The Commonwealth Club is pleased to welcome Asa Hutchinson, Republican governor of the state of Arkansas, and the current chair of the National Governors Association (NGA). Governor Hutchinson will discuss the critical role he has played in workforce training, infrastructure and new economy jobs not only in his state, but also across the country, leading the bipartisan National Governors Association. The NGA works alongside governors in their efforts to restore public health and continue a robust, sustainable economic recovery. When he became chairman of the NGA last year, Hutchinson pledged “to build on the areas where Republicans and Democrats agree and work to remove the obstacles in Washington where we can.” As chairman, Hutchinson has focused on K–12 computer science education, promoting his state's best practices, in addition to engaging other governors on their strategies for success, to help increase computer science literacy needed for the jobs of the future. A dedicated public servant, Governor Hutchinson was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Arkansas. In 1996, he won the first of three successive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his third term in Congress, President George W. Bush appointed him director of the Drug Enforcement Administration and later as an undersecretary in the newly created Department of Homeland Security. His experience has established him as a national resource for his expertise on trade, energy, national security, and education. The governor has been invited to the White House several times to join discussions about health care, Medicaid and education issues. The governor is the former co-chair of the Council of Governors and the former chairman of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, Southern States Energy Board, and the Southern Regional Education Board. Two hundred Texans lost their lives unnecessarily during the February Texas power outages, dying from bad energy policy that prevented their homes from being heated. Jacki reviews a trend-setting law that just passed in Texas that stops cities from actually exacerbating the problem; the law literally puts a ban on bans – on natural gas and other forms of energy. It makes it illegal for local municipalities to implement the Paris Climate agreement unilaterally, restricting access to life-saving natural gas and other reliable sources of energy. Jacki speaks with Sanjay Narayan, a member of the Texas Radiation Advisory Board, about why the nation should build more nuclear energy, the most reliable form of energy during the February power outages in Texas. Next, the AFL-CIO and Texas Public Policy Foundation are working to destroy a proposed law in Texas that will give $44 billion in government handouts over the next few years to foreign companies and others in exchange for rolling out even more unreliable energy sources – despite February’s deadly energy shortage. While this program is praised for “creating jobs,” Brent Bennett, Ph.D., policy director for Life:Powered, says the state routinely grants waivers for the job creation requirement, especially to wind energy producers, leaving taxpayers footing an enormous bill for which they get nothing in return. Jacki represents Texas on the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission and heralds the passage of a resolution urging the reigning in of ESG investment criteria. Among other things, ESG advocates often seek to divest from U.S. oil and gas. Then, Jacki interviews Federico Chavez-Torres, director of operations at Energy Ledger, who says that a new blockchain solution for oil storage could have prevented the Colonial Pipeline hacking and could prevent future hacks. Media reports of “Eco-Anxiety” show that American kids are terrified and depressed about climate change. Katie Tahuahua, mother and member of the Life:Powered Initiative (TPPF), explains how to calm your child’s fears about climate change and how to create optimism for the future.
Join America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy for a conversation with Governor Phil Bryant, the State of Mississippi (2012-2020) and executive advisory board member, International Leaders Summit and founding partner at Bryant Songy Snell Global Partners. The dicussion focuses on America's weakened energy security with cyber attacks crippling an American company's distribution of gas resulting in the cutting off a large portion of East Coast's fuel supply. While America's administration is negotiating with Iran, the state-sponsor of terrorism, Israel is under attack by Iran-supported terrorist organization Hamas, which fired more than 2000 rockets from Gaza Strip. Governor Phil Bryant served as chairman of the Southern States Energy Board (SSEB), an interstate compact composed of governors and state legislators from sixteen southern states and two territories, and chairman of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission. The conversation raises the urgency to address the challenges America faces in the energy arena, the potential impact on the nation's economy, security threats and principled solutions. Governor Phil Bryant served as Mississippi’s 64th governor from 2012 to 2020. Before becoming the state’s chief executive, the Honorable Phil Bryant was lieutenant governor, state auditor, and represented his legislative district in the Mississippi House of Representatives for five years. As governor, the Hon. Phil Bryant led Mississippi in implementing transformational public education reforms, promoting economic development, advancing strategic trade missions, and building a competitive business climate that attracted major employers like Amazon, Yokohama Tire Corporation and Continental Tire. According to published reports: “Under Gov. Bryant’s administration, 80,000 jobs were created and some $7 billion in private investment were brought into the state of Mississippi.” Relevant articles and video: Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) Mississippi unites with Israel at Jerusalem Leaders Summit (https://www.jns.org/mississippi-unites-with-israel-at-jerusalem-leaders-summit/) The Jerusalem Post: Love from Mississippi (https://www.jpost.com/jerusalem-report/love-from-mississippi-573674) Phil Bryant, governor of Mississippi, speaks about the U.S.-Israel relationship. We focus on the challenges America faces in the energy arena, the potential impact on the nation's economy, security threats and principled solutions. The winter storms in America's South, blackouts and the rising death toll have brought to the forefront a greater focus on America's energy policy, and the Biden Administration's push to implement the 'Green New Deal' - a commitment to 100% dependency on renewables (solar and wind) and eliminating coal, oil and natural gas as electricity sources by 2035. Americans should take a closer look at Germany's failed renewable energy experiment with160 billion euros spent thus far (US$193 billion) on wind turbine failures. By the year 2050, the costs would add up to 2 to 3.4 trillion euros (US$ 2.4 to 4.1 trillion).
