Conversation with Victor Davis Hanson | The Dying Citizen | America's Vanishing Middle Class | Erosion of the Rule of Law | National Security

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2022 31:00

Join America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy for a conversation with professor Victor Davis Hanson (https://www.hoover.org/profiles/victor-davis-hanson), best-selling author of The Dying Citizen: How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America (https://www.amazon.com/Dying-Citizen-Progressive-Globalization-Destroying/dp/154164753X). Professor Hanson is the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution; his focus is classics and military history. Hanson received a BA in classics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (1975), was a fellow at the American School of Classical Studies, Athens (1977–78), and received his PhD in classics from Stanford University (1980). The timely conversation brings to the forefront America's vanishing middle class and how government policies are impoverishing millions of citizens. Professor Victor Davis Hanson will provide his perspective on the influx of over 3 million illegal immigrants entering through the US southern border and its impact across the country. Key topics will also cover the significant erosion of the rule of law, and the weakening state of our national security. The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2022/06/16/united-states-border-immigration-arrests/) reports on the data compiled on illegal immigrants — "The agency is on pace to exceed 2 million detentions during fiscal 2022, which ends in September, after tallying a record 1.73 million in 2021." In an essay titled "A Quiet Destruction," Professor Hanson wrote (https://americancompass.org/essays/a-quiet-destruction/), "There is a common mentality evident in these pathologies and among those policymakers responsible for them. It is a strange new sense of justified entitlement among our credentialed elites in government and in private enterprise. As self-righteous moralists, they now assume that their deserved affluence, influence, and cultural superiority should exempt them from suffering firsthand the consequences of their own abstract theories and misbegotten policies that fall so heavily and so destructively upon distant and forgotten others." Professor Hanson provides a clarion warning by relaying evidences of the looming peasant state (https://www.deseret.com/2021/11/8/22766032/the-looming-peasant-state-stanford-hoover-institution-housing-crisis-middle-class): "The result is the emergence of a new American peasantry, of millions of Americans who own little or no property. The new majority has scant, if any, savings. Fifty-eight percent of Americans have less than $1,000 in the bank. A missed paycheck renders them destitute, completely unable to service sizable debt. Most of what they buy, from cars to electronic appurtenances, they charge on credit cards." The Dying Citizen: How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America (https://www.amazon.com/Dying-Citizen-Progressive-Globalization-Destroying/dp/154164753X) The New York Times bestselling author explains the decline and fall of the once cherished idea of American citizenship. Human history is full of the stories of peasants, subjects, and tribes. Yet the concept of the “citizen” is historically rare—and was among America's most valued ideals for over two centuries. But without shock treatment, warns historian Victor Davis Hanson, American citizenship as we have known it may soon vanish. In The Dying Citizen, Hanson outlines the historical forces that led to this crisis. The evisceration of the middle class over the last fifty years has made many Americans dependent on the federal government. Open borders have undermined the idea of allegiance to a particular place. Identity politics have eradicated our collective civic sense of self. And a top-heavy administrative state has endangered personal liberty, along with formal efforts to weaken the Constitution. As in the revolutionary years of 1848, 1917, and 1968, 2020 ripped away our complacency about the future. But in the aftermath, we as Americans can rebuild and recover what we have lost. The choice is ours. Articles and Essays by Professor Victor Davis Hanson: The Sovietization of American Life (https://www.independent.org/news/article.asp?id=14198) Behind all our disasters there looms an ideology, a creed that ignores cause and effect in the real world—without a shred of concern for the damage done to those outside the nomenklatura. A Quiet Destruction (https://americancompass.org/essays/a-quiet-destruction/) The problem is not that government is doing too much or too little, but rather that it is utterly failing in those key tasks that must rightfully be its focus. The Mercury News | Hanson: The American people are being forced to imagine the unimaginable (https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/05/13/hanson-the-american-people-imagine-the-unimaginable/) Americans are now entering uncharted, revolutionary territory. They may witness things over the next five months that once would have seemed unimaginable. Until the Ukrainian conflict, we had never witnessed a major land war inside Europe directly involving a nuclear power. In desperation, Russia's impaired and unhinged leader Vladimir Putin now talks trash about the likelihood of nuclear war. Conversation with Senator Jim DeMint | America's Economy | National Security Crisis at the U.S. Southern Border | Solutions to Advance US Energy Independence | Peace Through Strength

