In an era where government tech projects often end in billion-dollar failures and privacy nightmares, there's a tiny Baltic nation that's quietly revolutionized what's possible. Estonia—a country of just 1.3 million people—has built what might be the world's most efficient digital government. Every public service is online. Digital signatures save 2% of GDP annually. And in a twist that should intrigue American conservatives, they've done it with smaller government, not bigger. How did a former Soviet republic become a model of lean digital governance? What's their secret for avoiding the "big-bang IT project" disasters that plague Washington? And most importantly—can America's divided political system learn anything from Estonia's success?Joining for this episode are two experts who've studied Estonia's digital miracle up close. Dr. Keegan McBride is senior policy advisor in emerging technology and geopolitics at the Tony Blair Institute. He's also a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Foundation for American Innovation. Joel Burke is the author of Rebooting a Nation: the Incredible Rise of Estonia, E-Government, and the Startup Revolution, and Senior Public Policy Analyst at Mozilla.
We dive into Estonia's e-governance journey with insights from Joel Burke, AI policy expert and author of Rebooting A Nation. Joel shares his experience of Estonia's rise as a global leader in digital governance, highlighting the cultural mindset and political courage that helped shape the nation's innovative e-government systems. We also explore how AI is shaping the future of public services with experts Liina Kamm and Karin Rajamäe-Soosaar, who discuss the importance of responsible AI deployment, its impact on local governments, and the role of digitalisation in improving everyday services. Tune in to discover the lessons Estonia's digital transformation holds for the world.
How has Estonia, a country of just 1.5 million people, blessed with few natural resources, developed a flourishing defense technology sector? For this NATO and EU member, and vibrant democracy, necessity is the mother of invention. Estonia, where the prime minister is often just an email away, has often been praised for its pioneering efforts in digital “E-government.” Less well-known may be the large bets Estonia's public and commercial sectors have placed on developing a robust innovation ecosystem specializing in AI and cyber. Joel Burke, a researcher focused on AI and technology policy, joins us to discuss Estonia's collaborative approach to integrating government and private resources, personnel, and technologies to support national defense. Joel is a beautiful ballet dancer that has trained extensively with The Australian Ballet School and Queensland Ballet Academy. In fact, we both share a deep love and respect for Paul Boyd who listeners of the pod are well acquainted with having both been taught by him for many years. During our conversation we dive into Joel's experience as a Prix de Lausanne finalist and how he has decided to move away from the traditional route of becoming a professional ballet dancer to explore feature film opportunities, event management and anything else that tickles his fancy when it comes to shaking up this industry. Can you see why I'm a big fan of Joel? Young and full of spirit with just the right amount of rebel in him that shows respect to the dance industry whilst simultaneously questioning past practices and look at reinventing the wheel. Because of this I'm officially a Joel fan and I think you will be too after listening to this conversation. Joel's most recent endeavour is to bring the most talented ballet dancers from across the world together to showcase their incredible ability over a series of two intimate evenings at South Bank's Piazza Auditorium, which is an incredible outdoor stage that's fully undercover. Perfect for covid times! Shortened to BIG, the Ballet International Gala is the perfect mix of international and local partners with Julian Mackay (Principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet) and Lauren Lovette (former Principal dancer with NYC Ballet) amongst others bringing some international heat with the local likes of Mia Heathcote (Senior Soloist with Queensland Ballet) and Victor Estevez (Principal with Queensland Ballet). Attracting art and ballet enthusiasts, this event is actually going to be like no other. Joel wants you to feel like you're at a ballet festival whilst celebrating the artists like rockstars and highlighting the importance of bringing ballet to the people. BIG is on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th June of this year (I'll actually be attending the Friday performance!) and you can purchase tickets from balletinternationalgala.com - I hope to see you there and whilst I have only met Joel the once for this interview, I am so proud of this young mans ability to form an amazing team around him and shoot for the moon. __________________ Get your FREE Balanced Ballerinas 'Intention Setting' worksheet HERE and start kicking GOALS: https://www.balancedballerinas.com/product/balanced-ballerinas-intention-setting-worksheet/ You can find more resources at www.balancedballerinas.com Instagram @thebalancedballerina Podcast @balancedballerinas Facebook - Balanced Ballerinas (ensure you join the *SECRET* Facebook group too!)

Today we're talking with Ben Horseman and Joel Burke, digging deeper into the book of Joshua and exploring why these questions and stories matter in our walk with Jesus.
A few weeks ago, Jeff Taylor threw down the gauntlet... he would go skydiving, IF listeners could raise $30,000 for the ministry of KCBI. You guys raised that amount in just 9 days, so Jeff and Rebecca decided to sweeten the pot: if we could raise $10,000 more for KCBI, Jeff would get to push his boss, Joel Burke, out too. Well, guess what, guys... you raised that in less than 24 hours. Joel's jumping too!Thank you so much for all that you do to support KCBI. As a listener-supported station, we depend on generous gifts from the community to continue our ministry... and allow our on-air staff the opportunity to conquer their greatest fears! Now Jeff shares about his experience and recaps what it was like to jump out of a plane 14,000 feet in the air!
However, that's not all that happened. After thinking about the scary truth that he was indeed going to be jumping out of an airplane flying down towards the ground, Jeff didn't want to go alone. He decided to sign up our boss Joel Burke to jump with him or in his words, he wants to "push his boss out of the plane." There's just one problem. Joel Burke, our boss wasn't exactly notified or asked permission before Jeff did this. ;)
After talking with him off air, Jeff and Joel have come to an agreement. If we can raise an additional $10,000 for the ministry of KCBI, Joel Burke, will jump out of the plane too! "Being pushed out" of the plane may or may not be how he gets out of the plane, it depends on if you ask Joel or Jeff. ;)
Today we’re talking with Associate Pastor, Joel Burke about the Lenten season. This episode will help us understand what Lent is, what it isn’t, where it came from, and why it matters for our walk with Jesus.
Joel Burke, KCBI's Program Director, filled in for Jeff today and shared about what God was speaking to him about this past weekend and the lessons he learned can apply to any one of us as we look to hear God's voice in our daily walk. It may not be this physical voice that you see in the movies, but God certainly communicates to us in a variety of different methods. Sometimes you need to get away from the noise, pull out of all of the distractions, and just get quiet in order to really see how God has impacted you so far.
Whether you're looking for a job or you're trying to transition into another role, it's important that we make sure that our résumé is the most effective to ensure that we have the best shot at getting the job! That's why there are certain things that should never be on résumé. Our boss, Joel Burke joins us to share why this is the case!
This morning, we brought in the bossman, Joel Burke to share his thoughts as Jeff recently found an article stating that if you're over 40, the 40 hour/5 day work week is way too much. Jeff might have a part-time job after this.
On today’s episode, we’re talking with one of favorite associate pastors, Joel Burke about Advent. What is it, anyway? We’ll talk about the various church traditions and biblical principles and why any of this matters to our walk with Jesus.
Today we’re talking with Joel Burke and Dale Tiemann. They'll be teaching together at The Crossing on the weekend of July 14 and 15. In this episode, they’ll share how God wove their stories into the story of The Crossing.
