offer him a ride, and how it all unraveled into an insane night. Then the boys discuss a classic comedy that isn't mentioned enough for its Christmas charm. It opens with wonderfully gritty location shots of Philadelphia, and features a Snobs vs. Slobs storyline with racial undertones. Director John Landis does the right thing and lets young rising phenom, Eddie Murphy, absolutely cook, but Dan Aykroyd pulls out one of his most memorable film performances as an unhinged destitute Santa. Peppered with memorable moments throughout, it's the closing act hijinks on the train which pushes the boundaries of absurdity, and features many of the film's funniest moments. This episode will have you wishing you spent the holidays shacked up with a savvy hooker with a heart of gold.

Adam, Joanna, and Zach react to a recent Substack post from wine influencer Pilar Brito about the need to tell people that mass market wine is bad. While there's certainly some folks who might respond positively to being told that the wine they like to drink apparently actually sucks, most consumers are likely to be turned off from the category if wine's already entrenched reputation for snobbery and elitism is reinforced right in their face.