Join America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy for a conversation with Senator Jim DeMint, former US Senator and Chairman of Conservative Partnership Institute, a great American patriot and principled leader focusing on the vital issues impacting our nation and the world. The conversation with Senator DeMint will highlight the significance of affirming U.S. Constitutional principles and the urgency to advance pro-growth policies. On America's Roundtable Radio, the timely and relevant discussion will address the Biden administration's policies, America's serious economic problems including skyrocketing inflation now at 8.6% (fastest pace in 41 years), and the high energy costs adversely impacting American families and small businesses. The U.S. economy and the nation's security is dependent on energy; however, government policies and stringent regulations being imposed from Washington, DC, have undermined America's energy independence and placed the nation at great risk. Senator DeMint will present his views on the Federal Reserve's announcement on Wednesday of a 0.75-percentage-point raise of the federal-funds rate, the central bank's largest rate hike since 1994. Senator DeMint will also address the national security crisis and humanitarian crisis at the U.S. southern border. The discussion will place the spotlight on the goals of the Democratic Party's policies which reveal a troubling vision whereby the Department of Homeland Security is set to punish Border Patrol agents while refusing to uphold a rule of law based immigration system and shore up national security at the borders. Update: 50 Illegal immigrants on the terror list were apprehended at the border by Customs and Border Protection in 2022 thus far. This figure is more than the total number caught in the last five years combined. The dangerous activities of transnational organized crime networks at the border include human trafficking and smuggling of drugs such as fentanyl. The New York Times reported, "...deaths from drug overdoses rose again to record-breaking levels in 2021, nearing 108,000, the result of an ever-worsening fentanyl crisis, according to preliminary new data published on Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention." The program will cover Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the brutal warfare resulting in 1,000 casualties per day in the Donbas region, and the significance of affirming America's long-standing policy of peace through strength. Iran is dangerously close to completing its nuclear weapons program. Senator Jim DeMint has fought tirelessly for freedom, prosperity, and traditional American values against the Washington swamp for over two decades. Today, he leads and trains a new generation of conservative warriors as Chairman of the Conservative Partnership Institute. DeMint represented South Carolina in the U.S. House (1999-2005) and U.S. Senate (2005-2013). Known for policy innovation, he authored leading conservative reforms to health care, education, taxes, and entitlements. DeMint garnered national acclaim from conservatives for leading efforts to ban congressional earmarks, the source of billions of dollars of wasteful spending for decades which had led to corruption and widespread abuse. He also successfully led the fight to stop the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill in 2007. DeMint is also the Founder of the Senate Conservatives Fund, which played a major role in the election of many of the Senate's leading conservatives like Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Tom Cotton. Join America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy for an in-depth conversation with former U.S. Congressman David Brat, the brilliant economist, dean of the Business School at Liberty University, and executive advisory board member of International Leaders Summit — focusing on America's economy and the future of public policy in the United States. The conversation will also highlight a new Wall Street Journal-NORC Poll which shows that Americans are deeply pessimistic about the U.S. economy and view the nation as sharply divided over its most important values. According to The Wall Street Journal (https://www.wsj.com/articles/inflation-political-division-put-u-s-in-a-pessimistic-mood-poll-finds-11654507800), "Some 83% of respondents described the state of the economy as poor or not so good. More than one-third, or 35%, said they aren't satisfied at all with their financial situation. That was the highest level of dissatisfaction since NORC began asking the question every few years starting in 1972 as part of the General Social Survey." The discussion will also bring to the forefront the Biden administration's efforts to loosen up federal patent rules, thus opening the door for high-tech companies backed by the Chinese government to raid American inventions in the highly coveted 5G space. According to The Washington Examiner, "...three GOP senators are also warning that in watering down intellectual property protections, the administration could be jeopardizing national security at a time when China and other potential foes are outspending the United States on 21st-century technology by a mile.” This weekend's program will also review the concerns being raised by American citizens and legislators about the Biden Administration's foreign policy follies and the US entering a quagmire in Europe with $40 billion of taxpayer funds designated for Ukraine, while wealthy European nations still remain hesitant about paying their fair share for defense on the continent. Join America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Cheryl Chumley, author and online opinion