This final episode about Milos Forman's brilliant and deeper-than-expected masterpiece adaptation of Ken Kesey's very 1960's novel explores the subtle emotional power of the film's editing and how it establishes certain critical scenes.  Praise for the depth and intelligence of Nicholson's acting while also appreciating Brad Dourif and the late Will Sampson's performance as the Chief are also indulged.

Part 2 of my deep dive into Milos Forman's incredible 1975 film 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'. In Part 2 I get into a handful of scenes from the first third of the film: the introduction of Nurse Ratched, the first time we meet McMurphy, the sit-down between McMurphy and Dr. Spivey, and the first few scenes on the ward with the fellas and the nurses.

Casting, pre-production delays, and some context for the film in 1975. 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' is one of only three films to ever win "The Big 5" Academy Awards: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.  Listen to the episode to find the surprising other two films. Dana and Tom with 5x Club Member, Sara Shea (Host and Creator of Shea Cinema), discuss the Best Picture winner of 1975, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: directed by Milos Forman, written by Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman, cinematography by Haskell Wexler, music by Jack Nitzschke, edited by Richard Chew, Lynzee Klingman, and Sheldon Kahn, starring Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Danny Devito, and Christopher Lloyd.Plot Summary: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a powerful drama directed by Miloš Forman, based on the novel by Ken Kesey. The film stars Jack Nicholson as Randle P. McMurphy, a rebellious man who fakes insanity to avoid prison and is sent to a mental institution. There, he clashes with Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) whose strict control over the patients crushes their spirits. McMurphy's defiance inspires the other men, including the quiet and gentle Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), to rediscover their sense of freedom and individuality. The movie explores themes of authority, conformity, and the human spirit, ultimately showing the cost of resisting oppressive systems.Guest:Sara SheaHost and Creator of Shea Cinema; @sheacinema on X, IGPreviously on 12 Angry Men (1957) Revisit, Barry Lyndon (1975), Shampoo (1975), 2025 Post Oscars Reaction Show, Patton (1970)Chapters:00:00 Introduction, Cast, and Background for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest04:42 Welcome Back, Sara Shea!08:23 Mental Health - Then and Now23:57 Relationship(s) with Cuckoo's Nest32:25 Plot Summary for Cuckoo's Nest33:20 What is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest About?39:44 Did You Know?45:46 First Break46:32 What's Happening with Sara Shea?50:25 The Cinema Legacy Poll Rankings - #25-2101:05:44 Best Performance(s)01:31:09 Best Scene(s)01:38:08 Second Break01:38:48 In Memoriam01:39:13 Best/Funniest Lines01:41:04 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:50:36 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:55:14 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty02:02:57 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness02:11:51 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:19:23 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total02:21:02 Remaining Questions for Cuckoo's Nest02:27:16 Thank You to Sara and Remaining Thoughts02:35:35 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or...

“But I tried, didn't I? Goddammit, at least I did that.” Join Ian & Liam for our 305th episode as we get ourselves committed to one of the greatest American films ever made: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). Kev and Megs? They won't be joining us this week — Megs was last seen challenging Nurse Ratched's medication schedule and Kev tried to lift the hydrotherapy console to escape. Security is “having a chat” with both of them. This week we discuss: How Miloš Forman's direction created a sense of art imitating life. But who was Miss Ratched and who was Mac? Jack Nicholson's legendary performance as R.P. McMurphy — charming, chaotic, and dangerously alive.  But is it just Jack playing Jack? Louise Fletcher's cold, controlled terror as Nurse Ratched — is she evil, institutionalised, or the product of her system? The film's astonishing supporting cast — from Danny DeVito to Brad Dourif — and why the ensemble might be one of the best ever assembled.  Who asked for asshole Doc Brown? The real power struggle at the heart of the film: rebellion vs. routine, individuality vs. institution. Ian breaks down the film's narrative structure and why one sequence isn't necessary Liam reflects on the humour, the heartbreak, and the explosive final act — does any other ending hit quite like this one? Is Mac crazy? How would someone pretending to be crazy present themselves in this environment? We discuss the film's legacy: its Oscars sweep, its influence on pop culture, and its place in the “Great American Films” canon. Is McMurphy a hero, a catalyst, or a cautionary tale? What was Milos Forman trying to say in the film based on his personal lifestory? And finally, whether One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the boldest critiques of power and conformity ever committed to screen.

