Emily Colbert Cairns of Salve Regina University and Nieves Romero-Díaz of Mount Holyoke join Jana Byars to talk about Early Modern Maternities in the Iberian Atlantic (Amsterdam University Press, 2024). It is the first volume to emphasize women's personal experiences and their life trajectories as mothers within the Peninsula and across the Atlantic. Although an official discourse that defined the conditions of motherhood emerged in the eighteenth century, before this period there were many different articulations of motherhood through which women negotiated hierarchical relationships, power struggles and alliances. While the individual experiences were unique and depended upon the positionality of race and class, the complexities of being a mother were universal. The wide variety of written and visual documents included in this volume highlight women's voices in the first person along with more subtle references to motherhood as well as silences. This collection broadens our understanding of the complexities of motherhood, addressing the pressures of becoming a mother, miscarriage, the acts of giving birth and lactation and the ordeals of raising children. In this episode, Jacinta speaks with Dr Katie Brennan, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Salve Regina University, about the 19th-century German feminist philosopher Hedwig Dohm. Brennan speaks about Dohm's diverse philosophical modes, from salon-hosting to political essays to novellas, and how her participation in the urgent and burgeoning feminist discourse of her time shaped her philosophical approach. Dohm draws on distinct areas of philosophy, such as rights and existentialism, leading to a unique conception of human nature that Brennan is currently in the process of reconstructing. We speak about several of Dohm's texts, with ongoing reference to her novella Become Who You Are, which still resonates today. Finally, Brennan wraps up the episode with some research advice, and reflections on the methodological challenges she's faced while researching the under-served Dohm.

President Trump's support of IVF as an effective means to increase fertility belies the complicated nature of this treatment and the ethical, moral, and philosophical implications of it. For another, they might wonder what happened to the other embryos which were discarded and worry about their place in their family or even with their parents. This conversation explores the psychological and societal implications of IVF and cloning, emphasizing the potential moral catastrophes that may arise from these practices. The discussion highlights the importance of family as a foundational element of society, the consequences of broken families, and the need for healing and love in addressing these issues. The data tells us that every minute of every day, 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. Ashley Bendiksen has turned her personal experience with domestic abuse into a calling to prevent domestic violence and help victims. Bendiksen is an author, domestic abuse survivor, speaker, and an award-winning activist. She also graduated from Salve Regina University in 2013 as the valedictorian. She is also a nonprofit founder, co-owner of a life coaching agency for youth, and founder of the Blue Hearts Project. Bendicksen experienced dating violence that began a cycle of abusive relationships and trauma at age 14. She speaks publicly about her struggles with self-worth and unhealthy coping habits that led her to her most damaging relationship where she said, “I became homeless, penniless, and was forced to drop out of college by my abuser. I only finally escaped after I was severely physically attacked.” In the days following her attack, Bendicksen says a moment of clarity helped her take steps to turn her life around. She began telling her story to raise awareness and serving on boards and committees of organizations that supported victims of domestic abuse. She chose domestic violence awareness as her central advocacy focus as Miss New Bedford, MA, and continues to leverage her experiences to serve others work in victim services and the justice system. Today we take a moment to highlight another great program in higher education, Salve Regina University. We were lucky enough to speak with Department Chair and Dance Program Coordinator, Lindsay Guarino, about this unique program. Lindsay also has had a hand in changing the program and has been involved in some incredible projects. Located in Rhode Island, this program has specialty focuses as well as flexibility. We hope you enjoy our chat today with Lindsay Guarino.Program overview:At Salve Regina University, the bachelor's degree in dance offers a transformative education through the study of dance in a liberal arts environment. Through the curriculum, students engage in critical dialogue, physical practice and creative production as they study dance history, theory, technique, performance, composition and pedagogy. Students develop their artistic voices across a range of styles, including jazz, contemporary, tap, hip hop and ballet. The curriculum emphasizes jazz studies with courses designed to honor, investigate and practice jazz as a historically Black American art form best understood through awareness of one's own identity and culture. Community is at the heart of Salve Regina's dance program with an environment that encourages and supports individuality, personal creativity, dynamic exchanges of energy, risk-taking and resilience - all enduring values within the jazz aesthetic.About Lindsay:Lindsay Guarino is a jazz dance artist, educator and scholar. As associate professor and department chair of Music, Theatre and Dance at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI she has grown the dance program from a minor to a B.A. focused in jazz and justice. As an educator and a leader, Lindsay prioritizes community at the heart of her practice and seeks to cultivate spaces where individuality is celebrated and recognized as vital to personal and collective growth. Lindsay's commitment to revealing and preserving jazz dance in connection to its roots led her to co-edit Jazz Dance: A History of the Roots and Branches (University Press of Florida, 2014), and the award winning text Rooted Jazz Dance: Africanist Aesthetics and Equity in the Twenty-First Century (UPF, 2022). Through the National Dance Education Organization, Lindsay developed and planned two special topics jazz dance conferences (2016 & 2019) and developed and taught Jazz Dance Theory and Practice for their Online Professional Development Institute. She appears in and consulted on the documentary Uprooted: The Journey of Jazz Dance (2020), available on HBO Max.Thank you for listening Jam Fam! My guest today Dr. Cody Morris is an asset to the field, his goals include improving the practice of BCBAs, by Improving assessment and treatment methodologies regarding problem behavior and addressing organization challenges in delivering services.Today we discuss Assent, its importance, and how to gain Assent even when a client is not yet speaking. Dr. Morris makes a very important comparison in definitions between Consent and Assent. Consent: the affirmation that an individual who is legally authorized gives permission for themselves or another person to participate.Assent: the affirmation that an individual who is not legally authorized to provide their own consent, affirms their willingness to participate. Both of these are incredibly important, Consent has many legalities that affirm participation. Assent on the other hand, can be difficult to confirm when a child has limited or no communication skills. There are multiple ways to gain assent. 1, through Verbal statements or 2, through Behavior Allocation. Assent can be obtained when a student's behavior allocated the confirmation to engage through choice. Choice does not mean the student decides all goals and treatment, but as Dr. Morris and I discuss small choices that affirm engagement and build to grander decision making skills. In our conversation today, Dr. Cody Morris and I discuss some important fundamentals of behavior analysis that heavily involve Assent as a best practice. You can find out more about Dr. Morris's work and research in the provided links. #autism #speectherapyWhat's Inside:Consent versus Assent in affirming participation. How to gain assent with children who are not yet speaking?Tools and tips for gaining assent.Assent through choice in treatment.Assent through behavior allocation. How to provide gradual choice despite communication skills.Mentioned In This Episode:Dr. Cody Morris on LinkedInCody MORRIS | Assistant Professor | Ph.D. | Salve Regina University, Rhode Island | Department of Psychology | Research profile

