#plugintodevin - Your Mark on the World with Devin Thorpe

I'm not a financial advisor; Superpowers for Good should not be considered investment advice. Seek counsel before making investment decisions.Watch the show on television by downloading the e360tv channel app to your Roku, AppleTV or AmazonFireTV. You can also see it on YouTube. When you purchase an item, launch a campaign or create an investment account after clicking a link here, we may earn a fee. Engage to support our work.Devin: What is your superpower?Troy: I would say I kind of have two characteristics that have really helped me, particularly in the last, say, 10 years of my career. The first one is self-discipline… Number two would be tenacity.Success in business and athletics often comes after facing and overcoming challenges. It takes a special kind of resilience to keep going when things get tough. Troy Helming, CEO of EarthGrid PBC, has that resilience in spades. He's a successful entrepreneur and athlete who has won numerous competitions.Troy shared his story on today's episode of Superpowers for Good. I was impressed by how he didn't let age or setbacks hold him back. In his early fifties, he was competing with 20-year-olds in the Ninja Warrior competition. He didn't win the whole thing, but he did win some of the regional events.Troy's entrepreneurial journey has been just as impressive. He's the founder and CEO of EarthGrid, a company that is developing a new technology for tunneling and excavating. EarthGrid has raised millions of dollars in funding from investors, including $4.5 million from regulated investment crowdfunding.Troy's success is a testament to the power of perseverance. He's not afraid of hard work or challenges. In fact, he seems to thrive on them. When asked about his fundraising efforts, Troy said, "I had to put in a lot of work... I had to give over 2,400 pitches."Troy's story is an inspiration to us all. It shows that we can achieve our goals if we are willing to put in the hard work and never give up.Having raised so much from the crowd, I asked Troy for some tips:Have a compelling hook. Your message needs to grab attention amidst the constant bombardment of information people receive. A unique hook, like a science fiction analogy, can intrigue potential investors.Reinvest capital in advertising. Helming suggests reinvesting 10-20% of raised funds back into advertising to boost the campaign's reach.Simplify your message. Potential investors should quickly understand your company, its traction, achievements, potential upside, and expected timeline for returns.Build a strong network. Start with your network and gradually expand by investing in marketing and creating compelling content.Be sure to bookmark this article so you can find them when you need them!Disclaimer: I am an investor in EarthGrid.tl;dr:* Troy Helming, CEO of EarthGrid, discusses his company's innovative plasma tunneling technology.* EarthGrid's technology offers significant cost and time savings compared to traditional tunneling methods.* Helming shares his experience in raising capital, including the challenges and successes of crowdfunding.* He emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and tenacity in overcoming obstacles and achieving goals.* Helming's journey highlights the power of perseverance and innovation in making a positive impact. How to Develop Self-Discipline and Tenacity As a SuperpowerOn this episode of Superpowers for Good, Troy discussed the importance of cultivating self-discipline and tenacity. He believes these two characteristics are essential for navigating the challenges and setbacks that inevitably arise in life.Illustrative Story:Troy shared how he had to give over 2,400 pitches to potential investors to raise capital for EarthGrid. Despite facing rejection after rejection, he never gave up. He knew it was a numbers game and that eventually, he would find the right investors.Tips for Developing the Superpower:* Start with small, achievable goals.* Embrace challenges and view setbacks as opportunities for growth.* Practice delayed gratification.* Surround yourself with supportive people.* Celebrate your successes along the way.By following Troy's example and advice, you can make self-discipline and tenacity a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileTroy Helming (he/him):CEO, EarthGrid PBCAbout EarthGrid PBC: EarthGrid invented plasma tunnel boring robots (think Star Wars light sabers) that consume no water, have no emissions & bore tunnels 100x faster at 1/10th the cost. Mitch talks more about his proposed weapons company that would be transparent from the ground up. Helming this transparent company would allow Mitch to sit down with every defense contractor, look them in the eye, and explain that they need to become as transparent as possible with their company. Mitch also proposes a way for him to do this using his connections at the embroidery shop if the military doesn't want to wait around for the weapons company. Mitch then explains how any nation receiving aid from the US must have these guarantees in their constitution: Equal rights, freedom of press, freedom of religion, right to trial by jury. If a nation doesn't have these guarantees in their constitution they must amend it or lose US aid. Mitch will also look into restricting trade to those nations that do not have these guarantees and opening trade to those that do.Support the Show.

