This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Senior Editors Molly Roberts and Eric Columbus, and Contributing Editor Renée DiResta, to talk through the week's big domestic news stories, including:“Signed, Sealed, Undelivered.” As the first mail ballots of the 2026 midterms go out this week, a fast-moving legal fight over President Trump's effort to reshape mail-in voting is racing toward the Supreme Court. At issue is a new U.S. Postal Service rule—stemming from a Trump executive order—that requires states to submit absentee voters' information to a federal portal before USPS will deliver their mail-in ballots. A federal ruling in Massachusetts blocked key parts of the rule last week, the administration is appealing, and a separate challenge is pending in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, an anonymous whistleblower in the U.S. Postal Service has come forward and warned that the hastily built portal it intends to use to vet mailed ballots is so untested and unforgiving that a single scanning error could stop tens of thousands of ballots from reaching voters. How did we get here? And what is it likely to mean for November's election?“Meta Culpa.” Last week, Meta abruptly settled a landmark child-safety case midway through trial, agreeing to pay a bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general as much as $17 billion and to overhaul how teenagers experience Instagram and Facebook. The proposed consent judgment—which has been approved by a federal judge in California—would require a default two-hour daily time limit for users under 18, a midnight-to-6 a.m. “night mode,” hidden “like” counts, stronger age checks, and a school-hours notification cutback, most of it locked in for a decade. It's being billed as the largest big-tech settlement ever, but some children's advocates are warning that its terms don't touch the recommendation algorithms at the heart of the problem. Is this a turning point for social media regulation—or just a manageable cost of doing business?“Strictly Ballroom.” On Monday, a divided Supreme Court cleared the way for President Trump to keep building his enormous new White House ballroom, staying a lower-court injunction that had halted construction on the site of the now-demolished East Wing. But the 5-4 ruling in National Park Service v. National Trust for Historic Preservation didn't actually decide whether the project is lawful. Instead, the majority held that the challengers—led by an architectural historian who regularly walks her dog past the White House—lacked standing to sue, deeming her objection to the ballroom mere “offense” rather than a concrete aesthetic injury. In an unusual twist, Chief Justice Roberts wrote the principal dissent, joined by the Court's three Democratic appointees, arguing that the Court has left standing doctrine even murkier than it found it. So what did the Court actually decide? And what might it mean for other legal challenges to Trump's refashioning of our nation's capital, and beyond? In object lessons, the summer has left most of our crew hungry for more. Eric is eating up the tropical goodness of certain (glass-free) Outshine fruit bars. Molly is savoring the simplicity of an in-season tomato. Scott is perfecting his process for perfect pizza. Today's Headlines: The Trump family received a conditional bank charter for their crypto firm World Liberty Financial — co-run by Eric Trump and Steve Witkoff's son — allowing them to issue their own stablecoins, which means more money for them and more risk in the financial system. Meanwhile, Disney and ABC are suing the FCC for retaliating against them politically by reviewing their broadcast licenses two years early over Jimmy Kimmel, The View, and DEI — citing Trump's own Truth Social posts. In other news, Meta's jury trial started in California with four states seeking billions in damages and platform reforms, alleging the company deliberately designed addictive features for children, studied how to maximize that addiction, and collected data on under-13s without parental consent while hiding all of it — with 25 more states going to trial later. A DOJ whistleblower filed a complaint alleging the Ivy League antisemitism task force pressured universities into settlements with little to no evidence, calling the investigations "predetermined" political PR stunts designed to suspend federal funding — with career attorneys overruled when they objected. Pete Hegseth flew to Iowa on a taxpayer-funded military aircraft in his "personal capacity" to explore a 2028 presidential run while sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln are still stranded at sea, ships are being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, and at least one sailor was killed near Oman. Trump is also pushing aides to arrange a Kim Jong Un meeting this fall, apparently believing he can convince North Korea to give up a nuclear program they've been building since the 1990s, while simultaneously saying the Strait of Hormuz is under control as two more ships were attacked. In more food recall news, Outshine fruit bars were recalled nationwide due to possible glass contamination, because apparently popsicles are also not safe anymore. And finally, Florida primary results are in: Trump's pick Byron Donalds will face Democrat David Jolly in the governor's race, and abusive congressman Cory Mills lost his seat. Steiny & Guru discuss the concept of shadows between head coaches and star players, because Kyle Shanhan might be the only one in the NFL that casts one larger than a pro-bowl caliber signal caller.
George Lombard Jr. and Jaxson Dart are giving New York fans two young stars to dream on, but who will ultimately leave the bigger legacy? Shaun Morash is in for Evan Roberts alongside Tiki Barber as they debate Lombard's smooth, natural presence with the Yankees and why Dart still needs to become more consistent at quarterback for the Giants. The Giants' secondary also remains a concern, with Colton Hood yet to separate himself enough to demand an immediate starting role. Plus, Shaun goes scorched earth on Rudy, calling the beloved football movie wildly overrated and ripping its acting and dialogue while callers rush to defend the classic.

