Jim sits down with Coach Ryan Hybl, the head coach of the University of Oklahoma Men's Golf team and recent inductee into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. Coach Hybl shares his journey through junior golf as a top ranked played, playing collegiately and starting coaching at the University of Georgia and eventually coming to Norman in 2009. We discuss how he rebuilt the Sooners' program from the ground up, eventually leading to a NCAA Championship in 2017. Coach Hybl discusses his philosophy on player development, recruiting overlooked talent, and fostering a team-first culture. He highlights stories of standout players like Max McGreevy, Quade Cummins, and Chris Gotterup, emphasizing how belief, hard work, and leadership have shaped the program's sustained excellence. In the Opening Tee Shot, Jim is joined by Justin Bardgett from the PGA Tour Pathways to discuss the recently announced changes to the PGA Tour University and Accelerated system, further strengthening the links between high-level college golf and playing professionally. In Angle of Attack with Andrew Lewis, Andrew discusses techniques, strategies and mindset for managing tough conditions (turf, wind and temperature) that are typical in many parts of the country during the winter months. Due to power outages and flooding from the hurricane, many of our lab friends are in need of help. The amazing Shawn Nowak of Nowak Dental Supplies (https://www.nowakdental.com/) has started a GO FUND ME to help those in need. Please consider giving what you can to help! https://www.gofundme.com/f/rebuilding-dental-labs-after-hurricane-helene?lang=enUS&utmcampaign=fpsharesheet&utmcontent=amp8c&utmmedium=customer&utm_source=facebook When a dental technician reached out to the podcast and recommended a dentist as a guest, we figured they worked together. But when we found that they don't and this dentist just does amazing restorations for patient's that can't usually afford them, we knew it would be a great episode. Dr. Ben Kellum went to dental school not really knowing what he was getting into. It was there that he learned to really like implants and took an opportunity to run a residency program doing implants and full arch for drug rehab patients. It was there that he learned that doing the lab work himself allowed him to keep the cost down and pass that along to the patients. Now, him and a partner own Transcend Dental Clinic (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087041301281) in Huntsville, Alabama doing pretty much the same thing. Thanks to the help of donations and vendors believing in what they are doing, they are able to offer complex and quality treatments to patients that usually can't afford complex and quality treatments. If you are in the market for purchasing a new milling machine or a furnace, Voices From the Bench invites you to connect with an Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) sales associates. They have several great deals and financing options now available for you to take advantage of. Dr. Jennifer Murray is an Associate Professor at Oklahoma State University, History, Stillwater, Oklahoma, 2021 - present. She is also a personal friend of mine. When we get together socially, we rarely talk about our lives in a format like we do on this show, so, this was an opportunity for me to get to know a friend better and to introduce her to you as a person, not just an historian behind a book or at a podium. Enjoy.   Dr. Jennifer M. Murray is American military historian, with a research and teaching specialization in the U.S. Civil War. She is a native of Pennsylvania and Maryland, and moved to Oklahoma in 2018. Research Interests: Her first book, On A Great Battlefield: The Making, Management, and Memory of Gettysburg National Military Park, 1933-2013 was published by the University of Tennessee Press in 2014. While Gettysburg is the most studied battle of the Civil War, On A Great Battlefield offers a pioneering interpretation that moves the discussion beyond the July 1863 battle to an exploration of the history of the battlefield landscape. Her research considers the nexus of preservation, interpretation, and memory at Gettysburg National Military Park from 1933, when the National Park Service acquired the battlefield, through the battle's sesquicentennial in 2013. A second edition of this book, with a new preface, was published in June 2023. Dr. Murray's current book project, tentatively titled, "Meade at War: The Military Life of George Gordon Meade" is a biography of Union general George Gordon Meade. Her research on Meade affords an opportunity to explore issues of high command within a fractured and politicized Army of the Potomac and addresses questions on the nature of civil-military relations, popular opinion, the media, and notions of a decisive battle.   After you get your bag of our first coffee brand, Little Ground Top ( www.addressinggettysburg.com/cafe ) head over to here and become a member to hear the rest of this interview and help us accomplish soooooo much more ( www.patreon.com/addressinggettysburg )