Porque entender Amadeus é, de certa forma, entender o próprio ato de criar.• 03m21: Pauta Principal• 1h07m27: Plano Detalhe• 1h19m06: EncerramentoOuça nosso Podcast também no:• Spotify: https://cinemacao.short.gy/spotify• Apple Podcast: https://cinemacao.short.gy/apple• Android: https://cinemacao.short.gy/android• Deezer: https://cinemacao.short.gy/deezer• Amazon Music: https://cinemacao.short.gy/amazonAgradecimentos aos padrinhos: • Bruna Mercer• Charles Calisto Souza• Daniel Barbosa da Silva Feijó• Diego Alves Lima• Eloi Xavier• Flavia Sanches• Gabriela Pastori Marino• Guilherme S. Although science fiction cinema did not begin in the USA it seems that by the 1950s Hollywood had tapped into the ravenous appetite the public had for the genre. The period is now known as the Golden Age of Science Fiction with an array of films ranging in style, topic and quality. Themes of space travel, alien invasion, nuclear fears and cold war paranoia are strewn across the decade. Meanwhile in Czechoslovakia Karel Zamen was working on making some cinematic masterpieces made for children based on the works of Jules Verne and other late 19th century authors. In 1958 he made the film Invention for Destruction based on Verne's novel Facing the Flag. In 1961 this was dubbed in English and retitled The Fabulous World of Jules Verne and distributed by Warner Bros. The visual style is based on late 19th century etchings and illustrations of Verne's novels which you can take a look at on this Instagram post. The film went on not only to inspire many prominent filmmakers like Hayao Miyazaki, Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam but also a cohort of writers who cite his film as being the origin for the style of steampunk science fiction. I spoke to two wonderful guests to understand the historical context and ongoing influence of the film. Thomas Lamarre is a Professor of Film, Media, and East Asian Languages and Civilisations at the University of Chicago. Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski run down titles you can get on physical media this week and, not gonna lie, there's a lot of baggage. There's the Mick Jagger film that say on the shelf for two years along with Lindsay Lohan's collaboration with Paul Schrader and William Friedkin's infamous Al Pacino murder mystery set within the gay community. Not to mention John Wayne playing Genghis Khan and the poor timing for an Eric Red horror film. But even controversy can be put aside for cinema sunshine. You can now get Milos Forman's Mozart film in its original theatrical incarnation. Maybe you don't even remember the issue parents had with one of the loveliest coming-of-age films of the ‘90s. And why would you say anything controversial about Carol Reed's masterpiece? All that plus Guillermo Del Toro's debut and the genius of poking fun at documentaries on this week's Blu-ray show. 0:00 – Intro 3:13 - Criterion (Performance 4K, Cronos 4K) 22:43 - Vinegar Syndrome (The Joy of Sex, Virtuosity 4K, The Canyons) 48:18 - Arrow (Cruising 4K) 1:05:54 - Kino (The Conqueror, Graveyard Shift 4K, Body Parts 4K) 1:24:14 - Sony (My Girl 4K) 1:37:39 - LionsGate (The Third Man 4K) 1:44:22 - Warner (Amadeus 4K) 1:55:51 – New Television on Blu-ray (Noble House, Documentary Now: The Complete Series) 2:01:01 - New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (Hard Truths) 2:05:13 – New Blu-ray Announcements

The vibes are bad this week, lil onions! Today we begin our two-part coverage of Milos Forman's Amadeus (1984), a WILDLY fictionalized tale of a feud between composers Antonio Sallieri, and his much more beloved contemporary Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Ross has the ick about Sallieri from the beginning, and shows a paraphilic fondness of Mozart's actual hair color. Carie takes a turn doing her version of Ross' History Corner with some important asterisks about the film's liberties with musical history. And the siblings are completely OVER Sallieri being theoretically CUCKED, both by Mozart and by God Himself.  SUPPORT US ON PATREON!

