Today, we are thrilled to have a special guest on the show, Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt extraordinaire, Emil Fischer, hailing from Cleveland, OH, and representing Strong Style MMA. Emil is a practitioner who often finds himself at the crossroads of professionalism and an active Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle. In my opinion, he is also one of the most misunderstood figures in the community. Some of my favorite aspects of Emil are that he is intelligent, effective, and irreverent, I think it is this mixture that makes those with overdeveloped egos uncomfortable. Emil's walkouts in Jiu-Jitsu competitions are, without a doubt, the stuff of legend—don't take my word for it, go and search for yourself. In this episode, we delve into Emil's early days, exploring why he initially faced challenges at white belt like being asked to leave a couple of academies. We'll unravel the confusion surrounding Emil's academy affiliation, touch on his contributions to Jiu-Jitsu Times, explore his unique Burt Reynolds guard instructional, and connect the dots between him and notable figures like Meerkatsu, Stipe Miocic, Dante Leon, and much more. It's a fascinating discussion, and I empathized with and genuinely liked Emil. Remember to show your support by liking, sharing, and subscribing. The boys talk about things you should do before deciding to give up BJJ for good. A couple years ago Jiu Jitsu Times wrote an article about trying these things first before quitting altogether. Surprisingly, we didn’t hate it. Most of us at some point for some reason or another, have thought about quitting. We’ve been struggling with those ideas recently as well. That’s why we thought doing a show on this might be pertinent. The fact is, there are many reasons to quite jiujitsu. Between time, money, injuries, and boredom, you can always find a reason to hit the door running. But....when you stop to consider it, there are more reasons to stay. So before you make the decision to stop your membership, go through the list of things in the article first. You’ll be happy you did.

It’s been awhile since we did a podcast based on kids even tho the show is literally about being a dad in this sport....but all the points apply to adults as well, so everyone is covered. We may have talked about how the show “Cobra Kai” relates to it as well....

Avery is a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training out of Adelaide, Australia, and is currently an author for the Jiu Jitsu Times. In this episode we discuss a lot of different topics, from starting in jiu jitsu, barriers women experience, inclusion within the sport, and some of Averi’s past. A quick note, the audio is still a bit all over the place due to our mic’s sound levels being out of sync. So I recommend listening on a lower volume to start and wait for Averi to speak before adjusting, especially if you’re using headphones or earphones, and increase as necessary. Again, if there’s someone you think I should reach out to, or if there’s any issues you’re experiencing with this revised format, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me. The boys talk about why you should force yourself into going to the gym even on the days when that’s literally the last thing you want to do. We read another Jiu Jitsu Times article (of course), about some reasons why this is the case and how you can talk yourself into going when you don’t wanna. We understand that this is a weird time when you might not actually be able to go even if you do want to. The problem that we found at least, is that the longer you’re not able to train, the more you fill that time with other stuff. Even if it’s relaxing, it does in fact feel good to do nothing sometimes. What we’re ultimately getting at tho, is that this Jiu Jitsu lifestyle and what you’ll ultimately gain from it will far exceed what you’re gonna get if you quit. Sometimes it’s just easier to go when you don’t feel like it rather than start back up after you quit. Besides, some of the best training people get is on the days they don’t want to go. Over time that will pay dividends in your acquired skill level. Trust us. It’s worth it.

The boys read an article from Jiu Jitsu Times where a black belt looks back at all the mistakes he made as a white belt and what he could’ve done differently to make his progress even faster. We look back and remember how we felt when we were noobs given the same advice. It’s always easy to look at beginners and get frustrated at them, when in reality we were the same or probably worse. Paulie wonders if he’d have a shorter learning curve if he’d had enough time between breaks to implement the same advice given to him that the article suggests. After they beat the crap out of the article and give some of their shortsighted yet fatherly advice they talk a bit about Jamahal’s UFC win over the weekend as well as what it’s like training with him. Of course we hope everyone gets back to training both soon and safely. Much love to everyone!