She spent 20 years earning a seat that was never built for her — and found out the hard way that being good at the job doesn't make you safer. It makes you a bigger threat....Retired Fire Chief Deena Johnson Lee joins Marie to talk about what actually happens once you start winning in a predominantly male industry: the "belonging trust" nobody tells you about, the women who turn against other women, and the moment a boyfriend in the academy told her, "I just don't want you to be better than me at anything."...This one covers the unwritten rules nobody hands you on day one, why competence alone never gets you accepted, and the question that changes everything: would you rather be liked, or respected?...Listen if you're tired of doing everything right — and still getting picked apart for it.

Like the disjointed levels in a video game, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is more akin to a collection of scenes--each one fun, funny, and action-packed...but barely tethered to a greater whole. In other words, the story is thin and the script is non-existent much like how the Mario games tend to be. Does this make the film a missed opportunity? Or rather, as Mario-creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said many a time, is the plumber incompatible with anything resembling an actual plot? Tune in as Mr. Pacario ponders a film that straddles the cinematic super with the narrative sewer. For more delights and insights into everything weird and yesteryear, check out lostnostalgia.comThanks to Decktonic for the cover tune.

On this episode of The Carmudgeon Show, it's a showdown between the NA2 Acura NSX and the Ferrari F355 - both of-the-period rivals in the late ‘90s to early ‘00s, now analog sports car classics in 2026. Although seemingly quite different at first, both cars have much more in common than you might expect. But which one is better? === Visit http://JasonSentMe.com to get a Hagerty Guaranteed Value (TM) collector-car insurance quote! === As both the 355 and NSX have benefitted from a major popularity boost in recent years, both cars have earned their way into enthusiasts' hearts - and wallets - with 90th percentile examples selling well above $150,000. But alas, this wouldn't be The Carmudgeon Show without pulling apart all the flaws with these mid-engined contemporary classics. While both cars do a lot well - particularly in the induction noise department - numb steering, lackluster interior materials, and pricey timing belt services are some of the many points to be picked apart by Jason and Derek. And how do they compare against the 993 Porsche 911, and modern-day sports cars like the Lotus Evora and Emira? Alas, there can only be one winner. And maybe it's not the one you're expecting… Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Crystal-clear water means more than fine micron ratings; it means steady flow, low pressure spikes, and a filter you can actually live with. We dive into the real-world reasons cartridge filters outperform DE and sand for most pools, from massive surface area that keeps PSI stable to a simple cleaning routine that skips the gray dust and regulatory headaches of diatomaceous earth. We walk through how pleated media provides 7x the surface area of common DE setups, why that matters for circulation, and how stable flow prevents dead zones, improves skimming, and reduces algae risk. You'll hear practical comparisons: DE at 3–5 microns, cartridge around 10–20, sand near 40—and why your eye won't notice the difference between 5 and 15 microns, but your spa spillway will notice the flow. We also cover where sand or DE still makes sense, especially in high-dust regions where backwashing is a lifeline, and for homeowners who need the simplest possible maintenance routine. If you run a variable speed pump, this conversation is a must. Cartridges pair naturally with higher throughput, keeping performance consistent at elevated speeds and making the most of modern 3 HP total-rated motors. We break down service realities—DE recharging, grid tears, cracked manifolds, and messy burps—versus the straightforward hose-and-go workflow of cartridges. Then we talk replacement cycles, brand recommendations for elements, and why most new builds default to cartridges because of both performance and local DE disposal rules.• Why cartridge surface area preserves flow and reduces PSI rise• Micron ratings vs what the human eye can see• When high-dirt regions may favor sand or DE• Variable speed pump compatibility and throughput• Cleaning workflows and mess: DE recharging vs quick cartridge rinse• Common failure points in DE and sand that cartridges avoid• Cost and replacement cycles for grids vs cartridges• Sizing guidance using 420–520 sq ft examples• Builder trends and local DE disposal rulesSend us a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors!
