Rites of Spring (originally named Rite of Spring) is an annual spring semester music festival held at Rhodes. These days, the events usually happen over two or three days: the first day has games and parties and the second day has the main headlining performer and other opening acts. All kinds of artists have visited our beautiful campus for Rites of Spring, with some key examples being Three Six Mafia, The Black Keys, and Waka Flocka. It all started in the 1970s. Back in the good old days when rotary phones and Third Term were still a thing and when Rhodes was called Southwestern. Music was everywhere with genres like jazz, disco, soul, county and reggae blasting on radios across the country. Lynx to the Past host Kahlila Bandele '27 is joined by Randy Robertson '76 and Neil Mara '77 to record the origin of this beloved campus tradition.

YES WE'RE BACK AGAIN ! The Black Keys joined host Nicole Alvarez live from the Helpful Honda Sound Space at KROQ in Los Angeles for a special interview and performance, talking about their brand new album, Ohio Players, and giving a taste of what's to come on their International Players Tour kicking off in September. The Black Keys just dropped their 12th studio album, Ohio Players -- featuring the previously revealed single "Beautiful People (Stay High)" and more -- on April 5 via Nonesuch Records. Just before the release, Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach gave some lucky fans at KROQ an exclusive preview of the record and spoke candidly about their early days together, making the new album with a who's-who list of collaborators, and more. Since Dan and Patrick have known each other for most of their lives, Nicole started off the conversation by showing off a few photos of the duo when they were younger. “The first time I met Dan, it was like, right when I moved to the neighborhood,” Patrick remembers. “It was dusk and all the kids were riding bikes. I had grown up in a neighborhood where it was just like, really old people who just yell at us all the time. So, it felt like I had moved into the Goonies' neighborhood. They kind of had all the characters; I'm not sure which one I was, but there's definitely a Chunk and all that.” “I mostly remember his older brother Will, because he was a train enthusiast,” says Dan about his first impressions of Pat. “He was the local eccentric kid,” Patrick says of his brother. “You would focus on Will,” Dan adds. “You wouldn't see Pat or his brother, Michael.” Diving into their new album, Ohio Players, which features collaborations with Beck, Oasis' Noel Gallagher, Juicy J from Three-Six Mafia, and more, “on the last album we started to dip our toes into collaborating with people, which we really hadn't done much of… like when we worked with Danger Mouse on a record, it was just him and the two of us. So, it was only in the last couple of years that we actually felt comfortable, I guess being in the studio with other people creating stuff from scratch. Once we broke through that barrier, and we needed to start this new record, we thought we'd dig into the Rolodex a little deeper.” “The first person we thought of was Beck because he was someone who helped us out very early on, took us on tour very early,” he continues. “He always talked about making some music with us and it, we'd never gotten around to doing it. So we reached out to him and that kind of got the ball rolling -- and it was that spirit of collaboration that we carried on making the record.” “I think the only thing that you need to know is that we've been doing this for a long time,” Patrick says, “and I think we just really figured out how to really enjoy it seriously. This is a product of us working harder than we ever have, but having more fun than we ever have.” “We got to this collection of songs, they all work together and it is different than anything we've made," he explains, "and it was really hard to pick the first couple of songs that got shared. So, I feel like people really don't have a concept of what the album sounds like yet. ‘Beautiful People' is, by far, the most kind of ‘mainstream' thing on the album… I'm excited for people to hear the whole thing.” Tickets for The Black Keys' International Players Tour are on sale now. Don't miss The Black Keys' full interview and performance above -- and stay tuned for even more action from the Helpful Honda Sound Space at KROQ right here on Audacy. Welcome Back to Season 3!! We wanted to kick off 2024 with a bang. Especially this marking our 50th EPISODE! To say we were exciting to drop this episode is an understatement. We have been listening to this individuals music for a long time now. The influence him and his group have 20+ years in music is astounding. From 75+ guest appearances, multiple platinum and gold records, to even having a few songs go TikTok viral... We got to sit down with the North Memphis, Tennessee legend, Project Pat. When someone first makes it big, you might they want to purchase some jewelry, a nice car or even some new drip.