Andrew brings a seasoned career in eCommerce technology, from leadership and entrepreneurship to digital marketing, marketplaces, and product management. His insights encompass effective digital marketing, marketplace strategies, and conversion optimization. Complementing this is Matt, a former investment banker experienced in M&A for IP-based assets, Direct-to-Consumer Brands, eCommerce, and technology. Matt's expertise covers operational finesse, finance in eCommerce, and data interpretation. Together, they offer profound insights for novices entering the eCommerce landscape and veterans aiming to refine strategies. Their wisdom creates a tapestry of knowledge vital for success in the dynamic realm of online retail. Tune in for a masterclass in navigating the pathways of success in Amazon entrepreneurship. Takeaways:  Benefits of 3P Selling: Transitioning to 3P selling allows the seller to have greater control over their brand. It enables building a stronger brand value, which is essential for long-term success. Direct-to-Consumer Sales:3P selling empowers sellers to connect directly with their consumers. Direct-to-consumer sales provide insights into customer preferences and behavior, aiding in better product development and marketing strategies. Inventory Management:3P selling allows for better inventory management and optimization. Sellers can avoid overstock or stockouts by using data-driven insights. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA):FBA provides efficient and reliable fulfillment services, enabling a better customer experience. Sellers can leverage FBA to focus on growth and marketing rather than handling logistics. ERP Integration: The transition might involve ERP integration to manage inventory and other processes efficiently. However, integration can be implemented strategically to avoid excessive costs. Incremental Approach: Transitioning doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing decision. Sellers can start with select SKUs and gradually expand their presence on Seller Central.     Quote of the Show: Transitioning from 1P to 3P is driven by the increasing need for control and growth in a competitive environment. Brands are pushed to adapt due to macroeconomic challenges and Amazon's demands. It's a shift towards achieving better results and seizing control of growth Links :Channeled – LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/channeled-net/ Channeled – Website: https://www.channeled.net/ Andrew – LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ahurl/ Matt – LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mhelming/  Special Offer: Get a free account audit by visiting https://www.channeled.net/audit/ , and additionally get a $1500 bill credit in the first 3 months if you partner with Channeled.  You can learn and request a meeting by visiting: https://www.channeled.net/argometrix/  Want To Level Up Your Business? Matt, formerly an investment banker specializing in IP-based assets, including Direct-to-Consumer Brands, eCommerce, and Technology, offers his expertise in operations, finance, and data. Together, they discuss the strategies and insights necessary for Amazon sellers to think beyond the platform and build a brand with the highest value. Tune in to gain invaluable knowledge and unlock new opportunities for your business!Takeaways:Sellers should think of themselves as brands rather than just sellers on Amazon. It is important to understand the brand's identity, purpose, and value proposition to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. Amazon should be seen as a sales channel within the broader context of a multi-channel strategy. It is not a separate entity but a part of the overall business strategy. Sellers should stay updated with the evolving marketplace on Amazon. This includes keeping track of industry trends, competition, and consumer behavior to adapt their tactics accordingly. While shoppers may convert on Amazon, it is essential to engage with them on other platforms, such as social media and the brand's website. Building a direct relationship with customers and showcasing brand value creates more value and loyalty.Quote of the Show:Understanding a brand's positioning is crucial when entering the Amazon marketplace. Just because someone is a service provider or helping with positioning, it doesn't mean they will automatically support your brand's goals. Brand owners need to tell the story of what led them to bring the product to market and attract investors. This will clearly display their unique value proposition and positioning on Amazon.Links:Channeled – LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/channeled-net/ Channeled – Website: https://www.channeled.net/ Andrew – LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ahurl/ Matt – LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mhelming/  Special Offer: Get a free account audit by visiting https://www.channeled.net/audit/ , and additionally get a $1500 bill credit in the first 3 months if you partner with Channeled.  You can learn and request a meeting by visiting: https://www.channeled.net/argometrix/ Ways to tune in:SpotifyYouTubeWant To Level Up Your Business? Welcome back to another episode of Locked on Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast! Drake and Dave continue Miami hate week and dig deeper into Florida State's matchup against the hapless Hurricanes, offering reasons why FSU should win resoundingly in this matchup and the implications of doing so, and bringing back a special guest (yup, it's Max!) to join in the fun! First, the guys discuss big picture issues with Mario Cristobal's Canes this season which are particularly exploitable in this matchup, including a putrid offense, first half scoring woes, and key defensive deficiencies, among many other things which revolved around the question: is there a massive regression around Tyler Van Dyke or is is the coaching and scheming of Josh Gattis and Mario Cristobal.  