The boys discuss the culinary achievements of White Castle milkshakes, Lexington's heritage as both the Athens of the West and the Horse Capital of the world and, in honor of Derby Day, the philosophy of sports.
Spotting people in Western attire going about their day is typical for Scottsdale. Pieces of public art featuring horses are spread throughout the city. In Old Town Scottsdale, the iconic sign of a cowboy with a lasso welcomes visitors. Western motifs and appreciation for horse culture saturate the city, whose official nickname is "The West's Most Western Town". It's even home to the world's largest Arabian horse show, at Westworld. Which begs the question: Is Scottsdale the horse capital of the Valley? Is it the most cowboy town in the metro area? In this week's episode of Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we explore the relationship between the city's increasingly cosmopolitan image and its old West history.
Lexington..is the second largest city in Kentucky...and the 60th largest city in the United States. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World", it is the heart of the state's Bluegrass region with many notable locations.. Like the Kentucky Horse park, The Red Mile, the University of Kentucky, and Transylvania University, with its Monroe Moosnick Museum, which was featured in episode two of Southern Oddities. But while the blue bloods of Kentucky want you to associate their state with thoroughbred race horses, bourbon, or even Abraham Lincoln, one rather famous taxidermized bear has become a state icon. Housed at the brick and mortar store, the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall, as the locals call him...Cocaine Bear...aka Pablo Escobear. The story behind this stuffed bear is quite interesting and fantastical, and I'm sure your asking yourself why is this stuffed black bear named Cocaine Bear? As you are about to find out, the story of Cocaine Bear is so exciting it could of easily stepped off the pages of a Hollywood script, but in order to tell it we will have to go back to the 1970s and 80s, during the height of cocaine.[FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA & MORE]TWITTER: www.twitter.com/SouthernOddPodINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/SouthernOddPodJARED'S TWITTER: www.twitter.com/jared_ordisJARED'S INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/jared.ordisORDIS STUDIOS PODCAST NETWORK & WEBSITE: www.ordisstudios.com[ADDITONAL INFORMATION]Questions or Business Inquiry, Email Us @ ordisstudios@gmail.comResearched was used for this episode of Southern Oddities, and we couldn't have made it possible without the journalism and dedication from these awesome sources of information: Roadside America "Story 50220" KY Forky "Cocaine Bear" Outdoor Hub "Pablo Escobear Bizarre Story of Kentuckys Cocaine Bear" NY Times "Cocaine and Dead Bear" Kentucky "Local News Article 91223657" The Vintage News "Cocaine Bear" Today I Found Out "Amazing Tale Kentucky Folk Hero Pablo Escobear Cocaine Bear" Grunge "The Incredible Story of Kentucky's Cocaine Bear" Atlas Obscura "Gather Round for the Ballad of Cocaine Bear" Wikipedia "Lexington Kentucky""Southern Oddities" is created & produced by Jared Ordis, an Ordis Studios production. If this were a normal year we’d be in the final days of the Keeneland Spring Meet and people would be flocking to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby this Saturday but of course the global pandemic changed all of those plans. Racing or no racing, Lexington remains the Horse Capital of the World and UK Libraries' Nunn Center for Oral History continues to document this signature industry. In this latest edition of WUKY’s award winning series Saving Stories, center director Doug Boyd highlights a recent interview with former Keeneland President Ted Bassett. The native Kentuckian talks about preserving the delicate balance between tradition and modernity at the iconic racetrack. This interview is part of a larger project between the Nunn Center, Keeneland and Thoroughbred Daily News called Life's Work .

Horseback riding is a dangerous sport, and while there are plenty of safety studies that concentrate on jump technology, or horse physiology, historically there hasn't been much attention paid to the impact rider strength and fitness can have. But as Horse Capital reporter Samantha Lederman tells us that's beginning to change, thanks to UK Eventing Team Strength Trainer Tony Sandoval.
