LAFAYETTE, LA – Today, The Sin Bin announced their second annual SPHL All-Star Team. Twenty-one players – 12 forwards, six defensemen, and three goaltenders – were selected from all ten of the league’s teams. Last season, the first annual All-Star Team was selected in a fantasy exhibition Against the FHL's best in a game to decide Single-A hockey supremacy. The article was originally posted at https://thesinbin.net/presenting-the-sphl-all-star-team. In our special edition of our Inside the SPHL Podcast, SPHL Editor Mike Campos is joined by Columbus Cottonmouths writer Dawne Walters, Fayetteville FireAntz correspondent James Gentry, and Managing Editor Matthew Harding as the four hash out the 21-man final roster, coaches, and staff. Scroll down to the bottom of this article and listen to a very entertaining and informative show. This season’s All-Star squad was partially selected by a two-week fan voting period where fans picked one forward, one defenseman, and one goaltender to this year’s team. The polling, which took place from January 3 through January 17, amassed a total of 86,647 votes. “We had an overwhelming response from SPHL fans, and it exceeded our wildest expectations,” said SPHL Editor Mike Campos. The Sin Bin’s SPHL writers – Mike Finazzo, James Gentry, and Dawne Walters – compiled this season’s team with Managing Editor Matthew Harding. Additionally, The Sin Bin reached out across the league and received selections from half of the league’s teams. “I was so impressed with the teams’ willingness to participate in this project, and I hope to see even more teams participation next season,” said Campos. This year’s All-Star Team returns Huntsville Havoc defenseman Stuart Stefan and Mississippi RiverKings goaltender Brad Barone from last year’s squad. Barone was a fan vote selection along with Macon Mayhem defenseman Daniel Echeverri and Knoxville Ice Bears winger Danny Cesarz. Defenseman Nolan Kaiser from the Huntsville was selected unanimously by all of The Sin Bin writers and participating league personnel. Stefan was selected as the team’s captain, with Knoxville’s Jason Price and Evansville Thunderbolts forward Justin MacDonald named as assistant captains. Helming this mythical team are Peoria Rivermen coach Jean-Guy Trudel and Huntsville coach Glenn Detulleo. Trudel was named an assistant coach on last season’s team. Columbus Cottonmouths equipment manager Michael Nash and trainer Adam Norman complete this year’s squad. All ten of the SPHL teams are represented in this year’s All-Star Team. The Huntsville Havoc led all teams with five selections. The Knoxville Ice Bears and Macon Mayhem each had three players picked to the team. Campos stated, “There are so many talented players in this league, we could have easily picked a second team, and they would have been as good as the guys who made our squad. I am looking forward to hearing the feedback from the league’s fans and preparing to do this again next year.” The Sin Bin’s 2017 SPHL All-Star Team Roster # Pos. The Huntsville Havoc are a mainstay of the Southern Professional Hockey League, one of 10 outlaw minor league hockey teams affixed together in a region of the United States that isn't known for its winter ice sports. Havoc Director of Ticket Sales Cline Thompson explains why the SPHL and the team have been able to be successful, despite the unification of several other minor league hockey teams in the CHL, which helped cause a drastic ripple effect across the sports business landscape. Thompson discusses the Havoc's methods of marketing, especially against SEC football and other "town closers" in order to fill the stands during their season and continue to pack the house with crazy promotions such as "Weiner Dog Racing On Ice."
