Manchester United have won four games in a row! Scott McTominay wins another game for Erik ten Hag's side, who remain five points behind Aston Villa and six behind Spurs but have found some momentum. Rasmus Hojlund's unstoppable scoring march continues to help United achieve a rare away victory at a top-eight side, a first since 2021. With that damning statistic in mind, the key question to ask today - beyond how satisfying was that - is whether this 2-1 victory at Villa Park is a sign of something sustainable or a one-off? Is this harking back to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sides in many ways? Or should we look over some poor moments in an intense 90-minute match given the end result was so good and so valuable? All of that, plus much, much more is answered by hosts Harry Robinson and Jack Tait on the latest episode of the Manchester United Weekly Podcast where we'll also be playing Guess the Player, giving you an extensive Academy Briefing and previewing Sunday's away match at Luton Town. We also talk Old Trafford. Wembley of the North? That's what they're saying. Rebuild, renovate, demolish, move - what options do we favour? Our Patrons get a bonus 15-20 minute Q&A in which we answer questions like ‘Is McTominay the new Smalling?', ‘why hasn't Ten Hag implemented a successful plan?' ‘if Ten Hag could give out a managers' player of the year award who would he give it to, and why is it Scott McTominay' ‘are there opposition players you've begrudgingly enjoyed watching from rivals?' ‘what are De Gea and Phil Jones doing?' ‘which striker should United sign next?' And that's not even it - there's much more! If you want to listen to that bonus section every week and get ad-free episodes and help support our work as we near our 10th series, you can do so by going to patreon.com/UnitedWeeklyPodcast. ANDRE ONANA NOT CHELSEA BOUND? TOTTENHAM SIGN DEJAN KULUSEVSKI PERMANENTLY, DE GEA FUTURE UNCERTAIN by Sarcasm City TV
GW38 started with a raft of lineup leaks—some more trustworthy than others—that set the tone for a wild final match-day of the 2022–23 fantasy season. If the decision point was a Salah versus Kane captaincy, we know how that went. But there were countless other ways to cut this gameweek; from a De Gea penalty save or an Alvarez blank to a Gabriel Jesus punt. In this episode, the Cheaters reflect on their own squads and results and begin the long process of learning from everything this season has thrown at us. A familiar face joins hosts Helen Evans, Sam Homewood and David May on the latest UTD Podcast as Eric Steele lifts the lid on his time at the club. The Reds' former goalkeeping coach has some fascinating tales to tell about working under Sir Alex Ferguson and helping the team lift the Premier League title in 2012/13. After starting out at the Wallsend Boys' Club, like our previous guest Steve Bruce, the Geordie retired from his playing career in 1988 but was determined to start a new chapter in coaching. There was a back-up option, buying a pub, but he ended up working with some of the best in the game, including Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and, of course, David De Gea. Piecing together his journey in the game, Eric reveals how he felt compelled to re-enact one of the most famous saves of all time, Gordon Banks's jaw-dropping dive to keep out Pele's header, at the same stadium in Guadalajara, while on tour. There is great insight into what his job entails on a day-to-day basis, his working relationship with Sir Alex and the Reds he felt were the best and worst trainers. In addition to his thoughts on van der Sar and De Gea, Eric recalls how Ben Foster became the penalty shootout hero in the 2009 League Cup final win over Tottenham, with the help of an iPad. Steele reveals the fall-out from Ferguson's retirement and how much a new project means to him, as he continues to appreciate how lucky he is to work in the sport. The best place to catch up on the back-catalogue of our interviews is over on the Manchester United App, where you can listen to - and watch - all of our episodes in full, for free. Ian Irving, Andy Mitten, and Laurie Whitwell have got the hump with Manchester United's away form. David De Gea's rick at the London Stadium made the headlines but the performance was alarmingly familiar. What we'd give for a run of away form like the one seen under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; we wonder if he is remembered unfairly on the tenth anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
