This week Ivy Slater, host of Her Success Story, chats with her guest, Sonia Kostich. The two talk about Sonia's unique merger of arts and finance, her role in fostering artistic talent at Baryshnikov Arts, and the importance of building relationships and support systems in every career phase.  In this episode, we discuss: How Sonia Kostich transitioned from a professional ballet dancer to a career in finance, going to college at 42 and working at Goldman Sachs. What inspired her to reinvent herself and pursue a new path after a successful 20-year career in dance. When Sonia made the decision to take the next step in her life and focus on education and a new career direction. Why Sonia believes keeping strong relationships and a support network is crucial, especially during major life transitions. How the skills and discipline from a dance career can translate into success in the business world. The importance of staying open to possibilities and being willing to step into the unknown as part of personal and professional growth. Sonja Kostich- Executive Director of Baryshnikov Arts brings with her both the knowledge and experience of having been a professional dancer for over two decades as well as significant business acumen derived from her business education and time working at Goldman Sachs. Through a unique and successful professional trajectory, she now merges her artistic and business experience as an arts leader. Ms. Kostich was hired by Mikhail Baryshnikov at the age of 17 to join American Ballet Theatre from The School of Classical Ballet, the training school for ABT created by Mr. Baryshnikov, consisting of only seven female students and five male students. She later danced with the San Francisco Ballet and the Zurich Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, and in multiple collaborations with opera/theater director Peter Sellars, before co-founding OtherShore, which she co-directed for six years. Her experience in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance resulted in a diverse international career that spanned across artistic disciplines.  Upon retiring from dancing, Ms. Kostich returned to school, obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting and Business Communication from Zicklin School of Business, CUNY Baruch College, where she graduated Salutatorian at the age of 42. Following, she began a full-time position at Goldman Sachs in the Finance Division with a focus on regulatory capital requirements. Simultaneously she obtained an MA in Arts Administration, eventually returning to the dance world, first as the finance manager at Mark Morris Dance Group and then as program manager at New York City Center. From 2018 to 2022, she served as the Chief Executive and Artistic Officer at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 153-acre artist sanctuary located in Tivoli, NY, where she led the successful rebrand and revitalization of the over 30-year organization, bringing it to award-winning status for its significant artistic and economic contributions to the Hudson Valley.  In October 2022, Ms. Kostich joined Baryshnikov Arts as its new Executive Director. As a female Korean American, born in Seoul, Korea, and raised in Minnesota, her history, both personal and professional, lends itself to cultivating and supporting new perspectives as Baryshnikov Arts expands its capacity to create multi-platform and collaborative havens for artistic expression, innovation and freedom and especially as we commit further to elevating and sharing the stories of artists of diverse cultures and histories. This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Ballet West is the ninth largest professional ballet company in the country and is the second-largest performing arts organization in Utah with an international reputation for artistic excellence since its founding in 1963. Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joins us with more. Michael Scolamiero: Ballet West is home to America's first Nutcracker, which all started when our founder, Willam Christensen, choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker in the United States in 1944. This year, we are celebrating 80 years of The Nutcracker, which has become officially known as a Living Historic Landmark by the state of Utah, the first such designation of its kind in the country. We are the only company that presents this version in the United States, which Christensen first created for the San Francisco Ballet during the height of WWII to provide family entertainment to audiences during a difficult time in the world. It was ideal because of the vast number of children used in the production, when so many able-bodied dancers were enlisted in the military. Thanks to Christensen, The Nutcracker has become synonymous with the holiday tradition and has become a major revenue stream for ballet companies around the world. Derek Miller: For over 60 years, Ballet West has expanded its footprint in our community through innovative performances and preeminent training in dance. Her experience in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance resulted in a diverse international career that spanned across artistic