@projectpat was in the market for a machine gun at the time since Memphis was on high alert. He shares “back in those days, people were kidnapping drug dealers mothers”. There was no way were going to pass up asking about the Oscar moment when Three Six Mafia took home the award for Best Original Song with It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp which was showcased in the film Hustle and Flow. It sounds like the boys “couldn't believe it” and did not think it was going to happen for them. They didn't even know that the song was going to be considered or that they would get asked to perform. If you're a fan of Project Pat and current hip-hop, you can easily here hear the influence from Pat and Three Six Mafia. From samples to old verses being reused and new features, Pat has had the opportunity to work with some of hip-hops biggest names. Knife Talk with Drake and 21Savage is a collaboration that we all would not know we needed. We were unaware of how tight his bond is with Metro Boomin. Maybe an upcoming project with Metro in the works?? He also shared with us that him and Pimp C were going to be working on a collaboration project before he had passed away. That would have been something for the ages! Ashley Imani, the former Houston, TX resident now turns social media superstar thanks to her viral videos that even got the attention of Usher is Back with a brand-new single called “Sipp'n” and we put Ashley Imani in the spotlight.Brad Gilmore:Why this record? “Sipp'n", why was this the record to put out and let people know, like kind of what is sipping, like what's the song about if you had to encapsulate it in a definition?Ashley Imani:Honestly, I'm just talking my trash on. I love the song, you know, by Three Six Mafia. So I was like, when I heard the beat, I heard that melody and then we kind of built from there. but I chose, I didn't even really choose this song alone. It was a collective decision. I actually had like listening sessions and everything and kind of had, I had people like kind of vote for their favorite song. And I have so many great songs that it was kind of like tug of war. Like some people like a different song, some people like this song, but I felt like this one is strong. It was strong to like come back out, like, boom, I'm here. This is what I do. And then I can start taking them down that journey and that road, and now they can start seeing like how versatile I am and what different type of music I make. But I felt like this song is relevant to the time right now. And I feel like it just jammed, like, you know.Brad Gilmore:We want to thank Ashley Imani for joining us on this edition of the CW39 Spotlight. She's actually going to be back next week to talk about more of her incredible career. But until next time, I'm Brad Gilmore, CW 39 Houston.

Welcome back to another Riot Act Reviews, where Steve and Remfry hone in on an upcoming album and give you their thoughts. This week we are looking at Diaspora Problems, the 4th studio album from Pennsylvanian hardcore punks Soul Glo. They might not be a massive name at present, but this is a band with some serious ambition, and this, their first album on Epitaph Records, looks set to be one of the most essential releases in heavy music in 2022. Quite how we describe this is a fairly exhaustive task, because there is a hell of a lot going on here, reference points from hardcore include Beastie Boys, Bad Brains and Dead Kennedys, in hip hop we could mention Scarlxrd, clipping. or Three Six Mafia and there is even some Rage Against The Machine or System of a Down style metal in here as well. Essentially, if you're a fan of forward thinking, manic and untamed music with ideas spewing out from every direction then you might want to listen to this record. We go mad for it, we're pretty sure you will too. https://soulglophl.bandcamp.com/album/diaspora-problems (Pre order Diaspora Problems because trust us ... you're gonna wanna hear this) https://youtu.be/c4vNQ3vEy24 (Soul Glo - "Jump!! Crunchy Black is one third of the Grammy award winning trio, Three Six Mafia. HipHop royalty, and one of the most respected groups to ever grace the stages of any show. In fact, Three 6 Mafia not to long ago made hiphop history with their controversial Versus battle with Bone,Thugs & Harmony. Never a stranger to controversy, Crunchy Black has had some traumatic situations in his life. He's been shot, tragically lost his own daughter at the hands of the streets and had numerous encounters with police. Still, with all of that being said, Crunchy has learned to respect the code of the streets. Listen in as he talks about everything from the accused rapes of Trey Songz, the death of Young Dolph, The alleged guilt of R. Kelly, and the controversial mouth of Charleston white, and then some. One thing is for sure, Crunchy Black has a story to tell.
I Am Pharaoh, Big Jon, and Nate are joined by Curt as we discuss the final College Football Playoff rankings released this past Sunday. On the music side we recapped last week's Verzuz battle between Bone Thugs N Harmony vs Three Six Mafia.