Humanitarianism and Security: Trouble and Hope at the Heart of Africa (Palgrave MacMillan, 2020) contends that the search for stability and peace remains central to the political environment within the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Despite some positive political and economic progress observed in the Central African Region and the DRC in particular, the future of the region remains uncertain. Due to many unaddressed issues, including the multidimensional manifestations of humanitarian crises, the region is fragile with the potential for a relapse into violent conflict. Moreover, the DRC's humanitarian crises have yet to be effectively addressed as consequences and promoters of insecurity and violence. Based on the "humanitarian-security-development" paradigm as an inclusive operational framework, Humanitarianism and Security articulates the trend of peace recovery in the DRC as contingent upon issues of security and the refugee/internally displaced population crisis. It claims and demonstrates that effective solutions must incorporate considerations of pre-colonial security dynamics, the place and role of identity within the humanitarian discourse/strategies, the determinants of transitional public security (TPS), and the various dynamics regarding the return and re/integration processes, into one operational framework. This framework must be accompanied by a continued effort to build strong local institutions as a critical component to the sustainability of operations. This revolutionary fitness drink comes in several delicious sparkling and non-carbonated flavors, and in powder stick packets that you can add to water. Unlike many of its primary, energy drink competitors, CELSIUS has no preservatives, no aspartame, no high fructose corn syrup, is non-GMO, with no artificial flavors or colors, and no added sodium. It's kosher and vegan certified, soy, gluten, and sugar free too. If you haven't tried them yet, grab yourself some CELSIUS today! The two biggest sectorsMedical Technology and Energy have been the two biggest sectors that I've been trading in recent years. I've reduced my energy involvement in the last four or five months because I think it has topped out for now. However, my portfolio is about 25% Med Tech at this point. It's very heavy because I think Healthcare and Med Tech are both good, at least through the end of this year and early into the next. They give you an offense and a defense. Medical devices, procedures, and surgeries are going to continue to happen, regardless of what the FED is doing, where inflation is, or what the economy as a whole looks like. These companies should typically perform well in any economic cycle. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: While speaking at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island, Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan alluded to the court's recent decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization—stating: “The very worst moments have been times when judges have essentially reflected one party's or one ideology's set of views in their legal decisions.” During another recent speech, she suggested that in order to maintain legitimacy, the court should more closely mirror public sentiment. In response to Vice President Kamala Harris' statement that the Biden Administration should distribute Hurricane Ian disaster relief based on “equity”, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' office rebuked Harris and emphasized that relief will be distributed based upon need—not race or gender. While speaking at the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health prior to Hurricane Ian making landfall, President Joe Biden warned the oil industry against using a natural disaster to boost prices. Nate Hochman—Staff Writer at National Review—joins the show to discuss his article, “Federal Judge Vows to Stop Hiring Law Clerks from Yale Law School.” Judge James C. Ho of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has pledged that he will no longer hire clerks from Yale Law School due to the school's intolerance towards political debate and active censorship of speakers on campus. Judge Ho stated: “I would contend that cancel culture is one of the leading reasons why citizens no longer trust a wide variety of once-leading institutions.” 83-year-old Democratic State Senator, a grandmother, Toby Ann Stavisky's Twitter account was used to “like” several pornographic images—the Senator and her chief of staff both denied being the ones who “liked” the X-rated material.

Africa has had more UN peacekeeping missions than any other region in the world. Today more than fifty thousand troops are deployed with UN operations on the continent. Despite this, violence still continues in some of these areas and in some places, there is anger over the UN's continued presence. Just last month, anti-UN protests erupted in Goma and Butembo, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, when citizens accused the UN of failing to contain violence by armed groups. While in Mali, UN troop rotations were suspended for a month after the government arrested 49 soldiers from Ivory Coast, saying they had arrived in the country without permission. Ivory Coast said the soldiers were part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali. So, what is the future of UN peacekeeping in Africa? Host: Alan Kasujja (@kasujja) Guests: Dr. Cedric de Coning, a research professor at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and Senior Advisor at the African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes and Dr. Yvan Yenda Ilunga, Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Salve Regina University.