In episode 408 of the Construction Leadership Podcast, Dr. Kofi Asare and Bradley Hartman discuss the concept of digital twins and their potential impact on the construction industry. They explore various analogies and metaphors to explain what digital twins are and how they differ from other technologies like BIM. They also discuss the promise of digital twins in terms of predictive capabilities and cost savings, as well as the challenges and costs associated with implementing them. The conversation concludes with a discussion of the different levels of digital twins, from basic models to autonomous systems. Dr. Asare emphasizes the need for a systematic approach to implementing digital twins and cautions against using them without a clear use case. He also shares his experiences working with construction leaders and the challenges of driving digital transformation in the industry.   Takeaways Digital twins are virtual constructs that describe a physical entity in terms of its context, behavior, or makeup, with bi-directional coordination between the physical and virtual Digital twins have the potential to dramatically simplify and improve the operation and maintenance of the built environment. The adoption of digital twins is currently more prevalent in large-scale projects, but as costs decrease and technology advances, it is expected to become more widespread, even in residential construction. The promise of digital twins lies in their predictive capabilities and potential cost savings, particularly in terms of maintenance. The different levels of digital twins range from basic models to autonomous systems that can learn and act on behalf of their users. Implementing digital twins requires a systematic approach, focusing on people, processes, and technology. Driving digital transformation in the construction industry requires overcoming resistance to change and demonstrating the value of technology. Norman was a running back (1998-2000) and wide receiver (2001) for the Sooners, helping transform OU into one of the country's most successful programs under head coach Bob Stoops. OU went a combined 24-2 over his final two seasons (13-0 in 2000 and 11-2 in 2001). He served as a team captain his senior year. A Midland, Texas, native, Norman embarked on a coaching journey in 2007 when he became a junior high offensive coordinator at Community Christian School in Norman. Two years later he was hired as Community Christian's head high school football coach and led the Royals to a 23-0 record and back-to-back state championships in his two seasons. In 2009 he was named the NCSAA National Coach of the Year. Norman departed CCS to focus his time in the music ministry before returning to coaching in 2014 at NCAA Division II Southern Nazarene University. The BreakPoint Podcast
For OU Softball, Joy Doesn't Come from Winning (Another) National Title

The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 14, 2023 4:58

In sports news, the Denver Nuggets have won their first NBA Championship, in their 47th year in the league. That was this week. Last week, it was the Oklahoma Sooners women's softball team that dominated headlines, winning their third straight and seventh overall NCAA championship.   For those of us who don't typically follow this particular sport, the OU team was as well known for their celebrations and press conferences as for their dominant play. The word that comes to mind, partly because it was repeated over and over by those in the program and those watching, is joy. To be clear, for these Sooners, joy is not a consequence of winning. It's the other way around. When asked about their joy, during a press conference a few days before winning the national title, team captain Grace Lyons said this:   Well, the only way that you can have a joy that doesn't fade away is from the Lord. And any other type of joy is actually happiness that comes from circumstances and outcomes. I think Coach has said this before, but joy from the Lord is really the only thing that can keep you motivated, just in a good mindset, no matter the outcomes. Thankfully, we've had a lot of success this year. But if it was the other way around, joy from the Lord is the only thing that can keep you embracing those memories, moments, friendships, and all that.  Following Lyons, her teammate Jayda Coleman discussed her own journey of learning the proper order of winning and joy:  1,000% agree with Grace Lyons. I went through that my freshman year, I was so happy to win the [College World Series]. I've talked about this before, but I was just so happy that we won the College World Series, but I didn't feel joy . . . . I didn't know what to do the next day. I didn't know what to do for that following week. I didn't feel filled. And I had to find Christ in that. And I think that is what makes our team so strong is that we're not afraid to lose, because it's not the end of the world. If we do lose, yes, obviously, we worked our butts off to be here and we want to win. But it's not the end of the world because our life is in Christ. And that's all that matters.  