Next, they bring in a special guest that you know and love to discuss key statistical areas that Florida State should particularly look to exploit, including and especially explosiveness defense, which suits well an FSU offense that's thrived on chunk plays. If Middle Tennessee State could do it, Jordan Travis then should just have an absolute field day against the Canes right?  Finally, they weigh the implications of a Florida State win against the Hurricanes, especially on the recruiting trail, and discuss why this is a virtually must-win (and perhaps must-big-win) matchup. Implications around recruiting, perception and optics among her fanbase, Norvell and company have a chance to step up to the plate and go yard against the University of Coral Gables.  As always, thanks for making Locked on Seminoles your first listen each and every day. Welcome back to another episode of Locked on Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast! Drake and Dave continue Miami hate week and dig deeper into Florida State's matchup against the hapless Hurricanes, offering reasons why FSU should win resoundingly in this matchup and the implications of doing so, and bringing back a special guest (yup, it's Max!) to join in the fun!First, the guys discuss big picture issues with Mario Cristobal's Canes this season which are particularly exploitable in this matchup, including a putrid offense, first half scoring woes, and key defensive deficiencies, among many other things which revolved around the question: is there a massive regression around Tyler Van Dyke or is is the coaching and scheming of Josh Gattis and Mario Cristobal. The Journey
Disrupting the Beauty Binary with Matthew Herman of Boy Smells

The Journey

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2022 15:11

The world often wants to put people into boxes, to sift everyone into categories. It just seems easier sometimes: rich or poor. Successful or not. Worth listening to or worth tuning out. Right or wrong. Male or female. But there are people who are pushing back on those categories – people who believe that life can be richer without harshly-drawn lines. Matthew Herman of Boy Smells — a rapidly-expanding queer-owned personal fragrance and product brand — is trying to change that. “For us, it's just about showing up… whatever way you want to show up, it's right,” Herman said. “And you can show up differently every single day, because you are whoever you want to be. And that's great.” Herman cut their teeth in the fashion world, working for innovative brands like NastyGal. When they talked about the issue of binary luxury with friend and business partner David Kien, they discovered a hole in the industry: a place where comfort was non-binary. “We had been talking as individuals — or even men — who weren't shopping at Levi's or these kinds of  more rugged, stereotypically-masculine stores,” Herman said. “We thought, ‘It'd be great to have this store with home stuff, but fashion and all sort of other things.'  And then we were [said], ‘Well, let's start with one thing. Let's just think about like candles.'”The result was Boy Smells, a brand focused on identity, specifically its concept of genderfulness. This idea implores a new kind of consumer — namely the 18-25 set — to harness their power across the gender spectrum and oppose traditional marketing nomenclature like “genderless” or “gender-neutral.” On this episode, Matthe explains what it all means, how he worked to create this concept from his own kitchen, and what it took to ship and scale during a pandemic. Main Takeaways:Follow the Curiosity: Sometimes, the path to success isn't as linear as we'd like. It has winding detours and setbacks. But if you find something you're passionate about – something that makes you excited and curious — you can find yourself at the threshold of opportunities you never would have seen had you played it safe.Roll Up Your Sleeves: As we all know very well by now… the world can change in an instant. You might not think you'll be in charge of certain aspects of a business, but be ready to jump in when you're needed. Helming an endeavor means being ready to handle things that you never thought you'd be handling, and mastering skills you never thought you'd have to learn.Don't be the smartest person in the room: Great leadership is the leadership that has wise counsel and takes into consideration the thoughts of others. Bring people in. Ask questions. Take advice – your business will be better for it.---This season of the Journey is produced by Mission.org and brought to you by UPS. In this episode of Fitter & Faster, strength and conditioning coach Nate Helming joins host Emma-Kate Lidbury to talk through all aspects of strength training. We kick off by talking about why strength training is important for triathletes and what it should look like. Helming gives us plenty of examples of movements and exercises he likes to see endurance athletes master, regardless of their experience, ability, or aspirations. We talk about the role that strength, conditioning, and mobility work can (and should) play in injury prevention—and how improving efficiency of movement is the triathlete's holy grail. We reference this article when we talk about how minimizing risk in the weight room can actually create greater risk of injury (Helming is a big advocate of using free weights versus machines in order to make exercises more functional). We also discuss the hormonal response to heavy lifting—and how this can be of huge benefit to the endurance athlete. RELATED: The