editor of The Washington Times on her newly released book "Lockdown: The Socialist Plan to Take Away Your Freedom." The discussion highlights serious concerns of how Washington's bureaucratic structures are seeking new ways to impose draconian regulations and exert greater control through an unaccountable administrative state. On America's Roundtable, Chumley, Srdoc and Anand Samy will also focus on the recent gathering of the global power elite in Davos, Switzerland, and the agenda augmented by the World Economic Forum, the sponsoring corporations, and its leading figure Klaus Schwab to implement a “Great Reset” of capitalism. The conversation also highlights the 78th anniversary of D-Day and the significance of affirming the principled policy of peace through strength. Cheryl Chumley is a gifted writer and courageously explains what's at stake. Don't put off reading this book and regret that you failed to realize the threat we face." - Gov. Mike Huckabee, New York Times bestselling author and host of Huckabee "The Pandemic reminded us of how fragile our liberties are. Cheryl Chumley shows us how close we came to losing them for good and what we can do to secure them in time for the next challenge." - Cal Thomas, syndicated columnist and bestselling author "The Hippocratic Oath states: 'First, do no harm.' When a plague originated in a Chinese Communist Party lab in Wuhan began spreading like a prairie fire across America, President Trump faced a no-win situation - how best to stop it. In LOCKDOWN, Cheryl Chumley gets to the heart of the dilemma that POTUS warned us about on that March day - don't let the cure be worse than the disease. Cheryl Chumley is one of the most important voices in the Trump Movement and LOCKDOWN is a must-read for those 'Deplorables' who want to understand the real threat America faces." - Steve Bannon, host of War Room and former White House chief strategist for President Donald J. Trump On the new book Lockdown authored by Cheryl Chumley (https://www.amazon.com/LOCKDOWN-Socialist-Plan-Take-Freedom/dp/163006209X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=4K4MGJXWB1D4&keywords=LOCKDOWN%3A+The+Socialist+Plan+to+Take+Away+Your+Freedom&qid=1654188358&s=digital-text&sprefix=lockdown+the+socialist+plan+to+take+away+your+freedom%2Cdigital-text%2C125&sr=1-1-catcorr): _Lockdown is a terrifying story of not only the chaotic freefall of American freedoms during the opening stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the dangerous growth of government power that continues today. Lockdown is a warning that the extraordinary powers invoked by left-wing Democrats and others, justified by claims of public health and safety, have begun the unravelling of America's constitutional order and our most cherished freedoms. Using COVID-19 as a cover, Democrat leaders and their bureaucratic health advisers seized powers the Constitution never gave them, and ordered citizens to stay off streets and out of public parks, banned them from their workplaces, closed down their schools, and made church attendance a crimes — even as these same leaders and their left-leaning cronies blithely, arrogantly, and outrageously allowed mass protests, kept open abortion clinics and did as they pleased. Relying on her trademark aggressive reporting style, Cheryl K. Chumley explains how the radical left is using pandemic policies as a template for increasing controls over the lives of citizens as they build a one-party, socialist state in America. A sequel to her bestselling Socialists Don't Sleep, in Lockdown, Chumley exposes how hypocritical, elitist, and radical leftists are still using the coronavirus to score political points and steal individual rights – as the original pandemic served as dress rehearsal in the march toward the new fascism._ https://ileaderssummit.org/services/americas-roundtable-radio/ https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @ckchumley @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. The enlightening conversation focuses on the vital issues impacting our nation including the inexorable growth of an unaccountable administrative state, the significance of "natural rights" and the future of the courts, the First and Second Amendments and on recent developments in China and the Indo-Pacific region. From CSPAN: “What happened at the Court is tremendously bad,” remarked Justice Clarence Thomas about the recently-leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion that would strike down Roe v. Wade. Justice Thomas elaborated, saying that the leak does damage to the rule of law and institutions in general. “You can't have a civil society--a free society--without a stable legal system,” he added. His remarks came during an interview at the Old Parkland Conference in Dallas. He also discussed other issues including free speech at colleges and universities, the influence that his mentor Thomas Sowell had on him, his disagreement on always abiding by legal precedent, and his disapproval of protests that happen near public officials' homes. Source: https://www.c-span.org/video/?517582-1/justice-thomas-leak-supreme-court-opinion-damages-rule-law "Article I of the Constitution states that “all legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States.” That separates the law-making power of Congress from both the executive and judicial branches. By forbidding Congress to delegate its legislative authority elsewhere, this rule ensures that only elected legislators will make the laws that bind Americans or limit their liberties." —The Supreme Court's Chance to Restore Political Accountability (https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-supreme-court-restore-political-accountability-epa-west-virginia-carbon-dioxide-legislation-policy-11646002070), The Wall Street Journal commentary by Peter J. Should Supreme Court Justices Believe in Natural Rights? — Newsweek (https://www.aei.org/op-eds/should-supreme-court-justices-believe-in-natural-rights/) By John Yoo Brief excerpt: "In her answer, Judge Jackson accurately identifies the Declaration of Independence as one of the leading explications of natural rights in American history. But if she has no position on natural rights, as she wrote in response to Senator Cruz, then she has no position on the Declaration of Independence. Her answers did not come under the pressured circumstances of live hearings, but instead came as written answers to written questions after the end of her Judiciary Committee hearings. We should view them not as a mistake, but as her carefully considered views on the matter. Again, she puts herself in opposition to the Great Emancipator, who once said “I never had a feeling politically that did not spring from the sentiments embodied in the Declaration of Independence.” In an 1859 letter, Lincoln memorably wrote on the occasion of Thomas Jefferson's birthday: All honor to Jefferson—to the man who, in the concrete pressure of a struggle for national independence by a single people, had the coolness, forecast, and capacity to introduce into a merely revolutionary document, an abstract truth, applicable to all men and all times, and so to embalm it there, that to-day, and in all coming days, it shall be a rebuke and a stumbling-block to the very harbingers of re-appearing tyranny and oppression." Jackson Women's Health Organization overturning Roe v. Wade, America's national security crisis at the nation's southern border, the Republic's economic decline and the war in Europe. On March 19, 2018, Governor Phil Bryant signed the Gestational Age Act (H.B. 1510) into law. This bill was introduced by Mississippi Representative Becky Currie, a registered nurse. The bill received bipartisan support in both chambers of the legislature. Before becoming the state's chief executive, Phil Bryant was lieutenant governor, state auditor and represented his legislative district in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Governor Bryant began his career as a deputy sheriff in Hinds County and is a great proponent in strengthening America's constitutional principles — the rule of law, and standing firm for the significance of life, and liberty. Governor Bryant serves on the leadership board of International Leaders Summit and is a distinguished guest contributor of America's Roundtable. “The ability to obtain an abortion would not disappear across the U.S. It might in some states, but in some of those states there are already relatively few clinics that perform abortions. The likeliest result is a multiplicity of laws depending on how the debate and elections go. California might allow abortion until the moment of birth. Mississippi might ban it except in cases of rape or incest. This is how the American system is supposed to work, as the late Justice Antonin Scalia often wrote. After a series of elections, abortion law will sort itself out democratically. That had started to happen before the Supreme Court intervened in Roe, embittering the abortion debate and damaging the Court. As the Biden administration pushes for an Iran nuclear deal in Vienna, the discussion will also highlight the fact that an agreement with the state sponsor of terrorism will give Tehran access to some $100 billion in frozen funds. These dangerous developments including a nuclear-armed Iran raise the risk of a potential Middle East crisis impacting the region and beyond. Concerns are raised about the $40 billion Ukraine aid being rushed through Congress without greater oversight of spending. As America's top diplomat to Denmark, a NATO and European Union member state, Ambassador Sands was instrumental in blocking the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline running under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany. During Ambassador Sands tenure, Denmark increased its defense spending, while U.S. exports to the Kingdom of Denmark rose over 43%, resulting in the creation of additional jobs in America. Prior to her appointment as America's top diplomat to the European Union member state, Ambassador Sands had a diverse career in the entrepreneurial, investment, and philanthropic sectors, with a focus on real estate, community service and education. We have come a long way since the days of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his famous "I have a dream" speech and Dr. Ben Carson embodies that progress in every way imaginable. This book should be a must read for any American struggling to comprehend the left's anti-American racial agenda, and especially for those espousing it.”—Bob Unanue, CEO, Goya Foods "Dr. Carson's Created Equal brilliantly reveals the destructiveness of false divisions in society through his moving conversation on education, faith, race, and values in America."