It's not unusual at a press conference for an athlete or two to express thankfulness to God. What is unusual is for three in a row to do so, while also expressing how their faith in Christ has completely changed their perspective on sports and life. Sophomore Alyssa Brito then iced the press conference (that's a sports metaphor for an athlete who finishes out a game and secures the win), describing how the game is not life, only part of a life that's completely reoriented by focusing on Christ and not self:  I think a huge thing that we've really just latched on to is eyes up. And you guys see us doing this and pointing up, but we're really like fixing our eyes on Christ. And that's something we're, like they we're saying, you can't find a fulfillment in an outcome, whether it's good or bad. And I think that's why we're so steady in what we do and in our love for each other and our love for the game, because we know this game is giving us the opportunity to glorify God. And I just think once we figured that out, and that was our purpose, and everyone was all in with that, it's really changed so much for us. And I mean, I know myself, I've seen so much of a growth in myself . . . . once I turned to Jesus, and I realized how He had changed my outlook on life, not just softball, but understanding how much I have to live for. And that's living to exemplify the Kingdom. And I think that brings so much freedom. And I'm sure everyone's story is similar, but we all have those great testimonies that have really, like, shown how awesome it is to play for something bigger.  To be clear, this is a talented team, but there is also a culture in place at OU that just looks different. In another press conference, Coach Patty Gasso attributed their success to knowing “they are defined not by softball . . . . . They never play tight, they never play afraid . . . . because . . . . they've really found their freedom … through their faith.”  In a “Dear Softball” letter, senior captain Grace Lyons echoed her coach when she said her perspective changed “when I realized you were just something I did, not who I was.”   The expectation is to idolize you. And the promise is that true joy comes from reaching a goal that you have put all of your effort into. Yes, we as Christians are expected to work hard at all that we do for Christ. But the real victory has already been won on the cross: Jesus dying for my sin and saving me. Because of this, I have an eternal hope that allows me to play your game free with fullness of joy that comes only from the Lord. With this mindset, I have played the most joyful softball the last five years.  And that joy has pointed millions to the One who is the Giver of all good gifts. Congrats Grace and OU softball, and thank you for sharing this gift with us.  For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

She finished her collegiate career with a 513-294 (.636) overall record and a 253-167 (.601) mark in Big 12 play. Nine of her squads that qualified for the NCAA Tournament advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Three of them barreled their way to the Final Four (2002, 2009, 2010), with the 2001-02 Sooners advancing to the national championship game. All told, her teams registered 31 NCAA Tournament wins, good for 15th most among Division I women's basketball coaches. Her three Final Four appearances are tied for eighth most in history. Her new book about her journey in sports and life is called Rooted to Rise. a collection of essays about people—some have achieved extraordinary worldly success, and some have led what society might label “ordinary lives.”  But the stories are far less about what her people have done and far more about who they are, or were, or always will be through the impact they had on those around them. As Coale writes: "The people I write about in Rooted to Rise are my people.  But everybody has some.  I hope you recognize and remember yours through the stories of mine." Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is divided into pre-capillary and post-capillary profiles, where pre-capillary PH is hemodynamically characterized by a mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) > 20 mmHg, pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) ≤ 15 mmHg and a pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) ≥ 3 Woods Units (WU), and post-capillary PH is defined as mPAP > 20 mmHg, PAWP ≥ 15 mmHg, and PVR can be either < 3 WU (isolated post-capillary PH) or ≥ 3 WU (combined pre- and post-capillary PH). Welcome to Chapter 34! I had the joy of talking with Andrew Berzanskis, Editorial Director for the University of Oklahoma Press. Andrew has worked in publishing for two decades, during which his work involved acquiring books for the University of Washington Press, West Virginia University Press, and the University of Georgia Press. He got his start in university press publishing through an editorial fellowship at the University of Texas Press. In our conversation, you'll learn about the mission of OU Press and some of the similarities and differences between university presses and the larger commercial publishers. We also talk about the kinds of books featured by OU Press and Andrew walks through the publication process from acquisition to production, including some incredible advice for authors interested in working with these presses.Connect with Andrew and OU Press: Website | Andrew on Twitter | OU Press on TwitterDoing something a little different with the review this month. "I'm not going to fail, I'm not a failure." Today we explore the journey of second year head coach of the Sooners, Tim Langford. From his days growing up in Virginia under the mentorship of Coach Rufus Knight, Tim has always blazed a trail not many have tried before. You'll hear the amazing story of how a near death car crash helped show him the light of coaching track and field, what it was like to coach collegiate track full time as a 22 year old, and the successes along the way at smaller schools. We get into a great conversation on talent identification as well as how to manage a collegiate track program on less than half the maximum allowable limit for scholarships.