Right Way to Find and Use Your Maximum Lifting Weight Helming underscores the importance of regular mobility work that doesn't need to be complicated or lengthy—mini-sessions of 15 minutes or less a day are perfect, he says—and these help us get to know our bodies better and identify potential injury sites when training volume ramps up. You can check out the exercise he mentions, the couch stretch, in his video demo here. And, of course, it wouldn't be Fitter & Faster without our Gear Up section with resident gear guru and Triathlete executive editor Chris Foster. We talk through the myriad of gear and equipment options out there when it comes to doing strength work at home. We kick off by discussing the TRX—and, as promised in the show, you can find a few different TRX workouts here. We reference the "I, Y, T" exercise, a video demo of which you can find here. Foster also references one of his go-to at-home strength routines using the EmPack OG. He said: "It's a 30-minute routine, you can't put the pack down during that time—if you do, you stop the timer and you owe 30 burpees." The routine involves 30 seconds of each of these movements (beginners use 25lbs, intermediate 35lbs, advanced 45lbs+): Curls Front squats Overhead walk Overhead press Right side oblique dips Left side oblique dips Bent row Front lunges    RELATED: Strength Training for Triathletes

Helming proudly from small town Cambridge, Ontario Canada, Block Parent is a three-piece unit focused on playing coming of age, self-deprecating punk rock. By making waves in both the thriving underground punk scene throughout the 519 and greater punk community of Ontario, they have played alongside The Dirty Nil, Fucked Up, '68, Single Mothers and more. Following their first vinyl release from Thousand Island Records and Pink Lemonade Records, Block Parent constructed a debut LP that perfectly captures their relentless energy and heartfelt comedy. Their new self-released album ‘Sick Year, Bro!' cements Block Parent's punk rock identity into a tight 30-minute package. Listen to the album: https://blockparent.bandcamp.com/album/sick-year-bro The band says, "Growing up is a painful and beautiful experience. It mutates and morphs ya into the chud loving critter you never thought you'd see reflecting back at ya in a pool of your own vomit. We hold onto the pains of nostalgia with our beer-soaked fists while we anxiously hide our disdain and discomfort for a scary and confusing world....but we have each other. We'll grow old together and we'll absolutely get weirder. In the end, all we can do is embrace our flaws, accept our self-destruction, face our anxieties and hold on to what we love....past present and future. Here's to you Cambridge, you beautiful and disgusting wretched hive of friendship and isolation. It's not much....but it's ours." Twenty Pearls premieres Friday, March 26th on Comcast's newly-launched Black Experience on Xfinity Channel, and will be available on-demand nationwide beginning March 30th About: Comcast NBCUniversal is excited to announce the exclusive premiere of the documentary film Twenty Pearls: The Story of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, arriving Friday, March 26 on its newly-launched Black Experience on Xfinity Channel, available on X1, Flex, and on-the-go with the Xfinity Stream app. From award-winning filmmaker Deborah Riley Draper, produced by Coffee Bluff Pictures, and narrated by Phylicia Rashād, Twenty Pearls closely examines the founding and legacy of the first Black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, which is now regarded as one of the most significant and influential Black organizations in history. The documentary tells a powerful story of sisterhood. In 1908, nine Black women enrolled at Howard University made one decision that would change the course of history. Opening Banter:    In The News: Brad: ‘WandaVision’ Early Buzz: Marvel’s Series Is Funny, Sharp, Bizarre and Unlike Anything in the MCUHT and Peter give their reactions. Brad runs down a few more reactions. Ben: ‘WandaVision’ Has More VFX Shots Than ‘Avengers: Endgame’, Will Feature Some of Marvel’s Biggest Setpieces  Brad: Here’s How the Marvel Studios Shows on Disney+ Were Influenced by ‘The Mandalorian’“It was wonderful to see the amazing job that Disney did and Disney marketing did in “event-izing” that— that was one of the things I was always concerned about, we wanted to ‘event-ize,’ we want to make people understand these projects at Disney+ are as important as the projects going into theaters, and we want to feel that same excitement. … And also the fun, week-to-week discussion, which I guess happens on all week-to-week television, but sometimes the series drop all at once on the streaming services. And Disney, I think, was very smart to do the week-by-week [release], because that conversation that happens every week between episodes, I think it’s very important and frankly, is just fun.” Do you ever think Disney was planning for a binge model? Mention: Kevin Feige Hopes ‘WandaVision’ Will Expand the Definition of What a Marvel Studios Project Can Be Ben (og Chris): Marvel Phase Four Hasn’t Been Affected by the Pandemic, According to Kevin Feige“If the run we had in 2018 and 2019 had gotten disrupted this way, in the buildup to Endgame, it would have been a bigger headache,” Feige said. “With these projects, it worked well,” and added that “he debut dates for the upcoming Disney+ shows shifted only “by a matter of weeks.”   