The boys talk about what you might possibly expect when you come back from a long lay-off from Jiu Jitsu. This was based off a Jiu Jitsu Times article that they of course crapped all over, but nonetheless agreed with some parts. Since Paulie came back many times from many lay-offs, for many reasons...he has some insight on what it’s like to get back on the mat. Kip is just about to come back after a long lay-off and shares his anxieties and apprehension about getting back to it. If you’re coming back after an injury, just make sure you really ease into it so as not to re-injure yourself. Make sure you take enough time off to heal as well. Nothing screws up more people than coming back too soon and going too hard. If for any other reason your coming back after a while off the mats...still take it easy so you don’t get injured and force yourself to take even more time off. You won’t be able to start right back up where you left off. It won’t take long to get your groove back so long as you don’t do anything stupid. So be mindful of how hard and how much you go for the first couple of months and you should be just fine.

This week the boys find an article from Jiu Jitsu Times and decided that while they hated it, it brought up a good point. As they do, they crap on the article while coming up with equally dumb ideas all on their own...Basically, this show is a thing because someone made an article about an incident on a reddit thread, and Kroyler was too busy to give them the pro tip you deserved...It goes like this:Boyfriend and girlfriend play wrestle. Girlfriend has five years of BJJ and boyfriend has zero. Girlfriend taps boyfriend out. Boyfriend feels emasculated and acts like an idiot. The article, unfortunately in our eyes, says that the girl should have had a conversation about consent before they play wrestled and that would’ve solved this problem. We thought that was dumb...However, in the larger picture, we as BJJ practitioners, should maybe be less enthusiastic about showing off all our newfound skills on the people in our lives that maybe don’t care as much as we do the effectiveness of a rear naked choke. We understand that in a short amount of time you feel like you ha e this new superpower. We understand that you want to share the gospel of Jiu Jitsu. We even understand if you’re a bit of a sadistic f*ck and want to choke as many people as possible, you know, for the practice. But, if you want to win friends and influence people, maybe don’t do that unless they show genuine interest in this hobby of yours.

We covered in an earlier episode about the benefits of rolling with white belts. That was mostly about being able to practice new moves that you aren’t proficient in yet during a live roll and still having some success. So, basically using them for your own gain....In this episode we take a different approach based on a Jiu Jitsu Times article that Paul ran across. While some of the principles overlap a bit, the idea is quite different. The main overarching takeaway we got from this article is that brand new white belts don’t know any Jiu Jitsu so they are just fighting you with whatever comes to mind. This is important because in a real life altercation that’s exactly what you’re going to run across. Their point was simple.... just because they aren’t using Jiu Jitsu, doesn’t mean that they aren’t tough, strong, and athletic. Even non BJJ fighting can be somewhat effective. We made the point that your Jiu Jitsu should be able to negate someone such as this. That’s the whole point of learning this martial art, to be able to defend yourself against a bigger, stronger opponent. What better way of testing yourself than against a big and strong person who is most likely going to fight back like any other layman?Once a white belt is a few months in they start to become more predictable and you won’t get the same chance to test yourself like you do on the new person. So take advantage while you can...We also talked about other stuff and things that are mildly Jiu Jitsu related...

Paul read a Jiu Jitsu Times article titled “rolling hard while keeping it playful” last week and thought it had some good insight that may help people. The boys talk about different people having different ideas of what a fun roll is. Some feel the need to test themselves and go hard every time and some like to experience the nuances of each technique in every roll. Even we have different ideas of what a fun roll is. We also dispel the myth of “iron sharpens iron” and why that makes little to no sense. Basically you are just smashing into each other and getting dull and dented...but I digress. There were a few tips in the article that we agreed with and a few we didn’t. Funny thing is we disagreed on what those were....To wrap it up, we got into an email from a listener who is struggling with just getting smashed. We took some ideas from the article as well as what we are currently doing in our own academy to possibly help him out. Seeing as how, unless you are the top dog in your academy, these principles may help you experience a more fun and dynamic roll and experience even more of what Jiu Jitsu has to offer.

