Mexico vs South Africa Match Reaction & AnalysisMexico got the victory, but I'm not convinced by the performance. In this reaction, I break down why I believe El Tri became too conservative after taking control of the match. While the result went Mexico's way, I felt the team sat back unnecessarily, allowed South Africa back into the game, and created problems that could have been avoided.I'll discuss:⚽ What Mexico did well⚽ Why the team became too passive⚽ Moments where South Africa gained momentum⚽ Key performers for Mexico⚽ Whether this approach can work against stronger opponentsA win is a win, but performances matter too—especially with bigger challenges ahead.Do you agree with my assessment, or am I being too harsh on Mexico after a victory?

It's a CONCACAF World Cup for the first time in 32 years, so it's only right that we take a look at the 3 host nations, as well as their confederation-mates from Central America and the Caribbean. Who has the strongest squad? Who's got the best shot to go deep? Who's most likely to crash and burn? We begin with the always-drama-filled United States and Mexico, where we compare and contrast strengths and weaknesses and debate their respective ceilings. Does the U.S. have a midfield problem? Who's scoring the goals for El Tri? How far can Mexico's Azteca advantage take them? Then we look into Jesse Marsch's unique Canada's squad, who win with continuity and high work-rate, but have been plagued by the injury bug. Can Alphonso Davies return in time to inspire a knockouts run? We also take a look at Panama's veteran group who play a classic CONCACAF style and appreciate the incredible stories of Haiti and Curaçao, who overcame great odds to be at the tournament. Cheers! Note: This was originally scheduled as the 7th preview, but was moved up a day. The final preview episode will be up tomorrow! Chapters: 3:55 - USA 18:15 - Mexico 25:05 - Canada 31:35 - Panama 36:05 - Haiti 38:55 - Curaçao

Miguel is joined by Alexander Aviña — associate professor of Latin American and Mexican history at Arizona State University and author of Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside — for a deep conversation where fútbol and imperialism collide. First, Alexander breaks down Mexico's World Cup-hosting history, linking the 1970 tournament to the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre and 1986 to the 1985 Mexico City earthquake and public jeering of PRI presidents, while noting protests during 1986 and Sócrates' solidarity gestures as Maradona worked his magic on the pitch. They compare those political tensions to the upcoming 2026 tournament. Alexander and Miguel also break down the younger, Liga MX and Euro club-heavy Selección Nacional Mexicana roster, what home-field advantage at Azteca could mean, and why FIFA's hyper capitalist grip on this tournament — from displaced vendors and street workers in Mexico City to $30,000 World Cup final tickets in the US — has both Miguel and Alexander feeling less excited about this World Cup than any before.Miguel and Alexander also dig into the CNN and New York Times reporting on CIA-linked assassination operations targeting cartel figures on Northern Mexican soil, asking whether the line between intelligence sharing and outright foreign intervention has already been crossed. They also break down Mexico's Ministry of Public Education, reversing its plan to end the school year early for the World Cup, the US State Department's announced review of all 53 Mexican consulates and the far-right conspiracy theory behind it, and the broader Trump administration push to install a right-wing political order across Latin America — from Venezuela to Cuba to Mexico.Lastly, Miguel and Alexander discuss the contradictions of being a politically conscious Fútbol fan: rooting hard for El Tri while critiquing the mega-event capitalist FIFA machine hosted in the imperial core.