As of now, Black Widow is set to open May 7, 2021, followed by Shang-Chi on July 9, 2021, Eternals on November 5, 2021, and Spider-Man 3 (or whatever it ends up being called) arriving December 17, 2021. Meanwhile, Disney+ will debut Falcon and the Winter Soldier on March 19, 2021, while Loki will premiere sometime in May. HT: ‘Black Widow’ is on Course for Theaters, ‘Black Panther 2’ Won’t Feature a CGI Chadwick Boseman, Kevin Feige SaysWill Black Widow hit theaters in may 2021? Brad: Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion’ Series Will be Smaller Than the Comic, but Will be “a Showcase” for Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelson “Well, there were more characters in the Secret Invasion comic series than there were in Endgame so, no. It’s not that but it very much is a showcase for Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelson and tapping into the paranoia elements of the Secret Invasion comic series that was great with the twists and turns that that took. So, that’s certainly our focus more than, ‘Can we cram in more characters than Endgame?'” HT: ‘Deadpool 3’ Will be Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Confirms Kevin Feige“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.” Can Deadpool really exist within the MCU? Who would we love to see Deadpool interact with?   Other Articles Mentioned: How ‘WandaVision’ Director Matt Shakman Went From Starring in Sitcoms to Helming a Superhero Sitcom Love Letter [Interview] Kevin Feige on How ‘WandaVision’ and Other Marvel Disney+ Shows Will Expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe [Interview]   All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today’s show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com.  You can subscribe to /Film Daily on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (RSS).  Send your feedback, questions, comments and concerns to us at peter@slashfilm.com. EarthFund Global's ambitious plan to finance and accelerate national transitions to renewable energy is starting in Greece, where we spoke with founder Alysia Helming. #127: Ontario Center Investigative Reporting Leads To Proposed Bill

FL1 Daily from FingerLakes1.com

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2020 10:41

On the heels of FingerLakes1.com's ongoing investigation into the Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Canandaigua, State Senator Pam Helming [R-54] has announced yesterday on Wednesday, July 1st that she shall co-sponsor legislation to establish an independent and bipartisan commission to investigate the deaths of New Yorkers who passed away from COVID-19 while residing in state-regulated nursing homes. Senator Helming burdens some of the blame upon the shoulders of Governor Andrew Cuomo and Commissioner of Health for New York State Howard Zucker for the lack accountability and transparency, which was partly sparked by confusion with the reporting of COVID-19 cases and deaths at nursing homes and long-term facilities. "They've got to stop trying to point the fingers and to deflect blame, and they've got to stop issuing directives from the comfort of the Capitol," Helming told FingerLakes1.com. Rather than fully playing into state politics, she's far more concerned with ensuring a greater quality of life for residents – and hence why she sought to create a commission on this subject. "We've got to put their quality of life above politics," she continued. Keeping her promise of bipartisanship and independency, her proposed commission would consist of five members: one each appointed by the Senate Majority and Minority leaders, the Assembly Speaker, as well as the Assembly Minority Leader, and chaired by an appointee of the New York State Attorney General. This commission would also possess the power to subpoena as a part of their investigations, all of which would be funded through the existing state budget. Instead of pampering to party politics and affiliations, Helming insists that she is in the pursuit of the truth, obtaining answers, and ensuring future oversight for these facilities, and especially its residents. "So, we need to hold this independent investigation to figure out what went wrong, what we can do better going forward to prevent a similar situation," she explained. Ideally, Helming suggests that conversations should occur among nursing home providers and local health agencies to strategize better care options and treatments of residents, especially with the looming resurgence of a second wave of COVID-19 lurking around sometime this upcoming fall. "Really what needs to be happening is a conversation with the providers, with a local Department of Health employees to develop better strategies to provide better care and a better quality of life to folks who are living in nursing homes and assisted-living residents," she stated. For Helming, she hopes that by creating this commission, the committee would be able to accomplish her goal in collecting data, facts, and information to assist public officials and policymakers in crafting sounder health protocols and procedures at nursing homes while simultaneously taking stock of the initial costly and fatal lessons learned from the pandemic here in New York State. In the meantime, however, constituents have continued raising concerns to her office in the past and present regarding Ontario Center and she has reached-out to the state Department of Health on numerous occasions by sending letters and making phone calls even dating back "pre-COVID," notifying them about the complicated situations that she is all too familiar with, especially as a Canandaigua resident. In response to FingerLakes1.com's ongoing investigation about Ontario Center, Helming has publicly commented on the situation, encouraging residents and concerned citizens alike to contact the state's nursing home complaint hotline to relay their comments. On today's Daily Debrief, we ask, what a bipartisan and independent commission do to investigate the death of COVID-19 residents in nursing homes, and why it matter?

