Above the Rim follows high school basketball star Kyle Watson torn between Shep, a fallen athlete trying to redeem himself, and Birdie, a dangerous drug dealer who happens to be Shep's brother. Tupac Shakur's final theatrical film before his 1996 death is reason enough to revisit it.Then we get into the real conversation: Donald Trump has become everything racists feared a Black president would be. Barack Obama had to be practically perfect to even be considered; Harvard Law, Constitutional law professor, decorated Senator, devoted husband and father, scandal-free, measured, dignified. Every box checked. Meanwhile Trump arrived with business failures, fraud convictions, hush money payments, multiple affairs, and a career built on corruption. Ta-Nehisi Coates called Trump "the first white president;" not merely because he's white, but because his entire political existence hinges on the fact of a Black president. His campaign started with birtherism. Coates wrote: "It is as if the white tribe united to say — if a Black man can be president, then any white man, no matter how fallen, can be president." The double duo breakdown the cult classic's coverage of US incarceration through the decades, respectability politics within Black and Southern white culture, the guilty-innocent dichotomy through an abolitionist lens, and the relatability and timelessness of '90's buddy comedies. The comedy-drama follows two Black men, loudmouth Harlem grifter Ray and the no-nonsense Claude, during 1930's Prohibition era who are forced to team up on a bootlegging mission to Mississippi that could solve their money troubles with a New York gangster. But they run into more trouble when a crooked, racist white Sheriff hits them with a phony murder charge and they are given lifetime prison sentences. Originally recorded March 2026. -- GUESTStrina reynolds-tyler is the Data Director at the Invisible Institute, a Pulitzer Prize winning data journalist, and a native of the South Side Chicago. She leads Beneath the Surface, a project employing machine learning to identify gender based violence at the hands of Chicago police. trina works to document how communities unable to depend on the police are forced to create safety and accountability outside of the carceral state. As a data scientist, she centers the practice of narrative justice in her inquiries. trina is also an abolitionist and trained restorative justice practitioner, and on the Board of South Side Together; a community organization whose mission is to secure economic stability and advance human rights. Le film brille par son casting exceptionnel : ils sont toutes et tous là : Georges Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Don Cheadle, Andy García, Julia Roberts, Elliott Gould et Carl Reiner. Pur divertissement, il est emmené à bon rythme entre le film de gangster, le film dʹarnaque et le film dʹamour, avec brio, efficacité et séduction. Steven Soderbergh, réalisateur aux doigts dʹor, change complètement dʹunivers après Erin Brockovich et Traffic et propose une resucée énergique dʹun classique du cinéma de genre, cʹest-à-dire quelque chose entre lʹarnaque et le film de bande de potes. Oceanʹs Eleven est bien accueilli à sa sortie. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson and the late great Bernie Mac. Available to stream for free on Tubi.The random topic this week we tackle the complex and difficult incident that unfolded at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards when John Davidson, a Tourette's syndrome activist and subject of the nominated film "I Swear," involuntarily shouted racial slurs—including the N-word—while Black actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented an award.This isn't a simple story. It's a collision of disability rights, anti-Black racism, media responsibility, and institutional failure.What happened: Davidson, who has spent decades advocating for Tourette's awareness, experienced involuntary vocal tics throughout the ceremony. His condition causes coprolalia—the uncontrollable utterance of socially inappropriate words. When Jordan and Lindo took the stage, Davidson's tic produced the N-word, audible throughout the venue.The BBC's failure: Despite broadcasting on a two-hour delay (giving them time to edit), the BBC left the slur in the broadcast AND on iPlayer for 15+ hours. Yet they DID edit out other content, including a "Free Palestine" statement and political jokes. The selective editing reveals a catastrophic failure/purposeful behavior in judgment and priorities.The complications: This incident sits at the painful intersection of two marginalized communities. Davidson has no control over his tics—they represent the opposite of his actual beliefs. Yet Black attendees, including production designer Hannah Beachler, experienced real racial trauma. Lindo told Vanity Fair he wished BAFTA had spoken to them afterward. Host Alan Cumming's apology said "sorry if you were offended" was woefully inadequate.Why this matters for cinema: The film "I Swear" was nominated for multiple BAFTAs and won three awards, including Best Actor for Robert Aramayo's portrayal of Davidson. The movie exists to educate about Tourette's.