disciplines.Upon retiring from dancing, Ms. From 2018 to 2022, she served as the Chief Executive and Artistic Officer at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 153-acre artist sanctuary located in Tivoli, NY, where she led the successful rebrand and revitalization of the 30+ year organization, bringing it to award-winning status for its significant artistic and economic contributions to the Hudson Valley. On January 26 of 2024, San Francisco Ballet premiered a commissioned work by Canadian American choreographer Aszure Barton. It was titled “Mere Mortals” and explored the science and ramifications of AI through the ancient myth of Pandora. With a brand-new score by world-renowned British electronica composer Sam Shepherd, aka Floating Points, and video and sound design by Barcelona-based Hamill Industries, “Mere Mortals” was a big gamble for new artistic director Tamara Rojo as she closed out her first season with the Ballet. It paid off. Not only was “Mere Mortals” a hit with critics, with the San Francisco Chronicle calling it “a passionate success,” but it also proved to be a box-office bonanza, so much so that San Francisco Ballet brought the production back to the stage just three months later for several encore performances. Perhaps more importantly, many in the audience were first-time ballet-goers, many of whom saw the piece more than once.In this arts climate when so many dance companies are struggling to get even their regular audiences back in the door, what was it about “Mere Mortals” that made it such a hit? In this interview, Aszure opens a window into her choreographic practice and how it may have contributed to an event equally invigorating to her dancers and her audience.Aszure is the artistic director of Aszure Barton & Artists, which she founded very early in her career as a creative outlet for the collaborative and anti-hierarchical instincts she'd had to repress in her dance education. Two decades later, Aszure Barton & Artists, which includes a core staff of creative collaborators, has created work all over the world with a wide array of artists and institutions, including Mikhai Baryshnikov, Nederlans Dans Theater and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Aszure is currently the choreographer in residence at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and is also developing a new piece in partnership with trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire.

"Once Was Gleaming" The California-born Tanner Porter is a composer, arranger, performer, vocalist and songwriter. Her voice is otherwordly and wonderful, and set against her complex orchestral arrangements, it evokes everyone from Kate Bush to Tori Amos. Her debut album The Summer Sinks was a stone cold stunner and her new album Once Was Gleaming picks up where Summer left off, offering a stirring and moving song-cycle that's filled with breathtaking musical finesse, and almost cinematic compositional scope. Tanner's orchestral music has been commissioned by the Louisville Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra, the New York Youth Symphony, and Nu Deco Ensemble, among others. She's collaborated on ballets that were premiered by the Boston Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet, had short operas commisioned by Barnard College and Columbia University's New Opera Workshop and she's been busy on Broadway in ILLINOISE, with music by Sufjan Stevens as a vocal/guitar understudy for two roles. Tanner has been a composer-in-residence with the Louisville Orchestra's 2023-2024 Creators Corps, a fellow of the Aspen Music Festival, and her works have been presented at Carnegie Hall, the New World Symphony's New World Center, and the Prototype Festival. She was a 2019 recipient of the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Scholarship. Tanner holds degrees in composition from the University of Michigan and the Yale School of Music. Once Was Gleaming is as sweeping as it is dramatic, punctuated by strings and electronica and a voice that soars through it all with inexplicable beauty. Composer Anna Clyne on Finding Endless Inspiration Outside of Music

As busy as composer Anna Clyne is this season — fulfilling commissions for new works and serving as a resident artist with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, and the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla y León — music accounts for a fraction of her artistic inspiration. That's because the Grammy-nominated British composer thrives on incorporating many creative disciplines outside of music into her work. Reviewing a roster of her recent engagements, you'll find critically acclaimed collaborations with visual artist Josh Dorman, filmmaker Jyll Bradley, and choreographers from London's Royal Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet. Clyne's immersive approach to music-making offers audiences new entry points for experiencing new music and understanding classical music's relationship to other branches of the arts. "Success for me is about reaching audiences," she says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "My role as a composer is to create something as beautiful as I can and to share that. When people come back with a piece that's been very moving for them, I feel I've been successful in sharing something with the world. That's a very humbling feeling." In this conversation, we discuss her ongoing partnership with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, how a Mark Rothko painting inspired her orchestral work Color Field, and the ways a lifelong love of literature is helping her to write an opera on the life of Emily Dickinson. Plus, Clyne discusses her wellness practices — from drawing and Japanese calligraphy to long walks with her adopted pup Penny — the joy of ending a long day with a Negroni, and her favorite place for classic steak frites in New York City. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. Chad Goodman is, to quote Christina Wallace from Forbes Magazine, "an entrepreneur bringing innovation to classical music." In his young life, Chad has started his own ensemble, the Elevate Ensemble, worked with the San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Ballet as a conductor, and is currently a Conducting Fellow of the New World Symphony. So how did he do all of this at such a young age? He gives a lot of clues and practical advice in his book: "You Earned a Music Degree. Now What?" It was a pleasure to speak with him about the many aspects of his career and life.We begin by going back to the start of Chad's career, learning music and also learning the business of music. At a very young age, he founded the Elevate Ensemble. He talks about many of the different aspects of planning concerts, paying musicians, arranging concert venues, and the like. We trace his career to working with the San Francisco Symphony, assisting guest conductors, and how Manfred Honeck was such a profound influence on him.

As an Aquarius (Sun), Sagittarius (Moon), Gemini (Rising) and Human Design Projector, she found her calling navigating visionary spiritual entrepreneurs and social impact makers, to their star-charted success in their spiritual journey through their work. Leslie: “The powerful smile and purpose you see now is relatively new. If you had met me as a brand designer 5 years ago, you would have met a woman that dimmed her light and felt lost in comparison and crippling self doubt. I have always loved astrology and I knew that we are multifaceted, more dynamic than just our Sun sign. All that I had learned about branding, our positioning, our why, our values, I could now see in my own natal chart. It was this a-ha moment, when I recognized what had always been right in front of my nose - an innovative way to specify a brand's position, voice and style using Astrology - without guessing, copying or comparing! At that instance of recognition, I decided to bring my deep spirituality and love of astrology out of the closet and fashion it into a strategic, practical tool to create soul-aligned brand identities, leadership and visibility. After all, our businesses and work are part of our soul's spiritual journey!  When not stargazing and advising, I'm a professional classical clarinetist with my nationally-recognized chamber ensemble Quinteto Latino and playing in groups like the San Francisco Ballet and the San Francisco Opera. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich went to court in Moscow this week, to request his pre-trial detention be under house arrest, rather than jail. No surprise, he was denied. He's the latest American to be picked up and thrown behind bars by a foreign government – a trend on the rise, according to the James Foley Foundation, and it's breaking families apart. Three Americans detained in Iran are desperate to be freed, so much so, one of them – Siamak Namazi, made the bold decision to call this program from Evin Prison, and plead with President Biden to help free them all. But weeks pass, and there they remain, hostage to the political winds. Siamak's brother Babak has been working tirelessly for years to free him, and so has Tara Tahbaz on behalf of her father, Morad Tahbaz who is also detained there. The two of them spoke to Christiane alongside Jason Rezaian, who was imprisoned in Iran himself, before being released in a 2016 prisoner swap.  Also on today's show: Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director, San Francisco Ballet; Laura Trevelyan, former BBC journalist To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

That's the number one thing I always tell leaders. You are absolutely entitled to your emotions, and you should display emotions because it is who you are and it is authentic to the experience that you're having. We also have to be aware because as leaders, we are extremely visible. Our voices carry more weight than other people who are sitting in different parts of the organization. And so I'm not saying that we need to mask our emotions, but we have to be aware of the impact that our own emotions have. So depending on where the leaders themselves are in that change curve, they have to be aware that this could actually pull people towards that. So if somebody is angry about a change that is occurring, it will most definitely leak onto their teams.” - Nenuca SyquiaConnect with Amy: https://msha.ke/createmagicatwork