Science-fiction space opera on television is experiencing a real renaissance in the last few years, and at the tip of the spear is The Expanse. It's a sprawling, richly-conceived adaptation of the James S.A. Corey novels of the same name, set in a universe where mankind has colonized the solar system, but the same problems of paranoia, war, and distrust follow us out into space. The show nearly died last year when its previous home, Syfy, abruptly canceled it in the middle of its third season, but a vigorous fan campaign (and the largesse of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos) saw the prestige space drama move to Amazon Prime Video. Now, the fourth season is out, the budget is bigger, and the crew of the Rocinante is in even more hot water than ever.   Helming the ship is showrunner Naren Shankar, a decades-long veteran of science fiction television from Star Trek: The Next Generation to The Outler Limits. I was lucky enough to sit down for a podcast interview with Shankar to talk about the show's rescue from cancellation, the scope afforded them by their new administrators, and what awaits the characters (and audiences) in a surprisingly planet-bound season 4. Also, we muse on the passing of the late, great Star Trek actor René Auberjonois. (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. This is Gustavo, writing this podcasts summary. I felt the need to write this as an homage to the truly last Emporer of French Fashion. As you all know, Karl Lagerfeld passed away about a week or so ago, and with that comes the end of a tremendous legacy, an innovative designer, and lastly perhaps the last FASHION designer ever left. Obviously, not discrediting any of the currently established designers but Karl Lagerfeld was on his league of his own. Over 50 years as a designer and an extensive resume, that Lagerfeld shaped the fashion world of the 20th and 21st century. Helming the French Houses of Chanel, Chloé, Fendi and his own. He truly understood the demands of the clientele.I can say with all honesty that the Chanel Haute Couture and Martier's d'Art shows were the most inspiring. Lagerfeld really pushed the envelope for the brand, always finding new ways to reinterpret the houses DNA. Showing us new ways to wear tweed, the combination of black and white, and the many ways to accessorize jewelry. A big Bravo! to the production team. They have turned the Grand Palais into many amazing production sets that were well paired with each collection. Which was your favorite? The Chanel Grocery Store? Versailles Gardens? The inside of a casino? Passitirere? the iceberg? or the feeling of sitting under the Eiffel Tower? Whichever it is, they are surely embedded in our minds. But for the rest of us that never truly met him and only know of him through videos, print and social media, we have his legacy to inspire us for the next 50 years. Lagerfeld would have wanted the current fashion designers to keep looking forward, and that is what we will do.Fashion Junkies!!ListenSubscribe to iTunes

LAFAYETTE, LA – Today, The Sin Bin announced their second annual SPHL All-Star Team. Twenty-one players – 12 forwards, six defensemen, and three goaltenders – were selected from all ten of the league’s teams. Last season, the first annual All-Star Team was selected in a fantasy exhibition Against the FHL's best in a game to decide Single-A hockey supremacy. The article was originally posted at https://thesinbin.net/presenting-the-sphl-all-star-team. In our special edition of our Inside the SPHL Podcast, SPHL Editor Mike Campos is joined by Columbus Cottonmouths writer Dawne Walters, Fayetteville FireAntz correspondent James Gentry, and Managing Editor Matthew Harding as the four hash out the 21-man final roster, coaches, and staff. Scroll down to the bottom of this article and listen to a very entertaining and informative show. This season’s All-Star squad was partially selected by a two-week fan voting period where fans picked one forward, one defenseman, and one goaltender to this year’s team. The polling, which took place from January 3 through January 17, amassed a total of 86,647 votes. “We had an overwhelming response from SPHL fans, and it exceeded our wildest expectations,” said SPHL Editor Mike Campos. The Sin Bin’s SPHL writers – Mike Finazzo, James Gentry, and Dawne Walters – compiled this season’s team with Managing Editor Matthew Harding. Additionally, The Sin Bin reached out across the league and received selections from half of the league’s teams. “I was so impressed with the teams’ willingness to participate in this project, and I hope to see even more teams participation next season,” said Campos. This year’s