On this 24th episode, we begin our deep dive of the United States Men’s National Team, and we begin with a focus on the goalkeepers. Which goalkeepers are at the top of the depth chart? Which ones are fighting to be in the mix or should be in the mix? Which ones are on the outside looking in. Here is the list of goalkeepers that are discussed: Zack Steffen (25 years old, Manchester City) Sean Johnson (31, New York City FC) Bill Hamid (30, D.C. United) JT Marcinkowski (23, San Jose Earthquakes) Matt Turner (26, New England Revolution) Brad Guzan (36, Atlanta United) Jonathan Klinsmann (23, LA Galaxy) Ethan Horvath (25, Club Brugge) Stefan Frei (34, Seattle Sounders) Jesse Gonzalez (25, formerly FC Dallas) Tim Melia (34, Sporting Kansas City) David Bingham (30, LA Galaxy) David Ochoa (19, Real Monarchs/Real Salt Lake) Brady Scott (21, Nashville SC) Alex Bono (26, Toronto FC) Please note that I mention 15 goalkeepers, but there are only 14 on this list. Originally, I discussed former FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez being at the very bottom of this list because of his domestic violence charge and sexual harassment accusations against him. Frankly, I didn't feel comfortable even having him on any list because he doesn't deserve to be on the national team, straight up. So, I removed that portion of the discussion, and we're left with 14 guys who deserve at least to be on this depth chart. Who do you think belongs in that first tier of the depth chart? Which ones do you want called in for competitions like World Cup qualifying, the Gold Cup, Nations League, or the Olympics should we qualify? Continue the discussion and the debate in the comments below. The next episode will focus on the defenders, so if you want to make sure you don’t miss out on it, make sure to subscribe and tell your friends so you’re ready to discuss the rest of the USMNT player pool! Galaxy? ¿Caerá algún fichaje importante este verano?
Andrew is back, and the guys waste no time putting him in his place. First, though, David and Matt help break down Toronto FC's dramatic Canadian Championship triumph against archrivals Montreal, those Wesley Sneijder-to-LAFC rumors, a changing Cali Clasico and early winners and losers from the Dax McCarty trade. There's a packed weekend of MLS action in store, but the US national team managed to jam a friendly in as well. What's Bruce Arena looking for against Ghana? What partnerships are being tested? Is Matt Hedges the key to the backline? Will it be Dom Dwyer or Juan Agudelo up top? In the second segment, it's all Lamar Hunt US Open Cup following a typically wild night of action. Poku (!!!) got the game-winner vs. Atlanta, but it was Mitch Hildebrandt who became a folk hero after saving three penalties to help FC Cincinnati knock off the Chicago Fire from the spot. He joins the guys to explain his strategy, tell stories from his not-so-wild night, explain what makes Cincinnati such a strong soccer market and look ahead to the next round (and perhaps even more glory). The mailbag starts with some news: Jesse Gonzalez's one-time switch to the US is done and dusted. So what's that mean for the national team and the FC Dallas goalkeeper? Plus, San Jose's new direction, a hot (but incorrect) take in Toronto and an "I told you so" from a long-time listener in Chicago. Want to be a part of the show? Call the Hot-Take Hotline at 401-206-0MLS to leave a voicemail (keep it short and sweet and avoid colorful language) that could appear on ExtraTime Radio!
Despite there being no D.C. United game this past weekend, we have plenty to talk about. We bring on Sebastian Salazar, formerly of Comcast SportsNet and now of ESPN and ESPN FC, to talk about the USA's 1-1 draw with Mexico. We talk about the goals of Michael Bradely and Carlos Vela, the difference between the 5-4-1s of Jurgen Klinsmann and Bruce Arena, and Bruce's use of Christian Pulisic. We discuss the fact that the USA and Mexico have reasserted their dominance after having floundered in this cycle and the previous cycle, respectively. We end by talk about future qualification runs as the World Cup expands, and the choice made by Jesse Gonzalez to represent the USA. In the second segment we get back to D.C. United and talk about their two games coming up this week. We start with the US Open Cup and their matchup tonight against Christos FC. Christos are the last amateur team left in the Open Cup, and Ben Olsen will likely be running out a ton of reserves in this game. We then get into United's weekend game against Toronto FC, and try and figure out if United has a chance against the defending Eastern Conference champs. Give it a listen! Thank you again to everyone who has supported us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/filibuster)! Last week, we released our first bit of bonus content, which was the stories of how each of us got into soccer and United. Ben (@BS3Sports) and Preston (@pdub116) discuss FC Dallas' 0-0 draw to Houston Dynamo, preview the upcoming match vs Real Salt Lake, Jesse Gonzalez's new contract and much more
WBEN's Brian Mazurowski spoke with Jesse Gonzalez, one of a few people in Cleveland openly carrying a firearm.
What started at 12 is down to four, and Matt and Andrew break down all the Conference Semifinal second leg action as the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs roll on. FC Dallas got revenge for last year’s postseason exit, dropping Seattle in penalty kicks with the help of 20-year-old goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez. Portland stand in their way after shrugging off listless Vancouver, while the other side of the bracket pits the Red Bulls and Columbus Crew SC. No big-money stars? No problem. Is that a trend? New York City FC have their fair share of stars in Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo and David Villa. They have a new head coach with similar credentials as a player in Patrick Vieira. Is he the right man for the job? Don’t write him off just yet. Plus, is Jurgen Klinsmann’s 23-man roster, sans Clint Dempsey, the right group to lead the United States national team into qualifying? Perhaps, at least it’s easy to get excited about Darlington Nagbe and Matt Miazga. In the mailbag, a fan writes in with his Best XI. Do the guys agree? Yes and no.
It could be some week for Vancouver Whitecaps. Saturday saw the team bolster their MLS playoff hopes with a huge win over Dallas and they'll follow that up on Wednesday with the Canadian Championship Final second leg at home to Montreal Impact. We look back at the 'Caps 1-0 win over Dallas. A win that temporarily saw them move back into first place in the Supporters' Shield race. There's the highs, the lows and we hear from both head coaches after the match, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and an exclusive chat with Dallas' Oscar Pareja. Still in the Dallas locker room, we have one on one chats with defender Matt Hedges and debutant goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez, and the Texans' Canadian Rookie of the Year, Tesho Akindele, talks about the game, his own personal season, his decision to pledge his international future to Canada and the recent Gold Cup. It was the Whitecaps' 10th clean sheet of the season and one of the key men behind that stat is centre back Kendall Waston. We hear from the big man about the win, the 'Caps defence and look ahead to Wednesday's Voyageurs Cup final with Montreal and the possibility of Waston playing against Didier Drogba. And there's still time to preview Wednesday's big Cup Final. Will the Whitecaps finally break the curse? We'll soon find out. Have a listen!