—Newt Gingrich, Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives https://ileaderssummit.org/services/americas-roundtable-radio/ https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @RealBenCarson @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. The discussion with Mayor Gabriel Groisman also focuses on the growing concerns of the Biden administration's insistence on closing a deal with Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism, thus handing over to the Iranian regime access to $90 billion dollars in foreign currency reserves and sanctions relief. The program also brings to the forefront urgency to expand the Abraham Accords, a principled policy initiative which is bringing together countries in the Middle East to promote trade and investments, and advancing pro-growth policies for the region. The discussion will also address the rise of anti-Semitism in America and around the world, as well as the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement targeting the sovereign state of Israel — which adversely impacts both Arabs and Jews. The Economist, April 2, 2022: What America can learn from Florida's boom "In fact, Florida has become emblematic of much of America and central to all of it. The state is on the rise, as our special report this week explains. Between 2010 and 2020 its population grew at double the national rate. Florida has overtaken New York to become America's third-most-populous state after California and Texas, with a dynamic and diverse demography, including fast-rising numbers of Hispanics. It is now the number-one destination for American and foreign movers." — The Economist Mayor Groisman will also share his insights on Passover, commemorating one of the high-holidays in the Jewish calendar commencing next week. He will invite us to learn more about the timeless principles from the historic events that led to the Israelites gaining their freedom from slavery in ancient Egypt, and their extraordinary journey to the Promised Land — today's Jewish State of Israel. Mayor Gabriel Groisman's Brief Bio Mayor Gabriel Groisman has been serving his community since November 2014, first being elected as a Councilman, and then in November 2016 was elected as the Mayor of Bal Harbour, Florida. He wrote and passed the nation's first municipal anti-BDS ordinance in December 2015 and was the first in the nation to codify a uniform definition of anti-Semitism in December 2017. Groisman's subsequent dealings with a local church who had previously boycotted and divested from Israel is the first documented success story of anti-BDS legislation. He is a sought after public speaker, regularly speaking to groups about fighting anti-semitism and the BDS movement, and related topics. Mayor Groisman has presented on two occasions at the United Nations in New York as a legal scholar on combating unjust and illegal commercial and academic boycotts of Israel, and has also presented at conferences held at the Italian Parliament in Rome, the Israeli Knesset and across the country. Still, Mayor Groisman prides himself in speaking to high school and college-aged students, who are the most directly impacted by the rise of anti-Semitism, always delivering a much needed sense of pride and strength. In his private life, Groisman is also a practicing attorney and government affairs consultant. He is a partner at the prestigious firm of LSN Partners where he focuses on government relations in correlation with the firm's state and national practice. At LSN Gabriel established an International Tech practice, working primarily with Israeli tech companies in various sectors, helping them navigate the world of government procurement and regulatory affairs in the United States. He also often advises on cases around the world related to protecting the Jewish community from discriminatory conduct by governments and private individuals alike. In 2017, Groisman was named as a member of Advisory Council for Israel and Middle East Issues by then-Congressman Ron DeSantis, Chairman of National Security Subcommittee. Estimates from Europe suggest that the numbers will rise to more than 5 million Ukrainians fleeing their homes in the coming weeks. The program features America's state legislatures and governors around the nation who are condemning Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Through a principled endeavor, both the Mississippi House of Representatives and Senate passed resolutions barring any business between state entities and Russia. Governor Bryant served two terms as Mississippi's 64th governor from 2012 to January 2020 and served as Mississippi's lieutenant governor, as state auditor, and as a legislator in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Phil Bryant is a founding member of Bryant Songy Snell Global Partners where he provides strategic advice and counsel and business development services to some of the world's largest industry leaders. He is a distinguished guest-host of America's Roundtable and serves on the International Leaders Summit's leadership board. While serving as Mississippi's chief executive officer, Governor Bryant largely centered his efforts on creating new economic opportunities, among other things. Under Governor Bryant's leadership Mississippi saw its lowest-ever unemployment rate, its lowest-ever high school dropout rate, its lowest-ever teen pregnancy rate, its highest-ever number of jobs, its highest-ever number of graduating physicians, its highest-ever K-12 reading and math improvement scores, and its highest-ever high school graduation rate. Governor Bryant's dedicated focus on economic development yielded more than $8 billion in private sector investment in Mississippi as well as the largest economic project in state history—a landmark agreement with Continental Tire to build a major manufacturing facility in central Mississippi and create more than 2,500 new jobs. Governor Bryant dovetailed public education reforms with a strong focus on workforce training programs and job creation. Debra retired after 20 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). She served as a Supervisory Special Agent on the International Corruption Unit at FBI Headquarters in Washington D.C.