All-Star Team returns Huntsville Havoc defenseman Stuart Stefan and Mississippi RiverKings goaltender Brad Barone from last year’s squad. Barone was a fan vote selection along with Macon Mayhem defenseman Daniel Echeverri and Knoxville Ice Bears winger Danny Cesarz. Defenseman Nolan Kaiser from the Huntsville was selected unanimously by all of The Sin Bin writers and participating league personnel. Stefan was selected as the team’s captain, with Knoxville’s Jason Price and Evansville Thunderbolts forward Justin MacDonald named as assistant captains. Helming this mythical team are Peoria Rivermen coach Jean-Guy Trudel and Huntsville coach Glenn Detulleo. Trudel was named an assistant coach on last season’s team. Columbus Cottonmouths equipment manager Michael Nash and trainer Adam Norman complete this year’s squad. All ten of the SPHL teams are represented in this year’s All-Star Team. The Huntsville Havoc led all teams with five selections. The Knoxville Ice Bears and Macon Mayhem each had three players picked to the team. Campos stated, “There are so many talented players in this league, we could have easily picked a second team, and they would have been as good as the guys who made our squad. Helping runners move faster and injury free is the mission of Nathan Helming. A former Ironman qualifier, Nathan Helming runs programming for San Francisco Crossfit with a focus on helping runners and triathletes become better rounded athletes. He’s taking this passion into a startup called The Run Experience which guides athletes through strength, conditioning and problem solving to reach their goals through online webinars. Frustration with chronic injury spurred by a too narrow focus on conditioning caused Helming to seek out SF crossfit with its philosophy of a more balanced approach. He is now adapting his experience to propel athletes past their limitations. Lessons:     1.    Be process focused: set aside fear of the outcome and engage in the task at hand.     2.    Understand that you have a choice at every moment.     3.    Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

In the short lived but much beloved Spanish horror scene, after Paul Naschy and perhaps the more internationally inclined Jesus Franco, one name stands out above all the others: Amando de Ossorio. Starting off as a documentarian and veering off briefly into adult film, de Ossorio is known on these shores for quirky late night favorites Night of the Sorcerers, Fangs of the Living Dead and Demon Witch Child...but without a doubt, his most famed creation is those zombified agents of repression, those soullessly evil enemies of the living, the Knights Templar...better known as the Blind Dead. Helming four films of fairly consistent quality and suffused with all the grim, fatalistic atmosphere the Iberian horror film is known for, de Ossorio would both share actors with and lose films to the aforementioned Naschy and Franco before terminating his decade and a half in cinema after one final disappointment... Join us as we delve once more into the grim world of Spanish horror, and talk Amando de Ossorio!   Week 30  Podcast of the Blind Dead - the films of Amando de Ossorio

Barbell Shrugged
145- Strength Training for Runners & Run Training for Strength Athletes w/ Nate Helming

On this week’s show, we take on a fresh new topic, at least for us - Running. That’s right, heel striking, to Pose or not to Pose, the importance of strength training for endurance athletes, we get into a little bit of everything. As you might guess, heavy barbells are no less beneficial to road warriors, even ultra-marathon wacko’s! We recently got a chance to chat with Nate Helming in between talks at the National Endurance Sports Summit in Princeton, New Jersey. Nate coaches out of San Francisco Crossfit, right alongside some of the best coaches on the fitness scene today. That list includes Kelly Starrett, Diane Fu, and Carl Paoli. He also shares his expertise on The Run Experience, a cool online training resource for runners. Maybe the guy’s just a little unassuming at first, but before our conversation I had no idea he was so skilled and polished as a coach and thinker. More to the point, his talks and running workshops at the Summit were interesting, well-paced and high-value for the audience. You have to take note of folk’s like this when you meet them, because that kind of pace and polish doesn't come cheap. These are skills you have to earn the hard way, over many years and endless repetitions. Nate’s central thesis is that a strong runner is a better runner, which is, of course, right up our alley. But it’s not a straight forward idea, at least not as much as you would guess. If