In this episode the boys answered a listener question about being a beginner and what to do if someone is coaching you (who is also a beginner) that seems contrary to what your actual coach is showing in the class. This got a bit more into the weeds than we had intended but ultimately we answered the question quite well...who knows. Paul read an article about a female police Officer who got into the fight of her life while on the job. She credited her survival to BJJ and Muay Tai training that she does on her own time. She wrote a post about it on her own social media advocating that all officers of the law should take self defense training into their own hands. The boys noted that while she is “only” a three stripe white belt, it was enough to effectively save her life. They go on to advocate along with her the importance of having some form of training in your life if ever this type of situation comes up. It’s especially important if your job consists on running towards danger. When we’re done beating that dead horse, we move onto another semi-correlating article about grappling with your daughters. There was a Jiu Jitsu Times article touting the benefits of rolling with your daughters and we tied it into the importance of teaching your children how to protect themselves just as the officer had to do. This episode was a bit darker than our usual ones, but we feel it’s necessary to get a bit real on occasion because it is important. First and foremost BJJ is a form of self defense. We think that while most of us never expect to use it or even really think about, we should at least be prepared for violence should it ever happen to ourselves or loved ones. We talk about funny shit just to wrap up the show...

It’s a legit reason. They also give shit to all the people that tell us they are going to start a podcast and don’t while simultaneously getting their homies name wrong who actually followed through. Go Steve!!! The boys talk about the huge scary looking new dude and how they’re too scared to roll with him. We’ve heard people say that you’re never going to progress in Jiu Jitsu if you only go once or twice a week. It’s actually quite common to hear actually. Paul found an article from Jiu Jitsu Times that discusses this very subject so they dive right into it. After the boys rip apart the article they delve into what you can do to maximize your training whether you train once per week or seven days per week.

Paul talks a bit about the Kroyler seminar this past weekend. He lamented that he should’ve taken notes. He had a great speech about why white belts suck so much because they try and overcome lack of technique with physicality and shit form and learn bad habits. Paul asked Kroyler for a Kroyler’s Corner concerning white belts and to give them a little love, as we just had an episode for blue belts. Turns out he thought I meant tough love... Paul reads his essay in his usual butchering way as he stops multiple times to give Kroyler shit and expound on his ideas. The boys disagree about Brandon’s (new guy at the gym) porn stash. Sport BJJ for self defense, Spider Guard, and Christian Beliefs Chapter 2 (well, part of chapter 2 anyways) are all discussed on today's podcast. Flow Grappling says that Rickson Gracie's view on sport BJJ being ineffective in self-defense is outdated. Do you agree? I give my thoughts. (for more info on the Olympic Judoka who was mugged after medaling, click here). Spider guard is a position that few people work on. Jiu Jitsu Times makes the case that you should work on not just Spider Guard, but many other uncommon positions and why that will expand your game overall. I agree and give my thoughts and experience. What positions do you need work on? Email us at grapplingwiththeology@gmail.com. I dive into Chapter 2 of "Christian Beliefs" but I don't quite finish it. Bullshit martial arts videos are fun and we talk about our appreciation of them. The boys segway their bullshido talk into questioning why finger locks aren’t a thing as long as wrist locks are. Kroyler’s Corner happens a bit earlier in this episode where of course we butcher it.  He talks about why you should take notes as well as not chase the belt. Kip and Paul suck at note taking. The boys tangent about watching YouTube videos rather than taking notes. There are both good and bad aspects to this and we just wish we could stay on the good side of that. The crux of our conversation today was about woman’s self defense seminars and if they are a good thing or are they giving a false sense of security. The boys talk about two separate articles/videos on Jiu-Jitsu Times about an opinion that a single self defense class is doing more harm than good and why we disagree. The other video is about a female MMA fighter and an internet troll finding out for themselves if a trained woman can beat an untrained but athletic male. Paul brings up The Dog Brothers Martial Arts and just how crazy those dudes are. Also, if you’re a woman (or anybody for that matter) carry a knife. Paul sneezed really loudly...