She has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design three times, for James Mangold's Walk the Line (2005), Madonna's directorial debut, W.E. (2011), and for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Phillips has also received a two BAFTA Award nominations for Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009) and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Her film career also includes Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals (2016), Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), James Mangold's Girl, Interrupted (1999) and 3:10 to Yuma (2007), John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig And the Angry Inch (2001), Mark Romanek's One Hour Photo(2002), and Milos Forman's The People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996). In between film and music projects, Phillips works as a freelance fashion editor and stylist, collaborating with photographers for publications such as Italian Vogue, V Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, German & Spanish Vogueand W Magazine. She continuously challenges herself by taking on projects that explore new expressions of her creativity. In 2018, she made her New York City Metropolitan opera debut, designing Nico Muhly's opera, Marnie. Miuccia Prada selected Phillips for her Iconoclasts project; to curate installations for the brands flagship stores in London and Beijing which included a short fashion film for the brand, which Phillips wrote and directed, called Passages. Her friend Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of GUCCI commissioned her to create content for a special issue of A Magazine he guest edited and to style a brand film directed by Gia Coppola. She has also collaborated on special projects with Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, Valentino and Swarovski. Phillips was an inaugural member of the TIMES UP coalition and was asked by Reese Witherspoon to design its logo. Lawrence Sher, ASC,is an American cinematographer and film director, best known for comedy films such as Garden State, The Dictator, and The Hangover series, frequently collaborating with directors Todd Phillips and Zach Braff.[ He made his directorial debut with Father Figures, which began a wide theatrical release on December 22, 2017, by Warner Bros. Pictures. He was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for the 2019 film Joker, directed by Phillips. As cinematographer of the 2009 film The Hangover, Sher described how a scene early in the movie shows the main characters on the roof of their hotel overlooking a stereotypical shot of the Las Vegas Strip; Sher indicated that he had tried to evoke the behind-the-scenes Vegas—after the characters wake up the following morning—by shooting a scene behind the hotels where the real action takes place. Actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher's visual style with enhancing the film's comedy, noting how Sher has "a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what's funny" and that "Some guys just can't shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he's doing." With the success of Zach Braff's Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff's 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here. In January 2020, Sher was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the movie Joker, but lost to Roger Deakins for 1917.

Movie of the Year: 1996The People Vs Larry FlyntIn this episode of the Movie of the Year podcast, the hosts dive into one of the most controversial films of the 1990s: The People vs. Larry Flynt. Directed by Milos Forman and starring Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love, this 1996 biographical drama tells the story of Larry Flynt, the notorious publisher of Hustler magazine. It's more than just a courtroom drama, though—it's a deep exploration of free speech, censorship, and morality, wrapped up in a real-life story that's as outrageous as it is thought-provoking.The People vs. the Real Larry Flynt: Champion of Free Speech or Just Provocateur? The conversation kicks off with a look at the real Larry Flynt, the man who built an empire by pushing the boundaries of taste and legality. Flynt was no stranger to controversy, and the film dives headfirst into his most famous battle—his 1988 Supreme Court case, Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, which became a landmark ruling in favor of free speech. The hosts break down how the film portrays Flynt as both a larger-than-life personality and a defender of First Amendment rights. But they don't shy away from discussing Flynt's contradictions. Was he truly fighting for free speech, or was he using the legal system to justify his often offensive content? This debate adds depth to the discussion and helps paint a fuller picture of Flynt as both a cultural disruptor and a complicated figure.Woody and Courtney: A Surprising Dynamic DuoThe hosts then turn their attention to the film's two central performances: Woody Harrelson as Larry Flynt and Courtney Love as his wife, Althea Leasure. Woody Harrelson delivers a career-defining performance, bringing a surprising amount of nuance and vulnerability to a character who could have easily been portrayed as just a crude provocateur. His portrayal of Flynt showcases both the man's relentless pursuit of personal freedom and his inner turmoil. But it's Courtney Love who really grabs the spotlight in this episode's discussion. Known more for her rock star persona than her acting, Love shocked critics and audiences alike with her emotionally raw performance as Althea. The hosts explore how Love's portrayal of Althea added a layer of tragedy to the film, grounding Flynt's often chaotic life with real human emotion. The chemistry between Harrelson and Love is another highlight, bringing a sense of authenticity to their relationship and adding emotional depth to the movie. The People vs Larry Flynt's Milos Forman: Master of MavericksOf course, none of this would have worked without the direction of Milos Forman, a master of telling stories about rebellious, complex characters. The hosts dive into how The People vs. Larry Flynt fits into Forman's body of work, particularly his fascination with figures who challenge authority, like in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus.Forman's direction is both restrained and provocative, allowing the larger themes of free speech and censorship to play out naturally through the story without hitting the audience over the head. His unique background, having lived through censorship in his native Czechoslovakia, gives him a particular sensitivity to these issues. The hosts discuss how this outsider perspective allowed Forman to bring a balanced approach to the story, making it not just a tale about a controversial publisher but a broader commentary on American freedoms. Why The People vs. Larry Flynt Still MattersAs the episode wraps up, the hosts reflect on why The People vs. Larry Flynt remains relevant today. Free speech debates haven't gone anywhere, and in many ways, they've only become more heated. The film's portrayal of the tension between personal freedom and societal standards still...