asked, Nate will tell you that he doesn’t exactly know what it means to “run strong.” He just knows that more runners have to start acknowledging the health and performance benefits of heavy barbell training. You cannot push strength so hard that it becomes a competing training focus that’s clear. But you have to train with the intent of lifting more and more weight. You have to squat, pull, and push because it’s inherent functional. It teaches you just how you should produce force…quickly, efficiently. That translates to reduced injury risk and improved performance out on the road. Right, so that much is clear. If you want to improve your running, make sure you are constantly working on your mechanics under progressively heavy barbells. But the line is hard to draw. How much strength is enough? Well, it’s hard to say. There is a line, but something tell’s me that Nate has only begun experimenting with his methods. He will continue to surprise I’m sure as more of his data ripens, and he accumulates more coaching experience. So much for runners making their way towards the barbell, but what about the other way around? What do/should strength, and power athletes learn from the running world. Which of Nate’s methods might apply to you? Again, it’s hard to say. He does have one clear bit of advice for the strong amongst us who want to improve their running skills. “Be patient. Have some respect.” Anyone who has suffered for a decade or more in pursuit of barbell glory know’s that the skill of strength takes years and years to cultivate. Your body must be built up over time to serve that function. Think of endless little waves of construction work, new bundles of muscle proteins piled high and turned over constantly, year after year. Consider your adapted structure, your fascia and skeleton. Be in awe of what your fine-tuned and lightening quick, nervous system can do. The same is true of amazing runners and their earned form and adaptations. You don't know the work that's been put in. Consider optimal pose, the adapted foot and endless bands and chains of road forged connective tissue. These legs are likely slow and of the slow-twitch variety, but never kid yourself. To run at the highest levels is to suffer, immensely, daily. Don’t underestimate that strength. And more importantly still, don’t underestimate the benefits that would come to you if you would only work on your running, modestly at first and with respect. I must say, none of this is news to me. Nate is preaching to the choir. I've learned an endurance lesson before. Some twelve years ago I made my first visit to Columbus, Ohio to train with Louie Simmons of Westside Barbell. I had no business making the trip. At the time, I only had about $200 bucks in my checking account, just enough to pay for a week’s rent at the shittiest local motel you ever saw. But that was fine by me. One, there was a Waffle House located conveniently between my slum and the gym. The waffles and egg’s were cheap, the coffee and syrup, plentiful. But that was just my problem. I was a complete fat ass! I don’t mind saying so. I had built a life around this culture. “To be as strong as possible, do what is necessary. Grind you bones, stuff your face!” By the time, I made it to Westside I was over 350 pounds in bodyweight. Louie told me exactly what Nate would say today, had I been in similar form. We didn’t talk about advanced programming ideas, not at the start at least. And no, we didn’t talk about the latest tricks Louie was working on with his chain and band resistance methods. It was none of that. Louie’s first and best advice for me was to get in shape.“Hey listen, dude. You know, lifting heavy weights is just like fighting…Am I right? You wouldn’t dare jump in the ring with a known killer, would you? No, not now! You gotta get in shape first! You gotta suffer for a while. There are a lot of repetitions that need to take place before you earn the right to fight the champ. So that’s you. You want to lift record weights? You gotta get yourself in proper shape first.”Starting from that day forward I made hard sled dragging and sprinting a key component of my training, and it certainly paid off. The more time I spent conditioning myself, the stronger and more explosive I became. Even though, I was lifting maximum loads all the time for the better part of twelve years, I never wore down. I never had a serious injury. I owe that to Louie’s advice. I just wish I would have taken it earlier! Nate, I won't be experimenting with powerlifting and running anytime soon, but maybe we can hook up soon and share some training ideas. Who know's, maybe there's a runner inside me still.Cheers, Chris Moore
